Best Things to Do in DC with Kids: 4 Amazing Museums for Families

Washington, DC is an incredible destination for families, offering a perfect mix of history, culture, and hands-on fun for kids of all ages. Whether you’re exploring world-famous museums, discovering interactive exhibits, or enjoying outdoor adventures, the nation’s capital is packed with fun experiences for the whole family.

On our recent visit, we had a blast exploring some of the best things to do in DC with kids. In addition to some that may be familiar, I’ve also included some lesser-known spots that, in my opinion, should be a part of your family’s itinerary. These places offer unique and interactive experiences that make Washington, DC a city of endless opportunities.

National Children’s Museum

The National Childrens Museum is the perfect spot to burn off energy while exploring STEAM-based exhibits through hands-on play, and it’s one of the best things to do in DC with kids! It’s an ideal stop before a long flight or road trip, giving kids a chance to move, climb, and explore.

Here are some of the Top Exhibits & Activities:

Dream Machine: A three-story climbing structure with slides and tunnels—tons of fun, but we found it a little tricky to keep eyes on our kids.

Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood: Perfect for younger kids with pretend play stations and the neighborhood trolley.

Paw Patrol Adventure Bay: Interactive missions that let kids become part of the Paw Patrol team.

Tinkerers Studio: Hands-on building and engineering experiments to spark creativity.

My kids loved this museum. Our youngest didn’t want to leave the Daniel Tiger room. He also enjoyed experimenting with light and shadows, and playing with the tubes that sucked up pom-poms. Our older son was drawn to the Paw Patrol section and enjoyed making paper airplanes.

For parents, it can be a bit chaotic. Be aware that dream slide climbing structure made me especially anxious because it’s difficult to keep track of your kids as they climb, and the exit is near the building’s main doors. It felt like a security concern since, even with three adults watching two kids, we struggled to keep them in sight.

Open times: Open Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm; closed on Tuesday, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

Address: 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue NW

Tickets: Admission to the museum, which includes access to STEAM-focused exhibits and programs, requires tickets: $18.95 per person for adults and children aged 1 and older, free for children under 1 and members.

National Building Museum

The National Building Museum is all about architecture, design, engineering, construction, and urban planning, and we came here for our little LEGO® lovers, specifically for the “Brick City” exhibit. This incredible exhibit showcases the world’s most iconic architecture, brought to life through meticulously crafted LEGO® builds. My boys couldn’t get enough of the interactive building areas, creating their own imaginative cities and leaving their mark on the expansive “graffiti wall”. Whether you’re crafting a futuristic skyscraper or just stacking blocks for fun, there’s something magical about stepping into the role of an architect—even for the adults.

While the kids build, adults can take in the LEGO® displays of colorful streetscapes from Cartagena, Colombia, festive scenes from Mardi Gras in New Orleans, and intricate temples from places like India and Mexico. The exhibit even captures the magic of castles from medieval Japan and the glittering modern skyline of Las Vegas. Our whole family loved pointing out familiar buildings, like the Roman Colosseum that we had just seen a few months prior in Italy, and the Empire State Building that we’ve seen many times in nearby New York City.

Downstairs, the kids also enjoyed “Building Stories,” the first national exhibition that brings the magic of architecture, engineering, and design to life through the pages of beloved children’s books. Perfect for families with kids in grades K-3, this hands-on experience encourages creativity and curiosity as young minds explore the world of construction and design. The exhibit also included take home notebooks and pencils for the kids to write their own stories.

<img decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/washington-dc-40-683x1024.jpg" alt="LEGO model of the Empire State Building in a glass case, with a plaque stating it has 15,200 bricks and took 65 hours to build.
The Building Readers Club is the exhibition’s main educational initiative, developed in partnership with the DC Public Library and DC Public Library Foundation. This free program helps families dive deeper into the worlds of architecture, engineering, construction, and design through carefully selected children’s books.

As for me, I enjoyed the “House and Home” exhibit, which brought back so many memories, with objects and photographs that reminded me of my childhood home and my grandparents’ cozy spaces as they were in the 1980s and 90s. This exhibit weaves together stories of American home life, showcasing how technology, culture, and traditions have shaped what it means to feel at home. It’s a thoughtful and nostalgic look into how we live in our homes and one of the best things to do in DC with kids.

The Butterfly Pavilion at the National Museum of Natural History

The National Museum of Natural History is the world’s most visited natural history museum, inviting families to explore the wonders of our planet and its incredible history. The museum is free to enter, but the Butterfly Pavilion requires a separate admission fee.

The Butterfly Pavilion at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History is a magical, immersive experience that brings visitors up close to some of nature’s most delicate and fascinating creatures. This lush, climate-controlled exhibit is home to hundreds of butterflies from around the world, including species from North America, Central and South America, Africa, India, China, and Southeast Asia.

As you walk through the Pavilion, you’ll find yourself surrounded by butterflies fluttering freely among tropical plants and flowers. The space is kept at a warm 80 degrees Fahrenheit with high humidity to mimic the natural environments these butterflies thrive in. If you’re lucky, one may even land on you, offering a truly up-close encounter.

For families with young children, strollers are not permitted inside the Pavilion, but kids are welcome to explore on foot or be carried. The exhibit is wheelchair accessible.

