<p>Positano might just be the most postcard-perfect town in Italy, but is it doable with kids? I <a href="https://marionthemap.com/positano-italy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">visited a few years ago</a> (pre-kids!) and have dreamed of going back ever since. Now, with a family in tow, I’m planning a return trip and researching everything to make Positano doable, fun, and family-friendly.</p>

<p>If you&#8217;re wondering how to make the most of this iconic destination with your family, here’s everything you need to know. From easy beach days and gelato breaks to boat rides and nearby towns, these are the top things to do in Positano with kids, parent-friendly tips, and a little firsthand perspective.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="where-is-positano--how-to-get-there-with-kids">Where is Positano? How to do you there?</h2>

<p>Positano is a small cliffside village on the Amalfi Coast in southern Italy. It sits about 37 miles south of Naples, along one of the most scenic and winding coastlines in the world.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1024" height="287" src="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-122-1024x287.jpg" alt="View from Via Positanesi D'America, Positano" class="wp-image-676" srcset="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-122-1024x287.jpg 1024w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-122-300x84.jpg 300w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-122-768x215.jpg 768w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-122.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">View from Via Positanesi D&#8217;America
</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="flying-into-naples-the-best-airport-for-positano">Flying into Naples, the Best Airport for Positano</h3>

<p>If you&#8217;re traveling internationally, the most convenient way to reach Positano is by flying into Naples International Airport (NAP). It&#8217;s the closest major airport to the Amalfi Coast, and flights from other parts of Europe (or connecting through Rome) are usually easy to find.</p>

<p>Why Naples is a good choice for families:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Shorter transfer time to Positano (about 1.5 hours) </li>

<li>Fewer airport crowds compared to Rome </li>

<li>Direct arrivals from many European hubs</li>
</ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="from-naples-to-positano-your-options">How to Get from Naples to Positano</h3>

<p>Once you land in Naples, there are a few ways to reach Positano. Some are scenic, some are budget-friendly, and some are better for traveling with kids.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="🚗-private-car-transfer-most-comfortable-with-kids">Private Car Transfer (Most Convenient with Kids)</h4>

<p>This is the easiest and most stress-free option for families, especially after a long flight. A private driver can meet you at the airport (often with a car seat if requested), help with bags, and take you directly to your hotel in Positano.</p>

<p>It’s a bit more expensive, but not having to haul kids through train stations or ferry terminals might be worth it. Keep in mind that this can be a challenging option if someone in your family has motion sickness, as the roads are very winding leading into Positano and all of the Amalfi Coast.</p>

<p><strong>Estimated time:</strong> 1.5 hours </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="🚆-train--ferry-or-bus-more-adventurous">Train + Ferry or Bus (More Adventurous)</h4>

<p>For a more budget-friendly route, you can take the <a href="https://trainline.tpx.li/h6dkKeYF" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Circumvesuviana</a> train from Naples to Sorrento, then either:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Hop on a ferry to Positano (about 40 minutes). This is what I chose for my trip, and it was lovely to approach Positano from the water.</li>

<li>Take a SITA bus along the Amalfi Coast (about 1.5 hours, very winding, like the car!)</li>
</ul>

<p>Keep in mind that these transfers can be a challenge with kids, who can&#8217;t carry their own luggage, or if you&#8217;re carrying around car seats and a stroller in addition to luggage.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="where-to-stay-in-positano-with-kids">Where to Stay in Positano with Kids</h2>

<p>When I visited Positano a few years ago, I had the chance to stop by <a href="https://booking.tpx.li/x3wIKLg7" data-eafl-id="3761" data-eafl-text="Le Sirenuse" class="eafl-link" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Le Sirenuse</a>, and yes, it’s every bit as dreamy and elegant as you&#8217;d imagine. The view from their terrace is iconic, and the interiors are flawless. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to slow down, sip something sparkly, and soak in the romance of the Positano coast.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="633" src="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-126-1024x633.jpg" alt="View from Le Sirenuse, Positano" class="wp-image-680" srcset="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-126-1024x633.jpg 1024w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-126-300x186.jpg 300w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-126-768x475.jpg 768w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-126.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">View from Le Sirenuse</figcaption></figure>

<p>This property can be wonderful for families with older kids. However, it&#8217;s not an option for anyone with young children. The hotel does not permit guests under the age of six years old due to its design with numerous stairs and high balconies, which can pose a safety risk for younger children.&nbsp; However, the hotel does welcome children ages six and over. Even if you decide to stay elsewhere, it&#8217;s a lovely place to pop in to check out the decor.</p>

<p>Positano is famously vertical; that’s part of its charm. But it can present a challenge when traveling with kids. That’s why it&#8217;s important to choose a hotel close to the sea level, so you’re not climbing dozens of stairs every time you go out for gelato.</p>

<p>One of the top family-friendly picks is <a href="https://booking.tpx.li/qoXz3Sbo" data-eafl-id="3762" data-eafl-text="Hotel Pupetto" class="eafl-link" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hotel Pupetto</a>, located right on Spiaggia Fornillo. It offers direct beach access, spacious family rooms, and an onsite restaurant, making it incredibly convenient for families who want easy, relaxed days by the water.</p>

<p>Another standout is <a data-eafl-id="3763" data-eafl-text="Hotel Palazzo Murat" href="https://booking.tpx.li/xfoV5wdq" class="eafl-link" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hotel Palazzo Murat</a>, right in the heart of town. This hotel is known for its central location and beautiful garden courtyard, and within five minutes, you could have your toes in the Mediterranean sea. It’s a great choice if you want walkability without sacrificing charm. The garden here is also open to the public and a great place to relax and explore as a family, even if you&#8217;re staying elsewhere. Check the website for current hours, events, or any specific access restrictions before your visit.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-138-768x1024.jpg" alt="Gardens at Hotel Palazzo Murat, Positano" class="wp-image-675" style="object-fit:cover" srcset="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-138-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-138-225x300.jpg 225w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-138.jpg 1537w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Gardens at Hotel Palazzo Murat</figcaption></figure>

