Let me set the scene for you. Eleven people. One trip to Europe. And for seven of them, it was their very first time ever using points and miles to travel.

When my family decided to do a big multigenerational trip to Europe, the task was clear: if we couldn’t make this affordable using points and miles, some of us weren’t going to be able to go. My family has been on points and miles family travel for years, but my parents and my sister’s family of five were starting from scratch. Here I’m sharing the behind-the-scenes of how we pulled it off, what we got right, and what I would tell any family that wants to take a first or big trip on points and miles.

Points and miles are possible to learn, even for total beginners, with the right strategy. You do not need to be a frequent flyer or have a huge income to make it work. Start by Taking Inventory of What Everyone Already Has

The very first thing I did was ask a lot of questions. Before you can build a points and miles strategy for a group, you have to know what you are working with. For every family traveling, I asked the same things:

• What credit cards do you already have?
• Do you have any points sitting on them right now?
• What is your credit score?
• When did you last open a new card?
• Roughly how much do you spend on a credit card?
• Does anyone own a business or have a side hustle?

That last question matters more than people think, because business cards can seriously accelerate your points earning, and you do not need a big company to qualify. A side hustle, a rental, or freelance work can count. Learn more about qualifying for business cards here.

The answers led us to our starting point. My sister’s family had a small stash, under 50,000 points in total, on one Capital One Venture card and an American Express business card. My parents, on the other hand, were sitting on close to 300,000 points on a Bank of America travel card that they didn’t really know how to use. Taking inventory is what let me build a different plan for each household instead of a one-size-fits-all guess.

Build a Card Strategy for Each Family

Here is the key mindset shift for points and miles for beginners: there is no one size fits all strategy. While there are some cards that are generally valuable for most people, a good strategy is personalized. Someone with excellent credit who has not opened a card in three years is in a great spot for a big welcome bonus. Someone who just opened two cards last month probably needs to wait. And, of course, you want to consider if you’re just building a flexible points stash, or if you’re working towards a trip goal.

Since we knew where we were going and we had only about six months to earn the points we needed for our flights, we had to choose an airline that would offer lower points redemptions. That led us to Virgin Atlantic, which offers saver fares in economy starting at 6,000 points per ticket one way from the East Coast, and 29,000 in business class.

Every major bank transfers to Virgin Atlantic, and they offer family/household points pooling, making it the best choice for us. Keep in mind that Virgin Atlantic does have higher taxes and fees on award flights, so you may want to consider another airline for your own Europe on points and miles trip. However, this was by far the best option for us with little time to earn.

My parents wanted to fly business class, and needed to earn a large welcome offer quickly. So I started them with an American Express Platinum. I would normally never recommend this as a starter card to someone new to this hobby because American Express hierarchy rules make it more strategic to start with the American Express Green, then move to the Gold, then move to the Platinum. However, my parents aren’t planning on staying in this hobby, so the focus was just getting them the most points in the shortest time.

My sister started with one of my favorite beginner cards, the Chase Sapphire Preferred, because her family spends a lot on online groceries from Instacart and takeout. Her family also plans to be in this hobby for longer, so I wanted to ensure she had a keeper card.

A few ground rules I always recommend:

• Only put normal spending on the card. Never buy things you would not otherwise buy just to hit a bonus.
• Pay it off in full every month. If you carry a balance, the interest wipes out the value of the points. This only works if you treat the card like a debit card.
• Be patient. The welcome bonus is where the real value is, so do not rush to the next card before you have earned the one in front of you.

How We Booked the Flights to Europe on Points and Miles

Our trip included a land tour in southern Italy, since my dad wanted to see where his family came from. Next, we left Italy for a Mediterranean cruise.

Check every airport near you, not just your home one

We are in the Philadelphia area, but I did not limit myself to PHL. I looked at flights out of Philadelphia, Newark, JFK, DC, and Baltimore, because award availability and pricing can be wildly different from one airport to the next. A short drive or a cheap positioning flight to a different airport can save you a mountain of miles. To map out which airlines even fly the route, I used a free tool called FlightConnections.

Compare the options before you transfer anything

When I priced out economy round trip per person, the difference between programs was huge:

• American: around 87,500 miles, Philadelphia to Naples
• United: around 77,000 miles, Newark to Naples
• Virgin Atlantic: around 24,000 miles, JFK to London, then onward to Naples

Read that last one again. Virgin Atlantic was a fraction of the others. That is the whole game right there. Same ocean, same destination, wildly different price depending on which airline’s miles you use and how you route it. This is why I never just book with the first airline that comes to mind.

We put it to a vote in our group, and Virgin Atlantic won by a landslide. The other reason it was such a smart pick: American Express, Chase, Capital One, Citi, and Bilt all transfer to Virgin Atlantic. That meant almost everyone in our group could get there from whatever flexible points they were earning, instead of being locked into one airline’s currency.

Use free tools to check award availability

Award seats are limited, especially when you need a lot of them at once. Since our flights were almost a year out and not even released yet, I used June of the previous year as a stand-in to get a feel for how many points we would likely need and how available the seats tend to be.

There are paid tools for this, but there are good free ones too, so you do not have to spend money to start searching. Always confirm what you see directly on the airline’s website before you transfer any points, because once you transfer, you usually cannot transfer back. For this trip, I used point.me/amex, which is always free for American Express cardholders, and seats.aero, which has free and paid versions. If you want to use the Pro version of seats.aero, but don’t want to pay for a whole year, just sign up for a month when you’re looking and cancel.

Book one way for flexibility

We always book our flights one way rather than round trip. It gives us maximum flexibility, and it buys some of our family members more time to keep earning points for their return leg. Award pricing is usually the same whether you book one way or round trip, so you rarely lose anything by splitting it up, and you gain a lot of options.

Get Creative: Transfer Partners and Repositioning

Transfer partners are your superpower. Flexible points from banks like Amex, Chase, Capital One, Citi, and Bilt can move to many different airlines. That means you are not stuck. If one airline wants a fortune in miles, you check that bank’s other partners and find the one that prices the same flight far cheaper. That is exactly how we landed on Virgin Atlantic.

Repositioning opens up cheaper awards. Sometimes the best deal is not from your home airport at all. Flying yourself to a different city first, called a positioning flight, can unlock much better award space. It sounds advanced, but it is really just being willing to look one step beyond the obvious route.

Booking Our Lodging

Hotels and lodging are another area where you can easily use points and miles. Hyatt in particular is a sweet spot for families and offers locations across Europe, in addition to other well-known chains like Marriott and Hilton. Choice Hotels also has a sizable footprint in Europe.

However, we were doing some unconventional lodging since we were going to be in a very rural area in Italy, and then we immediately got onto a cruise. For Italy, we stayed at Country House Nonna Pina, an agriturismo run by a family that also offers meals with local ingredients made by the owner. We really enjoyed our stay here, and we were able to “erase” the cost using Capital One Miles.

Booking the Cruise

After the land tour, we boarded a ship for a Mediterranean cruise from Italy to Croatia, Montenegro, and Greece, which was another place that the ability to “erase” travel purchases was essential. Certain cards, like the Capital One Venture, let you redeem points for a statement credit, as well as the Bank of America Travel Rewards card my parents already had, and some Air Canada Aeroplan cards.

For a cruise, the best strategy is to only pay the minimum deposit at booking, continue earning points before the final deposit is due, and erase a large portion of it after the final payment hits your statement.

Final Thoughts

Coordinating points and miles travel for eleven people across three households was, I’ll be honest, a lot. But experiencing this trip together as a family made it all worth it. Rewards travel really is for anyone who is willing to learn.

  How we booked Europe on points and miles for a family of 11: our card strategy, Virgin Atlantic award flights, and how we erased our lodging and cruise.

London is one of the best cities for an international family trip, and for good reason. Some of the city’s best museums are completely free, kids under 11 ride buses and the Underground for free with a paying adult, and there’s always a park or playground nearby when everyone needs a break. With three days in London, you can see many of the city’s biggest sights, mix in plenty of kid-friendly fun, and still keep the pace manageable for the whole family.

This London with kids itinerary keeps each day in a single part of the city, so you’re not moving across the city in one day, which can be daunting: London is huge. Day one covers Westminster and the River Thames, day two is the museum district and Hyde Park, and day three is the Tower and the east side. If you have more time, I’ve added some of my favorite additional day trips to round out a 4- or 5-day stay across the pond.

Before You Go: Quick Planning Notes

Best Time to Visit London With Kids

London has plenty to see and do in every season, but you may prefer one over the other for your family:

• April to June: Long days, gardens in bloom, and the weather is as good as London gets. This is the best window for families.
• July and August: Warmest and busiest. Attractions sell out, prices can climb, and museums get packed. Book everything ahead of time. Summer heat is also a real consideration now in a way it wasn’t ten years ago, with heat waves creeping in.
• September and October: Still mild, noticeably quieter once British schools go back, and hotel prices come down.
• November to March: Short days and plenty of grey skies, but the city comes to life around the holidays. Christmas lights, ice rinks, and every free museum is a great idea when it’s raining. If you’re going in December, I have a full guide to Christmas in London with kids.

Whatever month you pick, pack a rain jacket for everyone and shoes that can get wet. London rain is rarely dramatic, but it’s almost always present.

Getting Around London With Kids

London has a fabulous public transit system that makes getting around with kids a breeze. Children under 11 travel free on the Tube, DLR, Overground and Elizabeth line when they’re with a fare-paying adult, up to four kids per adult. They don’t need a ticket at all. You take them through the wide gate with you. Under 11s also ride buses and trams free at any time, with or without an adult.

For kids aged 11 to 15, ask staff at any Tube station to add the Young Visitor discount to an Oyster card. It gives them child fares and lasts 14 days, which covers almost any family trip.

Adults just tap a contactless card or phone. There’s a daily cap, so once you’ve made a few journeys the rest of the day is effectively free. Buses are a flat fare no matter how far you go, and the Hopper fare means you can change buses as many times as you like within an hour for that one fare.

Some things to know to make your day easier:

• Buses can be better than the Tube with young children. You get a view, there are no stairs, and the top deck front seats are the cheapest attraction in London.
• Not every Tube station has a lift (elevator). If you have a stroller, check step-free access before you plan a route, or take the bus instead. Buses are one step up from the street to enter, so that’s much easier with a folded stroller.
• The Uber Boat river service on the Thames is real public transport rather than a tour, and it’s a good way to cover distance while the kids think they’re on a boat ride. Keep in mind that the inside has no AC, so you’ll want to sit in the back where it’s open on warm days.

Practical Tips for London With Kids

• The big museums are free. The British Museum, Natural History Museum, Science Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, Tate Modern and National Gallery all cost nothing to walk into.
• Book paid attractions in advance. The Tower of London, the London Eye, and anything Harry Potter related sell out in school holidays.
• Pubs are family friendly at lunch. Most welcome children until early evening and almost all have a kids menu.
• Public toilets are scarce and often cost money. Use the ones in museums and department stores while you have the chance.
• Look right before you cross. It’s painted on the road for a reason, and it’s the one thing worth drilling into kids before you land.
• Build in park time. London has green space everywhere, and a park is a great way to end a long sightseeing day.
• Sort out your data before you land. You’ll be checking maps and bus routes constantly in London, so having a connection the moment you step off the plane matters. Where to Stay in London With Kids

London is really big, so when you’re planning London with kids the neighborhood matters as much as the hotel. What you want is somewhere with a Tube station, somewhere with a range of places to eat, and a park within walking distance. These areas do all of that.

South Kensington

This is the easiest area for families. The Natural History Museum, Science Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum are all on the same street, Hyde Park is a short walk north, and the neighborhood is calm in the evening. If you’re traveling with younger kids and want to be able to walk home for a nap, stay here.

Westminster and the South Bank

Staying near the river puts you walking distance from Big Ben, the London Eye, Borough Market and the Tate Modern. The South Bank in particular is a good base because the whole riverside walk is flat, wide and stroller friendly, and there’s almost always something happening on it.

Covent Garden and Bloomsbury

Central, walkable, and close to the British Museum. Covent Garden has street performers going most of the day, which buys you a free half hour whenever you need one. Bloomsbury just north is quieter and often better value, and Coram’s Fields is there, a seven-acre playground where adults are only allowed in if they arrive with a child under 16.

East London

On our last trip, we stayed at the Hyatt Place London City East. Our room was spacious for being in the city, included free breakfast, and was walking distance to a Tube station and other attractions like the Tower of London. We used points to get our stay for no cash out of pocket.

3 Day London Itinerary

Here’s how I recommend breaking down the days on your London with kids itinerary:

• Day 1: Westminster, Buckingham Palace, and the river
• Day 2: The South Kensington museums and Hyde Park
• Day 3: Tower of London, Tower Bridge, and Borough Market

Day 1: Westminster and the River Thames

Start at Westminster station. Come up the stairs and Big Ben is directly in front of you, which is a delightful first moment for kids who have only seen it on TV. The bridge behind it gives you the postcard view back toward the London Eye.

This is a great time to actually ride the London Eye if it’s on your list, and you’re not afraid of heights. Make sure to buy a timed ticket in advance, and remember that you will still wait in the line to get into a pod, even with a timed ticket. On hot or cold days, the London Eye can be a great break since the pods are temperature controlled, with both heat and AC.

Walk up Whitehall toward Trafalgar Square. You’ll pass Downing Street behind its gates and the Horse Guards, where two mounted soldiers sit completely still while tourists photograph them.

Trafalgar Square is worth a stop. The four bronze lions at the base of Nelson’s Column are the thing kids head straight for, but you’re meant to stay on the stone bases rather than climb onto the lions themselves. The bronze has been worn thin in places after more than a hundred and fifty years of climbers, and the statues stand around eleven feet tall. The plinth gets you the same photo without climbing.

The National Gallery is in the Square and free. With kids, don’t try to do the whole gallery. Pick three paintings, find them, and leave, or play the animal game, where each child counts how many of a certain animal they see in the paintings.

Buckingham Palace is a fifteen minute walk through St James Park, which is one of the nicest walks in central London and has a lake full of pelicans. If you want to see the Changing of the Guard, check the schedule ahead (it doesn’t run every day), and get there early, so little ones can see (it’s standing only). It is free, and can get crowded, but it is worth doing.

In the afternoon, get out on the water. The Uber Boat runs from Westminster Pier and takes you east past the whole skyline. You can ride it to Tower Bridge or all the way to Greenwich, if you’re enjoying the ride.

For the evening, Covent Garden is a ten minute walk from Trafalgar Square and the street performers run until late. You can get dinner at one of the food stalls, and the covered market is a good place to sit if it’s raining.

Day 2: Museums and Hyde Park

Day two is the reason South Kensington is such a good base for London with kids. Three world-class museums, all free, all within two blocks.

Start at the Natural History Museum and get there for opening. The building is incredible, with a blue whale skeleton hanging in the entrance hall. The dinosaur gallery is the main event, and it gets busy fast, so do it first before the other galleries. A free timed ticket is recommended but not strictly mandatory for general admission, though booking online in advance helps you skip the main queue.

The Science Museum is directly next door, and it’s great for a hands-on experience. Wonderlab is the interactive gallery for kids aged between 7 and 14, and it’s the one paid part of the museum.

The Victoria & Albert Museum is across the road and is the most adult-focused of the three, but the courtyard has a shallow paddling pool that children run straight into on a warm day. It’s a good place to eat lunch and let everyone reset.

In the afternoon, walk north into Kensington Gardens. The Diana Memorial Playground is here and it’s the best free playground in central London, built around a wooden pirate ship in a sand pit. Adults are only admitted with a child, so there are no strangers milling around. It gets busy in the afternoon, and they cap numbers, so there can be a line.

