HomeExchange: The Budget-Friendly Way to Travel Like a Local

A large family stands in front of a HomeExchange in Miramar Beach, Florida

Traveling as a family is magical—but let’s face it, travel expenses can pile up faster than your kids can dump their entire suitcase in the middle of the living room. Enter HomeExchange, a clever way to swap homes with other travelers and enjoy cozy accommodations without the hefty price tag. It’s budget- and family-friendly, and offers an authentic travel experience that’s hard to beat. In this post, I’m sharing all about HomeExchange and our experience, plus expert tips after being a member for the last three years.

What is HomeExchange?

If you’ve seen The Holiday, you might remember Iris (Kate Winslet) and Amanda (Cameron Diaz) swapping homes for a Christmas getaway. That’s HomeExchange in a nutshell—minus Jude Law unexpectedly showing up at your door (sorry!).

HomeExchange is a platform where members swap homes to explore new destinations without paying for accommodations. With over 200,000 homes in 159 countries, it’s a budget-friendly way for families to travel while enjoying the comfort and space of a real home.

Our Personal Experience with HomeExchange

As someone who is on a mission to bring you the best and most affordable vacation options for your family, I knew that HomeExchange was something we had to try. We’ve now been HomeExchange members for three years, and we’ve had several successful exchanges, all of which happened to be at the beach, our happy place!

We’ve found that using HomeExchange for an annual summer beach vacation is perfect for our family’s preferences and budget. Most beach towns have fairly limited hotel options, and home rentals are at an absolute premium during the high tourist season in the summer months. With HomeExchange, we can stay exactly where we want–within walking distance of the beach–for no out of pocket cost. We can also be flexible about the size of the home that we need based on who may want to travel with us.

One year, all of the grandparents decided to join us, and we were able to find a home with five bedrooms across the street from the beach. This really wouldn’t have been affordable without HomeExchange, and I’m very grateful that this has been an option for us.

Why HomeExchange is Perfect for Families

Travel Without the Price Tag

Forget paying for accommodations—with HomeExchange, you’re swapping homes with other members. That means no nightly fees and more room in your budget for memorable experiences, flights, and dining.

Some homes even come with toys, highchairs, cribs, strollers, and other items that help families travel lighter. Just check the amenities section in any listing to see what a host might offer.

A More Authentic Experience

Your hosts aren’t just giving you a place to stay—they’re sharing their local tips, favorite restaurants, and off-the-beaten-path gems. It’s like having your own tour guide, a local expert who actually lives in town and can help you feel like you’ve had a local experience, too.

Cultural Exchange

One of the most exciting aspects of using HomeExchange is the opportunity to immerse your family in new cultures. By living among locals, you will get a more immersive look at life in another country.

Better Value than One-Off Home Rentals

Instead of paying per night, your annual membership fee unlocks unlimited exchanges—no matter how long you stay.

How to Signing Up & Creating Your Profile

Setting up your profile and listing your home is easier than you think! Follow these simple steps to get your home ready for an unforgettable swap. With a great profile and a bit of patience, your next amazing adventure is just a message away!

  1. Sign Up for Free
Joining HomeExchange is free! Create your profile, browse homes, and send proposals. You’ll only pay your membership fee once you confirm your first exchange.
  2. Create Your Home Profile
Add a catchy title, describe your home’s unique charm, and share what makes your neighborhood special. Upload at least 5 photos — the more, the better! Don’t forget pictures of your area, too. Keep in mind that even if you don’t initially plan to exchange your own home, you will still need to set up and verify your profile.
  3. Update Your Calendar
Mark dates you’re available for exchanges based on whether you’re open to reciprocal, GuestPoints, or both types of exchanges for those dates. Confirmed swaps will automatically turn red. Other exchangers can still reach out to you for dates that you don’t have as open on your profile, but you can simply say your home isn’t available.
  4. Build Your Personal Profile
Introduce yourself and your travel companions. Add a family photo, share your hobbies, and let people know what you love about travel.
  5. Pick Your Dream Destinations
Add up to 20 preferred destinations and explore the Reverse Search tool to find members who want to visit your area. Don’t forget to “heart” your favorite homes and check who’s saved yours!