<p>For families on a tighter budget, <a href="https://booking.tpx.li/4lVs9XmR" data-eafl-id="3764" data-eafl-text="Hotel La Bougainville" class="eafl-link" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hotel La Bougainville</a> offers a more affordable stay without sacrificing location. It sits in mid-level Positano, which means fewer steps than some hillside properties, and it’s close to plenty of shops and dining options.</p>

<p>If you’re traveling with a baby or toddler, avoid anywhere high up in the hills unless you’re ready for daily stair workouts.</p>

<script async src="https://tpwdg.com/content?trs=200833&#038;shmarker=399961&#038;place=Positano&#038;items=3&#038;locale=en-US&#038;powered_by=true&#038;campaign_id=108&#038;promo_id=4039" charset="utf-8"></script>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="best-things-to-do-in-positano-with-kids">Best Things to Do in Positano with Kids</h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Play on the Beach</h3>

<p>Positano has two main beaches: <a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/k1Q36RVnhZ7uKpXu8" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Spiaggia Grande</a> and <a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/kmcUPeXxBvSu63p38" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Spiaggia di Fornillo</a>. Both are pebble beaches, which might take some getting used to for kids used to soft sand, but they’re perfect for skipping stones, collecting sea glass, and splashing in shallow water. Make sure to bring some <a data-eafl-id="3600" data-eafl-text="water shoes" href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CX7K243Y?linkCode=ssc&amp;tag=onamzmaridich-20&amp;creativeASIN=B0CX7K243Y&amp;asc_item-id=amzn1.ideas.YZAQLV2U6L79&amp;ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_aipsflist_aipsfmarionthemap_AF8RVCB1094F7A6RZXMB_asin" class="eafl-link" target="_blank" rel="noopener">water shoes</a> to keep little toes comfortable.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="632" height="1024" src="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-135-632x1024.jpg" alt="Spiaggia di Fornillo, Positano" class="wp-image-672" srcset="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-135-632x1024.jpg 632w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-135-185x300.jpg 185w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-135-768x1244.jpg 768w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-135.jpg 1265w" sizes="(max-width: 632px) 100vw, 632px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Spiaggia di Fornillo</figcaption></figure>

<p>Spiaggia di Fornillo is quieter and a short walk away. Also the chair rentals here are about half the price of those at Spiaggia Grande.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Take a Short Boat Ride</h3>

<p>Many companies offer one- or two-hour <a href="https://getyourguide.tpx.li/95uSV4m4" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">boat tours</a> that stay close to the coast perfect for families. Even a quick loop past nearby coves or sunset cruise can be thrilling for kids. You’ll get stunning views of the Positano coast from the water without committing to a full-day tour.</p>

<script async src="https://tpwdg.com/content?trs=200833&#038;shmarker=399961&#038;place=positano%20boat&#038;items=3&#038;locale=en-US&#038;powered_by=true&#038;campaign_id=108&#038;promo_id=4039" charset="utf-8"></script>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Hop on the Ferry to Amalfi</h3>

<p>The ferry from Positano to Amalfi takes about 30 minutes and drops you into a slightly flatter, more walkable town. Amalfi has a huge piazza, a cathedral with wide steps, and plenty of open space for kids to move around. Fun fact: Amalfi was my favorite Amalfi Coast town, and I think one of the most underrated. </p>

<p><strong>Bonus</strong>: There’s a <a href="https://www.themayor.eu/en/a/view/amalfi-has-the-playground-with-the-most-beautiful-panorama-in-the-world-3084" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">playground</a> right near the harbor.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-124-1024x768.jpg" alt="Heading into Positano by ferry" class="wp-image-678" srcset="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-124-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-124-300x225.jpg 300w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-124-768x576.jpg 768w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-124-800x600.jpg 800w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-124.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Heading into Positano by ferry</figcaption></figure>

<script async src="https://tpwdg.com/content?trs=200833&#038;shmarker=399961&#038;place=positano%20ferry&#038;items=3&#038;locale=en-US&#038;powered_by=true&#038;campaign_id=108&#038;promo_id=4039" charset="utf-8"></script>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Explore the Shops</h3>

<p>Positano is known for its boutique shopping, but you don’t need to “shop” to enjoy the shops. Many ceramics stores let you peek inside and watch artists paint, and some sell Positano-themed toys or beach gear. A few shops also carry lemon soaps, bags of lemon candies, and inexpensive souvenirs like magnets that feel special to kids.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Grab Gelato Every Afternoon</h3>

<p>Kids and Italy? That means daily gelato. <a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/QhdhTp2ntuy21CX68" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Buca di Bacco</a> and <a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/v4o5rRbyzgHuW9PP8" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Collina Positano Bakery</a> both are perfect for a mid-day treat.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Church of Santa Maria Assunta</h3>

<p>Located just steps from the beach, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta is one of Positano’s most iconic landmarks. Its tiled dome is visible from nearly every angle in town, and the inside is just as beautiful. With centuries-old art and a peaceful, cool interior that’s a nice break from the sun. Even if your kids aren’t into architecture, it’s a quick and easy stop that adds a little history and culture to your Positano day.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Chill on the Terrace</h3>

<p>Not everything needs to be go-go-go. One of the top things to do in Positano with kids is simply unwind. That could mean playing <a href="https://amzn.to/3J5spnL" data-eafl-id="3835" data-eafl-text="Uno" class="eafl-link" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Uno</a> on the hotel terrace, reading with a sea view, or sharing a snack while boats go by.</p>