From there you can walk through Hyde Park to the Serpentine, where you can rent a pedal boat, or just keep walking east and come out near Marble Arch.

Day 3: The Tower, Tower Bridge, and Borough Market

The Tower of London is the one paid attraction in this itinerary that’s worth the money. It’s a real castle, there are live ravens, the Crown Jewels are inside, and the Yeoman Warder tours are included in your ticket and can be really funny. They are performers as much as guides, and they hold children’s attention very well.

Book online for a timed slot and go first thing. The Crown Jewels queue is the longest between midday and mid-afternoon. Children under five are free.

Tower Bridge is right there and you can walk across it for free. If you want to go up, the Tower Bridge Exhibition takes you along the high walkways with a glass floor you can look straight down through. Kids can follow the Tower Bridge Cat Trail to collect stamps in an activity booklet or passport by finding Bella the Tower Bridge Cat along the high-level walkways and engine rooms.

Cross the bridge and walk west along the south bank to Borough Market. This is the best food stop in this itinerary. It’s a real market rather than a tourist one, and you can ask for samples. Picking lunch from the different stalls can be more fun for kids than sitting in a restaurant. Go on a weekday if you can, because Saturday is chaos.

The Internet famous Turnips at Borough Market is worth the hype. They serve fresh, whole strawberries in a cup and generously coated with warm, silky melted Belgian milk chocolate from a fountain machine. One cup was enough for the four of us to share. Find them at stall 43.

From Borough Market you’re a short walk from the Tate Modern and the Millennium Bridge, which crosses to St Paul’s. Walking the bridge is free and the view back along the river is one of the best in the city. The Tate Modern is free to enter, although timed tickets are recommended. If you don’t want to see the exhibits, skip to the cafe, which has an outdoor balcony that has a lovely view over the Thames. It can be a great spot for a quick snack or walking break.

If anyone still has energy, Sky Garden is free with an advance booking and gives you the best view in London without the London Eye queue.

What to Add If You Have More Time in London With Kids

Three days covers central London. If you have more time, these are the side trips I’d add. Each one is a full day, so plan for that when adding them on.

Richmond

Richmond is twenty minutes from central London and feels like a quaint village. There’s a deer park, a riverside, and if anyone in your family watches Ted Lasso, many scenes from the show were filmed there. I have a full guide to spending a day in Richmond with kids.

Kew Gardens

Kew Gardens is about the same distance out and a short hop from Richmond, so you could pair the two if you had a long day or wanted to stay over nearer to LHR on your first or last day. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site and it’s enormous, with glasshouses full of plants you won’t see anywhere else. For kids the draws are the Treetop Walkway, which puts you up at canopy height, and the Children’s Garden, which is one of the biggest play spaces in London (it is massive and endless!). Plan on most of a day.

Greenwich

Greenwich is a spot that feels different from central London, and getting there is half the fun because you can take the river boat all the way down. The Cutty Sark is a real tea clipper you can walk underneath, the National Maritime Museum is free, and up the hill in Greenwich Park, the Royal Observatory lets kids stand on the Prime Meridian with a foot in each hemisphere. The view back toward the city from the top of the park is beautiful.

Harry Potter

The Warner Bros Studio Tour is where the Harry Potter films were made. It’s outside London, tickets sell out weeks ahead, and it takes a full day. If you have a child who is into the books, it’s worth building the trip around.

The British Museum

The British Museum deserves its own morning rather than being squeezed in. It’s free, it’s enormous, and the Egyptian galleries are fun and interesting for the whole family.

Even More London

If you’re still looking for more to do in London, the best way forward is to consider what your family likes best. After all, London is a huge city like NYC or San Francisco, and there’s truly something for everyone.

If you’re movie fans, Notting Hill is a short trip from the museum district and lovely to walk through. Portobello Road market runs on Saturday and is the one place that’s better when it’s busy.

If you have Beatles fans, the Abbey Road crossing is in St John’s Wood and costs nothing, and there’s a shop next to it selling endless Beatles merchandise. Liverpool is the real Beatles home, but it’s two and a half hours each way by train, which makes it an overnight rather than a day trip.

A Note on Summer Heat and Air Conditioning

We’ve now visited London twice in June, and it’s important from an American family perspective (aka AC lovers) that you know what to expect. UK summers have changed dramatically in recent years. Summer 2025 was the warmest on record for the UK, with four separate heatwaves. Summer 2026 ran hotter still, and by mid-July had already logged more days above 86℉ than typical for entire summers. The UK all-time record is 104.5℉.

Most of the city still has no air conditioning. Hotels, restaurants, shops, homes, and much of the transport network were built for a cool damp climate that never needed it. A 95℉ day in a building with no cooling is a very different experience from a 95℉ day in Florida, and you’re going to feel it.

If you’re traveling in June, July, or August, a few things help:

• Confirm your hotel has air conditioning. Many older and mid-range London hotels still don’t have it, and a fan isn’t the same thing when nobody can sleep. Even places with AC usually only get down to 74℉ at the coolest, which can make settling down for sleep a challenge.
• Know which Tube lines are cooled. The deep lines run hot and have no air conditioning, which includes the Central, Northern, Piccadilly, Bakerloo, Victoria and Jubilee. The District, Circle, Hammersmith and City, Metropolitan and Elizabeth lines are air conditioned, and so are the buses. On a hot day, it’s worth taking a slower cooled route over a faster hot one.
• Use the museums as your midday cooling break, but check first whether they’re air conditioned. The British Museum, for example, doesn’t have full air conditioning across the whole building, which can make certain galleries uncomfortably hot on a summer day.
• Carry refillable water bottles both for kids and adults. Refill points are common across the city now, and any pub or restaurant that serves alcohol has to give you free tap water if you ask for it.
• Move the outdoor parts of each day to the morning and the evening. London stays light until well past nine in midsummer, so an evening park walk is easy to build in.

None of this means avoid summer! But if your dates are flexible, late May, September, and early October give you long days without the weather risk, and that’s a large part of why the shoulder seasons are the better bet for London with kids.

The major museums cost nothing, the parks are free, children ride public transit free, and the best views in the city are from Sky Garden and the Millennium Bridge, which are also free. Accommodation and food are where most of your budget will go. However, accommodations can become significantly cheaper or even free when utilizing points and miles.

What is the best area to stay in London with kids?

South Kensington is the easiest, because three major museums and Hyde Park are all walkable and the area is quiet at night. The South Bank and Bloomsbury are also good, and both are more central. East London can be lovely if you are prioritizing the Tower Bridge area.

Is London walkable with young children?

Central London is very walkable, but distances look shorter on a map than they feel. Plan on using buses between neighborhoods and walking within them. Not all Tube stations have lifts (elevators), so check access if you have a stroller.

Do Americans need anything to enter the UK besides a passport?

Yes. US citizens now need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to visit the UK, and that includes babies and kids. It costs £20 per person and you apply through the official UK ETA app or on the UK government website. It usually takes a few minutes, but give yourself at least three working days before your flight in case yours needs extra review. Your ETA is linked to the passport you apply with and lasts two years or until that passport expires, so if you renew anyone’s passport before the trip, apply with the new one. Only use the official app or gov.uk, since other websites charge a lot more for the same thing.

London is easier with kids than most people expect. The biggest museums are free, children ride the buses and the Underground for nothing, and there’s a park every few blocks for the moment when everyone needs to stop walking.

London is big, and the difference between a good day and an exhausting one is usually how much time you spent getting between places instead of being in them. The key to an enjoyable trip is grouping your time by location to avoid hopping around too much in one day.

If you’re trying to figure out the best things to do in London with your family, this is my list of 22, with the family tips and logistics that make each one go more smoothly.

22 Best Things to Do in London With Kids

1. Start With a Guided Tour

Starting with a tour is one of the best things to do in London with kids on your first day, before you do anything else. It changes the rest of the trip. Instead of walking past buildings and checking a map to figure out what they are, you recognize things, and the kids remember places much better when someone has told them a story about them. London especially rewards this, because so much of the city is layered with history that’s invisible if nobody points it out.

There are three good ways to do it, and which one you pick depends mostly on the age of your kids. Book a morning slot whatever you choose. Patience is always highest before lunch.

Hop On Hop Off Bus

This is the one I’d choose with younger children. We like to treat these as our transportation for the day rather than as a tour, so we ride a few stops, get off for a look or a snack, then get back on when legs start to get tired. You cover a lot of ground without anyone having to walk it, with a wonderful view from the top deck.

Walking Tour

A walking tour gives you far more detail and takes you into the smaller streets a bus can’t reach. It’s the better option if your kids can handle a couple of hours on foot with breaks. Pick a shorter route and do it early in the day, when everyone has the most stamina.

River Cruise

A cruise on the Thames is the easiest one to sell to kids, because who doesn’t love a boat ride? You get the whole skyline from the water, everyone is sitting down, and it works well on a first afternoon when the jet lag is still catching up with you.

2. Ride a Red Double Decker Bus

Riding a red double decker bus is one of the simplest things to do in London with children, and you don’t need a tour bus for it. The regular London buses are double deckers, and the front seats on the top deck give you the best view in the city for the price of a normal fare.

Children under 11 ride the buses free at any time, so you’re only paying for the adults. It’s a flat fare no matter how far you go, and the Hopper fare means you can change buses as many times as you like within an hour without paying again.

If you want a route that passes a lot of landmarks, numbers 11, 15 and 24 all do well. Route 15 also runs the old style Routemaster buses on part of its route, which are the ones with the open platform at the back.

One thing that makes all of this easier is sorting out your data before you land. You’ll be checking maps and bus routes constantly in London, so having a connection the moment you step off the plane matters. 3. See Big Ben and Westminster

Coming up out of Westminster station and finding Big Ben directly in front of you is a good first moment, especially for kids who have only ever seen it in cartoons. It’s bigger than they expect and it’s right there, with no build up.

Walk out onto Westminster Bridge for the view back toward the London Eye, which is the one most people picture when they think of London. The Houses of Parliament run along the river beside it, and the whole stretch is flat and easy with a stroller.

Westminster Abbey is next door if you want to go inside. With younger kids I’d look at it from the outside, explain that this is where the coronations happen, and save the interior for a trip when they’re older.

4. Explore Trafalgar Square

Trafalgar Square is an easy stop because it’s open, flat and full of space to move around. After narrow pavements and busy streets, that matters more than it sounds. The four bronze lions at the base of Nelson’s Column are the highlight of the stop.

One thing worth knowing before they do. You’re meant to stay on the stone bases rather than climb onto the lions themselves. The signs around the square ask people not to climb the statues, and while it isn’t strictly enforced, there are good reasons for it. The lions have been there since 1867 and generations of climbers have worn the bronze thin in places, with cracks along the backs and tails where people use them as a step. They also stand around eleven feet tall, and falls have caused serious injuries.

The stone plinth gets you the same photo without either problem, so that’s where we’d put the kids.

The National Gallery sits along one whole side of the square and it’s free to walk into. With small children I wouldn’t attempt the full collection. Choose two or three paintings ahead of time, find those, and let that be the visit. The gift shop makes a reasonable trade for their cooperation.

There are public toilets and cafes here, which is worth knowing because both are harder to find when you visit London.

5. Watch the Changing of the Guard

The Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace is free and it’s a thing worth doing once, even though it’s crowded and you’ll spend more time waiting than watching. The uniforms, the band, and the horses are what the kids remember.

It doesn’t run every day, and the schedule changes with the season, so check before you build your morning around it. This is the official Household Division schedule page.

Watching the Changing of the Guard is one of the most typical things to do in London, so get there at least forty-five minutes early if you want a spot at the gates. If you arrive later than that, don’t fight the crowd. Stand along The Mall instead and watch the guards march past on their way in, which is honestly a better view for a short child anyway.

6. Walk Through St James’s Park

The route from Trafalgar Square to Buckingham Palace goes straight through St James’s Park, and it’s a nice 15-minute walk through central London. If you’re doing the Changing of the Guard, you’ll pass through the park anyway, so give yourself some extra time and treat it as a stop rather than just part of the route.

There’s a lake through the middle with a bridge across it that has a great view of the palace. The park is also known for its pelicans, which have lived there since the 1600s when they were given to the king as a gift from a Russian ambassador. They get fed in the afternoon and kids love watching it.

7. Ride the London Eye

The London Eye is a giant observation wheel on the South Bank of the River Thames. The full rotation takes about 30 minutes, giving you views across central London from the glass capsules. It moves slowly, so there’s no need to wait for it to stop. You simply step on and off while it continues moving.

Book online and choose a timed slot. Queues can be long if you buy tickets at the door, and waiting around with young kids isn’t ideal.

Go on a clear day if you can be flexible, and go late in the afternoon in winter, when it gets dark early and you get the city lit up.

This is one of the only spots in London with consistent air conditioning, so it’s also worth hopping on if you visit during a heat wave.

8. Go Up to Sky Garden for Free

Sky Garden is at the top of a building in the City with a public garden inside and a viewing terrace, and the whole thing is free. You book a slot online in advance and they release tickets a few weeks ahead, so this needs a little planning but no money.

The view takes in the Thames, Tower Bridge and the Shard, and because it’s indoors it works on a day when the weather has ruined everything else. This is one of the best things to do in London with kids that costs nothing at all, there’s no ticket queue and there’s space to sit down.

9. Take a Boat Down the Thames

The Uber Boat river service is proper public transport rather than a sightseeing cruise, which means it’s cheaper and you can use it to actually get somewhere. It runs the length of central London, so you can ride from Westminster all the way east past the whole skyline and get off wherever you’re headed next.

This is one of my favorite things to do in London with kids. They get the fun of a boat ride while you’re also getting from one part of the city to another. Everyone can sit down, and you get a completely different view of London than you would from the Underground.

Sit outside at the back if the weather allows. There is no air conditioning inside.

10. Visit the Tower of London

Of all the paid things to do in London, this is the one I’d spend the money on. It’s a real castle in the middle of the city, nearly a thousand years old, and there’s enough going on inside that kids stay interested for hours.

The Crown Jewels are here, and so are the ravens, which have their own keeper and their own legend about the kingdom falling if they ever leave. The Yeoman Warder tours are included with your ticket and they’re the best part of the visit. The warders are performers as much as guides, and they hold children’s attention better than any audio guide.

Book a timed slot online and go as early as you can. The queue for the Crown Jewels builds through the morning and is at its worst from midday onward.

Children under five are free. Do the Warder tour first while everyone is fresh, then the Crown Jewels, then let the kids run around the walls and the green at the end when nobody wants to concentrate anymore.

11. Walk Across Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge is the one people actually picture when they think of things to do in London, and walking across it costs nothing. It’s right beside the Tower, so the two go together naturally in the same day.

If you want more than the walk, the Tower Bridge Exhibition takes you up into the high walkways between the two towers, where there’s a glass floor you can look straight down through at the traffic and the river.

Ask about the Tower Bridge Cat Trail when you enter. Kids can collect stamps in an activity booklet or passport by finding Bella the Tower Bridge Cat along the high-level walkways and engine rooms.

The bridge still lifts for tall ships, and the schedule is published on the Tower Bridge website. If you can time your visit to catch a lift, it’s worth planning around.

12. Visit Borough Market

Borough Market is my favorite food stop in London with kids. It’s a proper working market rather than a tourist one, it has been on the same site in some form for around a thousand years, and it’s under a railway arch so it works in the rain.

What makes it good with children is that you’re not sitting still in a restaurant waiting for food. You walk through, everyone points at what they want, and you build lunch from six different stalls. There are samples everywhere, which handles the problem of a child who says they don’t like something they have never tried.

