Some Considerations Before your Trip

When is the Best Time of Year to Visit Oahu with Kids?

Oahu can get quite crowded, so be ready for traffic and busy spots at high season. To avoid the crowds, consider visiting during the “shoulder season,” which includes April, May, September, and October. These months offer great weather and fewer tourists, making for a more relaxed experience. If you’re interested in whale watching, plan your trip between January and March, when humpback whales are often seen off the coast. This way, you can enjoy both a quieter island and the chance to see whales in their natural habitat. We visited in February and got to watch whales from the shore on several days of our trip!

Where should you stay?

During our visit to Oahu, we stayed at the Hyatt Place Waikiki, which we found to be an excellent choice for families. The hotel’s location is ideal, just a short walk from Waikiki Beach and near several shops and restaurants. This allowed us to explore the area easily on foot.

Our room was spacious, with two queen beds and a separate living area with a foldout couch that provided plenty of space for our family of four (the rooms sleep up to six). The highlight was our Mountain View room. Waking up to the views of Diamond Head Crater was a beautiful way to start each day. The hotel also offers a range of amenities perfect for families, including free daily breakfast, an outdoor pool, and complimentary Wi-Fi, making it a comfortable base for our adventures.

The Hyatt Place Waikiki also features a 24/7 fitness center and provides facilities like computers for public use, event spaces, and a lobby bar with food and drink options. They welcome pets, have a laundry service available, and offer paid parking, which was convenient for our needs. This combination of location, comfort, and family-friendly amenities made the Hyatt Place Waikiki an ideal choice for our stay in Oahu.

Having a car gives you flexibility, allowing you to explore at your own pace, easily carry any essentials, and avoid the hassle of waiting for buses. Hanauma Bay, located on the southeastern coast of Oahu, is a protected marine life conservation area that offers an incredible snorkeling experience for families. The calm, clear waters are perfect for beginners and young children, making it an ideal spot for a family snorkeling adventure. Here, you can swim among colorful tropical fish and coral reefs while learning about marine conservation. The Bay’s calm waters are sheltered by cliffs and reefs, making it safe for children and providing a fantastic introduction to the underwater world.

When visiting Hanauma Bay, it’s essential to plan ahead due to its popularity and conservation measures. Tickets must be purchased online 48 hours in advance, and parking is limited, so arriving early is crucial. Remember to bring reef-safe sunscreen, water, snacks, and snorkeling gear to make the most of your visit. 4. Diamond Head Hike

The Diamond Head hike is one of the most iconic hikes on Oahu, offering spectacular views of Honolulu and the Pacific Ocean. This 1.6-mile round-trip hike up Diamond Head Crater is moderately challenging, with steep inclines, switchbacks, and a few staircases. It’s a great choice for families who have experience hiking and are up for a bit of a challenge.

While the trail is not particularly long, it does require a good level of fitness and the ability to handle heights, as there are several sections with steep drop-offs. The reward, however, is well worth it. From the summit, you’ll have panoramic views of Waikiki, the island’s coastline, and the deep blue waters of the Pacific. It’s a breathtaking sight that makes the climb worthwhile.

For families with younger children, it’s important to assess your kids’ hiking abilities before attempting Diamond Head. While our 5 year old managed the hike well, our 3 year old needed to be carried for much of the way. Proper footwear, sunscreen, hats, and plenty of water are essential for this hike, as the trail is exposed to the sun and can get quite hot.

While it might not seem like the typical kid-friendly attraction, we found it to be a surprisingly engaging and educational experience for our children. The USS Arizona Memorial and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum offer a mix of history and interactive exhibits that captivate both adults and kids.

Our visit began with the USS Arizona Memorial, which provides a solemn but important lesson in American history. We prepared our children for the experience by explaining the significance of Pearl Harbor and the importance of respectful behavior at this memorial site.

After the USS Arizona, we visited the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, which turned out to be a highlight for our kids. What to Pack for a Trip to Hawaii?

Last but not least, I wanted to share our list of essentials to take to your Oahu with Kids vacation to ensure you are prepared for various activities and weather conditions.

1. Beach Essentials: Swimsuits, beach towels, reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, flip-flops, and a reusable water bottle. Here is my Hawaii Beach Essential list.
2. Clothing: Light, breathable clothing like shorts, t-shirts, sundresses, and a light jacket for cooler evenings.
3. Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes or sandals for hiking and exploring. We recommend these hiking sandals for women, these for men, and these for kids.
4. Snorkeling Gear: If you plan to snorkel, bringing your own gear can be more convenient. Here’s the snorkel that my sons use, and the ones my husband and I prefer.
5. Daypack: A small backpack for day trips and excursions.
6. Bug Spray: Here is our favorite DEET-free mosquito repellent.
7. Electronics: Waterproof phone cases, camera gear, chargers, and portable power banks.
8. Documents: ID, credit cards, travel insurance information, and copies of reservations or confirmations.
9. Extras: A lightweight rain jacket (for tours like Kualoa Ranch), snacks, and a travel guide or map of the islands.

When we planned our trip to Oahu, Hawaii, we knew we wanted to experience an adventure that would be memorable for the whole family. That’s when we discovered Kualoa Ranch, a place that offers natural beauty, adventure, and Hollywood magic. If you’ve ever seen movies like Jurassic Park or series like Jumanji, you might be familiar with the stunning landscapes that make Kualoa Ranch so special. It’s one thing to watch these iconic scenes on the big screen, but it’s another to step into the world where they were filmed.

Why Kualoa Ranch Is Worth the Visit

Once you arrive at Kualoa Ranch, it’s clear why this place is considered one of Oahu’s top attractions. The ranch offers a wide range of activities, from ATV tours and horseback riding to zip-lining and movie site tours. But for us, the real draw was the Jungle Expedition Tour, which promised an off-road adventure deep into the heart of the Ranch’s landscapes.

Before we get into the details of the tour itself, it’s important to note that Kualoa Ranch is not your typical tourist spot. The remoteness of the location means that it’s not as crowded as some of the more popular destinations on Oahu, which adds to its appeal. You’re able to experience the natural beauty of the island without the distractions of large crowds. It’s a place where you can truly connect with the land, the history, and the magic of the movies.

Kualoa Ranch is a place where adventure and history come together in a way that is uniquely Hawaiian. Whether you’re a movie fan, a nature lover, or just someone looking for a memorable experience with your family, Kualoa Ranch has something for everyone.

Our Kualoa Ranch Jungle Tour Experience

We opted for the Jungle Expedition Tour, a 90-minute tour that takes you deep into the Hakipu’u rainforest aboard an open-air jeep. With a minimum age requirement of 3 years old, our littlest adventurer just made the cut. Our journey began with a warm welcome from our guide, who shared fascinating Hawaiian mo’olelo (legends) unique to the area, along with insights into the Ranch’s various stewardship and conservation initiatives. The excitement only grew as we learned that the trails we were about to cross had been featured in iconic films like Jurassic World, Kong: Skull Island, and Jumanji.

The custom-built jungle jeep rumbles along jungle trails, across isolated stream beds, and powers up steep, bumpy hills to see the most spectacular views we’ve ever seen. At various points along the ride, your guide will stop for the group to get out an explore. We were able to get a close look at typical Hawaiian housing structures and wooden deity sculptures.

After that, the jeep took us through sweeping iconic Hawaiian landscapes, with huge green mountains reaching up to the sky. As we drove up the hills, we were educated on many local plants, including fruit-bearing trees. Guests are able to sample the fruit at the times of year that they’re ready to harvest, which is typically in August. Shortly after, we took a short hike to a scenic overlook with views of the valleys.