<p>Sometimes the best family travel moments are the quiet ones.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-131-1024x768.jpg" alt="Patio at La Zagara, Positano" class="wp-image-668" srcset="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-131-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-131-300x225.jpg 300w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-131-768x576.jpg 768w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-131-800x600.jpg 800w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-131.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Patio at La Zagara</figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="tips-from-a-parent-for-visiting-positano-with-kids">Tips from a Parent for Visiting Positano with Kids</h2>

<p>Here are some key things I’m keeping in mind when planning a trip to Positano.</p>

<p><strong>Skip the stroller</strong>. It sounds dramatic, but Positano and strollers truly don’t mix. The town is built on steep hills and narrow stone staircases, not flat sidewalks. Instead, plan to use a good carrier for younger kids and pace the day, with plenty of breaks built in.</p>

<p><strong>Water shoes are a game-changer</strong>. The beaches look dreamy, but they’re all pebbles (no sand). Beautiful, yes, but not gentle on little feet. Pack water shoes or secure sandals with straps, especially for the kids. Flip-flops don’t stay on in the water, and those rocks get hot.</p>

<p><strong>Prepare for high prices</strong>. Positano is stunning, but it’s not cheap. Whether it’s gelato, taxis, or dinner with a view, prices are definitely on the higher end. Budgeting accordingly can make your stay more enjoyable.</p>

<p><strong>Choose your hotel location wisely</strong>. This one might be the most important decision of all. A hotel near the beach or central area saves you from constantly climbing stairs just to grab coffee or change clothes. With kids, that kind of convenience is essential.</p>

<p><strong>Bring layers and sun protection</strong>. Even outside of summer, the sun is strong. Pack hats, sunscreen, and breezy layers that can work from beach to dinner.</p>

<p><strong>Plan downtime into your days</strong>. As tempting as it is to explore every corner, part of Positano’s charm is simply being there. Enjoy slow mornings, beach breaks, and terrace time to soak in the magic.</p>

<p><strong>Be flexible with your itinerary</strong>. Between naps, heat, and unpredictable kid moods, it’s better to keep your plans loose. If you spend two hours eating gelato and tossing rocks into the sea instead of visiting Amalfi, that’s just as good.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="bonus-day-trips-from-positano-with-kids">Bonus: Day Trips from Positano with Kids</h2>

<p>Planning a longer stay? Here are some easy day trips that we loved. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="pompeii">Pompeii</h3>

<p>Older kids will be fascinated by the ruins of Pompeii. It’s about 1.5–2 hours away by car, so plan for a guided day trip from Positano.</p>

<script async src="https://tpwdg.com/content?trs=200833&#038;shmarker=399961&#038;place=pompeii&#038;items=3&#038;locale=en-US&#038;powered_by=true&#038;campaign_id=108&#038;promo_id=4039" charset="utf-8"></script>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="ravello">Ravello</h3>

<p>Quieter and more garden-filled than Positano, Ravello is known for its views and cultural festivals. It’s stroller-unfriendly but great for school-aged kids who love music and gardens. Just like Positano, plan for lots of walking.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="682" src="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/kevin-mcmahon-naFVsXYuTg-unsplash-1024x682.jpg" alt="Ravello. <h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="sorrento">Capri</h3>