Turnips at Borough Market, which serves fresh, whole strawberries in a cup and generously coated with warm, silky melted Belgian milk chocolate from a fountain machine, is absolutely worth the hype. The lines are not as long as you see on TikTok. It costs around £8.50 to £9.50 per cup, but your whole family can share one. We got two, and it was a lot. You can find them at Stall 43.

Go on a weekday if you can. Saturday is shoulder to shoulder and harder with a stroller or a small child who wants to look at things.

13. Visit the Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum is free and it’s the one I’d put first if you only do one museum in London. The building itself gets a reaction before you’ve seen a single exhibit, with a huge vaulted entrance hall and a blue whale skeleton hanging from the ceiling. There are even huge dinosaur fossil recreations outside before you enter.

The dinosaur gallery is what most kids come for, and it’s the busiest part of the museum, so go there first and work backward through everything else. The rest of the collection is enormous and you’re not going to see it all, which is fine. Because there’s no ticket, there’s no pressure to get your money’s worth.

Check the website the day before, because free timed tickets are sometimes needed during busy periods.

14. Visit the Science Museum

The Science Museum is directly next door to the Natural History Museum, which makes South Kensington the easiest area in London for a family day. This is the better of the two for kids who need to touch things rather than look at them.

Wonderlab is the interactive gallery and it’s the one part of the museum you pay for. It’s worth it if your kids are between 7 and 14 years old. There are live demonstrations, things to pull and push and set off, and it holds a wide age range at the same time, which isn’t easy to find.

If your children love interactive museums, this is the one you should choose!

15. Visit the British Museum

The British Museum is free, and it’s so big that going in without a plan is a mistake with children. The building alone is worth walking into for the Great Court, which is a covered courtyard with a glass roof in the middle of the museum.

With kids, I’d go straight to the Egyptian galleries. The mummies are the thing they’ll talk about afterward, and the Rosetta Stone is on the way. Do that, see anything else you happen to walk past, and leave before anyone gets tired of it.

This deserves its own morning rather than being added onto the end of a full day. It is a fifteen minute walk from Covent Garden if you want to pair the two.

16. Play at the Diana Memorial Playground

This is the best free playground in central London, in Kensington Gardens, and it’s built around a full sized wooden pirate ship sitting in an enormous sand pit. There are also teepees, a sensory trail and plenty of space to run.

One thing worth knowing is that adults are only allowed in if they arrive with a child, which is a safeguarding rule and also means the whole place is genuinely built for kids rather than shared with everyone else.

It gets busy in the afternoon and they cap the number of people inside, so there can be a wait to get in. From the playground you can walk on through Hyde Park to the Serpentine and rent a pedal boat.

17. Visit London Zoo

London Zoo is in Regent’s Park. It opened in 1828 and is one of the oldest scientific zoos in the world, and a lot of it has been rebuilt in recent years, so it doesn’t feel like an old zoo.

The walk-through enclosures are the parts kids talk about afterward, where you’re inside the space with the animals rather than looking at them from behind glass. Give it most of a day rather than squeezing it into an afternoon.

Buy tickets online in advance. They’re cheaper than at the gate and it saves you the queue.

18. Explore Covent Garden

Covent Garden was London’s fruit and vegetable market for around 300 years before becoming the area it is today. The original glass-roofed market building is still there, with the Apple Market stalls inside and shops and restaurants around it. The whole area is pedestrianized, which is especially nice when you’re exploring with kids and don’t have to worry about traffic.

There are street performers in the piazza throughout most of the day. They audition for their spots, so there are usually some really good acts, and the kids can easily spend half an hour watching a show. You’ll also often find classical musicians playing in the lower courtyard while people eat.

The London Transport Museum is here too. Kids can climb on old buses, trams and Tube carriages, follow a stamp trail through the galleries, and try the Tube train simulator. Adult tickets are valid for a whole year and children go free, so it can be a good option if you’re looking for something to do with kids in central London.

Covent Garden is about a 10-minute walk from Trafalgar Square, so it’s easy to add to a day exploring Westminster.

If it starts raining, this is where to go. The market building is covered, the Transport Museum is indoors, and you can get an entire afternoon out of the two without going back out into it.

19. See Platform 9¾ and the Harry Potter Studio Tour

If you have a Harry Potter fan in the family, there are two versions of this and they’re very different commitments.

Platform 9¾ at King’s Cross

This is the quick one. There’s a luggage trolley set into the wall at King’s Cross station, halfway through, with a staff member handing out scarves and helping with the photo. It’s free, it takes about fifteen minutes including the queue, and there’s a shop next to it. If you’re passing through the station anyway, it’s an easy win.

Warner Bros Studio Tour

This is the full version, and it’s where the films were actually made. The sets are still standing, including the Great Hall and Diagon Alley, and you walk through them. It’s outside London, it takes most of a day including the travel, and tickets sell out weeks ahead.

If you have a child who has read the books, this is the kind of thing you build a trip around rather than fit into one. Book the studio tour before you book anything else, including your flights if you can.

20. Take a Day Trip to Richmond

Richmond is about twenty minutes from central London by train, but it feels like a different place entirely, more like a village on the Thames than part of the city. There’s a huge deer park with actual wild deer, a riverside to walk along, and a much slower pace than you’ll find in central London.

If anyone in your family watches Ted Lasso, Richmond will be especially fun to visit. Many parts of the show were filmed here, including the pub that appears as the Crown & Anchor. The real pub, The Prince’s Head, is right on Richmond Green and you can actually go inside.

21. Spend a Day at Kew Gardens

Kew is a short hop from Richmond, so you could pair the two if you had a long day, though each is comfortably a day on its own. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site and it’s enormous, with glasshouses full of plants you won’t see anywhere else.

For kids the draws are the Treetop Walkway, which puts you up at canopy height above the trees, and the Children’s Garden, which is one of the biggest play spaces in London. It is truly massive, and your kids could easily spend the entire day there. Each section has different things to do and a new type of play apparatus.

22. Take the Boat to Greenwich

Greenwich is the one I’d do if you want a day that feels different from central London, and getting there is half the fun because you can take the river boat all the way down instead of the Tube. The Cutty Sark is a real tea clipper you can walk underneath, which is a strange and brilliant thing to see from below.

Once in Greenwich, the National Maritime Museum is free and has plenty for children. Up the hill in Greenwich Park, the Royal Observatory lets kids stand on the Prime Meridian with a foot in each hemisphere, and the view back toward the city from the top of the park is beautiful.

When to Visit London With Kids

London is great all year, and the free museums mean a rainy or cold trip (as London often is) is never a wasted one. But the seasons are different enough to be worth thinking about when you’re planning the best things to do in London with your family.

Spring

April through June is the best window for a family trip. The days are long, the parks are at their best, and the weather is as good as London gets. Prices haven’t climbed to summer levels yet and the crowds are manageable.

Summer

July and August are the warmest and by far the busiest. Attractions sell out, hotel prices climb, and the museums are packed. Heat is also a real consideration now in a way it wasn’t ten years ago, and most of London has no air conditioning, which catches American families off guard. Book everything ahead and use the free museums as your cooling break in the middle of the day, though check first which ones are actually air conditioned. Keep in mind that London AC doesn’t get as cold as American AC; you’re looking at a low of 74℉ with the AC as low as it goes.

Fall

September and October are underrated. It’s still mild, the city gets noticeably quieter once British schools go back, and hotel prices drop. If your kids aren’t in school yet or you have a fall break, this is probably the best value trip of the year. And if you happen to be there in October, you’ll catch all the Halloween decorations around the city.

Winter

November through March means short days and a lot of grey, but the free museums matter more than ever and the city does Christmas seriously from early November. Final Thoughts

If you’re working out the best things to do in London with kids, the single thing that will improve your trip most is grouping by area. London is big enough that you don’t want to spend most of your day going between places instead of enjoying them.

A simple structure that works for us when we’re picking things to do in London with kids: one big attraction, one museum, one park, and one food stop. Repeat that each day and you’ll see the city without anyone melting down halfway through the afternoon.

Christmas in London is a great option for a family trip over the holidays. The season runs about seven weeks, so you’re not forced into the expensive dates, and a lot of the best parts cost nothing. Ice rinks in courtyards, markets along the river, and lights on every main shopping street.

There’s one thing you need to know before you book, and it’s the part most guides leave out. London closes on Christmas Day. Not partially. The Underground does not run, the buses do not run, most attractions are shut, and so are most restaurants. If Christmas Day is in the middle of your trip, you need to plan for it.

Christmas in Europe has been on my travel list for a while, and London keeps coming up every time I look into a holiday trip. I’ve spent a lot of time researching what the city is like at Christmas, so I pulled together this guide with this year’s dates and prices, plus what needs booking ahead.

When to Go and What Is Open

Most of the big events for Christmas in London run from early or mid November to early January, so you have a long window.

Here are the 2026 season dates.

• Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park runs November 19, 2026 to January 3, 2027.
• Christmas at Kew runs November 13, 2026 to January 3, 2027.
• The ice rink at Somerset House opens November 11, 2026 and runs to January 10, 2027.
• The lights on the main shopping streets go up in early November and stay into January.

That means you don’t have to travel the week before Christmas to get the full experience of Christmas in London. Late November and early December give you the same lights and the same markets with smaller crowds and cheaper flights and hotels. If your kids aren’t in school yet, or you can pull them out for a few days, this is the better trip.

The last two weekends before Christmas are the busiest of the year. Everything is bookable and everything sells out.

What Christmas Day Actually Looks Like in London

This is the one part of Christmas in London that catches people out, so plan around it.

On December 25 there is no Underground, no bus service and no trains. Not a reduced schedule. Nothing. It’s been this way for decades, but check the TfL website before you travel in case anything changes. Most museums, shops and attractions are closed, and so are most restaurants. Winter Wonderland is closed. The ice rinks are closed.

What’s open is your hotel, taxis and rideshares at high prices, and your feet. A lot of hotels do a Christmas lunch, and they book up months ahead, so if you want one you need to reserve it when you book the room.

The upside is that London on Christmas morning is empty in a way it never is otherwise. You can walk down the middle of streets that are normally impossible. Families who plan for it end up liking that day. Families who assumed they’d go to a museum do not.

Boxing Day on December 26 is the opposite. The sales start, the shops are packed, transport runs a limited service and most attractions reopen. If you only have one day for shopping, this isn’t it.

The simplest fix is to book a hotel within walking distance of somewhere you want to be on Christmas Day, and to accept that day as a slow one.

The Christmas Lights

The lights are the best part of Christmas in London, and they’re completely free.

Oxford Street and Regent Street switch on in early November and run into January. Regent Street does the large angel installations that arch over the road, and they’re the ones people photograph. Carnaby Street does something different every year and it’s usually the most fun of the three.

Covent Garden puts up an enormous tree and hangs giant baubles through the market building. Seven Dials, just north of Covent Garden, is worth the five-minute walk.

The tree in Trafalgar Square has been a gift from Norway every year since 1947, as thanks for British support during the Second World War. It goes up in early December. It’s a simple tree compared to the ones in the shopping streets, and the story behind it is the reason to go and see it.

The department store windows are the other free thing worth doing. Fortnum and Mason, Liberty and Selfridges all do proper displays, and they’re within walking distance of each other.

Go after dark, which in December means from about four in the afternoon.

London Christmas Markets

London Christmas markets have their own character. They’re smaller than the ones in Germany, France and Austria, and they’re spread through the city rather than filling one big square, which means you come across them while you’re doing other things. That suits a family trip. You get an hour of lights and hot chocolate on your way somewhere else instead of building a whole day around it.

Most of them open in early to mid November and run until just after Christmas or into the first week of January. Nearly all of them close on Christmas Day. They’re free to walk through, so you can see several in an evening and only spend money if you want to.

Winter Wonderland Market

The largest Christmas market in London is inside Winter Wonderland, along with the rides, the ice rink and everything else. It’s the only one on this list you pay to enter, and it’s big enough that it gets its own section further down.

Southbank Centre Winter Market

The Southbank Centre Winter Market runs along the Queen’s Walk beside the Thames, between the London Eye and Waterloo Bridge, and it’s a line of alpine chalets with lights above them and the river on one side. The walkway is flat and wide the whole way, so there’s room for kids to move and no crowding into a narrow lane.

It leans more toward food than gifts, which is a plus with children. Expect hot chocolate, toasted marshmallows, cheese toasties and mulled wine for the adults. Go after dark so you get the lights reflecting on the water.

Winter by the River

This one is at London Bridge City, on the south side of the river between London Bridge and Tower Bridge, near HMS Belfast. The setting is the reason to go. You’re looking straight across at Tower Bridge and the Tower of London with everything lit up.

It’s smaller and calmer than Southbank, with wooden cabins selling gifts and food from local makers. If you’re already doing the Tower of London that day, this is the natural place to end up in the evening.

Christmas in Leicester Square

Leicester Square gets a market with stalls, food and live performances, and there’s usually a rides area alongside it. It’s in the middle of the West End, so it works well before or after a show, and it’s a short walk from Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden.

This is the busiest and loudest of them. With younger kids, go earlier in the day rather than in the evening.

Covent Garden

Covent Garden is less a market than the whole area dressed for Christmas. There are stalls through the market building, an enormous tree in the piazza, and giant baubles hanging from the roof. The street performers keep going all through December.

It’s free, it’s covered, and it’s a great place to be when it starts raining.

Trafalgar Square

The market here is small, but it sits next to the Norwegian tree and there are carol singers most evenings in December. It costs nothing, the National Gallery is right there and free if you need to warm up, and it works as a stop rather than a destination.

Spitalfields and Borough Market

Both are permanent markets that decorate for Christmas rather than pop-up Christmas markets. Borough is the better one with kids because it’s all food and everything is sampleable. Spitalfields is more about gifts from independent makers.

If Christmas markets are the whole reason for your trip, Germany and Austria go deeper, and I’ve written about the best Christmas markets in Europe. But London gives you markets plus everything else the city does in December, which is a good trade with kids.

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

Winter Wonderland is the biggest single event of Christmas in London and the one your kids will ask about. It fills a large section of Hyde Park with a fairground, a Christmas market, an ice rink and more than 100 rides and attractions. It runs on the dates listed above and is closed on Christmas Day.

You need a timed entry ticket booked in advance, and entry is staggered by the hour. Here’s the useful part: Off-Peak time slots cost one pound, and in November most of them fall Monday to Thursday. Look for the green slots when you book. It’s by far the cheapest way in, and weekday afternoons in November are also the quietest it gets all season.

Entry doesn’t include the rides. You pay for those separately or buy one of the ride passes, and with kids the costs add up quickly. Work out your budget before you walk in, because everything inside is designed to be tempting.

The last two weekends before Christmas are the busiest of the whole run. If those are your only dates, book the earliest entry slot you can get.

Christmas at Kew

Christmas at Kew is a light trail through Kew Gardens after dark. The 2026 dates are listed above.

Tickets start at £29.50 for adults and £20 for children, while children under four go free. Entry slots start at 4:20pm, and the gardens close at 10pm, except on Christmas Eve, when they close at 9pm. Advance booking is essential.

It’s an outdoor walking trail in December, so dress everyone properly. And, as always when visiting London, remember to bring umbrellas and waterproof clothing.

Kew is in southwest London, close to Richmond, so it pairs well if you’re already heading that way. I have a full guide to spending a day in Richmond with kids.

Ice Skating

There are outdoor rinks all over London in December and they’re one of the easier things to do with kids.

• Somerset House is the one people picture, in a courtyard with a tall tree in the middle of it. Sessions are about forty-five minutes and they sell out, so book ahead.
• Hampton Court Palace has a rink set in front of the palace, which is the prettiest setting of the lot and worth the trip out if you’re going to Kew or Richmond anyway.
• Winter Wonderland has the largest outdoor rink in the country, though you need a Winter Wonderland ticket to reach it.
• Leicester Square has one right in the middle of everything, which is the easiest to fit into a day you’re already spending in the West End.