After the hike, which was at the peak of the land, our jeep rumbled downhill towards the see, and we were able to get a breathtaking view of the Mokoli’i island aka Chinaman’s Hat aka Hershey’s Kiss poking up out of the sea. Shortly after, our tour drove through the movie sets, where we saw the filming locations of Jurassic World, Jumanji, and others, in addition to some props that had been left behind. The tour concluded back at the start, where we could continue to explore the front area of the ranch on foot.

One of the highlights of our visit was the willingness of the guides to take photos throughout the tour. They made sure to capture each group before moving on to the next point, which was very nice, as it can be so challenging to get family photos all together.

What to Expect

1. All-Weather Adventure: The tour runs rain or shine, thanks to the canopy on the jeep. In fact, it poured right before our tour, but Mother Nature was on our side, and the sun came out for the rest of the day.
2. Bumpy Ride: Be prepared for a rugged journey. While our kids found the bumps thrilling, and sometimes even soothing—our youngest dozed off for a bit, the tour isn’t recommended for expectant mothers.
3. Come Prepared: Bring rain jackets for everyone. Even if it’s sunny when you start, the weather can change quickly in the rainforest.

Planning Your Visit

Before you set off on your own Kualoa Ranch adventure, there are a few key things to keep in mind:

How Do You Get to Kualoa Ranch?

Kualoa Ranch is located at 49-560 Kamehameha Highway Kaneohe, Oahu, about 45 minutes from Waikiki. It’s important to note that you’ll need a car to get there, as the ranch is off the beaten path. We found driving ourselves to be the most convenient option, especially with two young children. Construction is ongoing near Kualoa Ranch. To avoid any delays, I recommend allowing extra time for your drive.

If you think that driving is not for you, here is a transfer service from Honolulu to Kualoa Park you might want to check out: Transfer from Waikiki.

You can also get to Kualoa on Honolulu’s City Bus. Although it is the most affordable option, it will take the longest time. From Waikiki Hotels, take any of these buses: #8, #19, #20, #23, #42, #60 or #88A to Kualoa Ranch. Fare is $3 one way for adults, $2 for children.

Arriving and Getting to Your Tour

It’s important to arrive a bit ahead of your scheduled tour time to get situated. This gives you enough time to use the bathroom and locate your pickup spot. The grounds at Kualoa Ranch are quite large, and with many different tour types available, not everyone is picked up right at the front entrance. Arriving early ensures you won’t miss your tour and can start your experience without any stress.

Kualoa Ranch Ticket Office and Booking

We highly recommend booking your tour in advance to ensure you secure your preferred date and time, especially during peak tourist seasons. Ticket prices vary depending on the tour you choose. For example, during our visit, adult tickets for the Jungle Expedition Tour started at $54.95, and children’s tickets (ages 3-12) were priced at $39.95. However, it’s always best to check online for the most current rates.

What to Pack for the Adventure

• Rain jackets for everyone: Even if it’s sunny when you start, the weather can change quickly in the rainforest
• Extra clothes: In case you do get caught in the rain, having a backup set of clothes is essential
• Sunscreen: The strong Hawaiian sun makes sunscreen an absolute must for every outing, even in a covered jeep. This is our favorite. It’s also reef-safe and can be used all over Hawaii.
• Insect repellent: There are lots of mosquitoes around, so don’t forget to put on insect repellent before heading out to keep the bites away. Here is our favorite DEET-free option.
• Comfortable Clothing and Shoes: Make sure to wear light, comfortable clothes, as well as closed-toe shoes or sandals for walking around the ranch.
• Water: While the tour isn’t overly long, it’s always good to have water on hand, especially in Hawaii’s warm climate.

What to Do After the Tour

Once the Jungle Expedition is over, don’t rush off just yet! There’s plenty more to explore at Kualoa Ranch. The grounds are filled with interesting sights, from live and fake horses (statues) to movie memorabilia that will transport you back to the sets of your favorite films. There’s also a gift shop on site where you can pick up clothes, souvenirs, and locally made goods to remember your adventure. We came away with a t-shirt for each of our boys, but we didn’t buy any of the locally-made foods, as they were quite pricey. Either way, it is really fun to visit and see all the stuff they have.

Can you get tickets when you arrive or should you get them in advance online?

Yes, you can buy onsite, but we recommend buying them online ahead of time, as tours have limited availability and may sell out in advance.

How much are the tickets?

The cost of tickets varies depending on the tour you choose. Prices start at $54.95 for some tours, but it’s important to check the specific tour options and current rates on the Kualoa Ranch website. Each tour offers a unique experience, so it’s worth exploring the different options to find the one that best suits your family’s interests and budget.

What are Kualoa Ranch’s hours?

Kualoa Ranch is open Monday through Sunday from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm, with the last tours departing at 3:30 pm. The ranch is closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Aunty Pat’s Café, located in the Visitor Center, operates from 7:30 am to 3:00 pm, with grab-and-go items available until 4:00 pm. The retail and gift shop, also in the Visitor Center, is open from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm. Additionally, the KualoaGrown Market is open Thursday through Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm but is closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Parking at Kualoa Ranch is free and easy. There is a large lot onsite.

Age Requirements

One of the most common questions I received was about age restrictions. For our Jungle Expedition Tour, the minimum age is 3 years old, which meant our youngest was just old enough! All children must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Children of all ages can join the Kualoa Grown Tour, Movie Sites Tour, Ocean Voyage Adventure, and Secret Island Beach Activities.

For the Jurassic Adventure Tour, children also must be 3 years or older. The Multi-Passenger UTV Raptor Tour and Malama Experience require kids to be 5 years or older. For eBike, Horseback, and Zipline Tours, children must be 10 years or older and meet height and weight requirements. Teens 16 years and older can participate in all tours, provided they meet the necessary height and weight criteria.

Is Kualoa Ranch worth it?

Kualoa Ranch is definitely worth it. Visiting was one of the best parts of our trip to Oahu, and we all had a blast. The mix of beautiful scenery, fun adventures, and movie history made it an experience we won’t forget. Though the hike is relatively short at 1.6 miles round trip, be prepared for it to take at least two hours with little ones.

Our Experience

The Diamond Head hike was an adventure for the four of us, though our opinions on the experience varied. My 5 year old and I both loved this hike! The views are spectacular, and we really enjoyed the varying terrain and the challenge of it. My husband, who is afraid of heights, was not as fond of it, and our 3 year old wasn’t able to make the hike without being carried for a large portion of it.

Despite the challenges, we do all agree that the hike was absolutely worth it. The views from the summit are absolutely stunning, offering glimpses of Waikiki, the Pacific Ocean, and Oahu’s beautiful coastline. That said, this hike might not be ideal for every family—especially those with very young kids, anyone not used to hiking, or anyone who isn’t comfortable with heights.

What to Expect on the Trail

The Diamond Head trail is not your average hike. Built in 1908 as part of Oahu’s coastal defense system, the trail has a rich history, but that also means it’s not as smooth or straightforward as other hiking trails you may be used to. The path is a mix of bumpy concrete walkways, steep switchbacks, dark tunnels, and narrow staircases.

One thing to note is that the guardrails are not really at an appropriate height for children, so you have to be vigilant about your kids the entire time. If they aren’t used to hiking, they may act dangerously. If you have a child who tends to be a flight risk or isn’t steady on their feet, I wouldn’t recommend this hike. Our son was 43″ tall at the time the below photos were taken.

How long is the Diamond Head hike?

The hike is about 1.6 miles round trip, with an elevation gain of 560 feet. It took our family, who is used to hiking, about an hour and 45 minutes to complete, including stops to rest and take in the views. For those who aren’t as used to hiking, it might take a bit longer.

Is the Diamond Head hike worth it for kids?