<p>A day trip from Positano to Capri lets your kids experience the island’s magical mix of crystal-clear waters, colorful gardens, and thrilling boat rides they’ll never forget. With its car-free streets, funicular ride, and delicious gelato at every turn, Capri is the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation for families. <p>In the doldrums of winter, sometimes you just need a little pick-me-up. To combat the dull, gray world you&#8217;re currently seeing outside your window, here are some of the best beaches in the world that we&#8217;ve visited. So many places have beautiful coastal vistas, but to be a best beach, it had to meet a few criteria: relaxing sunbathing <em>and</em> pleasant swimming in addition to a killer view. From continent to continent and around the world, you can&#8217;t go wrong visiting any of these gems.</p>
<p><iframe loading="lazy" src="https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/3/embed?mid=1kXm1ZGj84RrO5TmGox_5aQjBupluYapP" width="640" height="240"></iframe></p>
<h2>Asia</h2>
<h4>Ko Phi Phi Island Beach, Thailand</h4>
<p>Touted as one of the most beautiful yet easily accessible island groups in the world, Ko Phi Phi&#8217;s beaches in <a href="https://marionthemap.com/category/asia/thailand/">Thailand</a> are not to be missed. Just make sure you leave only footprints on this, and really, all of these beaches. Ko Phi Phi is part of a marine National Park, and visitors have taken a toll on the beaches and reefs over the years.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_1665" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1665" style="width: 640px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-1665 size-large" src="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/QCOB1363-1024x768.jpg" alt="Ko Phi Phi Beach, Thailand " width="640" height="480" srcset="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/QCOB1363-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/QCOB1363-300x225.jpg 300w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/QCOB1363-768x576.jpg 768w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/QCOB1363-800x600.jpg 800w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/QCOB1363.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1665" class="wp-caption-text">Ko Phi Phi Beach, Thailand</figcaption></figure></p>
<h4>Vilamendhoo Island Beach, Maldives</h4>
<p>Formerly one of the uninhabited islands of the Maldives, <a href="https://marionthemap.com/vilamendhoo-maldives/">Vilamendhoo Island</a> is now home to a resort and spa with some of the best snorkeling and diving around. With warm island waters and that spectacular view, you can&#8217;t go wrong.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_1653" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1653" style="width: 978px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-1653 size-full" src="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_1552.jpg" alt="Vilamenhdoo Island Beach, Maldives " width="978" height="749" srcset="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_1552.jpg 978w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_1552-300x230.jpg 300w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_1552-768x588.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 978px) 100vw, 978px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1653" class="wp-caption-text">Vilamenhdoo Island Beach, Maldives</figcaption></figure></p>
<h2></h2>
<h2>Europe</h2>
<h4>Amalfi Beach, Italy</h4>
<p>Despite being a little rocky as opposed to sandy, hundreds of beach chairs with umbrellas are set out on this southern <a href="https://marionthemap.com/category/europe/italy/">Italian</a> gem. The warm waves of the Mediterranean combined with this view makes it a favorite. It&#8217;s easy to stay all day!</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_1670" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1670" style="width: 640px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-1670 size-large" src="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Untitled-2-1024x637.jpg" alt="Amalfi Beach, Italy " width="640" height="398" srcset="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Untitled-2-1024x637.jpg 1024w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Untitled-2-300x187.jpg 300w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Untitled-2-768x478.jpg 768w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Untitled-2-1536x955.jpg 1536w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Untitled-2.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1670" class="wp-caption-text">Amalfi Beach, Italy</figcaption></figure></p>
<h4>Praia do Camilo</h4>
<p>What&#8217;s better than a beautiful sandy cove nestled between impressive rock formations? <a href="https://marionthemap.com/lagos-portugal/">Praia do Camilo</a> is also a great spot to watch surfers, and there&#8217;s a delicious seafood restaurant right at the top of the cliff—200 wooden stairs will take you up to it.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_1657" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1657" style="width: 768px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-1657 size-full" src="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_2621-2.jpg" alt="Praia Do Camilo, Portugal best beaches in the world" width="768" height="576" srcset="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_2621-2.jpg 768w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_2621-2-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1657" class="wp-caption-text">Praia Do Camilo, Portugal</figcaption></figure></p>
<h4>Red Beach, Santorini Greece</h4>
<p>Now for a little something different—the sand on this <a href="https://marionthemap.com/category/europe/greece/">Greek</a> beach is literally red. You have to take a little &#8220;hike&#8221; to get there, but the unique experience is absolutely worth it. And don&#8217;t worry, you can easily make it there in your flip flops.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_1656" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1656" style="width: 640px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-1656 size-large" src="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_2070-1024x768.jpg" alt="Red Beach, Santorini, Greece best beaches in the world" width="640" height="480" srcset="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_2070.jpg 1024w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_2070-300x225.jpg 300w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_2070-768x576.jpg 768w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_2070-800x600.jpg 800w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1656" class="wp-caption-text">Red Beach, Santorini, Greece</figcaption></figure></p>
<h2></h2>
<h2>Oceania</h2>
<h4>Malolo Island Beach, Fiji</h4>
<p>This is an idyllic <a href="https://marionthemap.com/category/oceania/fiji/">Fijian</a> island paradise where you can escape the stress of modern living and relax among golden sandy beaches. I&#8217;ve never seen another place that looks more like a postcard.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_1646" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1646" style="width: 640px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-1646 size-large" src="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Fiji-1024x769.jpg" alt="Malolo Island Beach, Fiji best beaches in the world" width="640" height="481" srcset="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Fiji-1024x769.jpg 1024w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Fiji-300x225.jpg 300w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Fiji-768x577.jpg 768w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Fiji-800x600.jpg 800w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Fiji.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1646" class="wp-caption-text">Malolo Island Beach, Fiji</figcaption></figure></p>
<h4>Piha Beach, New Zealand</h4>
<p>Piha Beach&#8217;s black sand, pounding surf, and rugged natural beauty are a favorite with surfers and swimmers from around the world. With Lion Rock sitting right on the water&#8217;s edge, there are unlimited sweeping views across the ocean from this idyllic spot.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_1649" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1649" style="width: 640px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-1649 size-large" src="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/FullSizeRender-33-1024x769.jpg" alt="Piha Beach, New Zealand best beaches in the world" width="640" height="481" srcset="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/FullSizeRender-33-1024x769.jpg 1024w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/FullSizeRender-33-300x225.jpg 300w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/FullSizeRender-33-768x576.jpg 768w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/FullSizeRender-33-800x600.jpg 800w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/FullSizeRender-33.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1649" class="wp-caption-text">Piha Beach, New Zealand</figcaption></figure></p>
<h2>North America</h2>
<h4>Lavalette Beach, New Jersey, USA</h4>
<p>Having grown up at the beach, it would be a crime to not include one of my local hometown beaches in this list! Lavalette is not only beautiful and largely unspoiled by rowdy tourists (hello, Seaside Heights/<em>The Jersey Shore</em>); but it also has a lovely boardwalk for beachside strolls in the offseason.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_1647" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1647" style="width: 640px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-1647 size-large" src="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/FullSizeRender-32-copy-1024x768.jpg" alt="Lavalette Beach, New Jersey best beaches in the world" width="640" height="480" srcset="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/FullSizeRender-32-copy-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/FullSizeRender-32-copy-300x225.jpg 300w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/FullSizeRender-32-copy-768x576.jpg 768w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/FullSizeRender-32-copy-800x600.jpg 800w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/FullSizeRender-32-copy.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1647" class="wp-caption-text">Lavalette Beach, New Jersey</figcaption></figure></p>
<h4>Atlantis Paradise Island, Bahamas</h4>
<p>This is the beach for anyone with beach ADD—aka those of you who have a hard time just sitting on the beach and lazing the day away. Within steps, you have pools, restaurants, casino, and aquarium. What more could you need?</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_1652" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1652" style="width: 640px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-1652 size-large" src="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_0757-1024x768.jpg" alt="Atlantis Paradise Island, Bahamas best beaches in the world" width="640" height="480" srcset="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_0757-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_0757-300x225.jpg 300w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_0757-768x576.jpg 768w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_0757-800x600.jpg 800w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_0757.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1652" class="wp-caption-text">Atlantis Paradise Island, Bahamas</figcaption></figure></p>
<h4>Lewes Beach, Delaware, USA</h4>
<p>One of the things I love the most about this beach and town is that there&#8217;s really something for everyone. In addition to the beach, there&#8217;s also a nearby lake, so it&#8217;s a great spot for people who aren&#8217;t 100% beach lovers. There&#8217;s also an adorable little downtown with great restaurants and boutique shopping.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_1659" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1659" style="width: 640px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-1659 size-large" src="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_3003-1024x768.jpg" alt="Lewes Beach, Delaware best beaches in the world" width="640" height="480" srcset="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_3003-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_3003-300x225.jpg 300w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_3003-768x576.jpg 768w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_3003-800x600.jpg 800w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_3003.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1659" class="wp-caption-text">Lewes Beach, Delaware</figcaption></figure></p>
<h4>Marco Island Beach, Florida, USA</h4>
<p>We may be a little biased on this one since we got married on this beach, but I can honestly admit that I&#8217;ve never seen a bigger beach in my life. This one is huge! It feels like miles of white sand. It&#8217;s the best spot for sandcastle building and beach volleyball, and the calm waves of the Gulf are perfect for kids.</p>