Tips for First-Time HomeExchangers

If this is your first time swapping homes, it can feel a little overwhelming at first, but don’t worry – HomeExchange is designed to be easy and welcoming for newcomers. Here are some tips to help you make the most out of your first exchange:

  • Start Small: For your first exchange, consider choosing a home that’s in a destination you’re familiar with. This will make it easier to focus on the experience of swapping homes rather than navigating an entirely new place.
  • Message Multiple Hosts: Don’t be discouraged if your first exchange offer isn’t immediately accepted. The HomeExchange platform works best with a little patience, so send messages to multiple hosts to increase your chances.
  • Read Reviews: Take the time to read reviews of both the home and the host. Reviews are a great way to gauge whether this is a home that fits your family’s needs and whether the host has been helpful and reliable in the past.
  • Start with a Reciprocal Exchange: If you can, start with a reciprocal exchange. This gives you a chance to get to know the host and their home, while also allowing you to experience what it’s like to swap in a way that feels more comfortable.

Setting Up Your First Exchange

Write a Winning HomeExchange Proposal

You’ve set up your profile, picked your dream destination, and found some amazing homes that fit your travel plans. Now it’s time to send those all-important exchange proposals!

While some travelers strike gold in just a few messages, for most, finding the perfect match usually takes around 15 messages — sometimes even more.

Here’s how to craft a message that makes hosts say, “Yes! We’d love to swap homes with you!”

  1. Introduce Yourself
Start with a friendly hello! Share a bit about yourself and your travel crew — who’s coming with you, their ages, and maybe a fun fact or two. For your first exchange, let them know what drew you to HomeExchange in the first place. Sharing your excitement can go a long way in winning someone over.
  2. Share Your Travel Plans
Let the host know why their area is calling your name. Are your dates flexible or set in stone? How long are you hoping to stay? Details help build trust and make scheduling easier. Keep in mind that if you’re hoping to stay in someone’s primary home, you’re more likely to score those in the summer or on national holiday weeks like Christmas in the US since these are the times people are more likely to be away from their own homes.
  3. Show You’ve Done Your Homework
Did their cozy patio catch your eye? Are you swooning over their charming kitchen? Mention what you love about their home — it shows you’ve read their profile and aren’t just copying and pasting messages. HomeExchange is really about keeping things personal, so don’t be afraid to be friendly.
  4. Propose Your Exchange Type
Are you thinking of a simultaneous swap or using GuestPoints? Staying flexible here can improve your chances of making things work.
  5. Talk Up Your Own Home and Area
Got great hiking trails nearby? A bustling downtown full of cool cafes? Let them know what they can expect when they visit your neck of the woods. If they have kids, highlight family-friendly activities in your area. If they’re outdoor enthusiasts, mention some awesome local hikes. Tailoring your message shows you’re thoughtful and serious about the exchange.

Preparing Your Own Home

Now that you’ve got your first yes to a reciprocal exchange, there are a few things you can do to prepare your own space that will go a long way. To make your home swap a success, preparation and communication are key. Here’s how to get your home ready and ensure everything goes smoothly.

Prepare Your Home

  • Clean your home thoroughly and make sure beds have fresh sheets.
  • Create a “house guide” with important details like the Wi-Fi password, appliance instructions, emergency contacts, and local recommendations. Guest tend to especially love local restaurant recommendations.
  • Make space for your guests by clearing some closet space and ensuring the kitchen and bathroom are tidy and stocked with essentials. You can also consider creating an “owner’s closet” where you lock away any items you don’t want your guests to have access to like personal documents. This can be a study or bedroom that you don’t advertise for use.
  • Consider leaving a small welcome gift or note to make your guests feel more at home.

Communicate Clearly

  • Discuss expectations with your exchange partner before finalizing the swap. Be clear about things like house rules, pet care (yes, your pets can stay in your home to be cared for by your guests, as long as your clear about this in your listing!), or anything else they should know.
  • Be available for their questions and answer them promptly.
  • Provide clear directions to your home and any important landmarks to help your guests arrive without confusion.
  • Deliver on what you promised in your listing. Honesty is huge for HomeExchange, so make sure that your home is as expected when your guests arrive.
  • Don’t forget the details. For example, if you’re planning to exchange cars, you’ll want to consider car swap insurance. If you’re staying somewhere with a pool or hot tub, you’ll want to make sure your host passes along instructions for those—or that you leave your own if you’re providing a pool or hot tub.

During the Exchange

As the Host

  • Be flexible and understanding — unexpected situations can happen.
  • Respect your guests’ privacy and make sure they feel comfortable in your home.

As the Guest

  • Treat the home as if it were your own — take care of it and keep it tidy. Handle your host’s belongings with care and respect.
  • Follow any instructions or house rules your host provides.
  • Before you leave, make sure the home is clean and in the same condition as when you arrived. Follow any departure day instructions.
  • Be mindful of noise levels and considerate of neighbors and the local community.
  • Leave a positive impression by showing gratitude — a simple thank-you note can go a long way.