This is the question I’ve been asked most frequently, and honestly, my feelings are mixed. We hike with our kids every few weeks and have done bigger hikes like Stone Mountain, so they’re accustomed to hiking and to somewhat challenging terrain. If your children have some hiking experience and understand the basics of hiking safely, they will really enjoy this adventure. Our 5 year old handled the trail fairly well.

However, our 3 year old found the hike to be a little bit too much, and he needed to be carried for a large portion of the trail. If you have a child who needs to be carried often or who hasn’t done much hiking before, this trail could be tough for both of you.

While Diamond Head is an incredible hike with unforgettable views, it’s not necessarily the best choice for every family. I would recommend it for families with older kids, those who are experienced hikers—or for those ready to give their arms a workout carrying a tired child!

Preparing for Your Hike

What’s the best time to go on this hike?

The park’s operating hours are 6:00 am to 6:00 pm daily, with the last entry at 4:00 pm. Gates close at 6:00 pm. The park is closed on Christmas and New Year’s Day.

A lot of people recommend the sunrise hike for little kids due to the time change from the U.S. mainland, but I wouldn’t suggest starting this hike in the dark. For the same reason, I also wouldn’t recommend a sunset hike, as you’d be leaving in potential darkness. We started our hike at 3:50 pm and finished around 5:30 pm, and I think it was a great choice since it cooled down a bit as we were going, and we finished well before dark. It’s also a good idea to choose a day with some cloud cover. The trail is completely exposed to the sun, and it can get really hot.

How to Get to Diamond Head from Waikiki

Diamond Head State Monument is just a short 15-minute drive from Waikiki. It’s easy to reach by bus, Uber, or, as we did, by rental car. There are parking facilities at the park, and you must buy a parking ticket and arrive 30 minutes prior to your designed hour.

Bus number 23 runs regularly from Kuhio Avenue, and the Waikiki Trolley also takes visitors right to the park’s entrance.

Do I Need to Pay an Entry Fee to Diamond Head?

Yes, all visitors to Diamond Head State Monument need to pay an entry fee and make a reservation online before arriving. Reservations can be made up to 30 days in advance, and it’s advised to book early as the park can sell out. Here is the official website for reservations.

If you drive, you’ll also need a parking reservation. Arrive within the first 30 minutes of your scheduled time, as late arrivals may be denied entry with no refunds. You can make parking reservations here.

Hawaii residents are exempt from the parking fee but must show proof of residency. Visitors with them still need to pay. The cost is $10 per vehicle for parking and $5 per person for each non-Hawaii resident. Children under 3 years of age are free.

Use Appropriate Footwear

All four of us wore sneakers that we had used on other trails before. I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to have sturdy, reliable shoes for this hike. While we did see some people attempting the hike in flip-flops, sandals, or other non-athletic shoes, they didn’t seem to be having the best time. The trail includes rough, uneven surfaces and steep inclines, where solid footing is crucial. A twisted ankle or a fall could easily ruin your day—or even your entire vacation. These are the hiking boots we use and recommend.

Facilities on the Trail

One thing to note is the lack of facilities on the trail itself. There is a small station at the entrance where you can use the bathroom and grab a map, but once you’re on the trail, there are no restrooms or other amenities. It’s important to plan accordingly, especially if you’re hiking with kids. We made sure everyone used the bathroom before starting the hike.

What to Pack for the Diamond Head Hike

When getting ready for the Diamond Head hike, it’s important to pack just the right amount. You don’t want to carry too much and be weighed down, but there are a few must-have items you shouldn’t forget:

• Water: Bring plenty of water in a durable, insulated bottle to stay hydrated, especially since the trail can get hot and there’s no access to water along the way.

  Our family prefers these reusable water bottles:
  • Water Bottles for kids
  • Water Bottles for adults

• Hat and Sunscreen: A high SPF, sweat-resistant sunscreen is essential to protect your skin from the intense Hawaiian sun. Apply it before starting the hike and bring some along for reapplication. This is our favorite. Also, don’t forget to wear a hat!

• Insect Repellent: A small bottle of insect repellent will help keep mosquitoes away. Here is our favorite DEET-free option.

• Snacks: Pack some light snacks like trail mix or granola bars to help keep your energy levels up. Especially for the kids, it can be a lifesaver. Here are some of our favorite trail snacks.

Final Thoughts

In the end, the decision to hike Diamond Head comes down to your family’s preferences and abilities. For us, despite the challenges, the Diamond Head hike was worth it, and I would absolutely do it again! The views from the summit were incredible, and it’s an experience we’ll always remember. However, I’d hold off on this one with very little kids (unless you don’t mind carrying them), anyone too wobbly on their feet, or anyone who isn’t fond of heights.

Pearl Harbor might not be the first place you think of when planning a family trip to Hawaii, but we found that it offers a unique mix of history and adventure that’s surprisingly kid-friendly. From the boat ride to the USS Arizona Memorial to hands-on exhibits at the Aviation Museum, there’s plenty to entice both kid and adult visitors, while maintaining the important historical significance of the site. In this post, I’ll share our experience and top tips to help you make the most of visiting Pearl Harbor with kids.

Introduction to Visiting Pearl Harbor with Kids

Pearl Harbor offers several activities and sites to explore. The Pearl Harbor National Memorial is operated by the National Park Service and includes:

• The USS Arizona Memorial: Be sure to reserve your ticket ahead of time for a $1 reservation fee.
• Pearl Harbor exhibit galleries: These are free to enter, and you don’t have to plan anything in advance.
• Outdoor memorials and exhibits: also free.

Additionally, there are other historical sites operated privately, such as the USS Missouri Memorial, the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum, and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum. Each of these sites requires separate tickets for entry. We chose to visit the Aviation Museum, and it turned out to be a fantastic experience for our family.

Arriving at Pearl Harbor National Memorial

We decided to arrive early at 7 am to beat the crowds. This strategy paid off, as the site is less busy in the morning, giving us some quiet moments to explore. The early start also allowed us to manage our kids better, as they were fresh and attentive, which is crucial in a place that demands respect and quietness.

Explaining the somber nature of Pearl Harbor to our children beforehand helped set the tone. It’s essential they understand that this isn’t just another tourist site but a memorial where silence and respect are paramount.

USS Arizona Memorial

The USS Arizona Memorial is one of the most iconic sites at Pearl Harbor. Sitting over the sunken battleship, visitors are able to see the final resting place of some of the service people who lost their lives in the attack. The names of those who lost their lives are inscribed in stone inside the USS Arizona Memorial.

It’s essential to secure tickets in advance to ensure your visit. We obtained our tickets through the official government site. Booking online was straightforward, and it allowed us to plan our day efficiently.

We elected to book the first tour of the day, as we thought it would be less crowded in case our 5 and 3 year olds couldn’t maintain the necessary tone for visiting the Memorial. In the end, they both did very well. At 8 am, we began our tour of the USS Arizona Memorial.

The tour starts with a 23-minute film showing actual footage from the attack on Pearl Harbor. There are parts of the movie that can be intense for kids, and the length is quite long for little ones, so we sat in the back of the theater. While there’s no graphic depiction of human casualties, the large screen and loud explosions can be overwhelming for small children.

After the video, we took a boat ride to the Memorial itself, which is the only way to get there. The boat ride is included with your USS Arizona Memorial ticket if you buy them here. Please note that we were told by other visitors that other websites and vendors sell Memorial and boat tickets separately. Do not make the mistake of only getting a Memorial ticket but not a boat ticket, as you’ll have no way of accessing the Memorial. The harbor boat ride was a highlight for the kids.

