I’ll be the first to admit it: if I’m planning a trip, there is a 90% chance I’m trying to figure out how to get back to Italy. And Rome is the quintessential Italy experience that every family needs to have at least one (and maybe more than once!) It is the kind of city that just feeds your soul: the history, beautiful, and food are all ideal for core memory making.

Taking the kids to an ancient, big, bustling city can feel like a massive undertaking, but that is exactly what this guide is designed for! From dodging the tourist traps to finding the best spots for kids among the ruins, I’ve done the heavy lifting for you. I’m sharing all my best tips and favorite stops so you can skip the stress and get straight to the magic. Andiamo!

Before You Go: A Few Things to Know About Rome

Book Everything in Advance

I cannot stress this enough: The Colosseum, the Vatican, and most major sites run on timed entry tickets. Lines without a reservation can stretch for hours, and that is not a situation you want to be in with a kid in the summer heat. If you are planning to visit Rome with kids, book any must-do popular tourist attractions ideally 60 days ahead of your visit.

The Cobblestones Are Real

Rome’s historic center is almost entirely paved with uneven cobblestones, and they will test your feet and stroller situation fast. Ladies, I know the Italians are super fashionable, but this isn’t the place to wear your best heels. Everyone in your party needs a flat walking shoe to avoid turning an ankle.

As for wheels for the kids, we use the Graco Modes Aventura for all of our Europe trips, and it is a lifesaver: wide enough wheels to handle the cobblestones without a fight, and both kids could ride when little legs gave out. Plus, it’s not wide, so you can get down even the tightest sidewalks. A carrier is also worth packing for the spots where strollers simply can’t go, like St. Peter’s Basilica or any underground tour.

Best Time to Visit Rome with Kids

Autumn (September through October): My absolute top choice for families; I just love Italy in the fall! Temperatures drop to a very pleasant range, the summer crowds thin out, and the city has a beautiful golden quality in the light. September especially feels like Rome at its most livable.

Winter (November through February): The least busy time of year, which has real appeal if your kids are in school and you’re traveling over holiday breaks. Christmas in Rome is magical, with markets and lights throughout the historic center. January and February are cold and quiet, which some families love.

Spring (March through May): The weather is mild, flowers are everywhere, and the crowds are manageable compared to summer. Long days out are comfortable, and your kids won’t be melting on the walk between gelato stops.

Summer (June through August): Doable, but genuinely brutal heat-wise, especially July and August. If this is your only window, plan for very early mornings, a long midday break at your hotel, and lighter afternoon outings. Hydration and shade become your whole strategy.

Important Note about August & December: These are prime holiday months for the entire country of Italy, and many shops, restaurants, and attractions will close completely during these months. If you must travel then, check that what you want to do is available before booking.

Where to Stay

Your neighborhood choice will shape your whole trip. Staying close to the historic center means you can walk back to your hotel for nap time without losing half the day to a taxi.

The Pantheon and Piazza Navona area is a great base: central, charming, and with enough cafés nearby that you will never be far from a snack.

The Trastevere neighborhood is another solid pick for families, with a relaxed village-like feel, beautiful streets, and good restaurants with outdoor seating.

If you want to be close to the Vatican, the Prati neighborhood is quieter and very walkable.

One our last trip, we stayed at The Tribune using Hyatt points. We were thrilled with our stay there and highly recommend it.

The Best Things to Do in Rome with Kids

The Colosseum and Roman Forum

This is the big one, and young kids will definitely be amazed. My kids had no real frame of reference for ancient Rome before we arrived, but standing inside the Colosseum gave them something to grab onto. Gladiators. Giant arenas. Stories. It clicked in a way that a museum probably would not have.

Practical Tips for Visiting the Colosseum with Kids

Book skip-the-line tickets in advance or go one better and book a family-friendly guided tour that includes skip-the-line access. Tours designed for kids often use a scavenger hunt format, which is genuinely the difference between a 20-minute attention span and a kid who is engaged for the full visit. The Colosseum has elevators for families with strollers, so you can get to the upper level without navigating stairs. The underground and arena floor access require a carrier rather than a stroller, so keep that in mind when choosing your ticket type.

The Roman Forum is right next door and included in most Colosseum tickets. My honest advice: if your kids are on the younger end of the 3 to 6 range, do the Colosseum and save the Forum for when they are a little older. It is a large, largely open-air site with a lot of “look at these ruins” energy, which is harder to make exciting for a little kid.

PRO TIP: I always book a professional photo session on our family trips, and Rome was no exception. We had ours at the Colosseum and the photos are honestly some of my favorite we have ever taken as a family. It’s non-negotiable for me whenever we travel. This is the photo shoot that we did. Highly recommend adding it to your Rome with kids plans.

The Trevi Fountain

No list of things to do in Rome with kids is complete without this one, and for good reason. The Trevi Fountain is genuinely spectacular, and the coin-throwing tradition is an instant win with little kids. Give each child their own coin, explain the tradition (one coin means you’ll return to Rome, two means you’ll fall in love, three means you’ll get married), and let them do their own wish.