<p>Miami Beach is such a classic for so many reasons. You can get such a rich cultural experience in the nearby city; you can find party after party if that&#8217;s your scene; or you can completely chill with your family. It has something for everyone.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_1654" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1654" style="width: 710px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-1654 size-full" src="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_1980.jpg" alt="Miami Beach, Florida best beaches in the world" width="710" height="532" srcset="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_1980.jpg 710w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_1980-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 710px) 100vw, 710px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1654" class="wp-caption-text">Miami Beach, Florida</figcaption></figure></p>
<h4>Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, USA</h4>
<p>What a lovely little seaside town <a href="https://marionthemap.com/ocean-isle-beach-family-vacation/">Ocean Isle Beach</a> is. It&#8217;s quintessential coastal relaxation here, with some family fun mixed in. Mini golf, boating, outdoor dining, and all you&#8217;d expect from a great family beach trip are found here.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_1644" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1644" style="width: 640px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-1644 size-large" src="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/7528407182367453398_IMG_7777-1024x769.jpg" alt="Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina best beaches in the world" width="640" height="481" srcset="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/7528407182367453398_IMG_7777-1024x769.jpg 1024w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/7528407182367453398_IMG_7777-300x225.jpg 300w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/7528407182367453398_IMG_7777-768x576.jpg 768w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/7528407182367453398_IMG_7777-800x600.jpg 800w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/7528407182367453398_IMG_7777.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1644" class="wp-caption-text">Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina</figcaption></figure></p>
<h4>Santa Cruz Beach, California, USA</h4>
<p>How fun is this amusement park <em>on</em> the beach? The waters of the Pacific are pretty cold most of the year, but there&#8217;s no shortage of fun at Santa Cruz Beach. And you can&#8217;t beat that view!</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_1662" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1662" style="width: 640px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-1662 size-large" src="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_8997-1024x490.jpg" alt="Santa Cruz Beach, California best beaches in the world" width="640" height="306" srcset="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_8997-1024x490.jpg 1024w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_8997-300x144.jpg 300w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_8997-768x368.jpg 768w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/IMG_8997.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1662" class="wp-caption-text">Santa Cruz Beach, California</figcaption></figure></p>
<h4>Santa Monica Beach, California, USA</h4>
<p>An iconic example of the famed Southern California beach lifestyle, Santa Monica Beach has soft sand and warmer waters than its northern neighbors. Within walking distance are popular hotels, shops and restaurants. And any beach with palm trees is a winner in my book! Want more on Santa Monica? <p>I said it before, and I&#8217;ll say it again: every time I plan a vacation, I always wonder why I&#8217;m not going back to Italy. Italy was my first big international trip, and my family is half Italian. Thus, Italy always feels like the most amazing place in the world. When I set out to plan my Tuscany, Italy road trip, I had to keep my eye on the prize. Road trips require <em>so</em> much planning and coordination, because no one wants to drive the wrong way down a one way, run out of gas, or get an international ticket. Lucky you—I planned it for you! Buon viaggio, amore! <span class="emoji">😘</span></p>