Every rink is closed on Christmas Day.

Pantomime

Panto is a very British Christmas tradition that doesn’t really exist in the United States. It’s a comic stage show based on a fairy tale, the audience shouts at the actors, and there’s always a man playing an older woman. Theatres all over London put one on in December.

It’s funny, completely over-the-top, and aimed squarely at children. If you want to experience something during Christmas in London that’s properly British rather than just Christmassy, this is it.

What to Pack

Christmas in London is cold and damp rather than freezing, usually somewhere in the forties Fahrenheit. It rains and it gets dark around four in the afternoon.

Bring waterproof coats rather than heavy ones, warm layers underneath, hats and gloves, and shoes that handle wet pavement. If you’re doing Kew or an ice rink, everyone needs proper warm layers because you’re outdoors for hours after dark.

Most indoor places are heated, so layers you can take off matter more than one thick coat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Christmas in London worth it?

Yes, particularly if you go in late November or the first half of December. The lights, the markets and the ice rinks are all up, the crowds are smaller and the prices are lower than the week before Christmas.

What is open in London on Christmas Day?

Very little. There is no Underground, no bus service and no train service on December 25. Most attractions, shops and restaurants are closed. Many hotels serve Christmas lunch but book up months in advance. Taxis and rideshares run at higher prices.

When do the Christmas lights go up in London?

The main displays on Oxford Street and Regent Street switch on in early November and stay up into January. The Trafalgar Square tree goes up in early December.

When do the Christmas markets start in London?

How many days do you need in London at Christmas?

Four or five works well. That gives you two days for the regular London sights, one evening for the lights, and one for Kew or Winter Wonderland. If Christmas Day falls in the middle, add a day.

Do Americans need anything to enter the UK besides a passport?

Yes. US citizens now need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to visit the UK, and that includes babies and kids. It costs £20 per person and you apply through the official UK ETA app or on the UK government website. It usually takes a few minutes, but give yourself at least three working days before your flight in case yours needs extra review. Your ETA is linked to the passport you apply with and lasts two years or until that passport expires, so if you renew anyone’s passport before the trip, apply with the new one. Only use the official app or gov.uk, since other websites charge a lot more for the same thing.

Final Thoughts

Christmas in London is an easy trip to like. So much of it is free, the season runs for seven weeks so you’re not locked into the expensive dates, and the whole city takes it seriously.

Plan around Christmas Day, book Kew and the ice rinks before you go, and go in late November or early December if you can choose.   London With Kids: The Perfect 3 Day Itinerary

  London is one of the best cities for an international family trip, and for good reason. Some of the city’s best museums are completely free, kids under 11 ride buses and the Underground for free with a paying adult, and there’s always a park or playground nearby when everyone needs a break. With three days in London, you can see many of the city’s biggest sights, mix in plenty of kid-friendly fun, and still keep the pace manageable for the whole family.

  This London with kids itinerary is keeps each day in a single part of the city, so you’re not moving across the city in one day, which can be daunting: London is huge. Day one covers Westminster and the River Thames, day two is the museum district and Hyde Park, and day three is the Tower and the east side. If you have more time, I’ve added some of my favorite additional day trips to round out a 4- or 5-day stay across the pond.

For years, visiting a Christmas market in Europe has been on my bucket list. It is a magical experience I’ve always wanted to have. There’s just something about twinkling lights, the scent of roasted chestnuts, and rows of charming wooden stalls selling festive treats and handmade crafts that feels like stepping into a fairytale. Now that my kids are a little older, I finally feel ready to make this dream a reality and explore the best Christmas markets in Europe as a family. We’re currently planning it for the holiday season in 2027, and now is the time to start planning it with how competitive and pricey flights and hotels can be for this popular tourist season.

To make the most of this long-awaited trip, I’ve been doing plenty of research to uncover which Christmas markets are not only beautiful but also family-friendly. From meeting Santa to enjoying kid-approved activities like carousel rides and cookie decorating, there are so many incredible options to choose from. The Christmas markets of Europe have something for every family. Here’s what I’ve discovered; let’s dive in!

Nuremberg Christmas Market (Germany)

Nuremberg is home to one of the most famous Christmas markets in the world, and it’s incredibly family-friendly. This city has been hosting its Christmas market for 400 years. Children will love the dedicated Kinderweihnacht (Children’s Christmas) section, complete with a carousel, a mini Ferris wheel, and a bakery where they can make their own gingerbread cookies. The market is steeped in tradition, and its charming wooden stalls sell everything from handcrafted ornaments to festive toys.

Location: The Christmas Market for Children in Nuremberg (Kinderweihnacht) is set up at Hans-Sachs-Platz.

Start Date: Typically starts around November 24

End Date: The market closes on December 24, so plan your visit before then.

• Visit on weekdays and arrive early to avoid crowds, dress warmly, and plan breaks at the Sternenhaus to rest while enjoying a show. The Sternenhaus is a popular family-oriented cultural venue in Nuremberg, it is next to the Christmas Market and offers a magical cultural program for children.
• Bring a reusable cup for hot chocolate refills to save money and reduce waste.

Vienna Christmas Markets (Austria)

Vienna’s Christmas markets are renowned for their charm and festive atmosphere. From rides and open play spaces to delicious treats, each market offers unique activities that make the holiday season magical for kids. Here are the best Vienna Christmas markets for families:

Karlsplatz Christmas Market

The Karlsplatz market stands out as one of the most family-oriented in Vienna.

Kid-Friendly Highlights:

• Children’s carousel
• A few farm animals like sheep in pens
• A straw-floor play area where kids can run and have fun
• Food stalls offering oversized pretzels, roasted almonds, and chocolate-covered treats

Rathausplatz Christkindlmarkt

Vienna Christmas Markets General Information

Start Date: Mid to late November, usually around November 17.

End Date: The main markets close on December 26, but some transition into New Year’s markets, staying open until early January.

Opening Hours: ​​Standard opening times are 10 am to 10 pm, but the market closes at 6:30 pm on December 24.

Pro Tips:

• Keep kids happy with chocolate-covered pretzels, roasted almonds, or chocolate-dipped strawberries available at most markets.
• Eat first, then take advantage of activities like ice skating, where kids can burn off energy.
• Don’t miss the free entertainment, like choirs, a cappella groups, and brass ensembles.
• Go earlier in the day or on weekdays to avoid crowds and allow more time to enjoy the kid-friendly activities.

Rovaniemi Santa Claus Village (Finland)

This is technically not a christmas market, but it is the ultimate Christmas experience and one that’s at the top of my bucket list. Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland, is known as the official home of Santa Claus. Highlights include:

• Meeting Santa in his office
• Crossing the Arctic Circle
• Snowy landscapes and the chance to send postcards from Santa’s Post Office

Start Date: Santa Claus Village is open year-round. It opens every day, including Christmas Day.

Pro Tip: Rovaniemi can be pricey, so try to book accommodations in advance and look for package deals.

Christmas in Tivoli Gardens (Denmark)

Tivoli Gardens is a magical place year-round, but during Christmas, it transforms into a winter wonderland. The market features Scandinavian-style stalls, snow-dusted decorations, and themed rides. Kids will adore meeting Santa and exploring the enchanting light displays. There are more than 30 rides for families to enjoy. Plus, the family-friendly eateries ensure everyone can enjoy themselves, without worrying about picky eaters.

• Plan for a weekday afternoon to enjoy both daylight and illuminated displays. You can check sunrise and sunset hours here, it is usually around 3:30 pm.
• Dress warmly for Copenhagen’s winter chill and indulge in Danish treats like:
  • Æbleskiver: small, round, pancake-like balls typically cooked in a special pan. They are fluffy and slightly crispy on the outside and are served warm with powdered sugar, jam or sometimes a dollop of whipped cream
  • Gløgg: the Scandinavian version of mulled wine, for kids there is a non-alcoholic version made with fruit juice.

Christmas Markets in Alsace (France)

Alsace, nestled in northeastern France, transforms into a magical wonderland during the Christmas season. This charming region, already known for its picturesque villages and half-timbered houses, reaches its peak splendor as the holidays approach. Streets are adorned with twinkling lights and garlands, creating an atmosphere straight out of a storybook. Alsace is beautiful year-round, and it’s known to have some of the Best Christmas Markets in Europe.

When exploring the towns of Alsace, choosing a central base is the best way to make the most of your trip. Staying in one town and venturing out to others allows you to experience the region’s charm without the hassle of constantly packing and unpacking. One of the most recommended places to stay is Colmar, a city with a central location and excellent transportation options to nearby villages.

However, as this time of year is particularly busy, it’s often advised to have your own car to travel between the different towns. This way, you can avoid the challenges of crowded public transportation, especially when traveling with kids. You can book your car here.

Colmar

Colmar hosts six distinct Christmas markets:

1. Place des Dominicains
2. Place de l’Ancienne Douane
3. Place Jeanne d’Arc
4. Le Marché des Noël des Enfants à la Petit Venise (this is the most kids-friendly market)
5. Le Marché intérieur du Koïfhus (this market is inside, making it an ideal stop if it’s freezing)
6. Le Marché gourmand

Bonus: Place Rapp is a square that usually add some stalls.

Eguisheim

This small, circular village is ideal for families looking for a quieter experience.

Highlights for Kids: The advent calendar at Place du Château opens a new window daily. Street music and occasional performances add to the charm.

Kaysersberg

Voted “Favorite Village of the French” in 2017, Kaysersberg is home to a Christmas market that was named the “Best Christmas Market in France” in 2022. Kaysersberg is a family favorite and offers a range of activities. Plan ahead, though, because this market doesn’t open every day.

Highlights for Kids: Artisan demonstrations and workshops to create Christmas wreaths (must be reserved in advance).

Ribeauvillé

Known for its medieval-themed Christmas market, Ribeauvillé is lively and unique.

Highlights for Kids: Animated performances featuring jugglers, dancers, and musicians bring the market to life.

Strasbourg

Known as the “Capital of Christmas,” Strasbourg offers a wide array of markets across 13 locations.

• Place Broglie: features around 70 stalls offering a variety of items, including holiday decorations, handcrafted leather goods, chocolates, and other artisanal and gastronomic products. This historic market has been held in the same location since 1570, making it one of the oldest and most traditional markets in Alsace.
• Place du Château: Located near the cathedral, it has a carousel and plenty of kid-friendly food options.
• Place Kléber: Home to a 30-meter Christmas tree with light and music shows, a must-see for families.
• Other Christmas markets in Strasbourg: Place de la Cathédrale, Marché de les délices D’Alsace, Place du Marché-Aux-Poissons, Place du Temple Neuf, Place Saint-Thomas, Place Benjamin Zix, Village de l’Avent, Marché Off (Place Grimeissen), Rue Gutenberg and Rue des Hallebardes

Visiting Christmas markets is a popular activity in Europe, and planning ahead can help make your trip more affordable. Timing Is Everything

Visit Christmas Markets early in the day or on weekdays to avoid the crowds. Most open around 10-11 am and remain open until 7-8 pm. This way, you can explore at a leisurely pace and enjoy the activities without long waits, and you can take advantage of more daylight. In some of these locations, the sun will set as early as 3 pm.

Layer Up

Winter in Europe can be freezing, so make sure everyone in the family is dressed in warm layers. Don’t forget hats, gloves, and scarves! Many markets have heated tents or indoor cafes where you can take a break and warm up. Here is a list of some of the winter trip essentials we recommend.

Prepare Your Kids

One of our favorite places to grab snacks in Europe is at a specialty cheese shop. You can have them cut the cheese into slices for the kids, and they often also sell bread and nuts to go along with your snack. The cheeses are always delicious and high-quality.

Plan for Breaks

Exploring a market can be tiring for little legs, so plan breaks to sit down, enjoy a treat, or watch a festive performance. Many markets have seating areas where you can relax and soak up the holiday spirit. Consider bringing a stroller. On our recent trip to Europe, we found this stroller wagon to be a great option as a two seater that can fit through narrow European streets and doorways. Plus, the all-terrain wheels make it perfect for cobblestones and snow.

Set a Budget

Between the delicious treats, handmade gifts, and fun activities, it’s easy to overspend. Decide on a budget beforehand and involve your kids in the decision-making process, teaching them about responsible spending. You can even give them 10€ each and challenge them to get their favorite treats within their budget.

Safety Tips for Visiting Christmas Markets with Kids

Christmas markets are magical, but they can also be very crowded, especially in popular places like Nuremberg, Vienna, and Strasbourg. Kids get excited, there is so much to look at, and it’s easy for them to wander off or feel overwhelmed. With a bit of planning, you can enjoy the lights, treats, and activities while keeping everyone safe and comfortable.

1. Keep Kids Close and Easy to Spot

Christmas markets get packed as the day goes on, so keeping young children close is important. ID bracelets and anti‑lost wrist links can help give you peace of mind in busy areas. Many parents also use AirTags for extra safety. Make sure they are synced and attached securely in a holder that clips onto clothing or shoes.

2. Dress Kids in Bright Colors

Bright jackets and hats make it much easier to spot your kids in a crowd. Before heading out each day, take a quick photo of your child’s outfit on your phone. If you get separated, you will have an exact picture to show local staff or police.

3. Set a Simple Meeting Spot

If your child is old enough to understand, choose a clear meeting point such as the big Christmas tree, a fountain, or the entrance arch. Remind them that if they cannot find you, they should stay in that spot and wait. Show them what local security or police look like, since many Christmas markets have officers walking around.

4. Use Identification Bands

Child ID bracelets or temporary tattoos with your phone number are helpful when traveling. They take only seconds to apply and make it easy for someone to contact you quickly if needed. We use these often on busy travel days, and they work well for theme parks and airports too.

And while most families who do visit are busy planning their Lisbon itinerary or counting down the days to the Algarve beaches, northern Portugal is sitting up there quietly being spectacular. We’re talking cobblestoned riverfront cities, wild national parks where horses roam free, terraced vineyards dropping straight into a UNESCO-listed river valley, and some of the warmest hospitality in all of Europe. Oh, and the food? Amazing!

If you’re planning a family trip to Portugal, you need to consider heading north, with this itinerary as your guide. Three days, three very different experiences: Porto with kids, the Douro Valley with kids, and Peneda-Gerês National Park, all designed for families. Let’s go.

How to Get to Northern Portugal

Most international flights land in Lisbon (LIS). It’s the main hub and where most transatlantic routes touch down. The good news is that getting to northern Portugal from Lisbon is easy. Here’s how each option stacks up for families.

Fly Direct into Porto (OPO) if You Can

Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport in Porto is the gateway to northern Portugal and more routes are serving it directly every year, including some transatlantic options. If you can find a good route, landing in Porto means you skip the Lisbon leg entirely and arrive exactly where you need to be.

Train from Lisbon

The Alfa Pendular express train covers Lisbon to Porto in under 3 hours. Seats are assigned, the ride is smooth, kids can move around, and the Portuguese countryside rolling past the window is absolutely beautiful. You can book up to 60 days in advance. Promo fares start around €10 one way, regular tickets run €25–35. You’ll arrive at Campanhã station; a quick 4-minute connecting train (included in your ticket) drops you at São Bento in the heart of the city.

Bus from Lisbon

Rede Expressos and FlixBus both run Lisbon to Porto routes throughout the day, with tickets from around €8–20. The journey takes about 3.5 hours. It’s comfortable enough, but seats are more cramped than on the train, so it’s worth evaluating whether this is a good option with little ones who need room to move.