Strollers are not permitted on the boat or at the Memorial, but there’s a designated stroller parking area near the theater. Visitors have a set amount of time at the Memorial, with the entire experience lasting around 45 minutes.

The Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum

After visiting the USS Arizona Memorial, we walked around the free exhibits on the grounds before taking the shuttle to the Pacific Aviation Museum. The shuttle ride is included in the Aviation Museum admission price, and it’s a comfortable, air-conditioned ride. The staff was very helpful, even assisting us with loading our stroller onto the shuttle.

The wait for the shuttle wasn’t long, but it’s worth noting that there might be a short line. The kids enjoyed the ride, as it gave them a chance to see more of the base. Make sure to take little ones to the restroom before getting in line for the shuttle.

Exploring the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum

The Aviation Museum was the favorite thing in our visit, especially for the kids. You’ll start with an introductory film, and then you can choose between a guided tour or exploring the museum on your own.

The museum is divided into two main areas: the hangars and the outdoor exhibits. The outdoor area was particularly engaging for our children, as they could touch and explore the planes and trucks on display. The vintage fire truck was a big hit!

The hangar is filled with more recent military aircraft from around the world, some of which are being restored. These exhibits are not interactive, but there is a flight simulator inside (with a minimum height requirement) that our older son loved. The hangar itself is a piece of history, having been standing during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The shattered glass windows, left untouched by the commanding officer during the war, serve as a poignant reminder of the site’s wartime past, emphasizing that it was an active war zone. The entire museum is stroller-friendly which made our day a lot easier. Here’s our recommended lightweight double stroller we travel with.

We finished our visit around 12:30 pm and took the shuttle back to the main entrance. The kids were tired but happy, and I was pleasantly surprised at how much more kid-friendly the experience was than I had expected.

USS Battleship Missouri Memorial

If you’ve never set foot on a massive battleship, the USS Missouri—known as the “Mighty Mo”—is a must-visit. This giant floating city offers a glimpse into life aboard one of the vessels similar to those sunk during the attack on Pearl Harbor. You can even stand on the exact spot where the peace treaty ending World War II in the Pacific was signed. Though we didn’t visit, we’ve heard it’s a great experience for families. The ship served from 1944 to 1992, with its interior reflecting this span, from original control panels to early computers.

We decided not to visit the USS Missouri because I felt that the enclosed spaces might be too overwhelming for the kids. We also skipped the submarine for the same reason. However, we were able to see the outside of the submarine from the grounds near the entrance, which the kids enjoyed.

Preparing Your Visit

Before heading out, familiarize yourself with the essential details provided by the National Park Service here. This resource offers information on what to expect during your visit, including the rules and guidelines for entry, like the bag policy.

Plan to visit Pearl Harbor early in your trip. If the weather is bad or the winds are too strong, the ferry to the USS Arizona Memorial might be canceled. In that case, you’ll receive a free return ticket that you can use within the next seven days.

Where is the USS Arizona Memorial?

The USS Arizona Memorial is built above the remains of the sunken battleship in Pearl Harbor, adjacent to Ford Island. This site is only accessible by boat, with visitors departing from the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center. Access to the Memorial is through a timed boat ride, which is included when you get the ticket. Pearl Harbor is on the island of Oahu in Hawaii.

Parking and Facilities at Pearl Harbor

Parking: Parking at the visitor center costs $7 per day, payable through a virtual system on mobile devices or at an onsite kiosk. Parking lots can fill up quickly, so it’s best to arrive early.

Restrooms: Restrooms are available throughout the visitor center, but not on the USS Arizona Memorial. There are also restrooms at the Aviation Museum.

Food: Only clear water is allowed in the theater, on the shuttle boats, and at the USS Arizona Memorial. However, you can enjoy food and drinks at the visitor center, which has a small snack shop with sandwiches and drinks. The nearby Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum offers a food truck and vending machines, while the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum has a restaurant. The Battleship Missouri Memorial also has a lunch truck, and there are various restaurants a short drive from the visitor center.

Bag Policy and Safety Information

Bags are not allowed at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, except for clear stadium bags and those carrying medical devices, which may be permitted at the National Park Service’s discretion. You can’t bring purses, backpacks, or diaper bags. To manage a full day with kids, consider using a gallon-size Ziploc bag for essentials or wear clothing with plenty of pockets. Personal items like cameras, cell phones, and wallets are allowed. There is a storage facility near the entrance for any bags under a fee. Leaving things in your car is not recommended. Pearl Harbor Hours

Pearl Harbor is open daily from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. The last shuttle to the USS Arizona Memorial departs at 3:00 pm. The site is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day.

Pearl Harbor Tickets

Visiting Pearl Harbor is free, but there are several additional costs to be aware of. These include fees for services such as bag checks, parking, audio guides, and reservation charges like tickets to the individual museums and the Memorial.

USS Arizona Memorial Tickets

The tickets are available through the official site. You must make advanced reservations, as it is a highly demanded attraction. The cost is $1 per ticket.

Pacific Aviation Museum Tickets

General admission to the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum grants access to over 50 aircraft and exhibits across Hangar 37, Hangar 79, and the Outdoor Exhibit, including the special exhibit “The Walt Disney Studios and World War II.” Ticket prices are $25.99 for adults, $14.99 for children (ages 4-12). Children 3 and under are free.

Final Thoughts and Tips from a Parent

Overall, our visit to Pearl Harbor was much more kid-friendly than we had anticipated, especially the Aviation Museum, which turned out to be a highlight for the whole family. We initially planned the visit because of my husband’s love of history, but I can confidently recommend it as a great experience for families.

Here are some final tips I want to share:

Plan Ahead: Preparing before your visit can make a big difference. Since bags aren’t allowed at Pearl Harbor, use a clear bag for essentials or keep them in your stroller. There’s a bag check available, it’s best not to leave valuables in your car.

Educate Beforehand: Pearl Harbor’s history is complex, so it’s helpful to give your kids some background knowledge based on their age. You can read my article about Preparing Toddlers for New Experiences.

Arrive Early: Beat the crowds and the midday heat by getting there early, and plan to visit early in your trip to avoid weather cancelations.

Teach Respect: Remind your kids that Pearl Harbor is a memorial and explain the importance of respectful behavior.

Bring Snacks: While water fountains are available, pack snacks to avoid hungry kids. Remember, only clear water is allowed on the USS Arizona Memorial.

Let’s dive into what makes Waimea Valley and its iconic Waimea Falls a must-visit spot for your next family trip.

Introduction

Waimea Valley, located on the North Shore of Oahu, is a 1,875-acre nature park that offers visitors natural beauty and cultural heritage. The Valley is a living example of Hawaiian flora, fauna, history, and culture. It is managed by the nonprofit organization Hi’ipaka LLC, which ensures the preservation and protection of this sacred place.

As you enter Waimea Valley, you’ll be greeted by a paved hiking trail that leads you through the park. This trail is the main artery of the hike, connecting visitors to its various attractions, including the botanical gardens, the falls, cultural sites, and other trails.

Why is Waimea Falls, Oahu a must-visit?

Waimea Falls, located at the end of the main hiking trail, is the highlight of any visit to Waimea Valley. This stunning waterfall cascades into a clear pool, creating a beautiful natural oasis. The falls are not only beautiful but also accessible, offering visitors the opportunity to swim in the pool at the base of the falls. My husband, older son, and I all swam in the crystal clear water, and it was an unforgettable experience I’m sure your family will also love!

Excellent Spot for Families with Kids

One of the main reasons the Waimea Falls hike is a must-do for families is its accessibility. The main trail is stroller-friendly, making it an excellent choice for families with young children. In addition to the falls, Waimea Valley offers a range of activities and attractions. The botanical gardens feature a diverse collection of native Hawaiian plants. Children will enjoy spotting the various plants and learning about their significance in Hawaiian culture.