The International Spy Museum

The International Spy Museum in Washington, DC is an exciting, interactive experience that brings the world of espionage to life. Unlike traditional museums, this one fully immerses visitors in the covert world of spies, offering hands-on activities, real-life spy artifacts, and thrilling undercover missions. It’s a must-visit for anyone fascinated by espionage, secret codes, and the daring operations of spies throughout history.

One of the highlights of the museum is its interactive missions, where visitors assume a cover identity, test their memory, and complete various challenges just like real spies. Kids (and adults!) can try their hand at codebreaking, laser dodging, and disguises, making it a thrilling experience from start to finish. The museum also houses an impressive collection of gadgets used by spies, including tiny hidden cameras, microdots, and even a lipstick pistol.

While the museum is highly engaging for all ages, it’s best suited for kids ages 9 and up due to the complexity of some exhibits and the immersive nature of the experience. Younger children might find some of the missions too challenging or the historical content less engaging. Because of this, we decided to skip it on our recent family trip, but we’re definitely planning a return visit when they’re older. Read more about if this would be the right spot for your kids under 9 here.

For families with older kids or anyone who loves mysteries, espionage, or history, the International Spy Museum is one of the best things to do in DC with kids. It’s an action-packed adventure filled with surprises, making visitors feel like real secret agents from the moment they walk in. If you’re looking for an exciting and unique activity in DC, this museum should definitely be on your list!

Washington, DC is one of the best destinations for families, and the best part? You don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy it! The nation’s capital is packed with incredible museums, interactive exhibits, scenic parks, and historic landmarks—many at no cost. Whether you’re visiting for a weekend or planning a longer stay, there are plenty of fun and educational activities to keep your little ones entertained without breaking the bank.

This guide covers the best free things to do in DC with kids. Get ready for a wallet-friendly family adventure filled with history, discovery, and hands-on fun!

National Air and Space Museum

One of the best free things to do in DC with Kids, in our opinion, is the National Air and Space Museum. We all really enjoyed both the Wright Brothers & the Invention of the Aerial Age exhibit, celebrating human flight, and the Kenneth C. Griffin Exploring the Planets Gallery that highlights space exploration. My kids were especially captivated by the space artifacts, like Neil Armstrong’s Apollo 11 spacesuit and the Apollo 11 Command Module, which made space travel feel so real. They also loved seeing the 1903 Wright Flyer—the very first successful airplane!

What made the visit even more fun were the interactive simulations scattered throughout the exhibits, where you could touch and explore exhibits, bringing them to life. The kids enjoyed helping orchestrate the first flight, building solar systems, and launching virtual aircraft like blimps, helicopters, and hot air balloons. They even got to design their own spaceship—all through computer simulations. We also spent time marveling at rockets, gliders, and the Starship Enterprise model from Star Trek. The museum is a perfect blend of education and excitement.

Another highlight here was the Planetarium show Dark Universe, narrated by Neil deGrasse Tyson. Dark Universe is an exploration of the unseen forces shaping our cosmos. The show uncovers the mysteries of dark matter and dark energy, which together make up 95% of the universe. The presentation was truly fascinating–even my husband, who usually falls asleep in planetariums, stayed awake and enjoyed it!

If your family enjoys aviation museums as much as ours does, you’ll also love learning about these two that we recently visited:

National Museum of Natural History

The National Museum of Natural History is the world’s most visited natural history museum, inviting families to explore the wonders of our planet, past and present. With exhibits like the Hall of Human Origins, National Fossil Hall, and Ocean Hall, plus highlights like Egyptian mummies and the famous Hope Diamond, there’s something to fascinate both kids and adults. Families will especially enjoy interactive areas like the O. Orkin Insect Zoo and Butterfly Pavilion (for a small fee).

The animal sections are always a great draw for us at natural history museums, so we especially loved:

Sant Ocean Hall for its centerpiece—a life-size, 45-foot model of a North Atlantic right whale—alongside fascinating exhibits like giant squids, a living coral reef, and a massive set of jaws from the extinct Megalodon shark.

Another section that sparked the kids’ imaginations was the Cellphone: Unseen Connections exhibit, open through 2026. Unseen Connections is an engaging exhibit that uncovers the hidden stories behind cell phones, exploring their impact on science, art, technology, and society. It reveals how this technology has transformed human culture and global communication. My husband and I enjoyed seeing some of the really old cell phones from our youth, and my older son especially loved the interactive screens where you could become an emoji. My kids are too young to use cell phones themselves, so this was one of their first experiences with a technology that will undoubtedly play a huge role in their futures.

We adults all really enjoyed the same exhibits as the kids, but another highlight for me was seeing the Hope Diamond. This incredible 45.52-carat deep blue gem, is one of the most famous jewels in the world, renowned for its beauty, rich history, and legendary allure. It’s taken a fascinating journey through centuries of royal ownership and thefts, and remains a symbol of elegance and intrigue. My fellow Millennials will recognize it from the movie Titanic, as the movie’s famous heart of the ocean necklace was modeled after it.

A few notes about crowds and timing: We visited the National Museum of Natural History during a holiday weekend, and it was very crowded. If you are visiting during high tourist seasons, I recommend trying to visit on a weekday. Due to its free entry, this museum will always be popular among visitors and locals.

National Museum of the American Indian

The National Museum of the American Indian celebrates the rich and diverse cultures of Native peoples across the Western Hemisphere. Located on the National Mall in Washington, DC, the museum features expansive exhibits of Native artifacts, art, and stories, with spaces for performances, educational programs, and family-friendly activities. It’s a meaningful place to learn about Native histories and traditions, past and present, through immersive galleries and interactive displays. Families will appreciate the engaging, respectful storytelling that makes it accessible and enriching for all ages.