Car: The Most Flexible Option for Families

Here’s the honest truth: if you’re doing Porto, Gerês, AND the Douro Valley (which this itinerary does), you will need a car for at least part of the trip. Peneda-Gerês National Park has no practical public transit access, and the Douro Valley is best explored slowly with the freedom to stop every five minutes because the views demand it. The drive from Lisbon to Porto is about 3 hours on the A1 motorway with roughly €22 in tolls each way.

PRO TIP: Take the train from Lisbon to Porto and see the city on foot for Day 1, then pick up a rental car on Day 2 when you head out to the park and valley. You skip the Porto parking headaches entirely and still have full freedom a car brings when you need it.

Best Time to Visit Northern Portugal with Kids

Northern Portugal has good travel windows across most of the year, but the timing matters depending on what you want to do, especially if river beaches in Gerês are on the list.

May–June is the sweet spot for families. Temperatures sit around 68–77°F, there’s plenty of sunshine, and the crowds are noticeably lighter than peak summer. The Douro Valley is green and lush, Gerês is beautiful, and you’re not competing with July and August prices. June also brings Porto’s famous Festa de São João on June 23rd, a huge street festival that older kids will love.

July–August is peak season. Warm and sunny, great for the river beaches in Gerês, but the Douro Valley can get very hot: temperatures in the valley easily reach 100°F in summer, which is tough with little ones. Expect higher prices and more crowds everywhere.

September–October is harvest season in the Douro, and it’s a special time to visit. Wineries host harvest events, special dinners, and tastings throughout the season, and fall colors make trails especially scenic. September still feels like summer in Porto. October cools down and gets quieter: good for prices, but you won’t be sunbathing or swimming in the rivers.

November–March is rainy and cool in Porto and Gerês. Porto is one of the wettest cities in southern Europe, with most of the rain falling in winter months. These months are not as ideal for an outdoor-heavy itinerary like this one.

Bottom line for families: Aim for May–June or September. You get good weather, manageable crowds, and the Douro at its best.

Day 1 – Things to Do in Porto With Kids

If northern Portugal has a front door, Porto is it. This city is genuinely one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, a place where every cobblestoned alley leads to something worth photographing, every viewpoint makes you stop mid-sentence, and every café smells like espresso and warm pastry. The best part is the pace is relaxed, and the Portuguese adore children, so you’ll have an easy time here with kids.

Morning: Palácio de Cristal Gardens & the Ribeira Waterfront

Start your Porto morning at the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal: a hilltop park with sweeping views over the Douro and peacocks that roam completely free. Your kids will absolutely lose their mind in the best possible way. Let them run, let them chase (gently!), take approximately 400 photos.

From there, make your way down to the Ribeira waterfront. This is Porto’s most iconic stretch: colorful houses stacked up the steep hillside, the Douro sparkling below, traditional rabelo boats bobbing in the water, and the Dom Luís I Bridge arching overhead. It’s exactly as gorgeous as every photo you’ve ever seen, and it’s even better in person.

Afternoon: Cross the Bridge & Take to the River

Walk across the Dom Luís I Bridge on foot. The upper deck gives you stunning views of both Porto and the Vila Nova de Gaia side of the river. Kids will love “being up there “climbing” the bidge; you’ll love the views. Cross over into Gaia and wander the port wine lodges lining the riverbank. The barrel-filled cellars are interesting to walk through, and older kids will find the history of how port wine is made more engaging than they expect.

Don’t miss: Book a Six Bridges Cruise on the Douro, about an hour on the water with views of the entire city. Kids love being on a boat and parents love that everyone is sitting down for a full hour.

Dinner in the Ribeira

The Ribeira neighborhood is full of great dinner spots. Order a francesinha: Porto’s legendary sandwich loaded with meat, melted cheese, and a deeply savory beer-and-tomato sauce that is almost mandatory to eat. Portuguese restaurants are relaxed and child-friendly.

Tips From a Parent: Porto’s cobblestones and hills are real. Bring a baby carrier instead of a stroller for hilly sections, you’ll be grateful by lunchtime. Make sure everyone wears sturdy walking shoes.

Day 2 – Northern Portugal’s Wild Side: Peneda-Gerês National Park

About 90 minutes from Porto, Peneda-Gerês is Portugal’s only national park, and one of the most stunning corners of the entire Iberian Peninsula. Ancient oak forests, granite mountain villages, crystal-clear river beaches, waterfalls, and wildlife roaming free. For families, it is pure, unfiltered magic. Pick up your rental car this morning before leaving the city.

Morning: Forest Walks & Mountain River Beaches

Head to the Mata da Albergaria area for an easy, well-marked walk through one of the oldest surviving oak forests in Portugal. The paths are manageable for little legs and the light through the ancient trees is something else entirely. If you’re visiting between May and October, the praias fluviais aka river beaches, are the main event. Crystal-clear mountain water, shallow spots perfect for little swimmers, and room for bigger kids to splash around for hours. Pack swimsuits no matter what the forecast says.

Afternoon: Ancient Villages & Wild Horses

Make your way to Soajo or Lindoso, two of the most magical villages in the park, both famous for their espigueiros, ancient stone grain stores raised on stilts that look like something out of a fairytale.

Eyes on the hills: The Garrano, a breed of wild pony native to Gerês, roams freely through the mountains. Spotting a herd is a travel moment that stops everyone in their tracks. Make it a game with the kids: whoever sees one first gets to choose dessert!

If you can, stay overnight near Gerês rather than driving back to Porto. Waking up in the mountains is worth it, and it sets you up perfectly for Day 3.

Day 3 – Douro Valley With Kids: Where to Go & Where to Stay

Here’s something nobody tells you about the Douro Valley: it’s not just for wine lovers. Yes, the terraced vineyards are jaw-dropping. Yes, the river views are the kind that make you stop mid-sentence. But the Douro Valley with kids is wildly underrated, and incredibly fun to navigate by car, too.

Morning: The N222 Scenic Drive

Route yourself along the N222, regularly listed among the most beautiful roads in the world, and for once that is not an exaggeration. Wind along the river, pull over constantly (you will want to), and stop at a quinta (wine estate) along the way. Many offer family-friendly experiences: wine tastings for the adults, grape juice and a wander through the vineyards for the kids.

Where to Stay: Six Senses Douro Valley

If your budget allows for one splurge on this trip, make it Six Senses Douro Valley. Set in a beautifully restored 19th-century manor house high on a hill in Samodães, overlooking terraced vineyards and the river below, this place is one of the most stunning hotels in all of Portugal, and it’s family-friendly.

The property has 10 acres of woodland with trails for exploring, an organic garden to wander through. Activities include kayaking, mountain biking, tree climbing, stand-up paddleboarding, cycling tours, and river boat trips. There’s no formal kids’ club, but there’s an activity hut stocked with toys and games for all ages, plus babysitting on request.

Before Heading Home: Douro Historic Train

If your schedule allows, squeeze in the historic train ride between Pinhão and Régua before heading back to Porto. It’s under an hour, the valley views from the windows are extraordinary. Its a low effort, very high reward way to close out the trip.

Practical Tips for Families in Northern Portugal

• Rent a car. There’s no other way to reach Gerês or explore the Douro Valley without one. Book car seats in advance from your rental company: don’t assume they’ll be available at the desk. Or better yet, travel with your own.
• Pack layers. Northern Portugal, especially Gerês, can be cool and misty even in summer. Light rain jackets are your best friend.
• The Portuguese are amazing with children. Seriously. Strangers will come over to say hello to your kids in restaurants, shop owners will offer them sweets. It makes family travel feel so easy and warm.
• Build in downtime. Especially for little kids. Porto lends itself beautifully to a slow lunch and a mid-afternoon rest before hitting the next thing. Don’t try to rush it.
• Pastéis de nata are mandatory. Warm, flaky, custard-filled, and available everywhere. Your kids will be obsessed by day two.
• Best time to visit: Late spring (May–June) and early fall (September–October) are ideal. Summer is warmer, and the river beaches are at their best, but also busier. The park and valley are stunning year-round.

Final Thoughts

Northern Portugal is so underrated, and you will instantly fall in love with this area. Porto is easy to navigate, endlessly beautiful, and great with kids of any age. Gerês gives out-of-this world nature, along with a break from the city. And the Douro Valley is a stunning, low-key way to wrap up a weekend that somehow manages to fit in a city, a national park, and a wine region.

Three days is a solid introduction, but northern Portugal also fits great into a longer Portugal trip. If you have 10 to 15 days, you can pair this itinerary with Lisbon, a day trip to Sintra, Belém, and a few days in the Algarve, and you’ve got one of the best family trips Europe has to offer.

If you have watched even one episode of Ted Lasso, you already know Richmond. The corner pub. The green with the soccer goals. That little row of shops that looks like somebody painted it for a postcard.

Maybe you didn’t realize that Richmond is real part of London, twenty minutes from central London by train, and there is so much more to it than the filming locations. We visited Richmond during a trip to London and Copenhagen, it ended up being one of my favorite days of the whole trip. We even had the “should we move here” moment, just like Ted Lasso.

Now that Ted Lasso is back, everyone is asking about Richmond again. So I’ve gathered all the best things to do in Richmond London, from the show’s filming spots to the deer in Richmond Park, plus every way to get there.

How to Get to Richmond From London

Richmond sits in Travelcard Zone 4, and your Oyster card or contactless payment works on everything below except the boat. You have more options than most people realize.

By Train From Waterloo, the Fastest Option

South Western Railway runs direct from London Waterloo to Richmond in about twenty minutes, with trains roughly every ten minutes. If your day is tight, take this one.

By Underground

This is the one we took. Richmond is the western end of the District line, so if you are already on it there are no changes at all. It takes closer to forty minutes from central London, but it is simple, and you get to watch the city thin out into leafy suburbs on the way.

By London Overground

Richmond is also the western terminus of the Mildmay line. If you are staying in north or east London, this saves you doubling back through the middle of the city.

By Bus

Slower than everything else, but perfectly doable if you are already out in west or southwest London. Several routes stop right in the town center.

By Boat

This is the fun one! Thames River Boats sails from Westminster Pier all the way up to Richmond Landing Stage, and the trip takes two to two and a half hours depending on the tide. It is a cruise, not a commute.

If you want to go by boat, take the boat one direction and the train back, so you are not spending your entire day on the water. The service is seasonal and the timetable shifts with the tides, so check their sailings before you build a day around it.

Ted Lasso’s Richmond: The Filming Locations You Can Actually Visit

Almost every exterior you recognize from the show sits within a ten minute walk of Richmond station, which makes this the easiest filming location tour in London. You do not need a car, a guide, or a plan. Just mark the spots on a map, and walk between each one.

One thing worth knowing before you go. All the interiors were built at West London Film Studios. The inside of the pub and the inside of Ted’s flat do not exist in Richmond. Only the exteriors are real.

The Ted Lasso Pub

The Crown and Anchor is really The Prince’s Head, at 28 The Green, on the corner where Golden Court and Paved Court meet. It is a proper old pub, over three hundred years old, and it has leaned all the way into its fame with AFC Richmond memorabilia inside.

You will spot the Fuller’s lettering across the front long before you spot the name. There are picnic benches out on the paving, and on a sunny day every one of them is taken. Don’t forget to grab a photo out front.

The Ted Lasso Bench

This one confuses people, because you will see it described online as a riverside bench. It is not.

The bench where Ted and Coach Beard have all their big conversations sits on the edge of Richmond Green, right beside two red phone boxes, directly across the road from the pub. Stand outside The Prince’s Head, look across, and you will spot it straight away.

Paved Court and Ted’s Front Door

Paved Court is the narrow pedestrian lane running off The Green, and it is where Ted walks out his front door every morning. In the show his address is nine and a half. In real life the door is 11a. It’s a functioning apartment with people living inside, so feel free to snap a picture outside, but don’t knock.

Richmond Green

The Green is the wide open space the pub and Paved Court both sit on, and it turns up constantly in the show, from pickup soccer games, football as everyone there calls it, to Roy coaching Phoebe’s team. In real life it is exactly what it looks like, a big flat lawn where people play cricket in summer and let their kids run loose.

The Ted Lasso Store

There is an official store at 4 Paved Court, a few steps from the pub, selling jerseys, scarves and all “BELIEVE” merchandise.

The walls are covered in AFC Richmond print, there is a red phone booth in the back, and the club crest painted right into the floor. My older son picked up a soccer ball off the rack and would not put it down. That photo is one of my favorites from the entire trip.

Where Is the AFC Richmond Stadium?

The AFC Richmond Stadium is not actually in Richmond, and Nelson Road does not exist.

The stadium scenes were filmed at Selhurst Park in south London, the real home of Crystal Palace F.C., which is about an hour away on the other side of the city. If you want to see it, that is a separate trip, and Crystal Palace F.C. does run stadium tours if you are committed.

To make a day of it after the Ted Lasso stops, here is everything else that makes Richmond worth the trip.

Brewer’s Lane

A tiny cobbled lane off George Street, lined with independent shops. It takes five minutes to walk end to end and it is one of the prettiest corners of town.

We found a children’s bookshop, and we stopped at Danieli for coffee and gelato. The gelato counter has around twenty flavors and the hot chocolate menu alone includes seven options.

The Thames Riverside Walk

From the town center you drop down to the river and the whole mood changes. Boats, benches, ice cream, people rowing past. The towpath is flat, which matters when you are walking with kids, and there is shade in stretches.

There are rowing boats to rent lined up in bright colors under Richmond Bridge, an ice cream van parked on the promenade, and ducks sunning themselves on the slipway.

The Chimpanzee Sculptures

This one is not in any guidebook, and my boys loved it. There are life-sized bronze chimpanzees scattered around Richmond, part of a conservation art trail called ‘Chimps Are Family‘, and each one has a plaque with the name and age of a real rescued chimp.

We found two of them together down on Richmond Riverside and another sitting on her own up at the top of the hill. The boys climbed all of them.

Terrace Gardens and Bulbous Betty

Climbing up from the river you reach Terrace Gardens, and tucked inside them is a reclining statue of Aphrodite that everyone in Richmond calls Bulbous Betty. Nobody uses her real name. It is a shaded, quiet spot to sit for a while, and a good place to catch your breath partway up the hill.

The Richmond Hill Viewpoint

Keep climbing and you come out at the top of Richmond Hill. The Thames curves away below through a valley of trees. There are meadows in the foreground, boats on the water, and on a clear day the view runs for miles.

The view over the Thames from up there is protected by an Act of Parliament, passed in 1902 specifically to stop anyone building in front of it. Turner painted it. It really is that good.

Richmond Park

Richmond Gate sits right at the top of the hill, so the park is a natural next stop once you have had your fill of the view. You can walk straight in from the terrace.

Richmond Park is the largest of London’s eight Royal Parks at around 2,500 acres, roughly three times the size of Central Park. Around 630 red and fallow deer roam free there, and they have since 1637.

Stop at the map board by the gate before you head in. It marks every toilet, café, and parking lot in the park, which becomes much more useful than it sounds once you are a mile in with kids. You’ll also find illustrated wildlife boards, giving you a preview of the animals that live there.

The deer are why most people come, but remember, they are wild animals, not a petting zoo. The Royal Parks ask visitors to stay at least fifty meters away, and that goes double in autumn during the rut and in spring when the females have calves.

Having said that, the kids absolutely loved seeing the deer!

King Henry’s Mound

Inside Pembroke Lodge Gardens there is a small hill believed to be a Bronze Age burial mound. At the top there is a telescope pointed east through a gap in the trees, and on a clear day you can see the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral in central London ten miles away.

That sightline is legally protected, which means nothing can be built to block it. It is about a fifteen minute walk from Richmond Gate.