What to Know About the New Ticketing System

Rome introduced a paid entry system at the Trevi Fountain starting February 2026. Non-residents now need to buy a 2-euro ticket to approach the fountain and toss their coins. That’s just over two dollars per person, so for a family it’s a small but real line item to factor in.

Tickets can be purchased online on the official website, at the Civic Museums, at Tourist Infopoints, at affiliated sales points, or at the entrance by card only. The ticketed hours run every day from 9am to 10pm. Children under five get in free, and there are no time limits once you’re down at the basin level, which is great news with kids because you’re not being rushed through the moment.

The good news is that the crowd management system has made the basin area noticeably less chaotic, which honestly makes the experience better for families. The coin-throwing moment lands differently when you’re not elbow-to-elbow with 400 strangers. Keep in mind that you can still view the fountain from the street level (as pictured above) without paying the fee, but you’ll be too far to throw a coin if that’s important for you.

When to Go

Early morning is still the most pleasant time to visit. The fountain is lit beautifully, the crowds are thin, and you can linger without the ticketed rush starting. If early mornings don’t work with your kids’ schedule, late evening after 10pm is lovely and free. Midday in peak season is the one window I’d avoid. If you’re coming from the U.S. take advantage of the time change the first few days and hit it during a window your kids are still on their home time zone.

Villa Borghese Gardens

This park is one of the best things to do in Rome with kids, full stop. Think of it as Rome’s Central Park, but arguably more charming. There is a playground, a small zoo called the Bioparco, pedal boats you can rent on the lake, electric bike rentals with kids’ seats, and a little train that loops through the park when small legs are done walking.

How to Spend a Day at Villa Borghese

A good approach is to start the morning with a bike rental and ride through the park before it gets busy. Most rental spots require an ID, so keep that handy. After a couple of hours of exploring, the park cafés are a solid option for a relaxed lunch before letting the kids loose at the playground.

For families who love animals, the Bioparco is worth building into the day. It’s compact enough to do in a couple of hours and has a good mix of animals without being overwhelming. The pedal boats on the lake are another hit with young kids, and the little train that loops through the park is a great option when small legs are done walking.

Piazza Navona

Piazza Navona might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Rome with kids, but it earns a spot on the list every time. It is one of the most beautiful squares in Italy, with Bernini’s famous Fountain of the Four Rivers right at the center, but for young kids, it’s basically a giant outdoor living room.

There’s space to run, street performers to watch, gelato carts, and if you time it right, bubble vendors near the fountain.

The square is pedestrian-only and the energy at dusk is wonderful. It’s also an easy walk from most hotels in the historic center, so it became our natural endpoint for the day.

Golf Cart Tour of Rome

One of the most unexpectedly fun things we did in Rome was a golf cart tour, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions of the whole trip for families with young kids. Instead of navigating taxis (and the car seat question that comes with them) or walking long stretches between sights, you load everyone into a covered golf cart with a local guide and cover a huge amount of the city in a relaxed, low-effort way.

We passed through neighborhoods and past landmarks we might have skipped on foot, and the kids loved riding around town. No car seats required, no stroller logistics, just a comfortable way to see the city together.

Tours typically run a couple of hours and cover the main highlights of the historic center. Look for family-friendly options that let you customize the route or make stops along the way.

The Pantheon

Nearly 2,000 years old and still standing with its original dome intact. The Pantheon is arguably the best-preserved ancient building in Rome, and walking through those bronze doors puts the scale of Roman engineering right in front of you.

The oculus is a 9-meter wide opening at the top of the dome that lets in natural light and, when it rains, water falls straight through onto the marble floor below. To handle it, Roman engineers designed the floor with a slight convex curve sloping down from the center, with 22 hidden drainage holes built in to move the water out efficiently. A 2,000-year-old drainage system that still works today. That’s the kind of detail that makes the Pantheon worth explaining to your kids before you walk in.

What to Know Before You Visit

Tickets are required and must be booked in advance. There’s no stroller access inside, so plan to fold yours or wear your youngest in a carrier. The visit itself is relatively short, maybe 30 to 45 minutes, which is perfect for the attention span of young kids. Pair it with a gelato stop just outside and you have a happy post-visit situation.

Castel Sant’Angelo

Castel Sant’Angelo looks like a castle, functions like a fortress, and has enough spiral ramps, towers, and old cannons that kids treat it like a giant adventure playground. There’s a small playground within the castle grounds, too, which is handy if you need a break mid-visit. The views from the top over the Tiber and back toward St. Peter’s are genuinely beautiful.

Visiting with a Stroller

The ramps inside are manageable for most strollers, though some sections are steep. I’d recommend leaving the stroller at the entrance and wearing your child if they’re not walking confidently yet, or keeping close hold on little ones who might sprint toward the ramparts.