After the Exchange

Now that you’ve completed your exchange, it’s time to wrap things up and set the stage for future adventures! Here’s how leaving a review and staying in touch can make all the difference.

  • Leave a Review: After your stay, don’t forget to share your thoughts on the home, location, and host. Your review helps future travelers and gives your host a little love.
  • Be Honest & Helpful: Tell it like it is! Celebrate the great parts and kindly point out anything that could use a little TLC. Your feedback makes a big difference.
  • Help the Community: Your review isn’t just for you—it’s for everyone! Help fellow travelers make the best choice for their next adventure.
  • Check-in After the Stay: Drop your host a quick note to say thanks and make sure everything went as smoothly as you’d hoped.
  • Handle Any Issues: If something didn’t quite go as planned, let your host know respectfully. Clear communication keeps things on track.
  • Stay in Touch: Who knows? You might be planning another exchange in the future. Keep the connection alive for even more travel opportunities down the road!

Safety First: How HomeExchange Protects Your Family

HomeExchange takes security seriously, so you can relax and focus on making memories. Here’s how they keep families safe:

  • Verified Members: Every member goes through a verification process to confirm their identity and home details.
  • Secure Messaging: Chat directly with your host or guest before committing to an exchange.
  • Damage Protection: HomeExchange offers coverage for up to $1,000,000 in case of unexpected issues.
  • 24/7 Support: A dedicated support team is always on hand to help.

Child-Specific Safety & Convenience

Traveling with kids comes with its own set of unique challenges, but HomeExchange can help make family vacations easier and more enjoyable. Here are some things to keep in mind when it comes to child-specific safety and convenience.

  • Childproofing: While most homes are safe for children, it’s always a good idea to double-check the environment for potential hazards, like sharp corners, accessible cleaning supplies, or heavy furniture that might pose a tipping risk. Many hosts will indicate in their profile if they have childproofed their home. We also recommend bringing along some of our own travel-friendly child proofing items.
  • Amenities for Kids: One of the great perks of using HomeExchange is that many hosts provide child-friendly amenities like highchairs, cribs, and toys. Be sure to check the amenities section of any listing and reach out to the host to ask for specific items you may need for your little ones.
  • Kids’ Activities Nearby: Before confirming an exchange, check out the area for kid-friendly activities, such as parks, museums, or family-friendly restaurants. If you’re unsure, ask your host for recommendations—many of them will have great local insights that will make your trip more enjoyable.

Environmental Impact & Sustainable Travel

In addition to offering affordable and authentic travel experiences, HomeExchange is also a great option for eco-conscious families looking to minimize their environmental impact. Here’s how HomeExchange promotes sustainable travel:

  • Reducing the Need for New Construction: Every time you swap a home instead of booking a hotel room, you’re helping to reduce the demand for new buildings and resources. This contributes to less environmental waste and a smaller carbon footprint.
  • Encouraging Sustainable Practices: Many HomeExchange members are passionate about sustainability and may even incorporate eco-friendly practices into their homes—like recycling, using renewable energy, or offering bikes for guests to use instead of cars.
  • Supporting Local Communities: By staying in homes rather than hotels, you’re supporting local communities and small businesses, which often rely more on the tourism that HomeExchange brings than the traditional hotel industry. This creates a more sustainable economic impact on the destinations you visit.

Exchanging in Another Country

If you’re swapping abroad, there are a few cultural considerations to keep in mind to make your stay enjoyable and respectful:

  • Learn About Local Customs: Before you head out, take some time to research local customs, especially in countries where cultural norms may differ significantly from what you’re used to. This shows respect for your host’s way of life and helps you avoid misunderstandings.
  • House Rules and Expectations: Make sure you understand the house rules of the home you’re exchanging with, and be open to communicating your own. Some cultures may have specific expectations around things like footwear inside the home, meal times, or household chores.
  • Language Barriers: If you’re traveling to a non-English speaking country, it can be helpful to learn a few key phrases in the local language. Your host will likely appreciate the effort, and it could make your stay more enjoyable. Make sure the host is able to provide any information you need in English, or that you translate it and ask clarifying questions where needed.
  • Respecting the Neighborhood: You’ll be living in someone’s neighborhood, so respecting local etiquette—whether it’s greeting neighbors or keeping noise levels low—is crucial to making your exchange a positive one for everyone.