This museum has a little more of a mature feel to it, offering mostly exhibits that would be more appropriate for older kids and adults, but for kids 10 and under, you don’t want to miss the imagiNATIONS Activity Center. The imagiNATIONS Activity Center offers an interactive, family-friendly space where kids can explore the creativity and ingenuity of Indigenous cultures through hands-on activities. The space is separate and closed off, so kids can discover the origins of everyday innovations that came from Native cultures, from skateboards and kayaks.

Before entering, you need to pick up a free timed-entry ticket, and each group gets 30 minutes to explore. This felt quite short to us since there was so much that the kids wanted to see and explore like igloo building, basket weaving, learning about snowshoes and toboggans, and more. Be aware that this area is open to babies in addition to older kids, so you’ll want to keep an eye on both.

Outside of the children’s section, we adults really enjoyed Sublime Light: Tapestry Art of DY Begay, which is a stunning exhibit showcasing the vibrant, modern tapestries of Diné artist DY Begay, inspired by her Navajo heritage and homeland. I was fascinated by how she dyes fibers using natural materials like onion skins, creating rich, expressive colors that bring her abstract designs to life (on display through July 13, 2025).

I also really enjoyed The True Story of Pocahontas. This section reveals her life as an 11-year-old girl, forced into baptism and marriage, contrasting sharply with the myths popularized in media, especially the Pocahontas we know from Disney movies. The exhibit separates her life into two timelines—her real history and her legacy—and features portraits of her that highlight the contrast between reality and her fictionalized image. This experience is designed for ages 13 and up.

The True Story of Pocahontas is housed within the Americans exhibit that examines how Native American images and stories have shaped American pop culture, from movies to logos, often perpetuating stereotypes. This section is difficult to confront as an American, but it’s essential for understanding the injustices of the past, so we can move toward a more equitable future.

Don’t miss “The Invention of Thanksgiving” video, also in this section, narrated by museum curator Paul Chaat Smith, a member of Comanche Nation. The video examines how the stories of Thanksgiving developed and what they mean in American culture. This video felt really important to absorb as an American. You can view the full video here to decide if your children are the right age to receive this message; however, it’s essential viewing for adults.

US Botanical Gardens

The US Botanical Gardens, on the grounds of the United States Capitol, is a perfect spot for families to explore nature, history, and science—all for free! As the oldest continuously operating public garden in the country, it’s a living museum that brings George Washington’s vision of a botanic garden to life. With lush plants from around the world and interactive exhibits, it’s an educational and enjoyable experience for all ages. Our kids particularly enjoyed exploring the prehistoric plants from the ages of dinosaurs and the funny shapes and textures of the many cacti. They also loved the seasonal miniature train exhibit, which operates outdoors annually from November through January.

Since he’s learning to write at school, my older son also loved adding his note to the “What Tastes Like Home?” wall, an interactive display that invites visitors to jot down a food that reminds them of home on a sticky note. The notes are added to the wall, highlighting the diverse culinary experiences people associate with “home”. The wall is part of the new exhibit “Cultivate: Growing Food in a Changing World.”

My personal favorite was the Virginia Haldan Tropical House, a lush tropical paradise with exotic plants, a serene pond, and a stunning living wall. It’s fully accessible, so you can easily bring a stroller throughout. We loved exploring the displays, especially the chocolate and vanilla plants, and the extra warmth to keep the temperatures tropical for the plants made it a nice break from the outdoor weather.

U.S. Capitol

The U.S. Capitol stands as a historic landmark in Washington, DC, recognized for its striking architecture and long-standing role in the country’s government. We took in the view from the outside, taking in its unique design and presence in the cityscape. Whether you’re interested in architecture, history, or simply exploring, it’s a notable stop on any DC itinerary. The outside offers some great photo opps of the Capitol building and the Washington Monument right across the small lake. Our kids especially loved watching the ducks in the lake and running through the expansive lawns adjacent to the Capitol building.

Be aware of tourists feeding the ducks–there are seagulls and pigeons that swarm when this happens, which scared our 4 year old a little bit.

No Washington, DC itinerary is complete without at least catching a glimpse of this iconic landmark. While public tours require advance planning, visitors can still view it from several vantage points. Lafayette Square offers a classic view of the north side, while the Ellipse provides a look at the south lawn. Keep in mind that both of these can be significantly fenced off based on the plans of the President.

You can’t leave Washington, DC without visiting some of its most iconic monuments and memorials. They’re mostly located along the National Mall and are must-sees for families looking to explore history in an engaging way. If you’re searching for free things to do in DC with kids, these monuments memorials offer a meaningful and educational experience that’s both awe-inspiring and family-friendly.

All have no fees or reservations associated. You can show up at any time. While we usually visit during the day, they can be a really spectacular lit up at night, and the crowds are significantly smaller.