Monument to Victor Emmanuel II

Romans call it the Vittoriano, and visitors have a few less flattering nicknames for it, the Wedding Cake and the Typewriter being the most common, which gives you a sense of how divisive this building is among locals. But for families visiting Rome with kids, it earns its spot on the list for a simple reason: the rooftop view is one of the best in the entire city, and getting up there is genuinely fun for kids.

A panoramic glass elevator takes you to the top terrace, where you get sweeping views over the Imperial Fora, the Pantheon, St. Peter’s Basilica, and Via del Corso. It’s the kind of panorama that helps young kids start to piece together the geography of everything they’ve been seeing at street level.

The monument itself is enormous: 135 meters wide and 70 meters tall, built from white marble with Corinthian columns, grand stairways, and bronze statues crowning the top. It was built to honor Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of a unified Italy, and since 1921 it has also housed the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, guarded day and night by two sentinels. The changing of the guard happens every hour and is worth timing your visit around.

Practical Tips

Entry to walk around and climb the stairs is free.

The panoramic elevator to the top terrace has a small fee.

If you’re just heading up for the view, about 30 minutes is plenty.

The monument sits right at Piazza Venezia, which makes it an easy add-on if you’re already heading toward the Roman Forum or the Pantheon.

Explora Children’s Museum

When you need a break from sightseeing, Explora is the answer. Located on Via Flaminia 82, within walking distance of Piazza del Popolo, it’s Rome’s children’s museum built entirely around the idea that play is a tool for learning and discovery. The exhibits cover science, nature, technology, and hands-on sensory experiences, and the whole place is designed to feel more like an adventure than a classroom.

Visits run on a timed schedule across four daily sessions: 10:00 to 11:45, 12:00 to 13:45, 15:00 to 16:45, and 17:00 to 18:45. Each session lasts 1 hour and 45 minutes. Tickets need to be booked in advance, as spots fill up, especially during school holidays. The museum is closed on Mondays. Worth packing your own snacks just in case. If you hit a hot afternoon or a rainy day, this is where to go.

A Pizza or Pasta Making Class

This is the kind of thing to do in Rome with kids that they will talk about when they get home. Hands-on cooking classes designed for families are widely available and they are genuinely fun, not just for the kids but for everyone. Most run for a couple of hours and end with eating what you made, which is the best part.

Trastevere Neighborhood Wander

Trastevere sits just across the Tiber from the historic center and feels like a completely different city. Cobblestone alleys, ivy-covered facades, laundry strung between windows, and a pace that has nothing to do with tourist itineraries. It is the kind of neighborhood that rewards slow walking and no particular plan, and it also happens to be one of the best places in Rome to sit down for a real meal.

What Makes It Good for Kids

Piazza San Cosimato has a playground that is perfect for burning off late-afternoon energy before dinner. The outdoor trattorias here are relaxed and unhurried. For gelato, look for shops labeled “gelato artigianale,” which signals it is made in-house with real ingredients rather than the puffed-up brightly colored versions near the major tourist sites. Google Maps ratings are your friend here.

Vatican City and St. Peter’s Basilica

Vatican City is technically its own country, which is one of those facts that lands surprisingly well with curious kids. There are no passport controls and no real border crossing to worry about, so for practical purposes you simply walk in from Rome. The area breaks down into a few distinct parts, and how much you tackle depends entirely on the age and energy of your kids.

St. Peter’s Square

St. Peter’s Square is a massive pedestrian-only space with plenty of room to move around, impressive columns on all sides, and vendors nearby if you need snacks to keep things moving. This is genuinely the easiest part of the Vatican to enjoy. No tickets, no queues, no time pressure. Just an enormous beautiful square with one of the most iconic facades in the world in front of you.

St. Peter’s Basilica

Entrance to the Basilica is free, though no tickets are required to get in. Some skip-the-line tickets are available and worth considering, since everyone still passes through security regardless. Arrive early, ideally before 9am, to keep the queuing to a minimum. The Basilica is enormous and the decoration is elaborate enough to hold a young child’s attention in a way that most museums do not.

A few practical things to know before you go: strollers are not allowed inside, so plan to check yours at the cloakroom or use a carrier. Food and drinks are also not permitted inside, so feed and water everyone beforehand. The dress code is strict and applies to kids, too: shoulders and knees covered for everyone, no exceptions. Pack a light scarf or layer in your bag to avoid being turned away at the entrance after waiting in line.

The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel

This is where you need to be honest with yourself about your kids. The museums involve slow-moving crowds, a lot of walking, and a sheer volume of art and artifacts that is genuinely overwhelming for young children. If visiting the museums is important to you, the best approach is to book a family-friendly guided tour with skip-the-line access. Some tours include interactive kids booklets with activities and quizzes that keep younger visitors engaged through the galleries, the Raphael Rooms, and Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling. Without a guide, it is a long and disorienting experience even for adults.