<h3><em>Tuscany&#8217;s Villages</em></h3>
<p><figure id="attachment_1176" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1176" style="width: 640px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-1176 size-large" src="http://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/FullSizeRender-376-1024x722.jpg" alt="Siena views from a Tuscany, Italy road trip" width="640" height="451" srcset="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/FullSizeRender-376-1024x722.jpg 1024w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/FullSizeRender-376-300x212.jpg 300w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/FullSizeRender-376-768x542.jpg 768w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/FullSizeRender-376.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1176" class="wp-caption-text">View over Siena from Torre del Mangia in Piazza del Campo</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>There are literally endless quaint and charming villages throughout the region. Each has its own sights, restaurants, and claims to fame. When I started planning, there were a few towns I knew I wanted to see. All of the other additions to the map came by happy accident during my pre-trip research. The good thing about having a car is that you can go wherever you want, even to those remote, lovely, off-the-beaten path gems that other tourists can&#8217;t see.</p>
<h4><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Don&#8217;t Miss:</span></h4>
<p>I absolutely fell in love with <a href="https://www.discovertuscany.com/siena/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Siena</a> and <a href="https://www.discovertuscany.com/montepulciano/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Montepulciano</a>, both of which I chose to stay in. It was a perfect contrast to have them both as home bases for the road trip as well. Montepulciano is the quintessential small town that you can easily walk from end to end in a day. In contrast, Siena is a little larger with more traditional sights, culture, and nightlife.</p>
<p>Having departed from Florence, Montepulciano is the ideal first stop. It&#8217;s under 2 hours drive if you take the direct route, or you can easily make a day of getting there by stopping off in Arezzo or Lucigano. Once you&#8217;ve arrived, Montepulciano is ideal for ambling through the cobbled streets, stretching your legs, and popping into shops and restaurants along the way. Then, when you stay Siena, you&#8217;ll enjoy a more bustling town with tons of activities, art, and restaurants.</p>
<p>Rounding out the villages were <a href="https://www.discovertuscany.com/montalcino/guide-to-montalcino.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Montalcino</a>, a close neighbor of Montepulciano. Montalcino is equally adorable but much smaller than Montepulciano, with a fantastic winery right outside of town (see below). The last village was <a href="http://www.sangimignano.com/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">San Gimignano</a>, known for its medieval skyline dotted with towers built by the town&#8217;s wealthy families. The higher your tower the more money and power you had. San Gimignano is also known for their patron <a href="http://www.travelingintuscany.com/art/ghirlandaio/santafinachapel.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Saint Fina</a>, a little girl who had a <em>very</em> hard life. Her tragic story left me pretty distraught the rest of the day after learning about her!</p>
<h4><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Logistics:</span></h4>
<p>The best way to do this road trip is to create a few home bases in the individual villages, so you aren&#8217;t switching hotels every night. As mentioned, I stayed in Montepulciano (in an outstanding <a href="https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/6660726" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Airbnb</a> right in town) and Siena (hotel on the map!). Both are only about an hour and a half away from each other. Part of the allure of this road trip is being able to take your time to stop and discover things along the way (see &#8220;The Open Road through Tuscany&#8221; below). From Montepulciano, I did day trips to the Pienza and Montalcino area. Then from Siena, I did day trips to San Gimignano and the Chianti region. Plan to drive no more than two hours each day.</p>
<p>All of the cities have some kind of free public parking available, mostly outside of the town walls. You can easily find the parking areas by looking on the town&#8217;s websites. Siena is the only place where you need to be careful, because everyone I know who has parked in Siena has gotten a parking ticket, even if they follow the posted regulations. This includes me!</p>

<p>Tuscany is synonymous with wine. Therefore, no tour of the area is complete without a visit to some of the best wineries Tuscany has to offer. I visited so many beautiful vineyards, but the ones that stuck out all had something special to offer in addition to their wines.</p>
<h4><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Don&#8217;t Miss:</span></h4>
<p>My favorite was <a href="http://en.coltibuono.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Badia a Coltibuono</a>, which basically has it all. The winery is built out of an ancient monastery, complete with beautifully manicured gardens, where you can eat wine grapes right off the vine! Don&#8217;t miss one of the guided tours, during which you can also taste their house-made olive oils. The next amazing find was <a href="http://www.poggioantico.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Poggio Antico</a> near Montalcino, which is a huge facility, complete with an on-site restaurant and tasting room. They do a lot of red blends, which are totally unique in Tuscany. Finally, you absolutely can&#8217;t miss going to a classic vineyard in the Chianti region. <a href="http://www.viticcio.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fattoria Vittorio</a> is intimate and family-run, so it&#8217;s perfect for learning about the region&#8217;s wines. I was lucky enough to get a private tour in English!</p>
<h4><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Logistics:</span></h4>
<p>Almost all wineries in Italy have two daily tours in English, one in the morning around 11AM and one in the afternoon around 3PM. You must make a reservation in advance. There are generally only a few spots per tour, and there may not be a staff member available to give the tour in English if they don&#8217;t know you&#8217;re coming. Additionally, it&#8217;s essential that you&#8217;re on time. The tour will leave without you, and as mentioned, there isn&#8217;t staff milling around to help you join as a late-comer. In fact, plan to arrive about 10 minutes early!</p>

<p>The fabulous thing about having your own car is that you&#8217;ll be able to make so many fun discoveries along the way. One of my favorite experiences was <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Caseificio-Cugusi-Silvana-C-171682226299417/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Caseificio Cugusi</a>, a dairy farm/cheese factory. You choose what you want from their shop and have a picnic overlooking Montepulciano—so dreamy. The other absolutely enchanting discovery was Fosso Bianco at <a href="http://www.bagnisanfilippo.eu/Bagni_San_FIlippo_English/Bagni_San_Filippo.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bagni di San Filippo</a>, a stream in the woods at the confluence of several hot springs. The springs form a series of pools, where where you can swim all year long alongside limestone formations that look almost glacial.</p>
<p>To make the drive easier, reserve a car online well in advance, so you can choose if you want a manual or automatic. Most rental car agencies only have one automatic car available each day, but they&#8217;ll have one waiting for you if you rent ahead. Additionally, make sure to get a data plan on your smart phone since the GPS device rentals are not very reliable. You can get international data on your phone by calling your mobile provider. On Verizon, coverage in Italy was only $2 a day! Bellisimo!</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>I dare you to find someone who has traveled to Capri and&nbsp;comes back home saying it was any less than perfection. (Side note: if you do find that person, maybe you don&#8217;t listen to their travel advice because they are loco). There&#8217;s adventure, glamour, mountains, ocean, signature dishes named for this mighty little island (insalata caprese, anyone?). It&#8217;s a veritable melting-pot paradise where even the most discerning of travelers will fall in love.&nbsp;You&#8217;ll&nbsp;find yourself happily humming the tune&nbsp;to <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkWhkKVvqHU" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Volare</em></a> the entire time you&#8217;re there. Let&#8217;s get your love affair with Capri underway.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Favorite Moments</strong></h3>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><em>Nel Blu, Dipinto Di Blu (In the Blue, Painted Blue)</em></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignnone size-large wp-image-707"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="http://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-157-1024x768.jpg" alt="Capri, Italy Mari on the Map" class="wp-image-707" srcset="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-157-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-157-300x225.jpg 300w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-157-768x576.jpg 768w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-157-800x600.jpg 800w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-157.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Faraglioni di Capri</figcaption></figure>