Jefferson Memorial

Sitting along the Tidal Basin, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial is a tribute to one of the Founding Fathers and the author of the Declaration of Independence. The domed structure offers stunning views of the water, and in the spring, it’s one of the best places to see cherry blossoms in full bloom. Kids will love running up the steps and exploring the rotunda, where a 19-foot statue of Jefferson stands beneath inspiring inscriptions from his writings.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial is a powerful tribute to the renowned civil rights leader. The striking 30-foot stone statue of Dr. King emerges from a “mountain of despair,” inspired by his famous words: “Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope.” Around the memorial, you’ll find a peaceful reflection area adjacent to the river, and a wall of inspirational quotes from his speeches. This is a great place to talk to kids about history, justice, and equality in an accessible way.

A lot of people skip Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial or don’t even know it’s there because it’s off the path a little, but I think it’s a must-see. It’s very impactful and the setting is lovely right on the river.

Washington, DC is famous for its stunning cherry blossoms, which transform the nation’s capital into a breathtaking sea of pink and white every spring. Each year, thousands of visitors travel to see the Washington, DC’s cherry blossoms, making it one of the most anticipated seasonal events in the country. Whether you’re visiting for the first time with your family or you’re a regular cherry blossom peeper, this guide has everything you need to plan the perfect cherry blossom experience.

History of the Washington, DC Cherry Blossoms

The history of the Washington, DC cherry blossoms dates back to 1912, when Japan gifted 3,000 cherry trees to the United States as a symbol of friendship. These trees were planted along the Tidal Basin, near the National Mall, and have since become one of the most iconic features of the city’s landscape.

However, what many people don’t know is that this wasn’t the first attempt to bring cherry blossoms to DC. The first donation of 2,000 trees, received in 1910, had to be destroyed because they were infested with insects. After hearing about the unfortunate loss of the trees, the mayor of Tokyo sent another batch—3,020 trees—in 1912, which successfully took root and became the cherished blooms we see today.

The first National Cherry Blossom Festival was held in 1935, and today, it has grown into a multi-week celebration featuring parades, cultural performances, and special events. The festival highlights the cultural connection between the US and Japan while showcasing the beauty of the cherry trees in full bloom.

Best Places to See the Washington, DC Cherry Blossoms

The Tidal Basin is the most famous spot to view the Washington, DC cherry blossoms, and there are several other beautiful locations in the city where you can enjoy them.

1. Tidal Basin

The Tidal Basin is home to the largest collection of cherry trees in DC, and its location surrounded by the monuments makes it an incredible place to take photos. The reflections of the blossoms in the water add an extra layer of beauty to the experience. It’s also the best spot for that iconic family photo, and 7:00am stroller runs before the crowds peak.

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="682" src="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/cherry-blossom-01-1024x682.jpg" alt="Cherry blossoms in full bloom frame the view of the Jefferson Memorial across the Tidal Basin with rippling water and blue skies.
2. National Mall

Cherry trees are scattered around the National Mall, offering picturesque views with famous monuments like the Washington Monument and the US Capitol as backdrops.

3. East Potomac Park (Hains Point)

This lesser-known spot is a great alternative if you want to escape the heavy crowds. The park features long rows of cherry trees lining the Potomac River, creating a peaceful environment. This is a great spot for kids to scooter or bike because of the wide, paved 4-mile loop.

While the white Yoshino trees at the Tidal Basin peak first, East Potomac Park is home to the Kwanzan trees. These are deep pink and fluffy (like carnations) and usually bloom about two weeks later, giving you a second chance at the magic.

4. Kenwood, Maryland

Located just outside of DC, the Kenwood neighborhood is famous for its cherry blossoms, with hundreds of trees lining its quiet suburban streets.

5. National Arboretum

If you’re into art and hidden gems, you don’t want to miss the National Arboretum. The Capitol Columns and the koi pond as a great “crowd-free” alternative for families.

6. Stanton Park

This park has playground right in the center of the blossoms, a perfect “bribery” spot for kids who are tired of looking at trees. It’s well-known among locals and will add a much less touristy feel to your day.

How to Get to the Washington, DC Cherry Blossoms

Since cherry blossom season attracts thousands of visitors, navigating the city efficiently is key to enjoying your experience without unnecessary stress.

Public Transportation

The best way to reach the cherry blossoms is by using DC’s Metrorail system. The closest Metro stations to the Tidal Basin are:

Smithsonian Station (Orange, Blue, and Silver lines) – A short walk from the Tidal Basin

L’Enfant Plaza Station (Yellow, Green, Orange, Blue, and Silver lines) – Another good option with a slightly longer walk

Federal Triangle Station (Orange, Blue, and Silver lines) – Located near the National Mall.

Driving & Parking

Driving in DC during cherry blossom season can be challenging due to heavy traffic and limited parking. If you must drive, consider using parking garages in downtown DC and then walking or using a ride-share service to reach the blossoms.

<img decoding="async" width="1280" height="1526" src="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/cherry-blossom-02-e1740623378594.jpg" alt="The Washington Monument stands tall against a bright blue sky, surrounded by cherry blossom trees with soft pink and white flowers.
Staying Close to the Cherry Blossoms

One of the best ways to maximize your time enjoying the cherry blossoms is by staying in a hotel near the main viewing areas. This allows you to avoid the hassle of transportation and simply walk to the best spots early in the morning or later in the evening when crowds are lighter.

On our last trip to DC we stayed at Grand Hyatt Washington, which is about a 30-minute walk from the Tidal Basin or you can take a short Metro ride and walk from there.

Other great hotel options near the cherry blossoms include:

JW Marriott Washington, DC – A 15-minute walk to the Tidal Basin

We enjoyed a wonderful and kid-friendly lunch at the hotel’s onsite restaurant Café du Parc on our last visit.