Tips for Getting Around Rome with Kids

Rome is mostly a walking city, especially in the historic center. Taxis and ride-shares are easier than buses when you have a stroller because buses require you to fold everything up in a crowd. The metro has limited coverage in the historic areas (ancient underground infrastructure gets in the way), so don’t count on it as your primary way around. However, it can be useful in some areas, but you will be carrying your stroller up and down the stairs to enter and exit, if you bring one.

Keep your days flexible enough to walk back to your home base for downtime. One big activity in the morning, a slow lunch, a rest, and then something lower-key in the afternoon is a schedule that works really well. Rome is not a city you need to race through, and the pressure to see everything in one trip is the fastest way to make everyone miserable. Italians are all about slowing down and enjoying life, so embrace that part of the culture.

A few coins for bathroom entry are worth keeping in your bag. Many public restrooms in tourist areas charge a small fee, and scrambling for change with an urgent kid is its own kind of adventure.

Things to Do in Rome with Kids: Packing Tips

Beyond your usual travel gear, a few things can make your trip noticeably easier. A sturdy-wheeled stroller over an ultra-light umbrella stroller for the cobblestones. A carrier for the stroller-restricted sites. A small day bag with snacks, water, and a change of clothes for the inevitably messy gelato moments.

Final Thoughts

Rome rewards the families who slow down, and that is really the secret to making Rome with kids so memorable. The city has a way of delivering its best moments between the sights: a piazza stumbled upon at dusk, a gelato eaten on the steps of a fountain, a side street that leads nowhere in particular but looks like a painting. Build in the downtime, keep the days flexible, and let the city do some of the work. That is the trip worth planning.

If you’re working on your Italy itinerary and want ideas beyond Rome, I also have a full post on things to do in Positano with kids that’s worth reading before you book. And if you’re thinking about using points to cover the flights or hotels, check out my guide on the Capital One Venture Rewards card, which is what I use to make trips like this actually work on a real budget.

Positano might just be the most postcard-perfect town in Italy, but is it doable with kids? I visited a few years ago (pre-kids!) and have dreamed of going back ever since. Now, with a family in tow, I’m planning a return trip and researching everything to make Positano doable, fun, and family-friendly.

If you’re wondering how to make the most of this iconic destination with your family, here’s everything you need to know. From easy beach days and gelato breaks to boat rides and nearby towns, these are the top things to do in Positano with kids, parent-friendly tips, and a little firsthand perspective.

Where is Positano? How to do you there?

Positano is a small cliffside village on the Amalfi Coast in southern Italy. It sits about 37 miles south of Naples, along one of the most scenic and winding coastlines in the world.

View from Via Positanesi D’America

Flying into Naples, the Best Airport for Positano

If you’re traveling internationally, the most convenient way to reach Positano is by flying into Naples International Airport (NAP). It’s the closest major airport to the Amalfi Coast, and flights from other parts of Europe (or connecting through Rome) are usually easy to find.

Why Naples is a good choice for families:

Shorter transfer time to Positano (about 1.5 hours)

Fewer airport crowds compared to Rome

Direct arrivals from many European hubs

How to Get from Naples to Positano

Once you land in Naples, there are a few ways to reach Positano. Some are scenic, some are budget-friendly, and some are better for traveling with kids.

Private Car Transfer (Most Convenient with Kids)

This is the easiest and most stress-free option for families, especially after a long flight. A private driver can meet you at the airport (often with a car seat if requested), help with bags, and take you directly to your hotel in Positano.

It’s a bit more expensive, but not having to haul kids through train stations or ferry terminals might be worth it. Keep in mind that this can be a challenging option if someone in your family has motion sickness, as the roads are very winding leading into Positano and all of the Amalfi Coast.

Estimated time: 1.5 hours

Train + Ferry or Bus (More Adventurous)

For a more budget-friendly route, you can take the Circumvesuviana train from Naples to Sorrento, then either:

Hop on a ferry to Positano (about 40 minutes). This is what I chose for my trip, and it was lovely to approach Positano from the water.

Take a SITA bus along the Amalfi Coast (about 1.5 hours, very winding, like the car!)

Keep in mind that these transfers can be a challenge with kids, who can’t carry their own luggage, or if you’re carrying around car seats and a stroller in addition to luggage.

Where to Stay in Positano with Kids

When I visited Positano a few years ago, I had the chance to stop by Le Sirenuse, and yes, it’s every bit as dreamy and elegant as you’d imagine. The view from their terrace is iconic, and the interiors are flawless. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to slow down, sip something sparkly, and soak in the romance of the Positano coast.

View from Le Sirenuse

This property can be wonderful for families with older kids. However, it’s not an option for anyone with young children. The hotel does not permit guests under the age of six years old due to its design with numerous stairs and high balconies, which can pose a safety risk for younger children. However, the hotel does welcome children ages six and over. Even if you decide to stay elsewhere, it’s a lovely place to pop in to check out the decor.