Exploring Waimea Valley – The Hike to the Falls

The adventure starts on the paved trail that winds through Waimea Valley. It’s easy for all ages, perfect for families as it is stroller-friendly. Here’s our recommended lightweight double stroller that makes life so much easier. As you hike, you’ll be walking through the botanical gardens, surrounded by lush plants, birdsong, and the gentle sound of rustling leaves, creating a calm and peaceful atmosphere. Our younger son even took a stroller nap on the walk to the Falls.

Botanical Gardens

The botanical gardens in Waimea Valley are a must-see for nature lovers. They boast a variety of native Hawaiian plants like palms, ferns, orchids, and gingers. Keep an eye out for the kalo plant, which was brought to Hawaii by Polynesian voyagers and became a key food source for early Hawaiians. As you explore, you’ll spot this and other significant plants that tell the story of Hawaii’s rich botanical heritage.

Cultural Places and Demonstrations

As you hike the Waimea Valley main trail, you’ll first encounter Hale o Lono, a heiau dedicated to Lono, the god of peace and agriculture, still honored today. Further down, the Ku‘ula Shrine, dedicated to the fishing god Ku‘ula, reflects the importance of fishing in Hawaiian tradition. The valley also features Kauhale Kahiko, a reconstructed traditional Hawaiian living site, Hale Iwi, a sacred burial temple, and Lo‘i agricultural terraces, showcasing early Hawaiian farming practices centered around kalo (taro).

Along the trail, you’ll encounter various educational and cultural demonstrations. These interactive displays provide a glimpse into traditional Hawaiian practices, such as hula dance, lei making, and storytelling. You can stop along the hike to engage with these demonstrations and gain a deeper understanding of Hawaiian culture and its history. Waimea Valley is rich in cultural sites that offer a glimpse into ancient Hawaiian life.

Reaching Waimea Falls

The highlight of the hike is reaching Waimea Falls, a stunning 45-foot tall waterfall that plunges into a large pool and invites visitors in for a swim. The path to the falls is well-maintained and easy to navigate, even with strollers. The trail to Waimea Falls is about 3/4 of a mile and takes approximately 30 minutes if you don’t stop along the way. You will want to stop frequently, though.

We took our time, spending a couple of hours leisurely walking and stopping frequently to observe the natural beauty of the botanical garden and cultural demonstrations and explore with our older son. Our younger son fell asleep as soon as we started, and as every mom knows, when that happens, you take your time and let him sleep as long as possible.

The pool at the base of the falls is beautiful, and swimming is an unforgettable way to enjoy the falls. Whether you choose to swim or simply enjoy the view, the Falls are a must-see attraction.

PRO TIP: If the Valley is crowded, you can walk straight to the Falls to avoid the crowds, then explore the botanical gardens and cultural demonstrations on the way back.

Swimming at Waimea Falls

Swimming at Waimea Falls is a memorable experience. The water is cool and inviting, offering a perfect way to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the Valley and a great option for cooling off after your hike. The water is so clear that you can see straight through to the rocky bottom. The swim is not strenuous for adults as the pool is not very large, but kids will struggle to make it from the entry area to the Falls themselves without some help.

It’s a good idea to wear waterproof shoes into the falls, so you can more comfortably walk on the rocky bottom where you enter. We recommend these hiking sandals for women, these for men, and these for kids.

The park provides life jackets, and anyone entering the falls has to wear one. Lifeguards are on duty during all open hours and visitors must adhere to their rules for safety while swimming. For example, when we visited, swimming was only allowed on the right side of the falls. Don’t attempt to climb the waterfall. Climbing can lead to serious injuries or even death due to the slippery rocks and strong currents in the water below.

PRO TIP: If it is possible, call ahead of your visit to check waterfall conditions to avoid disappointment. Lifeguards decide at 9 am each day whether swimming will be allowed, so a quick call will help you plan better. This is the number: (808) 638-7766.

The Toa Luau is highly recommended by travelers. It’s considered one of the top luaus on Oahu. Preparing for Your Visit

When to Visit Waimea Valley

The best time to visit Waimea Valley is during the early morning hours or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and crowds. Waimea Valley is open year-round, but visiting during the off-peak season from November to March can provide a more serene experience. This season offers warm temperatures and reduced rainfall. We visited in February, and the weather was perfect! However, even during the busy summer months, the Valley’s extensive grounds allow for plenty of space to explore without feeling too crowded, and the hiking trail is largely covered by a tree canopy to help keep you cool.

How to Get to Waimea Valley

Waimea Valley is located at 59-864 Kamehameha Highway in Haleiwa, on the North Shore of Oahu. If you’re driving from Waikiki, you can reach the valley in about an hour via the H-1 freeway and Kamehameha Highway, which is how we arrived. You can find a rental car here, or for those who prefer not to drive, several tour operators offer packages that include transportation to and from the Valley.

What are the parking and entry fees?

Waimea Valley is privately owned and requires an entrance fee, which includes complimentary parking for guests. The admission fees at the time of our visit were:

• Adults: $25
• Seniors: $20
• Students (with ID): $20
• Children (ages 4-12): $15
• Group Rate (10 adults): $20 each

Children under 3 are free. While advance reservations are not mandatory, I highly recommend them during busy times to ensure entry and avoid long wait times. There is an onsite parking lot, but it can fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons. When we visited during the low season and early in the morning, the lot was already filling up, though the Valley itself was not crowded.

What to Pack for the Hike

When preparing for your hike, it’s important to pack essentials to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience for your family. Here are a few items you should consider bringing:

• Water: Staying hydrated is crucial, especially during the hike to Waimea Falls. Pack enough water for the entire family. Our family prefers these reusable water bottles:
  • Water Bottles for kids
  • Water Bottles for adults
• Sunscreen: Although there is a good amount of shade along the hiking path, applying sunscreen is still a must to protect against the strong Hawaiian sun. This is our favorite.
• Insect Repellent: There are lots of mosquitoes around, so don’t forget to put on insect repellent before heading out to keep the bites away. Here is our favorite DEET-free option.
• Comfortable Clothing and Shoes: Make sure to wear light, comfortable clothes, as well as closed-toe shoes or sandals suitable for walking on paved paths and the rocky surfaces near the falls. We all wore hiking sandals, which are perfect for excursions like this. We recommend these hiking sandals for women, these for men, and these for kids.
• Swimwear and Towel: If you plan on swimming at Waimea Falls, don’t forget to bring swimwear and a towel.
• Snacks: There is a restaurant/concession stand at the entrance, but having some snacks on hand is always a good idea since the hike will take several hours round trip.
• Hats and Sunglasses: To further protect against the sun, bring hats and sunglasses for the whole family.

Facilities and Amenities

One thing we love about Waimea Valley is the range of facilities available to visitors. Here are some of the amenities you can find in the Valley:

• Gift Shop: Located at the visitor center, offering souvenirs, Hawaiian-made crafts, and unique items. Some of the cultural demonstration tables along the hike will also sell locally-made goods.
• Snack Bar and Coffee Shop: Near the visitor center, perfect for grabbing a quick snack or coffee before or after exploring.
• Restrooms: Conveniently located near the main entrance and throughout the gardens.
• Changing Rooms: Near the waterfall, ideal for changing out of wet clothes after swimming.

Accessibility

For those who want to reach the falls but can’t make the hike for mobility reasons, there is a shuttle available from Hale Ho’ike near the entrance to Waimea Falls. The first shuttle starts at 10:00 am. Shuttle ticket sales end at 3:00 pm. One-way is $10 for each person. There is also daily scooter rental available to use on the pathway to Waimea Falls.