Petersham Gate Playground

If you are visiting Richmond with kids, and coming into the park from the Petersham side, this playground is worth knowing about. It sits right at the gate, with swings, climbing frames and a sandpit with a working water pump. There are plenty of benches for parents and public toilets right at the entrance. Shade is limited, so bring hats and sunscreen on a hot day.

Where to Eat in Richmond

We had lunch at the White Cross, a riverside pub at the end of Water Lane. It is a Richmond institution and the location is amazing, right on the Thames with tables spilling out the front.

One thing to know: the garden floods at high tide. Not occasionally, regularly, as in daily. There is a sign on the wall offering to lend you rainboots if you get caughts. Check the tide times if you have your heart set on sitting outside, or lean into it, because honestly, it is part of the fun. It gets busy at weekends, so book ahead if you can.

Our Richmond Day Trip Itinerary

If you want to copy our day, this is how it went.

• Morning: District line into Richmond, then straight to Richmond Green for the Ted Lasso stops. The pub, the bench, Paved Court and the store.
• Then Brewer’s Lane for the shops.
• Down to the river for a walk along the Thames, and the chimpanzee sculptures on the Riverside.
• Midday: lunch at the White Cross.
• Up through Terrace Gardens to say hello to Bulbous Betty.
• On up to the Richmond Hill viewpoint.
• Into Richmond Park, with a stop at Petersham Gate Playground.
• King Henry’s Mound to finish, then back down into town for the ride home.

We ended up being in Richmond from about 10AM to 4PM.

Tips for Visiting Richmond With Kids

• Wear sneakers. Between the hill, the towpath and the park, this is a walking day.
• Go on a weekday if you can. The Green and the riverside get packed at weekends.
• Bring snacks for the park. Once you are inside Richmond Park your only real option is the cafe at Pembroke Lodge.
• Public toilets are available at the station, the playground, and Pembroke Lodge.
• Photograph the map board at the gate. It has every toilet in the park marked on it.
• The playground is a good bribe for the moment the walking starts to wear thin.
• Give yourself the whole day. You could rush Richmond with kids in three hours, but you would miss the point of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Richmond worth visiting if you have never seen Ted Lasso?

Yes. The show is what gets people there, but the hill, the park and the river would justify the trip on their own.

How long do you need in Richmond with kids?

A full day is ideal. If you only have half a day, do the Ted Lasso stops, lunch by the river and Richmond Hill, and leave the park for another time.

Where is the Ted Lasso bench?

On the edge of Richmond Green, next to two red phone boxes, directly across the road from The Prince’s Head pub.

Is Ted Lasso town a real place?

Yes and no. Richmond is a real town in southwest London and most of the exteriors were filmed there. AFC Richmond and its stadium are fictional.

Can you go inside the Ted Lasso pub?

Yes, The Prince’s Head is a working pub and anyone can walk in. Just know the interior scenes were shot on a set, so it will not look like the show inside.

Will you see deer in Richmond Park?

Usually, though there is no guarantee, and they are not always out in the open. Early morning and late afternoon are your best odds. Keep fifty meters back whenever you find them.

Is Richmond Park free?

Yes, it is free and open year round. Parking inside the park is paid.

Final Thoughts

Richmond was the day of our London trip that we all ended up loving. We came for a pub and a bench, and we left having spent the whole day outside, watching deer, climbing a hill and eating lunch by the river. Even if you’re not a Ted Lasso fan, it’s a quintessential little London town that’s worth a stop.

Ireland is a destination that seems to work well at every age and stage of family travel, and this Ireland itinerary proves it. The country is compact enough that you can cover a lot of ground in a week, but every stretch of road feels like it deserves more time. Castles appear constantly, the countryside is quintessentially green and rolling, and the pace tends to be relaxed in a way that makes traveling with kids feel manageable rather than exhausting. Plus, the Irish absolutely love kids and babies, which makes every local encounter feel pleasant and welcomed.

Our Ireland itinerary is built around one week and is focused on the southwest, which is where families will get the most out of their visit. Best Time to Visit Ireland With Kids

Ireland does not have a bad season for visiting with kids, but here is a general breakdown of the seasons:

• May to June (Shoulder season): Long days, mild temperatures, fewer crowds than peak summer. This is a great window for families.
• July to August (Peak summer): The warmest and busiest time. Book accommodation early, especially in Killarney and Galway.
• September (Shoulder season): Still very enjoyable, slightly quieter, and pricing often comes down a bit. September is my personal favorite in Ireland.
• October to March (Off-season): Quieter and cheaper. Good for castle visits and town exploring, but expect more rain and shorter days.

No matter when you go, pack waterproof layers. Ireland’s weather changes quickly, and the chances of at least one rainy day are high no matter the season.

Getting Around Ireland With Kids

A rental car is the best way to see Ireland with kids. Public transport options exist, but the big sights are spread out, and many of the best stops are not on any bus route. If you rent a car, be prepared to drive on the left side of the road, with the steering wheel on the right. The roads outside of cities can be very narrow, so a smaller car is worth choosing even if your group is larger (consider two smaller cars if needed).

Most families fly into Dublin, though Cork and Shannon are also options depending on where your Ireland itinerary starts. If you are doing the ring road through the southwest, Shannon can save you some driving time.

Practical Tips for Ireland With Kids

• Bring coins for parking in town centers. Many lots only accept cash.
• Kids menus at pubs typically include chicken goujons (the Irish version of chicken tenders), fish and chips, and sausages. Most traditional pubs welcome families for lunch and dinner. If you have a baby eating solids or a toddler, ask for a “baby bowl”. which is cooked peas and carrots mixed with mashed potatoes.
• Strollers (my favorite double stroller and single stroller for Europe travel) are manageable in most town centers but can struggle on hiking trails, which get muddy quickly. If you’re going to climb any bell towers, you will need a carrier for little ones.
• Many hotel pools in Ireland require swim caps. It is worth buying them cheaply before you go rather than paying at the front desk.
• Book popular sites like the Cliffs of Moher, the Titanic Experience in Cobh, and any guided experiences in advance, especially in summer.

Where to Stay in Ireland With Kids

If you are doing a 7 days Ireland itinerary and want to explore the southwest, splitting your time between two bases works well. Killarney makes a great first home base for the Ring of Kerry and surrounding adventures. If you want to finish in the east, Kilkenny is a charming stop on the way back toward Dublin.

Dublin

Dublin is a compact city, and most of the main attractions are within walking distance of each other, so staying south of the River Liffey puts you in the best position. The area around St. Stephen’s Green and Trinity College is ideal for most families. It works well because you can get to almost everything on foot without needing a car or a lot of public transit planning.

The Grafton Hotel sits just off St. Stephen’s Green and is a solid central option for families. The family rooms sleep up to six guests with a super-king bed and two sets of bunk beds, plus a separate bathroom and shower room. That configuration works particularly well for families who want everyone in one room without the cost of booking two connecting rooms.

The Mespil Hotel is another well-regarded family option, with family rooms that fit up to four guests and a kids-eat-free policy for children under 12. It sits along the Grand Canal within walking distance of the main attractions.

For something with more of a splurge feel, the Merrion Hotel is a historic property near the government buildings in the heart of Dublin, with a restaurant, afternoon tea, and spa on site. It is a step up in price but a good option if you want a more luxe experience for your nights in the city.

One practical note: you do not need a rental car in Dublin. Walking and the Luas tram system cover most of what you will want to do, and driving in the city center adds stress without much benefit. Pick up your rental car when you are ready to head south toward Killarney.

Killarney

Killarney is the most practical base for families exploring the southwest. The town itself is walkable, has plenty of casual restaurants and pubs, and is right on the edge of Killarney National Park. Most families stay here for two to three nights and use it to drive the Ring of Kerry, explore Muckross, and take day trips into the surrounding area.

The Lake Hotel in Killarney is a solid family option. It sits on the Lower Lake with views of Castlelough Castle ruins on the property grounds. It has family suites, included breakfast, and two onsite restaurants, which makes evenings easy after long driving days. There is also a library area with games and books for kids.

Hotel Killarney is another family-friendly choice. The hotel underwent a major refurbishment in 2024 and offers family suites, a kids club, and a Club Vitae leisure centre with an 18-metre heated indoor pool, toddler pool, jacuzzi, steam room, and sauna. The family suites come in 2- and 3-room configurations, including options for up to 2 adults and 3 children.

Kilkenny

If you want to add a night or two before heading home, Kilkenny is a great stop. The town is medieval, walkable, and genuinely charming with a castle, riverside paths, and easy restaurants. It is about two hours from Killarney and about 1.5 hours from Dublin.

Mount Juliet Estate is a splurge option about 15 minutes outside of Kilkenny town. The grounds are expansive with walking trails, a fairy trail, a kids playground, and a large indoor pool. There are bikes available to borrow. It is a great place to decompress at the end of a trip.

Galway

Galway has a good range of family hotel options, and the main decision is whether you want to be in the city center or just outside it. Staying central makes the day-seven city wander much easier, but a few of the best family-specific hotels sit about 10 to 15 minutes outside town and make up for the location with better facilities.

The Connacht Hotel has been a family staple in Galway for over 50 years and was named Family Hotel of the Year at the Irish Hotel Awards in 2024. It has a 20-meter pool with a separate kids pool, a kids club, family rooms with bunk beds, and a children’s menu with activity packs at dinner. It is on the Dublin Road side of the city, so you will need to drive to get into the center, but the onsite facilities make it a good choice for families.

The Maldron Hotel Oranmore sits about 10 minutes from Galway city and has been rated one of the top family hotels in Ireland by TripAdvisor. It has a dedicated games room for kids called the Crafty Kids Games Room, an onsite playground, a pool, and a kids club that runs in July and August for ages 4 to 12. It works well if you want a quieter base with more room to spread out.

The Galway Bay Hotel sits right on the Salthill Promenade with a kids adventure club that includes activities like cookery, arts and crafts, treasure hunts, and fairy trails. It also has a pool and is walking distance from the Atlantaquaria, Ireland’s largest native aquarium. This is the best option if you want to be right on the water and have easy access to Salthill and the city center.

One Week Ireland Itinerary

Here is how to structure your Ireland itinerary over seven days with kids:

• Day 1: Arrive in Dublin, explore the city
• Day 2: Drive south through Kilkenny, stop in Cork or Cobh, continue to Killarney
• Day 3: Ring of Kerry drive
• Day 4: Killarney area: Muckross House, Torc Waterfall, Kissane Sheep Farm
• Day 5: Dingle Peninsula
• Day 6: Cliffs of Moher, drive to Galway
• Day 7: Explore Galway, head home or back to Dublin

Day 1: Dublin

Use your first day to get your bearings, stretch your legs after the flight, and see the beauty and vibrance of Dublin before the driving portion of the trip begins.

Trinity College is one of the easiest first stops. You can walk the grounds freely, and the Long Room library inside is one of the most impressive rooms in the country. The Book of Kells is on display here as well, though the library tends to be the bigger draw. It is worth booking tickets in advance.

Temple Bar is the neighborhood most people picture when they think of Dublin, and it is worth walking through even if you are not stopping for a drink. The cobblestone streets are lined with pubs, and The Temple Bar itself is covered in flowers and is probably the most photographed building in the city. Go in the morning or early afternoon when the area is calm and easy to walk with with kids. It turns into more of a party scene at night. There are shops and cafes throughout if you want to grab a bite to eat or get souvenirs.

Dublin Castle is a ten minute walk from Temple Bar and an easy next stop. The courtyards and gardens are free to walk through and provides open space for kids to move around. The round Record Tower and the Chapel Royal are the oldest parts of the site and the most interesting to look at. You can also buy tickets for a guided tour of the State Apartments if you want to go inside, though the grounds alone are worth the stop.

Christ Church Cathedral sits just up the hill from the castle and is the oldest building still in use in Dublin. The stone exterior is impressive on its own, and inside there are carved tombs, side chapels, and a medieval crypt that runs the full length of the building. It is a quiet stop after the noise of Temple Bar and takes about half an hour unless you linger in the crypt. Just across the street is a lovely park with grass if your kids want to run around before or after.

The Guinness Storehouse is a popular option and works well with kids of all ages because the interactive exhibits are engaging throughout the self-guided tour. It’s even nursing-friendly (I know from experience!). The entry ticket includes a drink at the top of the building, with juice and soda available for kids.

For dinner, the Merry Ploughboy outside the city center is a well-known option for traditional Irish music and dance combined with a meal. It is a lively evening and keeps kids entertained. You can book the dinner and show together or separately depending on your preferences.

If you would rather skip Dublin and go straight to the southwest, fly into Shannon and head directly to Killarney.

Day 2: Kilkenny, Cobh, Cork, and On to Killarney

Day 2 is one of the longer driving days on this Ireland itinerary, but it does not have to feel like one. The drive from Dublin to Killarney is about three hours without stops, so breaking it up makes the day much more enjoyable for kids.

Kilkenny is a natural first stop. The town is about 1.5 hours from Dublin and makes a great lunch break. The medieval castle is right in the center, and there is a playground nearby. The streets are easy to walk with kids, and there are plenty of spots for a casual lunch. If you have more time, a short boat trip on the river is a fun option.

From Kilkenny, head south toward the coast. Cobh is about two hours from Kilkenny and makes a natural midday stop on the way to Killarney. It is a colorful harbor town that served as the Titanic’s last port of call, and the Titanic Experience there is genuinely well done. You are given a boarding pass with the name of a real passenger who boarded in Cobh, and you follow their journey through the exhibit before finding out at the end whether your person survived. Book your time slot ahead of time and arrive early since parking requires some planning and the tour starts on schedule.

If you want to add another iconic Irish stop, continue on to Cork and Blarney Castle before heading to Killarney. Blarney Castle is one of Ireland’s most famous attractions and is home to the legendary Blarney Stone. The Blarney Stone is famous because of the legend that kissing it gives you the “gift of the gab” (the ability to speak with eloquence, charm, and persuasive wit). The castle grounds are worth exploring even if you skip the stone, with gardens, trails, and plenty of space for kids to stretch their legs. Keep in mind that adding Blarney Castle makes this an even fuller day, so I would choose it over some of the other stops rather than trying to do everything.

After Cobh and Cork, it is about an hour and a half to Killarney, depending on your stops.

Day 3: The Ring of Kerry

Day 3 is the highlight of most Ireland itineraries: The Ring of Kerry The Ring of Kerry is one of the most iconic spots on any Ireland itinerary. It’s a 179-kilometer (111.23 miles) coastal loop, and you can do it on a guided bus tour or independently by car. The independent route gives you full control over stops and timing, which makes a big difference with kids.

The classic route starts in Killarney and goes counterclockwise. Here are the stops worth building your day around:

• Ladies View: A roadside viewpoint about 20 minutes from Killarney with panoramic views of the Upper Lake. It is a quick stop and a great first photo of the day.
• Sneem: A small village about an hour into the drive. It has a fairy trail through the center of town that leads to a playground. There are also souvenir shops and coffee options.
• Kerry Cliffs: One of the main attractions along the ring. The cliffs are dramatic and the views stretch out over the Atlantic. There is some uphill walking involved but it is manageable for most kids.

• Portmagee: A small fishing village and a good spot for lunch. The Moorings restaurant here is a popular stop known for seafood.
• Ballycarbery Castle: A ruined castle just off the road that you can walk around freely. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes and kids tend to enjoy the exploration.
• Rossbeigh Beach: A long sandy beach with views across the bay. A good spot to end the drive and let kids run around before heading back into Killarney.

The full loop takes most of the day. Killarney Brewing Company in town is a casual dinner option after you are back.

Day 4: Killarney Area Adventures

After a big driving day, staying local around Killarney is a good reset. There is enough within 30 minutes of town to fill a full day without putting anyone back in the car for hours.