Positano is famously vertical; that’s part of its charm. But it can present a challenge when traveling with kids. That’s why it’s important to choose a hotel close to the sea level, so you’re not climbing dozens of stairs every time you go out for gelato.

One of the top family-friendly picks is Hotel Pupetto, located right on Spiaggia Fornillo. It offers direct beach access, spacious family rooms, and an onsite restaurant, making it incredibly convenient for families who want easy, relaxed days by the water.

Another standout is Hotel Palazzo Murat, right in the heart of town. This hotel is known for its central location and beautiful garden courtyard, and within five minutes, you could have your toes in the Mediterranean sea. It’s a great choice if you want walkability without sacrificing charm. The garden here is also open to the public and a great place to relax and explore as a family, even if you’re staying elsewhere. Check the website for current hours, events, or any specific access restrictions before your visit.

For families on a tighter budget, Hotel La Bougainville offers a more affordable stay without sacrificing location. It sits in mid-level Positano, which means fewer steps than some hillside properties, and it’s close to plenty of shops and dining options.

If you’re traveling with a baby or toddler, avoid anywhere high up in the hills unless you’re ready for daily stair workouts.

Best Things to Do in Positano with Kids

Play on the Beach

Positano has two main beaches: Spiaggia Grande and Spiaggia di Fornillo. Both are pebble beaches, which might take some getting used to for kids used to soft sand, but they’re perfect for skipping stones, collecting sea glass, and splashing in shallow water. Make sure to bring some water shoes to keep little toes comfortable.

Spiaggia di Fornillo

Spiaggia di Fornillo is quieter and a short walk away. Also the chair rentals here are about half the price of those at Spiaggia Grande.

Take a Short Boat Ride

Many companies offer one- or two-hour boat tours that stay close to the coast perfect for families. Even a quick loop past nearby coves or sunset cruise can be thrilling for kids. You’ll get stunning views of the Positano coast from the water without committing to a full-day tour.

Hop on the Ferry to Amalfi

The ferry from Positano to Amalfi takes about 30 minutes and drops you into a slightly flatter, more walkable town. Amalfi has a huge piazza, a cathedral with wide steps, and plenty of open space for kids to move around. Fun fact: Amalfi was my favorite Amalfi Coast town, and I think one of the most underrated.

Bonus: There’s a playground right near the harbor.

Explore the Shops

Positano is known for its boutique shopping, but you don’t need to “shop” to enjoy the shops. Many ceramics stores let you peek inside and watch artists paint, and some sell Positano-themed toys or beach gear. A few shops also carry lemon soaps, bags of lemon candies, and inexpensive souvenirs like magnets that feel special to kids.

Church of Santa Maria Assunta

Located just steps from the beach, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta is one of Positano’s most iconic landmarks. Its tiled dome is visible from nearly every angle in town, and the inside is just as beautiful. With centuries-old art and a peaceful, cool interior that’s a nice break from the sun. Even if your kids aren’t into architecture, it’s a quick and easy stop that adds a little history and culture to your Positano day.

Chill on the Terrace

Not everything needs to be go-go-go. One of the top things to do in Positano with kids is simply unwind.
Tips from a Parent for Visiting Positano with Kids

Here are some key things I’m keeping in mind when planning a trip to Positano.

Skip the stroller. It sounds dramatic, but Positano and strollers truly don’t mix. The town is built on steep hills and narrow stone staircases, not flat sidewalks. Instead, plan to use a good carrier for younger kids and pace the day, with plenty of breaks built in.

Water shoes are a game-changer. The beaches look dreamy, but they’re all pebbles (no sand). Beautiful, yes, but not gentle on little feet. Pack water shoes or secure sandals with straps, especially for the kids. Flip-flops don’t stay on in the water, and those rocks get hot.

Prepare for high prices. Positano is stunning, but it’s not cheap. Whether it’s gelato, taxis, or dinner with a view, prices are definitely on the higher end. Budgeting accordingly can make your stay more enjoyable.

Choose your hotel location wisely. This one might be the most important decision of all. A hotel near the beach or central area saves you from constantly climbing stairs just to grab coffee or change clothes. With kids, that kind of convenience is essential.

Bring layers and sun protection. Even outside of summer, the sun is strong. Pack hats, sunscreen, and breezy layers that can work from beach to dinner.

Plan downtime into your days. As tempting as it is to explore every corner, part of Positano’s charm is simply being there. Enjoy slow mornings, beach breaks, and terrace time to soak in the magic.

Be flexible with your itinerary. Between naps, heat, and unpredictable kid moods, it’s better to keep your plans loose. If you spend two hours eating gelato and tossing rocks into the sea instead of visiting Amalfi, that’s just as good.

Planning a longer stay? Here are some easy day trips that we loved.

Pompeii

Older kids will be fascinated by the ruins of Pompeii. It’s about 1.5–2 hours away by car, so plan for a guided day trip from Positano.