By staying within walking distance, you’ll get to experience the cherry blossoms at their most peaceful moments and won’t have to worry about finding parking or dealing with traffic.

Best Times to Visit the Washington, DC Cherry Blossoms

Timing your visit correctly can make a big difference in your experience. Every year, the National Park Service predicts peak bloom, which is the time when at least 70% of the cherry blossoms are open. This period display typically occurs between late March and early April, but the exact timing depends heavily on weather conditions.

Forecasting peak bloom is almost impossible more than 10 days in advance, as factors like temperature fluctuations, rainfall, and wind can all impact when the blossoms reach their fullest beauty. You can track the annual peak bloom predictions to plan your travel as close as possible on the National Parks Service website and the DC Cherry Blossom Watch website.

Early Morning Visits

For the best photos and fewer crowds, arrive early in the morning—ideally before 8 am. The soft morning light makes the blossoms glow, and you’ll have a peaceful moment.

Weekday Visits

Weekends bring massive crowds, so if possible, plan your visit for a weekday.

Sunset Views

The cherry blossoms look magical at sunset, especially around the Tidal Basin.

Post-Peak

Didn’t catch the 48-hour Peak? Don’t sweat it! The week after peak is actually my favorite for families. This is “Petal Blizzard” season where the ground turns into pink snow—it’s much more fun for kids to play in, and the crowds are 50% smaller!

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="682" src="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/cherry-blossom-11-1024x682.jpg" alt="A close-up view of cherry blossoms in full bloom, with soft pink petals densely covering dark branches against a slightly cloudy sky.
The National Cherry Blossom Festival is the highlight of spring in DC, featuring a variety of events. The Festival typically takes place from the end of March to the middle of April. The festival dates change each year based on the estimated peak bloom period, which varies depending on weather conditions.

Check the bloom forecast – Keep an eye on the National Park Service’s bloom predictions to plan your visit at the perfect time.

Dress in layers – Spring weather in DC can be unpredictable, so bring a jacket.

Wear comfortable shoes – You’ll be walking a lot, so comfortable shoes are essential.

Bring a camera – The cherry blossoms make for incredible photos, so don’t forget your camera or phone.

Be respectful – Avoid picking the blossoms or climbing the trees. Let everyone enjoy their beauty.

Safety Tips for Cherry Blossom Season with Kids

Visiting the Washington, DC cherry blossoms with young kids can be a great experience, but crowded events require a little extra planning. Kids are natural explorers, and in busy areas like the Tidal Basin, it’s easy for them to wander off or become overwhelmed. However, with the right precautions, you can enjoy the blossoms stress-free while keeping your kids safe.

1. Keep a Close Eye on Little Ones

With so many people around, it’s easy for small children to get lost in the crowd. ID bracelets and anti-lost wrist links can provide peace of mind and an added layer of safety. These tools are simple yet highly effective in ensuring you and your kids stay connected, even in overwhelming environments.

AirTags

AirTags are small, powerful tracking devices that are a lifesaver when it comes to minimizing the stress of misplacing essential items or even ensuring extra safety for your child. Make sure your AirTags are properly registered and synced to your device before you travel.

AirTags holders

To make the most of AirTags, pair them with sturdy and secure holders. These are great for clipping onto your child’s clothes, and these are good to tie on shoelaces, ensuring the AirTag stays with them while they move around.

2. Use a Stroller or Carrier

While little ones love to explore, their legs can tire quickly. A lightweight stroller is great for navigating crowds, but a baby carrier may be a better option if you want more mobility on uneven paths. Here’s our recommended lightweight double stroller we travel with and this is our favorite carrier. If you’re walking around too all of the monuments, keep in mind that even older kids might benefit from a stroller ride.

3. Dress Kids in Bright Colors

Put your child in a bright or unique outfit so they’re easy to spot in a crowd. Taking a quick photo of them before you head out can also help if they get lost. Our sons both have this jacket in red, making them easier to spot in a crowd.

4. Set a Meeting Spot

If your child is old enough to understand, choose a designated meeting point in case you get separated. Point out landmarks or large signs they can recognize, and teach them about safe people like police officers, who both walk and ride horses throughout the Tidal Basin area.

5. Use Identification Bands

Write your name and phone number on a child ID bracelet or temporary tattoo, so that someone can contact you quickly if they wander off. These are reusable, and we also have our boys wear them on Disney trips. We’ve also taught our older son my phone number in case of emergencies.

6. Bring Snacks and Water

Cherry blossom season can mean long walks and unpredictable weather. Keep snacks, water, and a few small toys on hand to keep kids happy during breaks. There are virtually no places to eat in and around the Tidal Basin, so it’s quite a far walk out of your way if someone gets hangry.

7. Avoid Peak Crowds

Try visiting early in the morning or on weekdays to avoid the largest crowds. It’s easier to manage kids when they have space to roam without getting lost in a sea of visitors.

8. Be Mindful Near the Water

The Tidal Basin and Potomac River have beautiful views, but the waterfront areas lack protective barriers in some spots. Keep a firm grip on little hands when walking near the edges.

With a little preparation, you and your family can enjoy the Washington, DC cherry blossoms safely and make unforgettable memories together!