Muckross House and Gardens is a Victorian mansion set inside Killarney National Park. The gardens are free to walk and are well worth the visit on their own. You can also buy tickets to tour the house, which is kept largely as it was during the Victorian period. The bigger draw for families with younger kids is the working farm on the property. There are baby animals throughout, including sheep, bunnies, pigs, donkeys, and ducks, plus demonstrations of traditional farming practices. There is also a playground on site. Plan to spend two to three hours here easily.

Torc Waterfall is a short drive from Muckross and an easy walk from the car park, roughly 10 minutes each way. It is a good stop to add between Muckross and your next activity without adding much time to the day. Ross Castle is also nearby on the water and a quick spot to see ducks and explore a bit.

Kissane Sheep Farm runs sheepdog demonstrations that are consistently a highlight for families visiting the Killarney area. The farmer explains how the dogs work, the dogs herd actual sheep during the demonstration, and then guests can go inside to learn more about sheep farming in Kerry. It tends to be one of those stops that surprises kids who have no particular interest in farming.

Murphy’s Ice Cream has a location in Killarney town and uses locally sourced Irish ingredients. It is worth stopping before heading back to the hotel.

Day 5: The Dingle Peninsula

Day 5 is where this Ireland itinerary gets a little wilder. The Dingle Peninsula is less trafficked than the Ring of Kerry and has a wilder, more remote feel. The drive loops around the tip of the peninsula and takes most of the day if you stop regularly, which you will want to. The roads narrow significantly toward the western end of the peninsula, but that is part of the experience.

A few stops worth planning for:

• Dingle town: A good spot for lunch and a short wander. It is a lively harbor town with good food options and souvenir shops.
• Slea Head Drive: The outer loop of the peninsula with coastal views and ancient stone beehive huts (clochans) that date back to the early Christian period. Kids can walk through and explore them.
• Animal farms along the route: There are a few spots along the peninsula road where you can stop to pet and feed alpacas, goats, sheep, and baby lambs. These are informal and easy to spot from the road.
• Gallarus Oratory: A small early Christian church that has stood largely intact for over a thousand years. It is a quick stop but genuinely impressive given its age.
• Coumeenoole Beach: One of the most dramatic beaches on the peninsula. There is a parking area at the top and a path down to the sand. If the weather cooperates, it is worth getting down to the beach.

This is a day best done without a fixed schedule. The stops are spread out along the route, so you naturally pace yourselves by what is ahead on the road.

Day 6: Cliffs of Moher and Galway

Today’s drive takes you north from Killarney toward Galway, with the Cliffs of Moher as the midday stop. It is a long driving day, but the payoff is significant.

The Cliffs of Moher are one of Ireland’s most visited sites, and they live up to the expectation. The cliffs stretch for about eight kilometers along the Atlantic coast and reach heights of around 214 meters at their highest point. Arrive when the visitor center opens to get ahead of tour buses, which tend to arrive mid-morning.

A few things to know before you go:

• The wind at the cliffs can be extreme, especially at higher viewpoints. Hold onto hats and keep younger kids close to the safer walking paths near the visitor center. Make sure you bring a jacket with a hood to cover your ears if they’re sensitive to wind.
• There is a steep hill from the parking area up to the cliff edge, but a golf cart shuttle is available for anyone who has difficulty walking.
• Some of the walking trails may be closed depending on conditions. Plan for the main viewpoints rather than counting on the full cliff walk being accessible.

After the cliffs, continue north to Galway. The city is about 1.5 hours from the Cliffs of Moher. Check in, let the kids swim if your hotel has a pool, and keep dinner relaxed.

Day 7: Galway

Galway is a lively, walkable city with colorful streets, good food, and traditional music spilling out of pubs at most hours of the day. It is a good place to end this Ireland itinerary because there is no shortage of things to see and do at as you wander.

The city center itself is easy to explore on foot. The main shopping street, Shop Street, flows into High Street and Quay Street, and most of the restaurants and pubs are concentrated in this area. Murphy’s Ice Cream has a Galway location as well, which is worth tracking down if you missed it in Killarney.

Brigit’s Garden, about 20 minutes outside the city, is worth the trip if you have younger kids or kids who are into fairy tales and nature. It is a Celtic-themed garden with a fairy village, interactive elements, and walking trails through a wooded property. It tends to be quieter than city center attractions and is a nice morning activity before heading into town for the afternoon.

If you want a structured activity, a walking tour of the city is a good way to get a feel for the history without having to plan each stop yourself.

Day 8: Head Home

Dublin is about three hours from Galway, so factor in travel time to the airport if you are flying home from Dublin. It’s a quicker ride heading straight back across the country, though less scenic. If you booked a direct flight home from Shannon, the drive is closer to an hour from Galway.

If you want to add one more stop before the airport, Athlone is a convenient halfway point between Galway and Dublin with a small castle on the river and a walkable town center.

What Works Well When Traveling Ireland With Kids

One thing that makes this Ireland itinerary work with kids is keeping drives to under an hour between stops. Ireland has enough interesting things along every route that you can almost always find a natural stopping point. Use Google Maps to save spots in advance so you have a list of options rather than making decisions in the moment with tired kids. Remember to back a few essentials in the car like bottled water and trash bags, and we always bring along sick bags just in case…the roads are very narrow and winding in Ireland, so be prepared if anyone in your crew gets motion sick.

When building your Ireland itinerary, hotels with pools are worth prioritizing if you are traveling with kids who are going to need a reset day or a low-key afternoon. Many family hotels in Ireland have indoor pools, though most require swim caps, so come prepared.

Picnic meals are a useful tool on busy adventure days. A quick stop at a grocery store for bread, cheese, fruit, and snacks can take the pressure off finding a restaurant that works for everyone after a long day of exploring.

Build in one or two low-key days where kids can run around the hotel grounds, swim, or just have unscheduled time. Ireland is easy to over-plan because there is so much to see, but the trips that work best with kids tend to have a mix of big adventure days and quieter recovery time.

Final Thoughts

One week in Ireland will give you a great taste and leave you wanting to plan your next trip before you leave. The southwest is the most scenic and family-friendly region to start with, and most families come home wishing they had more time. If you get to Ireland once, you will want to go back.

I’ll be the first to admit it: if I’m planning a trip, there is a 90% chance I’m trying to figure out how to get back to Italy. And Rome is the quintessential Italy experience that every family needs to have at least one (and maybe more than once!) It is the kind of city that just feeds your soul: the history, beautiful, and food are all ideal for core memory making.

Taking the kids to an ancient, big, bustling city can feel like a massive undertaking, but that is exactly what this guide is designed for! From dodging the tourist traps to finding the best spots for kids among the ruins, I’ve done the heavy lifting for you. I’m sharing all my best tips and favorite stops so you can skip the stress and get straight to the magic. Andiamo!

Before You Go: A Few Things to Know About Rome

Book Everything in Advance

I cannot stress this enough: The Colosseum, the Vatican, and most major sites run on timed entry tickets. Lines without a reservation can stretch for hours, and that is not a situation you want to be in with a kid in the summer heat. If you are planning to visit Rome with kids, book any must-do popular tourist attractions ideally 60 days ahead of your visit.

The Cobblestones Are Real

Rome’s historic center is almost entirely paved with uneven cobblestones, and they will test your feet and stroller situation fast. Ladies, I know the Italians are super fashionable, but this isn’t the place to wear your best heels. Everyone in your party needs a flat walking shoe to avoid turning an ankle.

As for wheels for the kids, we use the Graco Modes Aventura for all of our Europe trips, and it is a lifesaver: wide enough wheels to handle the cobblestones without a fight, and both kids could ride when little legs gave out. Plus, it’s not wide, so you can get down even the tightest sidewalks. A carrier is also worth packing for the spots where strollers simply can’t go, like St. Peter’s Basilica or any underground tour.

Best Time to Visit Rome with Kids

• Autumn (September through October): My absolute top choice for families; I just love Italy in the fall! Temperatures drop to a very pleasant range, the summer crowds thin out, and the city has a beautiful golden quality in the light. September especially feels like Rome at its most livable.
• Winter (November through February): The least busy time of year, which has real appeal if your kids are in school and you’re traveling over holiday breaks. Christmas in Rome is magical, with markets and lights throughout the historic center. January and February are cold and quiet, which some families love.
• Spring (March through May): The weather is mild, flowers are everywhere, and the crowds are manageable compared to summer. Long days out are comfortable, and your kids won’t be melting on the walk between gelato stops.
• Summer (June through August): Doable, but genuinely brutal heat-wise, especially July and August. If this is your only window, plan for very early mornings, a long midday break at your hotel, and lighter afternoon outings. Hydration and shade become your whole strategy.
• Important Note about August & December: These are prime holiday months for the entire country of Italy, and many shops, restaurants, and attractions will close completely during these months. If you must travel then, check that what you want to do is available before booking.

Where to Stay

Your neighborhood choice will shape your whole trip. Staying close to the historic center means you can walk back to your hotel for nap time without losing half the day to a taxi.

• The Pantheon and Piazza Navona area is a great base: central, charming, and with enough cafés nearby that you will never be far from a snack.
• The Trastevere neighborhood is another solid pick for families, with a relaxed village-like feel, beautiful streets, and good restaurants with outdoor seating.
• If you want to be close to the Vatican, the Prati neighborhood is quieter and very walkable.
• One our last trip, we stayed at The Tribune using Hyatt points. We were thrilled with our stay there and highly recommend it.

The Best Things to Do in Rome with Kids

The Colosseum and Roman Forum

This is the big one, and young kids will definitely be amazed. My kids had no real frame of reference for ancient Rome before we arrived, but standing inside the Colosseum gave them something to grab onto. Gladiators. Giant arenas. Stories. It clicked in a way that a museum probably would not have.

Practical Tips for Visiting the Colosseum with Kids

Book skip-the-line tickets in advance or go one better and book a family-friendly guided tour that includes skip-the-line access. Tours designed for kids often use a scavenger hunt format, which is genuinely the difference between a 20-minute attention span and a kid who is engaged for the full visit. The Colosseum has elevators for families with strollers, so you can get to the upper level without navigating stairs. The underground and arena floor access require a carrier rather than a stroller, so keep that in mind when choosing your ticket type.

The Roman Forum is right next door and included in most Colosseum tickets. My honest advice: if your kids are on the younger end of the 3 to 6 range, do the Colosseum and save the Forum for when they are a little older. It is a large, largely open-air site with a lot of “look at these ruins” energy, which is harder to make exciting for a little kid.

PRO TIP: I always book a professional photo session on our family trips, and Rome was no exception. We had ours at the Colosseum and the photos are honestly some of my favorite we have ever taken as a family. It’s non-negotiable for me whenever we travel. This is the photo shoot that we did. The Trevi Fountain

No list of things to do in Rome with kids is complete without this one, and for good reason. The Trevi Fountain is genuinely spectacular, and the coin-throwing tradition is an instant win with little kids. Give each child their own coin, explain the tradition (one coin means you’ll return to Rome, two means you’ll fall in love, three means you’ll get married), and let them do their own wish.

What to Know About the New Ticketing System

Rome introduced a paid entry system at the Trevi Fountain starting February 2026. Non-residents now need to buy a 2-euro ticket to approach the fountain and toss their coins. That’s just over two dollars per person, so for a family it’s a small but real line item to factor in.

Tickets can be purchased online on the official website, at the Civic Museums, at Tourist Infopoints, at affiliated sales points, or at the entrance by card only. The ticketed hours run every day from 9am to 10pm. Children under five get in free, and there are no time limits once you’re down at the basin level, which is great news with kids because you’re not being rushed through the moment.

The good news is that the crowd management system has made the basin area noticeably less chaotic, which honestly makes the experience better for families. The coin-throwing moment lands differently when you’re not elbow-to-elbow with 400 strangers. Keep in mind that you can still view the fountain from the street level (as pictured above) without paying the fee, but you’ll be too far to throw a coin if that’s important for you.

When to Go

Early morning is still the most pleasant time to visit. The fountain is lit beautifully, the crowds are thin, and you can linger without the ticketed rush starting. If early mornings don’t work with your kids’ schedule, late evening after 10pm is lovely and free. Midday in peak season is the one window I’d avoid. If you’re coming from the U.S. take advantage of the time change the first few days and hit it during a window your kids are still on their home time zone.

Villa Borghese Gardens

This park is one of the best things to do in Rome with kids, full stop. Think of it as Rome’s Central Park, but arguably more charming. There is a playground, a small zoo called the Bioparco, pedal boats you can rent on the lake, electric bike rentals with kids’ seats, and a little train that loops through the park when small legs are done walking.

How to Spend a Day at Villa Borghese

A good approach is to start the morning with a bike rental and ride through the park before it gets busy. Most rental spots require an ID, so keep that handy. After a couple of hours of exploring, the park cafés are a solid option for a relaxed lunch before letting the kids loose at the playground.

For families who love animals, the Bioparco is worth building into the day. It’s compact enough to do in a couple of hours and has a good mix of animals without being overwhelming. The pedal boats on the lake are another hit with young kids, and the little train that loops through the park is a great option when small legs are done walking.

Piazza Navona

Piazza Navona might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Rome with kids, but it earns a spot on the list every time. It is one of the most beautiful squares in Italy, with Bernini’s famous Fountain of the Four Rivers right at the center, but for young kids, it’s basically a giant outdoor living room.

There’s space to run, street performers to watch, gelato carts, and if you time it right, bubble vendors near the fountain.

The square is pedestrian-only and the energy at dusk is wonderful. It’s also an easy walk from most hotels in the historic center, so it became our natural endpoint for the day.

A Scavenger Hunt ArtLab Tour

Instead of just walking past Rome’s legendary landmarks like the Trevi Fountain and Piazza Navona, we booked a private 2.5-hour Scavenger Hunt ArtLab Tour with AJ’s Little Artists. AJ is a local art historian, who expertly turns the historic city center into an open-air laboratory.

Our kids were given a scavenger hunt sheet to track down hidden animal sculptures carved into fountains, churches, and buildings. My five-year-old was totally locked in tracking down everything from lions and turtles to unexpected ones like an armadillo and an elephant.

While the kids tracked animals, the adults got the deep-dive history. My husband loved the anecdotal stories behind the architecture, like how Bernini deliberately faced his elephant statue’s backside toward a rival priest’s front door in Piazza della Minerva. Even though I’ve been to Rome three times, we were noticing gems hidden in plain sight that I had completely missed before.

What makes this truly unique is that it’s sightseeing meets art-making. AJ brings art supplies and cushions, finding perfect shady spots directly in front of the landmarks, so the kids and adults can sit and color their own custom masterpieces. My mom loved how effortlessly AJ brought the children into the experience while making the history fun for all three generations. By the end, it felt less like sightseeing and more like a core family memory.

Golf Cart Tour of Rome

One of the most unexpectedly fun things we did in Rome was a golf cart tour, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions of the whole trip for families with young kids. Instead of navigating taxis (and the car seat question that comes with them) or walking long stretches between sights, you load everyone into a covered golf cart with a local guide and cover a huge amount of the city in a relaxed, low-effort way.

We passed through neighborhoods and past landmarks we might have skipped on foot, and the kids loved riding around town. No car seats required, no stroller logistics, just a comfortable way to see the city together.

Tours typically run a couple of hours and cover the main highlights of the historic center. Look for family-friendly options that let you customize the route or make stops along the way.

The Pantheon

Nearly 2,000 years old and still standing with its original dome intact. The Pantheon is arguably the best-preserved ancient building in Rome, and walking through those bronze doors puts the scale of Roman engineering right in front of you.