Ravello

Quieter and more garden-filled than Positano, Ravello is known for its views and cultural festivals. It’s stroller-unfriendly but great for school-aged kids who love music and gardens. Just like Positano, plan for lots of walking.

Capri

A day trip from Positano to Capri lets your kids experience the island’s magical mix of crystal-clear waters, colorful gardens, and thrilling boat rides they’ll never forget. With its car-free streets, funicular ride, and delicious gelato at every turn, Capri is the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation for families.
I said it before, and I’ll say it again: every time I plan a vacation, I always wonder why I’m not going back to Italy. Italy was my first big international trip, and my family is half Italian. Thus, Italy always feels like the most amazing place in the world. When I set out to plan my Tuscany, Italy road trip, I had to keep my eye on the prize. Road trips require so much planning and coordination, because no one wants to drive the wrong way down a one way, run out of gas, or get an international ticket. Lucky you—I planned it for you! Buon viaggio, amore! 😘

There are literally endless quaint and charming villages throughout the region. Each has its own sights, restaurants, and claims to fame. When I started planning, there were a few towns I knew I wanted to see. All of the other additions to the map came by happy accident during my pre-trip research. The good thing about having a car is that you can go wherever you want, even to those remote, lovely, off-the-beaten path gems that other tourists can’t see.

Don’t Miss:

I absolutely fell in love with Siena and Montepulciano, both of which I chose to stay in. It was a perfect contrast to have them both as home bases for the road trip as well. Montepulciano is the quintessential small town that you can easily walk from end to end in a day. In contrast, Siena is a little larger with more traditional sights, culture, and nightlife.

Having departed from Florence, Montepulciano is the ideal first stop. It’s under 2 hours drive if you take the direct route, or you can easily make a day of getting there by stopping off in Arezzo or Lucigano. Once you’ve arrived, Montepulciano is ideal for ambling through the cobbled streets, stretching your legs, and popping into shops and restaurants along the way. Then, when you stay Siena, you’ll enjoy a more bustling town with tons of activities, art, and restaurants.

Rounding out the villages were Montalcino, a close neighbor of Montepulciano. Montalcino is equally adorable but much smaller than Montepulciano, with a fantastic winery right outside of town (see below). The last village was San Gimignano, known for its medieval skyline dotted with towers built by the town’s wealthy families. The higher your tower the more money and power you had. San Gimignano is also known for their patron Saint Fina, a little girl who had a very hard life. Her tragic story left me pretty distraught the rest of the day after learning about her!

Logistics:

The best way to do this road trip is to create a few home bases in the individual villages, so you aren’t switching hotels every night. As mentioned, I stayed in Montepulciano (in an outstanding Airbnb right in town) and Siena (hotel on the map!). Both are only about an hour and a half away from each other. Part of the allure of this road trip is being able to take your time to stop and discover things along the way (see “The Open Road through Tuscany” below). From Montepulciano, I did day trips to the Pienza and Montalcino area. Then from Siena, I did day trips to San Gimignano and the Chianti region. Plan to drive no more than two hours each day.

All of the cities have some kind of free public parking available, mostly outside of the town walls. You can easily find the parking areas by looking on the town’s websites. Siena is the only place where you need to be careful, because everyone I know who has parked in Siena has gotten a parking ticket, even if they follow the posted regulations. This includes me!

Tuscany is synonymous with wine. Therefore, no tour of the area is complete without a visit to some of the best wineries Tuscany has to offer. I visited so many beautiful vineyards, but the ones that stuck out all had something special to offer in addition to their wines.

Don’t Miss:

My favorite was Badia a Coltibuono, which basically has it all. The winery is built out of an ancient monastery, complete with beautifully manicured gardens, where you can eat wine grapes right off the vine! Don’t miss one of the guided tours, during which you can also taste their house-made olive oils. The next amazing find was Poggio Antico near Montalcino, which is a huge facility, complete with an on-site restaurant and tasting room. They do a lot of red blends, which are totally unique in Tuscany. Finally, you absolutely can’t miss going to a classic vineyard in the Chianti region. Fattoria Vittorio is intimate and family-run, so it’s perfect for learning about the region’s wines. I was lucky enough to get a private tour in English!

Logistics:

Almost all wineries in Italy have two daily tours in English, one in the morning around 11AM and one in the afternoon around 3PM. You must make a reservation in advance. There are generally only a few spots per tour, and there may not be a staff member available to give the tour in English if they don’t know you’re coming. Additionally, it’s essential that you’re on time. The tour will leave without you, and as mentioned, there isn’t staff milling around to help you join as a late-comer. In fact, plan to arrive about 10 minutes early!