Safety Tips

• Wear a Life Jacket in the Falls: It is mandatory for anyone entering the Falls to wear a life jacket, and they are provided by the park to anyone who enters the Falls.
• Stay on the Hiking Trail: To preserve the natural beauty and cultural sites, always stay on the designated paths.
• Respect the Land: Remember that Waimea Valley is a sacred place with historical significance. Show respect for the land and its cultural heritage by not disturbing any archaeological sites.
• Supervise Children: Keep a close eye on children, especially near the Falls.

To ensure an enjoyable visit, it’s essential to plan ahead. Here are some tips:

• Arrive Early: Arriving early allows you to avoid the crowds and explore the Valley in a more peaceful setting.
• Pack Essentials: Make sure to bring water, sunscreen, insect repellent, comfortable walking shoes, swimwear, towels, snacks, hats, and sunglasses.
• Participate in Activities: Take advantage of the educational and cultural demonstrations to enrich your visit.

We visited on our recent trip to Oahu, and the myriad of brightly colored tropical fish you can see during Hanauma Bay snorkeling did not disappoint! In this blog post, you’ll find everything you need to know to visit this incredible destination with your kids and make the most memorable trip for your own family.

On the coast of Oahu, Hanauma Bay is not just a stunning natural reserve; it is a dormant volcano that offers one of the best snorkeling experiences in Hawaii. The Bay is protected by cliffs and reefs, which keeps the water clear, calm, and full of marine life. This environment is ideal for families seeking both adventure and tranquility and created a perfect opportunity for our older son’s first-ever snorkeling experience.

Our family outing to Hanauma Bay wasn’t just fun; it was a learning opportunity, offering us all a deeper appreciation for marine conservation. The breathtaking scenery and unique underwater activities make Hanauma Bay a must-visit destination in Oahu.

Is Hanauma Bay worth it?

YES! Despite some challenges like securing parking due to its limited availability, the Bay remains a must-see destination on Oahu Island. The chance to snorkel in a protected marine life conservation area, surrounded by coral and diverse fish species, makes this place a top attraction in Hawaii.

Preparing for Your Visit

From scoring tickets to packing smart, this guide has everything you need to make your day at the Bay totally stress-free and a whole lot of fun.

When is the best time to visit Hanauma Bay?

Timing is everything when planning your visit. To avoid the crowds, weekdays are preferable, especially early mornings right after opening. Hanauma Bay welcomes visitors starting at 6:45 am and closes at 4:00 pm daily, except for Mondays and Tuesdays when it is closed. The last educational video, required for entry, is shown at 1:40 pm, with no new entries allowed after 2:00 pm. Remaining visitors are prompted to begin to exit the beach at 3:15 pm, and the gates at the highway shut at 4:00 pm.

The park is closed on major US holidays, specifically Christmas Day (December 25th) and New Year’s Day (January 1st). This schedule is subject to change at any time. For the latest information, call the main phone number at (808)-768-6861.

How to Visit Hanauma Bay

Visiting Hanauma Bay requires a bit of advance planning due to its popularity and the measures in place to protect its delicate marine environment. Hanauma Bay tickets must be purchased online, which are made available 48 hours in advance. Each adult ticket costs $25, while children under 12 can enter for free.

Here’s a useful tip: Tickets become available 48 hours in advance of your visit, so make sure you’re logged into the ticketing site and ready to refresh your screen just before they go live at 7:00 am HST every morning. My husband and I elected to do this simultaneously from different computers to ensure we got the time we wanted. And we did, easily! Additionally, try to plan your visit on weekdays or during the off-season when demand is typically lower. This strategy can significantly increase your chances of securing a spot.

How to Get to Hanauma Bay

We rented a car and drove to Hanauma Bay from our hotel in Waikiki Beach, but booking a tour is likely the easier option since parking can be quite challenging. This one has great reviews, and I’ve taken tours through this website before, and we’ve always enjoyed them!

Parking in Hanauma Bay

When planning your visit to Hanauma Bay, it’s essential to consider the parking and ticketing logistics. The parking lot at the Bay is quite small and fills up quickly: it only has 300 parking stalls, with no guaranteed parking; when we arrived, there were already over ten cars waiting for a spot, as the lot was completely full.

An alternative is to park at Koko Head District Park, which is about a 15-minute walk away. My husband opted to drop the kids and me off at the entrance and park there. He then walked to meet us at the top of the hill that goes down into the lot. It’s worth noting that this option involves several stairs down to the entrance, making it difficult if you’re bringing a stroller—I ended up carrying ours while the kids walked. Fortunately, we travel with a light double stroller, which made this possible.

Parking Fees at Hanauma Bay: $3.00 per vehicle (cash Only) Parking at Koko Head District Park is free.

Entering Procedure

Upon arrival at Hanauma Bay, we were required to watch a 9-minute educational video that covers reef safety, proper snorkeling techniques, and ways to avoid harming the coral. You go in at a designated time with your group. Don’t be late or you could be denied entry. After the video, there’s a 10-minute descent from the Visitor Center down the hill to the beach. There is a shuttle that can take you up and down. We walked down but took it back up. It is free.

What should I pack for Hanauma Bay?

Beach towel, swimsuit, sun shirts, life vests, water shoes, cell phone or camera with a waterproof case, and reef-safe sunscreen.

Make sure to pack water and snacks for your visit, and you can bring a cooler, but remember that glass and alcohol are not allowed. There’s a snack bar at the top of the hill, but it’s quite expensive. If you decide to head up to the snack bar and plan to return to the beach, get your hand stamped to avoid having to watch the entry video again.

Additionally, I recommend bringing your own snorkeling gear to Hanauma Bay. While you can rent equipment there, it costs $20 for a standard set, and the rental booth, which opens at 7:00 am, offers only snorkel sets and life vests. Here’s the snorkel that my sons use, and the ones my husband and I prefer.

Are there facilities and amenities?

Hanauma Bay has several amenities to make your visit more comfortable. Lockers are available at the beach level for securing your belongings. The park is wheelchair accessible, ensuring everyone can enjoy the experience. There is a snack bar on the upper level. Additionally, there are showers for rinsing off sand and convenient restrooms.

Safety is important, especially when snorkeling with children. Some essential safety tips include:

• Snorkel as a group and keep children within sight at all times
• Familiarize your children with their gear in shallow water before exploring deeper areas
• Stay hydrated and reapply sunscreen regularly
• Be aware of ocean conditions

Hanauma Bay Snorkeling

Snorkeling in the calm, clear waters of Hanauma Bay is a wonderful experience. We enjoyed exploring the underwater world together, encountering schools of tropical fish and stunning coral reefs. The Bay’s geography naturally shields it from strong currents, creating an ideal environment for children and new snorkelers. Safety of both swimmers and marine line is paramount, so the Bay is monitored by lifeguards, and designated snorkeling areas are marked for extra protection.

Animals You Can See

The marine life in Hanauma Bay is diverse and abundant. Visitors often spot the humuhumunukunukuapua’a (Hawaii’s state fish), brightly colored parrotfish, and even the elusive moray eels. Snorkeling here also offers opportunities to see several species of sea turtles, which are considered sacred in Hawaiian culture.

How to Protect the Coral

When snorkeling at Hanauma Bay, remember you’re interacting with a living reef. Even with many visitors each day, we can minimize our impact with a few simple steps:

• Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen: Ensure your sunscreen is free from harmful chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate. Check the label carefully. Here are our favorite reef safe sunscreen lotion and spray
• Avoid Stepping on Coral: Be mindful of where you stand. Always rest on sand or bare rock, not on the coral.
• Do Not Feed the Fish: Feeding fish disrupts the ecosystem and is prohibited.