Final Thoughts

Visiting the Washington, DC cherry blossoms is an experience that should be on every traveler’s bucket list. Whether you’re admiring the blooms around the Tidal Basin, checking out the National Cherry Blossom Festival, or simply taking in the scenery from a quiet park, this annual event showcases the best of spring in the nation’s capital. Plan ahead, arrive early, and enjoy one of the most breathtaking natural spectacles in the United States.

If the kids need a break from the wind, duck into the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden. It’s free, right on the Mall, and the massive outdoor sculptures are basically a giant art playground surrounded by blooms.

Finding the best Washington, DC restaurants for families—that offer great food and a welcoming atmosphere for kids—can make all the difference in your trip.

On our recent trip to DC, we found great, family-friendly dining spots that catered to both adults and children. From museum cafés to casual pizzerias, we went to some fantastic places that made our trip even more enjoyable. Here’s our ultimate guide to the best Washington, DC restaurants for families!

Best DC Restaurants for Families for Lunch

National Museum of the American Indian

One of the best-kept secrets in DC is the Mitsitam Native Foods Café at the National Museum of the American Indian. A local recommended it to us, and we were so glad we took their advice! Unlike most museum cafeterias that serve typical fast food, Mitsitam features an incredible variety of Indigenous cuisine from North and South America.

I opted for an Alaskan-inspired dish with salmon and beet salad, while our au pair tried a fry bread dish from the American Southwest. My husband and kids picked Mexican and South American dishes, so it was a fun way to explore different cultures through food. The desserts were also delicious!

While the prices were a little higher than a standard museum cafeteria, the experience was absolutely worth it. If you’re looking for a unique dining experience that is also family-friendly, this is a great option.

Location: National Museum of the American Indian, 4th Street SW

Open Times: 11:00 am to 3:00 pm from Sunday to Friday, 11:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturdays.

Inside the museum, you’ll also find the Espresso Bar. It is a great spot for a quick bite, offering a variety of Native-inspired food options like pozole, chili, hatch green chile corn muffins, wild rice salad, and sandwiches. You can also grab pastries and desserts. It’s open daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Café du Parc

If you’re in the mood for something a little more elegant but still kid-friendly, Café du Parc is a nice choice. We stumbled upon this French restaurant last minute and were able to grab a reservation on OpenTable. The restaurant is inside a beautiful hotel, and the setting made for a nice, relaxing lunch after a busy morning.

They also have a kids’ menu, and they provided crayons and coloring pages, which helped keep the kids busy. The food was great. I highly recommend the crab cakes, and my husband enjoyed his burger.

Old Ebbitt Grill

For our final lunch in Washington, DC, we decided to dine at Old Ebbitt Grill, one of the city’s most iconic and historic restaurants. This place is enormous and well-known, attracting both locals and tourists alike. With its classic American menu and lively atmosphere, it’s no surprise that it’s a popular dining spot.

Since it was a holiday weekend, the restaurant was packed, and we walked into what felt like total chaos! But despite the crowd, the staff handled everything efficiently. We didn’t have a reservation, so we were a bit concerned about the wait time. They quoted us a 20-minute wait, which seemed reasonable given the number of people, but to our surprise, we were seated in just five minutes!

The menu at Old Ebbitt Grill is extensive, offering everything from fresh seafood and burgers to salads and classic comfort food. The nice setting, combined with quick and friendly service, made it a great choice for our last meal in DC.

If you’re planning to eat here, making a reservation in advance is highly recommended, especially on weekends or holidays. However, if you do walk in, the wait times may not be as long as they seem.

Best DC Restaurants for Families for Dinner

Pisco y Nazca Ceviche Gastrobar

Our first dinner in Washington, DC was Pisco y Nazca Ceviche Gastrobar, a fantastic Peruvian restaurant. Our entire family loves fish, so we knew we were in for a treat! Their menu was extensive, featuring everything from fresh ceviche to classic Peruvian dishes. For those that don’t enjoy fish, there are also many chicken and meat dishes.

Pisco y Nazca also has a kids’ menu including familiar dishes like chicken tenders and pasta, which is great for little picky eaters who may not enjoy trying something new. The restaurant provided the boys with crayons and coloring pages, which kept them entertained while we all enjoyed our meals. The service was excellent, and the atmosphere was lively yet family-friendly.

Gordon Ramsay Street Pizza

One night, we were completely exhausted from our day of sightseeing, so we were glad we had planned something casual and easy—Gordon Ramsay Street Pizza.

This spot turned out to be a fantastic choice for families, though we quickly learned that reservations are a must! Even with a reservation, we had to wait nearly 30 minutes for a table, so make sure you plan ahead. Despite the wait, we still think this is a great choice for families.

The restaurant is kid-friendly, with a kids’ menu and coloring pages available. The pizza was delicious—crispy crust, fresh toppings, and a variety of flavors to choose from. Our kids loved it, and we appreciated that the atmosphere was relaxed enough for a family meal.

Dinner at Capitol City Brewing Company

(Unfortunately as of August 28th, 2025 this place is permanently closed). For our final dinner in DC, we visited Capitol City Brewing Company, which was conveniently located near our hotel. This was another casual, kid-friendly option that turned out to be a great choice. The restaurant had a laid-back atmosphere, and they provided coloring pages and a kids’ menu, making it a stress-free meal for parents.

The food was classic American fare—burgers, salads, and hearty entrees. Everyone was able to find something they truly enjoyed.