The restaurant at Poggio Antico

Ready for a cheese, bread, and wine picnic at Caseificio Cugusi

The fabulous thing about having your own car is that you’ll be able to make so many fun discoveries along the way. One of my favorite experiences was Caseificio Cugusi, a dairy farm/cheese factory. You choose what you want from their shop and have a picnic overlooking Montepulciano—so dreamy. The other absolutely enchanting discovery was Fosso Bianco at Bagni di San Filippo, a stream in the woods at the confluence of several hot springs. The springs form a series of pools, where where you can swim all year long alongside limestone formations that look almost glacial.

To make the drive easier, reserve a car online well in advance, so you can choose if you want a manual or automatic. Most rental car agencies only have one automatic car available each day, but they’ll have one waiting for you if you rent ahead. Additionally, make sure to get a data plan on your smart phone since the GPS device rentals are not very reliable. You can get international data on your phone by calling your mobile provider. On Verizon, coverage in Italy was only $2 a day! Bellisimo!

I dare you to find someone who has traveled to Capri and comes back home saying it was any less than perfection. (Side note: if you do find that person, maybe you don’t listen to their travel advice because they are loco). There’s adventure, glamour, mountains, ocean, signature dishes named for this mighty little island (insalata caprese, anyone?). It’s a veritable melting-pot paradise where even the most discerning of travelers will fall in love. You’ll find yourself happily humming the tune to Volare the entire time you’re there. Let’s get your love affair with Capri underway.

Favorite Moments

Nel Blu, Dipinto Di Blu (In the Blue, Painted Blue)

Faraglioni di Capri

In Capri, it’s all about the blue of the sky and water. In some places, you can barely tell where one meets the other, their perfect shades embracing and becoming one on the horizon. As an island, the only way to arrive to Capri is by ferry, usually from Naples or the Amalfi coast. Instead of taking the funicular right up to the main town square, stay down at the port. Here, you can explore the island by sea.

Don’t Miss:

I had the most fun renting a boat and riding around the island. Head down to Banana Sport‘s outpost, located behind the funicular ticket office (it’s a little hard to find, so see the above map), and you’re on your way. There is so much to see on your ride. The famed Grotta Azzura (Blue Grotto – often closed due to water conditions). The many other colored Grottos (there’s a green and a white grotto, and possibly more). Marina Piccola, the other main (and smaller as the name denotes) marina on the opposite side of the island. The Faraglioni di Capri, huge rock formations in the water, which you can drive through you’re feeling adventurous.

Logistics:

You may be wondering how I rented a boat without a boating license. Well, my friends, this is Italy, and they are not concerned with lawsuits in the same way we are in America. All you need to rent a boat is a valid driver’s license, and it doesn’t have to be an EU license. I was able to use mine from home. The boat is easy to drive as long as you’re reasonably cautious. But do listen to the short tutorial, as you’ll be on your own once you leave the port. Make sure to also ask the person who rents you the boat if the Grotta Azzurra is open or closed. You can’t take the speedboat inside, but the status of the Grotto will give you a clue about the present sea conditions. Closed means it’s high tide and/or rougher sea. Open means low tide/calm waters.

Additionally, I highly recommend going first thing in the morning. Go when both you and other boaters haven’t started on the midday cocktails yet! The seas and the sailors are generally calmer then. Capri grew out of the ocean from a tectonic plate, meaning the coastline is all rocky cliffs. Despite that, if you use a reasonable level of precaution, you’ll be fine!

If the idea of renting a boat freaks you out, don’t skip the sea tour altogether. There are plenty of companies who will take you on a guided tour with a licensed captain.

Anacapri, the more elevated town on the island, is home to Monte Solaro. The highest point in Capri, it boasts sweeping views over the landscape all the way to the mainland.

Don’t Miss:

Monte Solaro quite literally feels like the closest you can get to heaven. As such, it’s worth walking around every inch of the peak to see the island and sea from different angles. Plus, you’ll get a bird’s eye view of all of the sights you just saw on your boat ride!

Logistics:

Getting up there is a bit complicated. Assuming you’re staying in/around Capri’s main town (also called Capri) or Marina Grande, you’ll need to take the funicular to the Piazzetta (Piazza Umberto I). Tickets can only be bought in a few places. The easiest is the main lift, bus, and ferry ticket office, which is right where your ferry disembarks in Marina Grande (see above map). I highly recommend buying all of the tickets you need for the day or the duration of your stay at one time. The lines are long in Capri (even on a weekday in the off season when I was there). You can also hire a taxi or rent a car, but this is a small island, so the fees are very high.

Once you’re at the Piazzetta, walk to down Via Roma to the bus terminal (also on the above map). Take a bus to Anacapri from there. Hang on tight as your bus winds up the mountain through hairpin turns, and get off at Piazza Vittoria. The Monte Solaro Chairlift (Seggiovia Monte Solaro) is right in that plaza. It’s just like riding a ski lift, but there are several strong men working on either end. They’re there to ensure you don’t fall when you get off. The lift closes at 5PM, so be mindful of the time.