Other Things to Do in Hanauma Bay

Enjoying the Beach and Shallow Waters

If snorkeling isn’t your thing, Hanauma Bay’s stunning white sand beach is worth the visit on its own. The shallow waters and soft sand make it a perfect spot for relaxing. Keep in mind that shady spots are limited, so pack extra sun protection like hats, sunglasses, and umbrellas if you plan to spend a lot of time on the beach.

Take a Snorkeling Guided Tour

For families looking to deepen their understanding of Hanauma Bay, guided tours are a great option. These tours are led by knowledgeable guides who provide detailed commentary on the Bay’s geological history, marine ecology, and conservation efforts. They also typically include a ride to and from the Bay and handle securing tickets on your behalf.

Take a Hike

If you’re not into snorkeling but still want to explore the area, hiking is a fantastic option. There are plenty of trails to choose from, offering stunning views and a chance to experience the natural beauty of the Bay.

While we didn’t hike here, we did do other hikes in Hawaii, including Diamond Head. It’s a family-friendly trail, and we did it with our kids.

Maui’s beaches and volcano sunrises get plenty of attention, but ʻĪao Valley is something else entirely. Just fifteen minutes from Kahului Airport, this sacred valley wraps you in emerald cliffs, drifting mist, and the striking ʻĪao Needle. For centuries, it has been a place of spiritual significance and the site of pivotal moments in Hawaiian history.

Today, families can visit this lush state monument for an easy half-day adventure that blends nature, culture, and just the right amount of activity for kids. We found it to be not only a lovely natural place explore, but also to introduce our to the stories and spirit of the land, which is an important part of any visit to Hawaii.

What is ʻĪao Needle?

The centerpiece of ʻĪao Valley is the iconic ʻĪao Needle, known traditionally as Kūkaʻemoku, a 1,200 foot rock formation that rises from the valley floor to a higher height than the Eiffel Tower. The Needle is covered in thick green vegetation and often wrapped in mist, which can make it a little challenging to time your visit to a day when it’s not covered by clouds.

The ʻĪao Needle isn’t just a beautiful natural formation, it’s also a site of deep cultural significance. In Hawaiian tradition, Kūkaʻemoku is tied to Kanaloa, one of the four principal gods. The valley itself is considered sacred, a wahi pana, and holds great spiritual importance to Hawaiians.

Historically, the valley was the site of the Battle of Kepaniwai in 1790. King Kamehameha I’s forces defeated the Maui army here during his quest to unite the islands, a pivotal moment in Hawaiian history.

In the Hawaiian language, ʻĪao means cloud supreme, which is very fitting for a place where the clouds kiss the earth. On our visit, the top of the Needle was playing hide and seek with the morning clouds. We caught a few glimpses when the mist parted, and even with partial visibility, the view was worth it.

What to Expect in ʻĪao Valley: Trails, Views, and the Stream

Upper Trail to the Needle

The main trail is a paved 0.6-mile path with stairs that leads up to a scenic viewpoint of the Needle, as well as down to the river. It’s a gentle walk, completely manageable with kids, and offers beautiful views of the valley along the way. Along the paved walkway, there are a few signs that explain the history, the the plants, and the Hawaiian history.

On the walk up, there’s a small botanical garden, where you can see some of the plants early Hawaiians cultivated when they first settled the valley. Once you reach the viewpoint, you get a clear shot of the ʻĪao Needle. It’s a breathtaking sight, especially with the morning mist dancing around it.

Down to the ʻĪao Stream

When you finish taking photos at the top, you can head back down the stairs towards the ʻĪao Stream and more challenging hiking trails. To wade in the stream, take the narrow trail off to the left (follow the tiny sign that says TRAIL). This trail is unpaved and can be muddy, but it’s short and worth the effort if your family loves a bit of water play.

Although it was February and the water was chilly, it was still 80-degrees out and warm enough for a dip. Our oldest splashed and played, while our youngest hunted for interesting rocks and small fish. We brought towels and a change of clothes for when we were finished in the water. The rocks can be slippery, so water shoes are also necessary.

If you have older kids or teens, the trail to the right from the bottom of the stairs that leads up into the hills. It’s steeper, muddier, and definitely more challenging hiking. We explored a short section, but it isn’t very friendly for small children, even those experienced with hiking. The trail isn’t officially maintained, so use caution if you go that direction.

A word of caution, swimming in ʻĪao Stream, which is possible further up into the harder trail area, where the stream is deeper, is not recommended during a rain. The rocks are very slippery and the water is fast flowing, and flash floods can occur without warning.

Preparing for Your Visit

ʻĪao Valley State Monument Tickets

Planning ahead is key when visiting ʻĪao Valley with kids. Reservations are required for non-residents, and the parking lot is very small, so you’ll need to reserve a spot ahead of time. We booked our parking and entry through the official state website a few days before our visit. It’s a pretty straightforward process: $10 for parking and $5 per adult, with kids three and under free.

Parking

Parking is limited so it’s important to arrive early if you want to avoid the frustration of circling. There were cars parked along the narrow, steep mountain road leading up to the park, which isn’t ideal if you’re unloading kids and gear.

Are There Restrooms Available?

The facilities at ʻĪao Valley State Monument are simple but clean. There’s a small restroom building near the entrance but there aren’t changing facilities.

Can I Buy Food or Water?

There aren’t snack shops, so plan accordingly. There’s no food or water available inside the park, so if you think your kids might get hungry or thirsty, it’s best to bring what you need. We packed snacks, water bottles, bug spray and sunscreen, and we were glad we did.

Cell Phone Service

I highly recommend downloading or printing your reservation, directions, and map ahead of time because cell service gets spotty fast as you approach the valley, and you lose service completely once you are in the park.

Tips For Your Visit

Having now done it ourselves, there are a few things I’d recommend keeping in mind if you’re planning to visit ʻĪao Valley with kids. You will find a complete list of items I recommend bringing along with you in this section.

Visit Early in the Day

Not only will it be easier to find a parking spot, but the valley tends to cloud over as the day warms up. The cooler morning temperatures are also a huge bonus when you’re hiking with kids who may get tired (or cranky) quickly under the midday sun.

Half-Day Stop

The ʻĪao Needle and river in the valley are the main attractions here, unless you want to hike the difficult trails. Plan your visit as part of a half-day itinerary.

Watch the Weather

If possible, try to choose a clear day to visit the monument. Use this website to view the detailed weather forecast if your schedule allows for flexibility.

Be Prepared to Go Offline

Download maps, tickets, and anything else you might need before leaving the hotel. As I mentioned before, there is no cell service in the Valley. Having everything saved to your device or printed out ahead of time saves a lot of potential frustration.

Prepare to Get Wet

Even though the main staircase is paved, the river area and side trails can get muddy, especially after rain, which happens frequently on a tropical island like Maui. Try to wear quick-dry shorts, lightweight shirts, and hiking sandals (the kind that can get wet and still have good traction). Water shoes are perfect for the river. I’d also bring a lightweight jacket or rain shell. The Valley is known for sudden showers, and while we didn’t get rained on, we saw enough passing clouds to know it could have turned wet at any moment.

Bring a small towel and a change of clothes, especially if you’re planning to wade in the river. Having dry clothes made the car ride back much more comfortable for everyone.

Pack Snacks and Water

There are no food vendors or water fountains in the Valley. We brought refillable water bottles for us and for the kids and some easy snacks which kept everyone fueled.

Respect the Local Culture

Finally, remember that ʻĪao Valley is not just a scenic spot but a sacred one. Teach your kids to stay on the trails, respect any posted signs, and avoid disturbing the natural environment. It’s a good opportunity to talk about how we treat special places when we travel.