The oculus is a 9-meter wide opening at the top of the dome that lets in natural light and, when it rains, water falls straight through onto the marble floor below. To handle it, Roman engineers designed the floor with a slight convex curve sloping down from the center, with 22 hidden drainage holes built in to move the water out efficiently. A 2,000-year-old drainage system that still works today. That’s the kind of detail that makes the Pantheon worth explaining to your kids before you walk in.

What to Know Before You Visit

Tickets are required and must be booked in advance. There’s no stroller access inside, so plan to fold yours or wear your youngest in a carrier. The visit itself is relatively short, maybe 30 to 45 minutes, which is perfect for the attention span of young kids. Pair it with a gelato stop just outside and you have a happy post-visit situation.

Castel Sant’Angelo

Castel Sant’Angelo looks like a castle, functions like a fortress, and has enough spiral ramps, towers, and old cannons that kids treat it like a giant adventure playground. There’s a small playground within the castle grounds, too, which is handy if you need a break mid-visit. The views from the top over the Tiber and back toward St. Peter’s are genuinely beautiful.

Visiting with a Stroller

The ramps inside are manageable for most strollers, though some sections are steep. I’d recommend leaving the stroller at the entrance and wearing your child if they’re not walking confidently yet, or keeping close hold on little ones who might sprint toward the ramparts.

Monument to Victor Emmanuel II

Romans call it the Vittoriano, and visitors have a few less flattering nicknames for it, the Wedding Cake and the Typewriter being the most common, which gives you a sense of how divisive this building is among locals. But for families visiting Rome with kids, it earns its spot on the list for a simple reason: the rooftop view is one of the best in the entire city, and getting up there is genuinely fun for kids.

A panoramic glass elevator takes you to the top terrace, where you get sweeping views over the Imperial Fora, the Pantheon, St. Peter’s Basilica, and Via del Corso. It’s the kind of panorama that helps young kids start to piece together the geography of everything they’ve been seeing at street level.

The monument itself is enormous: 135 meters wide and 70 meters tall, built from white marble with Corinthian columns, grand stairways, and bronze statues crowning the top. It was built to honor Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of a unified Italy, and since 1921 it has also housed the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, guarded day and night by two sentinels. The changing of the guard happens every hour and is worth timing your visit around.

Practical Tips

• Entry to walk around and climb the stairs is free.
• The panoramic elevator to the top terrace has a small fee.
• If you’re just heading up for the view, about 30 minutes is plenty.
• The monument sits right at Piazza Venezia, which makes it an easy add-on if you’re already heading toward the Roman Forum or the Pantheon.

Explora Children’s Museum

When you need a break from sightseeing, Explora is the answer. Located on Via Flaminia 82, within walking distance of Piazza del Popolo, it’s Rome’s children’s museum built entirely around the idea that play is a tool for learning and discovery. The exhibits cover science, nature, technology, and hands-on sensory experiences, and the whole place is designed to feel more like an adventure than a classroom.

Visits run on a timed schedule across four daily sessions: 10:00 to 11:45, 12:00 to 13:45, 15:00 to 16:45, and 17:00 to 18:45. Each session lasts 1 hour and 45 minutes. Tickets need to be booked in advance, as spots fill up, especially during school holidays. The museum is closed on Mondays. Worth packing your own snacks just in case. If you hit a hot afternoon or a rainy day, this is where to go.

A Pizza or Pasta Making Class

This is the kind of thing to do in Rome with kids that they will talk about when they get home. Hands-on cooking classes designed for families are widely available and they are genuinely fun, not just for the kids but for everyone. Most run for a couple of hours and end with eating what you made, which is the best part.

Trastevere Neighborhood Wander

Trastevere sits just across the Tiber from the historic center and feels like a completely different city. Cobblestone alleys, ivy-covered facades, laundry strung between windows, and a pace that has nothing to do with tourist itineraries. It is the kind of neighborhood that rewards slow walking and no particular plan, and it also happens to be one of the best places in Rome to sit down for a real meal.

What Makes It Good for Kids

Piazza San Cosimato has a playground that is perfect for burning off late-afternoon energy before dinner. The outdoor trattorias here are relaxed and unhurried. For gelato, look for shops labeled “gelato artigianale,” which signals it is made in-house with real ingredients rather than the puffed-up brightly colored versions near the major tourist sites. Google Maps ratings are your friend here.

Vatican City and St. Peter’s Basilica

Vatican City is technically its own country, which is one of those facts that lands surprisingly well with curious kids. There are no passport controls and no real border crossing to worry about, so for practical purposes you simply walk in from Rome. The area breaks down into a few distinct parts, and how much you tackle depends entirely on the age and energy of your kids.

St. Peter’s Square

St. Peter’s Square is a massive pedestrian-only space with plenty of room to move around, impressive columns on all sides, and vendors nearby if you need snacks to keep things moving. This is genuinely the easiest part of the Vatican to enjoy. No tickets, no queues, no time pressure. Just an enormous beautiful square with one of the most iconic facades in the world in front of you.

St. Peter’s Basilica

Entrance to the Basilica is free, though no tickets are required to get in. Some skip-the-line tickets are available and worth considering, since everyone still passes through security regardless. Arrive early, ideally before 9am, to keep the queuing to a minimum. The Basilica is enormous and the decoration is elaborate enough to hold a young child’s attention in a way that most museums do not.

A few practical things to know before you go: strollers are not allowed inside, so plan to check yours at the cloakroom or use a carrier. Food and drinks are also not permitted inside, so feed and water everyone beforehand. The dress code is strict and applies to kids, too: shoulders and knees covered for everyone, no exceptions. Pack a light scarf or layer in your bag to avoid being turned away at the entrance after waiting in line.

The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel

This is where you need to be honest with yourself about your kids. The museums involve slow-moving crowds, a lot of walking, and a sheer volume of art and artifacts that is genuinely overwhelming for young children. If visiting the museums is important to you, the best approach is to book a family-friendly guided tour with skip-the-line access. Some tours include interactive kids booklets with activities and quizzes that keep younger visitors engaged through the galleries, the Raphael Rooms, and Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling. Without a guide, it is a long and disorienting experience even for adults.

Vatican Museums tickets are released 60 days in advance and sell out fast, so book as early as possible once your travel dates are confirmed.

Tips for Getting Around Rome with Kids

Rome is mostly a walking city, especially in the historic center. Taxis and ride-shares are easier than buses when you have a stroller because buses require you to fold everything up in a crowd. The metro has limited coverage in the historic areas (ancient underground infrastructure gets in the way), so don’t count on it as your primary way around. However, it can be useful in some areas, but you will be carrying your stroller up and down the stairs to enter and exit, if you bring one.

Keep your days flexible enough to walk back to your home base for downtime. One big activity in the morning, a slow lunch, a rest, and then something lower-key in the afternoon is a schedule that works really well. Rome is not a city you need to race through, and the pressure to see everything in one trip is the fastest way to make everyone miserable. Italians are all about slowing down and enjoying life, so embrace that part of the culture.

A few coins for bathroom entry are worth keeping in your bag. Many public restrooms in tourist areas charge a small fee, and scrambling for change with an urgent kid is its own kind of adventure.

Things to Do in Rome with Kids: Packing Tips

Beyond your usual travel gear, a few things can make your trip noticeably easier. A sturdy-wheeled stroller over an ultra-light umbrella stroller for the cobblestones. A carrier for the stroller-restricted sites. A small day bag with snacks, water, and a change of clothes for the inevitably messy gelato moments.

Final Thoughts

Rome rewards the families who slow down, and that is really the secret to making Rome with kids so memorable. The city has a way of delivering its best moments between the sights: a piazza stumbled upon at dusk, a gelato eaten on the steps of a fountain, a side street that leads nowhere in particular but looks like a painting. Build in the downtime, keep the days flexible, and let the city do some of the work. That is the trip worth planning.

  I’ll be the first to admit it: if I’m planning a trip, there is a 90% chance I’m trying to figure out how to get back to Italy. And Rome is the quintessential Italy experience that every family needs to have at least one (and maybe more than once!) It is the kind of city that just feeds your soul: the history, beautiful, and food are all ideal for core memory making.

  Taking the kids to an ancient, big, bustling city can feel like a massive undertaking, but that is exactly what this guide is designed for! From dodging the tourist traps to finding the best spots for kids among the ruins, I’ve done the heavy lifting for you. I’m sharing all my best tips and favorite stops so you can skip the stress and get straight to the magic. Andiamo!

I will be honest with you: some of the most meaningful travel I have ever done had nothing to do with a famous landmark or a bucket-list city. It happened in tiny towns most people have never heard of, standing in the exact spot where my family started. That is the magic of genealogy trips. You are not just sightseeing. You are walking into your own story.

This is the second genealogy trip I have planned for my family. A few years ago we traced my mom’s side back to England and Scotland, and it was such a powerful experience that I knew we would do it again. This time, we traced my dad’s side of the family to Italy, specifically the Avellino area.

Here is the part I want you to hear, especially if you are an American whose family came from somewhere else a few generations back: you can research and plan a trip like this yourself. You do not need an expensive service or a professional genealogist to get started. A lot of the research is readily available, and most of the tools are free. You just need to know where to look! Let me walk you through exactly how we figured out where our family came from, and how we turned it into an actual trip.

What Genealogy Trips Actually Are (and Who They Are For)

You will see a few different names for this kind of travel. Some people call it heritage travel, some call it ancestry travel, and some call it roots travel. They all point to the same idea: visiting the places your family came from to understand where you come from.

There is a bit of a spectrum here. On one end, heritage travel can simply mean visiting the country or region your family is from, soaking up the culture and the food and the general feeling of the place. On the other end, genealogy trips can get quite specific. You are visiting the actual village, finding the church where your great-grandparents were married, maybe even standing in front of the house they lived in or meeting long-lost family members. How deep you go is completely up to you.

For us, it was important to see the actual small towns our family members lived in. They are not tourist destinations, bBut that is exactly the point. The value is not the place itself. It is the connection. So this guide is as much about how you can find your own places as it is about where we went.

How to Trace Your Roots Before You Go

Before you can plan, you need to know where you’re actually going. This is the research part, and it can be genuinely fun to discover your roots, but I also have to admit that sometimes it’s a little frustrating if you don’t have much information to start. It feels like detective work. Here’s how to uncover your family history without spending a dime.

Start with the Relatives You Already Have

Before you touch a website, talk to your oldest living relatives. Grandparents, great-aunts, the cousin who always seems to know everyone. Ask them for full names, maiden names, approximate dates, and any town names they remember, even if the spelling is fuzzy. Write it all down. This is the foundation everything else builds on, and these stories have a way of disappearing if nobody asks for them.

Use Free Online Tools to Find Your Ancestral Town

This is the step that surprises people. You do not need a paid subscription to make real progress. A few free resources do most of the heavy lifting:

FamilySearch

FamilySearch is run by a nonprofit organization. It’s completely free and holds billions of historical records from all over the world. This is usually where I start. You can build a family tree and search census, birth, marriage, and death records that often list the exact town your ancestors came from.

Ellis Island / Statue of Liberty Records

If your family immigrated to the U.S. between the late 1800s and early 1900s, the passenger arrival records are searchable for free. These manifests frequently list the town from where the person left, which is gold when you are trying to pin down a starting point.

Find A Grave

Find a Grave is a free, volunteer-built database of cemetery records. It is a great way to confirm names and dates, and sometimes to find relatives you did not know existed buried near each other.

Antenati

This website is specifically for Italian roots. It offers free access to digitized civil records from the Italian State Archives, including birth, marriage, and death certificates. If you already know your ancestor’s hometown, you may even be able to view scans of the original documents.

The goal of this step is to get from “somewhere in Italy” to the actual name of a town. Once you have that, everything gets easier.

How to Visit These Tiny Towns

So you have a town name. Now what? When the place is too small to have a tourism website or a single hotel, you have to get a little creative.

Find the Town’s Facebook Group

This is my favorite tip because it works almost every time. Search Facebook for the town’s name. Most small towns, even ones with a few hundred people, have a community group or a “you know you’re from here if…” page. Join it. These groups are full of locals and, very often, descendants of people who emigrated. You can post that your family came from there, share the surnames you are researching, and ask if anyone recognizes them. People are usually thrilled to help.

Reach Out to Local Churches and Town Offices

In a lot of these towns, the church holds records that never made it online. A polite email or message ahead of time, letting them know you are coming and sharing the names you are looking for, can open doors. The same goes for the town hall or local records office. Give them plenty of notice, and be patient. Many of these small towns don’t staff these local offices daily. It helps a lot to Google Translate your message before sending as well, since some of the staff in smaller towns will be older and not fluent in English.

Map the Actual Places You Want to See

Once you know where you are going, drop pins in Google Maps for every meaningful spot: the house, the church, the cemetery, the piazza. It helps you see how close together everything is, plan a realistic route, and make sure you are not driving two hours each way for a five-minute stop. Consider also that some of these towns will not have a hotel or a restaurant, so you’ll need to have a plan for where to eat and stay in relatively proximity.

What We Actually Found in Our Three Towns

For our genealogy trip, the research led us to three small towns in the Avellino area: Atripalda, Aquilonia, and Santa Paolina. I want to be honest about what each one was like, because it shows you that not every stop delivers the same thing, and that is completely okay.

Aquilonia was the one with the most to see in terms of our family history. The town has a tragic past. A devastating earthquake destroyed it in 1930, and there is now a museum and the ruins of the old town you can walk through. For me, this stop was deeply personal. My great-great-grandmother died in that earthquake, and her name is on the memorial in the cemetery. My dad, who had heard stories about his grandfather’s mother from him found the memorial quite moving.

This tragedy is actually the main reason we were able to find such a rich history on our family in this town. Because of the earthquake, the museum was created, and along with it came curators and historians, who recorded our family’s history. I was able to connect with them via the town’s Facebook page and get an English speaking tour scheduled. Due to this town’s tiny size, we weren’t able to stay nearby, and our tour guide had to arrange for the only restaurant in town to open especially for us for lunch.

Atripalda and Santa Paolina were different. We knew our family came from these towns through our research, but there was not a specific house or grave waiting for us. What we did instead was visit the things that were there when our ancestors were, the Roman ruins, the old churches, the streets they would have walked. And felt special enough. You do not always need a big discovery. Sometimes just standing where they stood, seeing what they saw, is the whole point.

Being that Atripalda is a bit of a larger city (Atripalda: ~ 10,172 residents; Aquilonia: ~ 1,485 residents; Santa Paolina: ~ 1,122 residents), there was much more to do there in terms of “being a tourist”, including restaurants, well-preserved town history, and even a gelateria. In Santa Paolina, the highlight was speaking to some of the current residents, who were delighted to see travelers visiting their town. In Italian, an older gentleman told us he hadn’t seen tourists in the town in “many moons”, while inquiring the reason for our visit. He was delighted we were there, and invited us to dinner at his home.

Turning the Research Into a Real Trip

Here is something I learned the first time around, on my mom’s England and Scotland trip: a roots trip works best when it is not only about the research. These tiny towns are often near places you would genuinely want to visit anyway, so build the trip around both.

For our family, the genealogy portion is paired with a bigger Italy trip, and we have spent plenty of time in the must-see spots too. A few things that make genealogy trips smoother:

• Give yourself buffer time. Small-town visits never go exactly to plan, and the best moments are usually the unplanned ones. Leave time to wander, explore, and chat with locals if you can.
• Bring copies of old family photos and a simple family tree printout. Showing a photo to a local is a kind of magic. Names and dates translate across any language.
• Document everything while you are there. Take pictures of records, gravestones, and street signs. Keep a few notes each night so the details do not blur together.
• Be flexible about language, and try to learn at least some basic things. Google Translate is a great tool.
• Try to arrive in the morning or late afternoon. Many small towns close for a few hours after lunch during the midday break, so you don’t want to arrive when everything is closed.