The food; oh the food. Your stomach will literally sing from all of the amazing delectable choices in Capri. In fact, Capri has three signature dishes that can take you from appetizer to dessert. And this is without venturing away from the cuisine for which the island is known—insalata caprese (mozzarella and tomato salad), ravioli capresi (pasta stuffed with local cheese and marjoram), and the rich torta caprese (chocolate and almond cake). Do not leave the island without tasting them all. You will regret it. I even went as far as having all three for lunch and dinner in a single day. (Yes, I have a complicated relationship with food, and we’re very happy together 😉).

Lunch

Michel’angelo in Capri town has a mozzarella bar. You heard me: a cheese bar. Go; eat; die happy. Michel’angelo is conveniently located in the heart of Capri’s main town square. From there, you can walk (or roll if you’ve stuffed yourself) down Via Camerelle for a post-meal gelato at Bar Gelateria Embassy. They make their own waffle cones in the shop, and you can smell them wafting down Via Camerelle as you approach. Via Camerelle is also home to some fantastic upscale shopping if you need to walk off your meal. Make sure you visit Carthusia and bring home one of their signature fragrances to be reminded of your time in Capri.

Happy Hour

When you’re ready for happy hour, you can’t find a better spot than Bar Al Piccolo. The bar/restaurant sits on the Piazzetta right at the top of the funicular from Marina Grande. Their menu of mixed drinks is at least 10 pages long, and as with any apertivo in Italy, they serve snacks along with your drinks (so civilized!). Snag a seat on the upstairs balcony. From there, you can people watch but don’t have to be among the crowd. If craft beer is more your thing, Capri has its own line of brews served at Bar Grotta Azzurra in Anacapri. This off-the-beaten path establishment will give you a glimpse into local life. Sit outside and watch the residents go to and from the nearby park.

Dinner

For dinner, take the funicular back down to Marina Grande and dine alfresco at Ristorante e Pizzeria L’Approdo. The restaurant sits right on the marina. Here, you can watch the lights reflect off the water, as you enjoy the local Capri dinner and dessert.

A true gem on the Amalfi Coast, Positano was a delightful spot for a day trip when I was staying in nearby Amalfi. Think of these two villages like Princes William and Harry, with Positano being the more well-known, in-the-lime-light traditional choice for your Amalfi Coast stay, and Amalfi under-the-radar, quietly, keenly, and cooly killing it just to the south. Both amazing in their own right—lady’s choice for which tickles your fancy. But back to our heir to the throne, Positano, which today is a sophisticated resort town most known for its fancy hotels with drop dead gorgeous views out to the sea, high-end boutique shopping, and some of the best seafood around. Whether you’re popping in for the day or making it your gateway to other area hot spots, Positano is a must-see on any Italy travel bucket list.

To Do

View of Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta

The crown jewel of the Positano coastline is Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta, with its green and yellow tiled dome. It’s the first thing you’ll see if you take the ferry from another town, and it should be your first stop.

From there, wind your way through Via dei Mulini, a back walkway, to Hotel Palazzo Murat, an 18th century palace formerly owned by the King of Naples that was turned into a hotel.

No self-guided tour of Positano is complete without a little shopping in the upscale boutiques along Viale Pasitea. I got one of the most amazing pieces in my jewelry collection at shop called Blitz.

Don’t Miss:

Make time to head inside Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta to view the gold and white arches and altar. And when you’re at Hotel Palazzo Murat, spend some time in the unforgettably gorgeous gardens.

Logistics:

Chiesa isn’t open to tourists at all hours since it’s a functioning church. Make sure to check the schedule before your visit.

The cuisine in the Campania region of Italy is TO. DIE. FOR. The buttery seafood, the rich pastries, the crisp, lemony wine (don’t neglect to taste a local wine—the lemons are grown just up the hill in Ravello)—magnifico!

Don’t Miss:

Positano has some of the best dining on the Amalfi Coast in Chez Black, which has been a staple in the area for years and is named for the owner Salvatore “Black” Russo. You really can’t beat the location right on the Positano Spiaggia (beach). Many of the tables are outside, so you can enjoy the views while you dine on local delicacies, including sea urchins, their famous fish soup, and the Paccheri pasta with Positanese sauce. No worries if you don’t like fish—there are plenty of traditional Italian dishes featuring cheese, bread, pasta, and meat.

When you’re ready for something sweet, head up to the patisserie at La Zagara for local faves including lemon delizia and babà, plus wine, coffee drinks, and gelato.

Logistics:

Chez Black is super popular, even with locals, so make a reservation for busy dining times to snag a seat outside.

Positano is not short on amazing sweeping views of the Mediterranean. No matter where you are in town, all you have to do is look around, and you will be entranced. The best two views in town are from Le Sirenuse hotel and Hotel Poseidon. Plan to spend time on the decks of each, or better yet, take the semicircle walk around from one to the other by way of Via Cristoforo Colombo to Viale Pasitea. For an off-the-beaten path view, walk along Via Positanesi D’America to Fornillo Beach.