<p>In Capri, it&#8217;s all about the blue of the sky and water. In some places, you can barely tell where one meets the other, their perfect shades embracing&nbsp;and becoming one on the horizon. As an island, the only way to arrive to Capri is by ferry, usually from Naples or the Amalfi coast. Instead of taking the funicular right up to the main town square, stay down at the port. Here, you can explore the island&nbsp;by sea.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Don&#8217;t Miss:</span></h4>

<p>I had the most fun renting a boat and riding&nbsp;around the island. Head down to <a href="http://www.capri.com/en/c/capri-boat-banana-sport" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Banana Sport</a>&#8216;s outpost, located behind the funicular ticket office (it&#8217;s a little hard to find, so see the above&nbsp;map), and you&#8217;re on your way. There is so much to see on your ride. The famed <a href="http://www.cittadicapri.it/it/s/la-grotta-azzurra-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Grotta Azzura</a> (Blue Grotto &#8211; often closed due to water conditions). The many other colored Grottos (there&#8217;s a green and a white grotto, and possibly more). Marina Piccola, the other main (and smaller as the name denotes) marina on the opposite side of the island. The&nbsp;<a href="http://www.cittadicapri.it/it/s/i-faraglioni-di-capri-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Faraglioni</a> di Capri, huge rock formations in the water, which you can drive through you&#8217;re feeling adventurous.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Logistics:</span></h4>

<p>You may be wondering how I rented a boat without a boating license. Well, my friends, this is Italy, and they are not concerned with lawsuits in the same way we are in America. All you need to rent a boat is a valid driver&#8217;s license, and it doesn&#8217;t have to be an EU license. I was able to use mine from home. The boat is easy to drive as long as you&#8217;re reasonably cautious. But do listen to the short tutorial, as you&#8217;ll be on your own once you leave the port. Make sure to also ask the person who rents you the boat&nbsp;if the Grotta Azzurra is open or closed. You can&#8217;t take the speedboat inside, but the status of the Grotto will give you a clue about the present sea conditions. Closed means it&#8217;s high tide and/or rougher sea. Open means low tide/calm waters.</p>

<p>Additionally, I highly recommend going first thing in the morning. Go when both you and other boaters haven&#8217;t started on the midday cocktails yet! The seas and the sailors are generally calmer then.&nbsp;Capri grew out of the ocean from a tectonic plate, meaning the coastline is all rocky cliffs.&nbsp;Despite that, if you use a reasonable level of precaution, you&#8217;ll be fine!</p>

<p>If the idea of renting a boat freaks you out, don&#8217;t skip the sea tour altogether. There are plenty of companies who will take you on a guided tour with a licensed captain.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.capri.com/en/anacapri" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Anacapri</a>, the more elevated town on the island, is home to <a href="http://www.capri.com/en/s/mount-solaro-cetrella" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Monte Solaro</a>. The highest point in Capri, it boasts sweeping views over the landscape all the way to the mainland.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Don&#8217;t Miss:</span></h4>

<p>Monte Solaro quite literally feels like the closest you can get to heaven. As such, it&#8217;s worth walking around every inch of the peak to see the island and sea from different angles. Plus, you&#8217;ll get a bird&#8217;s eye view of all of the sights you just saw on your boat ride!</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Logistics:</span></h4>

<p>Getting up there is a bit complicated. Assuming you&#8217;re staying in/around Capri&#8217;s main town (also called Capri) or Marina Grande, you&#8217;ll need to take the funicular to the Piazzetta (Piazza Umberto I). Tickets can only be bought in a few places. The easiest is the main lift, bus, and ferry ticket office, which is right where your ferry disembarks in Marina Grande (see above&nbsp;map). I highly recommend buying all of the tickets you need for the day or the duration of your stay at one time. The lines are long in Capri (even on a weekday in the off season when I was there). You can also hire a taxi or rent a car, but this is a small island, so the fees are very high.</p>

<p>Once you&#8217;re at the Piazzetta, walk to down Via Roma to the bus terminal (also on the above map). Take a bus to Anacapri from there. Hang on tight as your bus winds up the mountain through hairpin turns, and get off at Piazza Vittoria. The Monte Solaro Chairlift (Seggiovia Monte Solaro) is right in that plaza. It&#8217;s just like riding a ski lift, but there are several strong men working on either end. They&#8217;re there to ensure you don&#8217;t fall when you get off. The lift closes at 5PM, so be mindful of the time.</p>

<p>The food; oh the food. Your stomach will literally sing from all of the amazing delectable choices in Capri. In fact, Capri has three signature dishes that can take you from appetizer to dessert. And this is without venturing away from the cuisine for which the island is known—insalata caprese (mozzarella and tomato salad), ravioli capresi (pasta stuffed with local cheese and marjoram), and the rich torta caprese (chocolate and almond cake). Do not leave the island without tasting them all. You will regret it. I even went as far as having all three for lunch and dinner in a single day. (Yes, I have a complicated relationship with food, and we&#8217;re very happy together&nbsp;<a href="http://emojipedia.org/winking-face/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">😉</a>).</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Lunch</h4>

<p><a href="http://www.caprimichelangelo.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Michel&#8217;angelo</a> in Capri town has a mozzarella bar. You heard me: a cheese bar. Go; eat; die happy.&nbsp;Michel&#8217;angelo is conveniently located in the heart of Capri&#8217;s main town square. From there, you can walk (or roll if you&#8217;ve stuffed yourself) down&nbsp;Via Camerelle for a post-meal gelato at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/bargelateria.embassycapri/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bar Gelateria Embassy</a>. They make their own waffle cones in the shop, and you can smell them wafting down Via Camerelle as you approach. Via Camerelle is also home to some fantastic upscale shopping if you need to walk off your meal. Make sure you visit <a href="http://www.carthusia.it/forget-me-not.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Carthusia</a> and bring home one of their signature fragrances to be reminded&nbsp;of your time in Capri.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Happy Hour</h4>