If you’re looking for more DC restaurants for families, there are plenty of options to suit every taste and dining preference. We didn’t get the chance to go to these places on this trip, but they made our short-list for offering a welcoming environment for kids.

One of the most popular DC restaurants for families, Founding Farmers is famous for its delicious brunch and farm-to-table dining experience. The menu features fresh, locally sourced ingredients, and kids will love the selection of homemade pancakes, waffles, and fresh fruit smoothies. My husband and I dined here for brunch while I was pregnant with my oldest, and it was truly a wonderful experience.

The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, making it an excellent choice for families with young children. The restaurant offers many “kid-approved” items on its regular menus, and the service team is happy to assist in selecting the best options for children. Parents will love the wholesome, made-from-scratch dishes. Be sure to make a reservation in advance—this spot is always busy, especially on weekends!

Now, let’s dive into our Washington, DC Itinerary!

Washington, DC Itinerary Day 1

Arrival & Check-In

We arrived in Washington, DC and checked into the Grand Hyatt Washington, which is an excellent choice for families. It’s centrally located, with some of the top tourist attractions within walking distance, and others are a short Metro ride away. Using Hyatt rewards, we booked a standard room with club lounge access, which offered us free breakfast, dinner hors d’ourves, coffee, water, tea, soft drinks, juices, snacks, beer, daytime snacks, and a dessert buffet daily. After settling in, we were ready to explore!

<img decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/washington-dc-02-683x1024.jpg" alt="An upward view of a hotel atrium with a glass roof, featuring multiple floors and suspended lights.
National Building Museum

We started at the The National Building Museum, which we mainly chose for the “Brick City” exhibit, perfect for our little LEGO® lovers. This display featured Lego recreations of famous buildings from around the world, such as the Empire State Building, the Colosseum, and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The hands-on section, where visitors could build on both a table and a wall, was also very fun to experience. Another favorite was the “Building Stories” section downstairs, a children’s storybook-themed area.

US Capitol

After visiting the museum, we walked over to the US Capitol, which is a historic landmark in Washington, DC, known for its distinctive dome and neoclassical architecture. We viewed it from the outside, taking in its design and presence in the cityscape. For those exploring DC, it’s a notable stop with a long history.

If you want to explore inside, you can book a guided tour here:

US Botanical Gardens

Next in our Washington, DC Itinerary was the US Botanical Gardens. We arrived here towards the end of the day and explored for about two hours. We loved that the admission was free, and there was a lot for both kids and adults to enjoy. Both of our kids loved the prehistoric plants, quirky cacti, and seasonal miniature train exhibit, while my older son enjoyed adding his note to the interactive What Tastes Like Home? wall. My personal favorite was the lush, stroller-friendly Virginia Haldan Tropical House, where we explored exotic plants like chocolate and vanilla.

<img decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/washington-dc-05-683x1024.jpg" alt="A mother and her two young sons smiling in front of a model of the U.S. Capitol surrounded by poinsettias.
Dinner at Pisco y Nazca Ceviche Gastrobar

We finished the night with dinner at Pisco y Nazca Ceviche Gastrobar, which was one of our favorite meals of the trip. Pisco y Nazca serves peruvian food, which we all enjoyed because our family all loves fish. The menu is pretty extensive and includes a kids menu and meat dishes if you’re not into fish. They also offered crayons and coloring pages that kept our kids entertained. Read more about some of our favorite kid-friendly restaurants in DC here.

Washington, DC Itinerary Day 2

National Air and Space Museum

We started the day at the National Air and Space Museum, which ended up beinging another trip favorite, especially the space exhibits and planetarium show Dark Universe. The kids were amazed by the Wright brothers’ story and the 1903 Wright Flyer, while the interactive exhibits made history come alive. Seeing real spacecraft up close gave us a new appreciation for the scale of astronaut life. The hands-on simulations were a huge hit, letting the kids explore aviation and space in a fun way.

Lunch at the National Museum of the American Indian

We got a tip from a DC local to go to the National Museum of the American Indian for lunch, and the cafeteria was amazing! While it was a little pricier than a typical museum cafeteria (more closely priced to a restaurant), they had a huge variety of dishes that were not the typical chicken fingers you’d expect.

I had an Alaskan inspired dish—salmon and beet salad; our au pair got a fry bread dish from the American Southwest, and my husband and the kids all got Mexican/South American dishes. We loved how they represented all of the Native American cultural dishes from Canada town through South America. The desserts were also really good, so don’t miss the expansive dessert display!

Exploring the National Museum of the American Indian

After lunch, we continued our DC itinerary and headed into the museum to explore. The National Museum of the American Indian showcases the rich and diverse cultures of Native peoples, with exhibits best suited for older kids and adults, though the imagiNATIONS Activity Center (free with a timed ticket) is great for younger visitors.

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="682" src="https://marionthemap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/washington-dc-18-1024x682.jpg" alt="Two boys seated in a red kayak in an interactive exhibit simulating traditional boat paddling on the water.
I personally found the textile exhibit fascinating, especially the natural dye materials like onion skins, and the Pocahontas section, which explored her full story through various artistic portrayals, including Disney. The Invention of Thanksgiving video, narrated by curator Paul Chaat Smith, was a powerful look at the myths surrounding the holiday—you can watch it here to decide if it’s right for your kids. Another thought-provoking exhibit examined Native American portrayals in media.