<p>When you&#8217;re ready for happy hour, you can&#8217;t find a better spot than&nbsp;<a href="http://www.capri.com/en/c/al-piccolo-bar" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bar Al Piccolo</a>. The bar/restaurant sits on the Piazzetta&nbsp;right at the top of the funicular from Marina Grande. Their menu of mixed drinks is at least 10 pages long, and&nbsp;as with any apertivo in Italy, they serve snacks along with your drinks (so civilized!). Snag a seat on the upstairs balcony. From there, you can people watch but don&#8217;t have to be among the crowd. If craft beer is more your thing, Capri has its own line of brews served at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/bargrottazzurra" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bar Grotta Azzurra</a> in Anacapri. This off-the-beaten path establishment will give you a glimpse into local life. Sit outside and watch the residents go to and from the nearby park.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Dinner</h4>

<p>For dinner, take the funicular back down to Marina Grande and dine alfresco at&nbsp;<a href="http://approdocapri.com/home-3/?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ristorante e Pizzeria L&#8217;Approdo</a>. The restaurant sits right on the marina. Here, you can watch the lights reflect off the water, as you enjoy the local Capri dinner and dessert.</p>

<p>A true gem on the Amalfi Coast, Positano was a delightful spot for a day trip when I was staying in nearby Amalfi. Think of&nbsp;these two villages like&nbsp;Princes William and Harry, with Positano being the more well-known, in-the-lime-light traditional choice for your Amalfi Coast stay, and Amalfi under-the-radar, quietly, keenly, and cooly killing it just to the south.&nbsp; Both amazing in their own right—lady&#8217;s choice for which tickles your fancy. But back to our heir to the throne, Positano, which today is a sophisticated resort town most known for its fancy&nbsp;hotels with drop dead gorgeous views out to the sea, high-end boutique shopping, and some of the best seafood around. Whether you&#8217;re popping in for the day or making it your gateway to other area hot spots, Positano is a must-see on any Italy travel bucket list.</p>

<p>The crown jewel of the Positano coastline is&nbsp;<a href="http://chiesapositano.it/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta</a>, with its green and yellow tiled dome. It&#8217;s the first thing you&#8217;ll see if you take the ferry from another town, and it should be your first stop.</p>
<p>From there, wind your way through&nbsp;Via dei Mulini, a back walkway, to&nbsp;<a href="http://www.palazzomurat.it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hotel Palazzo Murat</a>, an 18th century palace formerly owned by the King of &nbsp;Naples that was turned into a hotel.</p>
<p>No self-guided tour of Positano is complete without a little shopping in the upscale boutiques along&nbsp;Viale Pasitea. I got one of the most amazing pieces in my jewelry collection at shop called <a href="http://www.blitzmoda.it/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Blitz</a>.</p>
<h4><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Don&#8217;t Miss:</span></h4>
<p>Make time to head inside Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta to view the gold and white arches and altar. And when you&#8217;re at&nbsp;Hotel Palazzo Murat, spend some time in the unforgettably gorgeous gardens.</p>
<h4><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Logistics:</span></h4>
<p>Chiesa isn&#8217;t open to tourists at all hours since it&#8217;s a functioning church. Make sure to check the <a href="http://chiesapositano.it/en/opening-hours-and-visits/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">schedule</a> before your visit.</p>

<h3><em>To Eat</em></h3>
<p><figure id="attachment_669" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-669" style="width: 640px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img decoding="async" class="size-large wp-image-669" src="http://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-132-768x1024.jpg" alt="Positano, Italy Mari on the Map" width="640" height="853" srcset="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-132-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-132-225x300.jpg 225w, https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/FullSizeRender-132.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-669" class="wp-caption-text">Lunch at Chez Black</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>The cuisine in the&nbsp;Campania region of Italy is TO. DIE. FOR. The buttery seafood, the rich pastries, the crisp, lemony wine (don&#8217;t neglect to taste a local wine—the lemons are grown just up the hill in Ravello)—magnifico!</p>
<h4><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Don&#8217;t Miss:</span></h4>
<p>Positano has some of the best dining on the Amalfi Coast in&nbsp;<a href="http://chezblack.it/index-en.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Chez Black</a>, which has been a staple in the area for years and is named for the owner Salvatore &#8220;Black&#8221; Russo. You really can&#8217;t beat the location right on the Positano Spiaggia (beach).&nbsp; Many of the tables are outside, so you can enjoy the views while you dine on local delicacies, including sea urchins, their famous&nbsp;fish soup, and the Paccheri pasta with Positanese sauce. No worries if you don&#8217;t like fish—there are plenty of traditional Italian dishes featuring cheese, bread, pasta, and meat.</p>
<p>When you&#8217;re ready for something sweet, head up to the patisserie at <a href="http://www.lazagara.com/web/patisserie/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">La Zagara</a> for local faves&nbsp;including lemon delizia and babà, plus wine, coffee drinks, and gelato.</p>
<h4><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Logistics:</span></h4>
<p>Chez Black is super popular, even with locals, so make a reservation for busy dining times&nbsp;to&nbsp;snag a seat outside.</p>

<p>Positano is not short on amazing sweeping views of the Mediterranean. No matter where you are in town, all you have to do is look around, and you will be entranced. The best two views in town are from <a href="http://sirenuse.it/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Le Sirenuse</a> hotel and <a href="http://www.hotelposeidonpositano.it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Hotel Poseidon</a>. Plan to spend time on the decks of each, or better yet, take the semicircle walk around from one to the other by way of&nbsp;Via Cristoforo Colombo to&nbsp;Viale Pasitea. For an off-the-beaten path view, walk along&nbsp;Via Positanesi D&#8217;America to Fornillo Beach.