National Museum of Natural History

After we finished at the National Museum of the American Indian, we took a short walk through the National Mall over to the National Museum of Natural History. The National Museum of Natural History is packed with fascinating exhibits, from dinosaur fossils and life-sized mammals to Egyptian mummies and the famous Hope Diamond.

Since we visited on a holiday weekend, it was extra crowded, but we were still able to their favorites—the dinosaur section, mammal hall, and a cell phone exhibit that gave them a first glimpse at a technology they’ll eventually use daily. We adults loved the same exhibits as the kids, and the Hope Diamond and Egyptian section were personal highlights for me. Unfortunately, the butterfly exhibit was closed, but luckily, I had experienced it before. I hope the kids get to enjoy it on a future trip (it requires a small entry fee). Read more about the Butterfly Pavilion here.

Dinner at Gordon Ramsay Street Pizza

By dinner time, we were very tired from all the walking and exploring we did on this full day, so we decided to eat at Gordon Ramsay Street Pizza. This casual, kid-friendly spot serves up delicious pizzas and some pasta dishes that were a hit with our whole group. Make sure you plan ahead with a reservation here. We still had to wait 30 minutes even with one, so it can get quite crowded.

Washington, DC Itinerary Day 3

Walk by the White House

We started the day with a stroll by the White House, which is a must-see landmark in any Washington, DC itinerary. Lafayette Square offers a view of the north side, while the Ellipse overlooks the south lawn, though access may vary due to security. US citizens can request a tour through their congressional representative at least 21 days in advance, with better chances during low tourist seasons. Tours are first-come, first-served and subject to availability. For details, visit house.gov or senate.gov.

Thomas Jefferson Memorial

Following the White House, we walked along the east Tidal Basin to our first true monument of the day, the Jefferson Memorial. Overlooking the Tidal Basin, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial honors the Founding Father and Declaration of Independence author. Its grand dome frames breathtaking waterfront views, especially during cherry blossom season. Our kids lovesd racing up the steps and exploring the rotunda, where a towering Jefferson statue stands beneath inscriptions from his writings.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial

Next in our DC itinerary, we opted to walk the 20 minutes along the scenic route to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial honors the civil rights leader with a powerful 30-foot statue emerging from a “mountain of despair,” symbolizing hope. Surrounded by a peaceful reflection area and a wall of his inspiring quotes, it’s a great spot to discuss justice and equality with kids. Though it’s a bit off the main path, this memorial’s serene riverside setting and profound message make it a must-see. The walk is absolutely beautiful in the warm weather and another ideal spot for cherry blossom peeping, when they’re in bloom.

Lincoln Memorial

We continued on another short walk to catch a glimpse of #16 a the Lincoln Memorial. Visiting the Lincoln Memorial with kids is a great way to connect them to history in a meaningful way. The monument’s impressive size captured our kids’ attention, as they stepped inside to gaze up at Lincoln’s iconic statue. The surrounding Reflecting Pool and the steps leading up to the memorial provided plenty of space for running around, making it a nice spot to take a break and enjoy some fresh air. When we visited, the steps out front also included a massive ramp, making this an easy visit with our stroller.

Washington Monument

Our final stop on the monument walk was the Washington Monument. Visiting the Washington Monument with kids is an unforgettable experience, especially when you see their faces light up as they look up at its towering height. The whole area around the monument is perfect for a family stroll, with plenty of green space for kids to run around. You can also take the elevator to the top for sweeping views of the National Mall, which is an exciting way for kids to see the city from a new perspective. Though we weren’t able to snag tickets this time, it’s definitely on our list for when we visit again.

The Memorials have no fees or reservations associated with a visit.

Lunch at Cafe du Parc

After a super busy morning, we grabbed a late lunch reservation at at Cafe du Parc. It’s a cozy spot for a family-friendly meal, offering a charming French-inspired menu, plus a kids menu. We lingered here for a bit before heading back to our hotel to rest before dinner.

Dinner at Capitol City Brewing Company

We met up with some friends this evening at Capitol City Brewing Company, which we chose at the last minute for its close proximity to our hotel and for its diverse menu, including a variety of craft beers. The casual vibe made it easy to hang out, and their food menu had kid-friendly options like pizza and burgers. It’s a great spot to take a breather after a day of sightseeing and grab a bite in a laid-back setting. Unfortunately as of August 28th, 2025 this place is permanently closed.

Washington, DC Itinerary Day 4

National Children’s Museum

Before heading out for the road trip home, we visited the National Children’s Museum in hopes of wearing the kids out a little, so they’d sleep in the car.

The top highlights for our kids were the three-story Dream Machine climbing structure, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, and Paw Patrol Adventure Bay, where kids can take on interactive missions. The Tinkerers Studio also sparked their creativity with building and engineering activities.

While it’s a fun spot for kids, the museum can get chaotic, and we found it a little challenging to keep our eyes on the kids in the Dream Machine at all times. Despite this, everyone had fun.

Lunch at Old Ebbitt Grill

On a whim, we popped over to Old Ebbitt Grill, hoping we could snag a table. It’s quite famous, so we thought it might be super crowded—and it was! However, we were quoted a 20-minute wait, and only ended up waiting five. It’s massive inside, so it seems they do a good job of turning the tables over. The historic restaurant has been a local favorite since 1856 and has a cozy, old-school atmosphere, often attracting both locals and tourists. It was a great spot for a hearty meal before we got on the road.

Additional Activities and Recommendations