Once You Leave ʻĪao Valley State Monument

After we left the park, just down the road, we found a small, family-run spot: ʻĪao Valley Farm Stand & Banana Bread.

The stand offers fresh smoothies, banana bread, and coconuts with straws for drinking right out of the shell. Our kids loved this. More than the food, though, what made the stop special was the conversation we had with the owner, who shared stories about the valley, local farming traditions, and Hawaiian history and culture.

I always recommend supporting these local businesses and engaging with locals as a meaningful way to give back when you visit places like Hawaii. It adds a layer of authenticity to your trip that you just don’t get from bigger, more commercial places.

If you plan to stop, just note that hours can be a little unpredictable. It is worth mentioning that as of September 2025, Google Maps says the place is temporarily closed. Always check on Maps or social media before you go. If this particular stop isn’t open, it’s worth searching Google Maps for other locally run fruit stands, which offer a fun way to support locals all over the Hawaiian islands.

Final Thoughts

If you’re wondering if ʻĪao valley worth it, especially when traveling with kids, I can confidently say yes, it is worth a visit. It’s a quick escape into nature without the full commitment of an all-day excursion, and it’s a chance to experience a different side of Maui beyond the beaches and resorts.

It didn’t have the biggest waterfall or the longest trail, but it gave us a quiet moment to connect with Hawaii’s natural beauty and history and spend time in a beautiful, sacred place that we largely had to ourselves.

The Road to Hana is known for its beauty and adventure, and it’s one of Maui’s classic experiences. The journey can be challenging, especially when traveling with kids, so being prepared is the key to making it enjoyable. In this guide, I’ll walk you through my essential tips, the Road to Hana Stops we loved, and things you should know to ensure a safe and memorable ride.

Road to Hana Stops for Kids

Knowing where to stop along the Road to Hana makes planning a lot easier. It’s essential to take snack and bathroom breaks and have a chance to explore the beauty all around you in Maui.

We left our hotel, Wailea Ekahi Village, at 8 am and headed north to Paia, which is considered the unofficial start of the Road to Hana. The last place to use the restroom before going into the Road to Hana is at H.A. Baldwin Beach Park. When you arrive to Paia, be sure to fill your car’s gas tank, as this is the last place before starting your ride.

As you drive, note that the mile markers on Highway 36 will reset when transitioning to Highway 360, the official start of the Hana Highway. To track your journey accurately, reset your car’s odometer at this point (just past mile marker 16). This will make it easier to follow your planned stops and mileage markers.

Jaws Country Store

We loved this stop for some breakfast before going deeper into the drive. They offer a variety of items, from coffee to pastries and açaí bowls. Our kids loved the fresh pastries, and we grabbed some coffee. Jaws Country Store is open daily from 7 am to 3:30 pm.

Twin Falls (Mile Marker #2)

Twin Falls is the first swimming and sightseeing stop on the Road to Hana. It’s kid-friendly, with an easy hike to a waterfall and natural pool where you can swim. Our boys both loved exploring here, and it was hard to tear them away to get back on the road.

To access Twin Falls, around mile marker two, you’ll come across a bridge with a large dirt parking lot on the right side that includes a fruit stand. The entrance to Twin Falls is just to the left of the farm stand. The farm stand provides fresh fruit smoothies that kids will appreciate after a bit of exploring.

Note that parking can be tight, so arrive early and bring cash for the parking fee (currently $10). If you cannot get a spot, it’s best to wait some time until someone leaves. Parking on the side of Hana Highway is not permitted.

Huelo Lookout Fruit Stand (Mile Marker #4.5)

This small but colorful stand is worth a quick stop. They offer smoothies and fresh fruit. Make sure that they’re open before you stop. You’ll see the owner at the stand. If there’s a long line, it’s best to drive on by since it’s a one-man-show and can be time consuming with a lot of patrons.

Maui Garden Grove Cafe (Mile Marker #5.5)

Known for its selection of both sweet and savory island dishes, Maui Garden Grove Cafe offers visitors a chance to enjoy authentic Hawaiian flavors. The cafe features outdoor seating, perfect for a peaceful meal, plus free Wi-Fi. Service on the Road to Hana can be spotty, so this is a good chance to download your maps and reorient if you’re losing service on the road.

Ko’olau Ka’aina o ka wai a Kane (Mile Marker #9)

This state wayside area offers a short hiking trail, restroom facilities, and a barbecue area with picnic tables. It’s an ideal spot to take a break and enjoy the views while having a meal or stretching your legs. Make note of the restrooms, which can be hard to come by on the Road to Hana.

Garden of Eden Arboretum (Mile Marker #10.5)

Garden of Eden Arboretum is a must on your list of Road to Hana stops. It’s absolutely gorgeous and offers a perfect driving break. Known for its gardens and panoramic views, this arboretum is where scenes from Jurassic Park were filmed.

The Garden is open daily from 8am to 4 pm and features over 500 species of tropical plants. We came here specifically to see the incredible rainbow eucalyptus trees, and they were a highlight for me. The best part is that you can explore by car or you can walk, so there’s no need to wake up anyone snoozing in the backseat. The paths are accessible and an easy stroll for any age. Admission to the Garden of Eden is $20 for adults (16 years and older) and $10 for youth (ages 5-16). Children under 5 can enter for free.

Kaumahina Wayside State Park (Mile Marker #12)

This is a scenic stop with a short walk up to a nice view out to the ocean. It has picnic tables, restrooms, and trash cans, though no drinking water is available. This area is a good spot to stretch your legs, enjoy a packed meal, and use the facilities before continuing the Road to Hana.

Ke’anae Arboretum (Mile Marker #16.7)

Ke’anae Arboretum is a botanical garden that features a paved half-mile walkway showcasing 150 varieties of tropical plants, including taro, gingers, hibiscus, and the rainbow eucalyptus trees. It has free entrance daily. We didn’t end up doing this botanical garden because we has already stopped at the Garden of Eden.

Half Way To Hana (Mile Marker #17)

The Halfway to Hana Stand, a stop since 1982, is a must-visit spot for those traveling the Road to Hana. Known for its coconut candy and its freshly made banana bread using locally grown bananas, it’s considered by many as the best on the island. Make sure you grab some to take home! Beyond banana bread, the menu features items like Maui Sunrise ice cream, shave ice, hot dogs, sandwiches, and more. This is also a good spot to use the bathroom.

Wailua Valley State Wayside (Mile Marker #18)

This Road to Hana stop features a small turnoff with limited parking (around four car spots), so be prepared for a possible wait (we had to for a few minutes), but it’s worth for an unforgettable view of Ke’anae Valley. Looking out over the valley, you can view waterfalls, the Ko’olau Gap, Wailua Peninsula, and Haleakala Crater’s rim. Climb the stairs to get the most stunning view of the coastline on the other side, but stay close to little ones, as the stairs aren’t super sturdy.

Pua’a Ka’a State Wayside Park (Mile Marker #22)

A well-deserved break for both parents and children, this park offers a safe place to stretch, use the restroom, and enjoy the rainforest. There is a small parking lot with bathrooms across the street. Be very careful crossing the road here.

The main attraction is the dual waterfall setup, an upper and lower waterfall with pools suitable for swimming. You need to walk across the bridge at the road to get to the lower pool and waterfall. To get to the upper waterfall, walk up the stairs or ramp and into the pool of water. We actually found it easier to cross the river on the stones than get into the pool on the near side. Keep in mind that the water is chilly but beautiful.

Hana Lava Tube (Mile Marker #31)

This road to Hana stop was my kids’ favorite Road to Hana stop. The Lava Tube offers a chance to see geological formations up close. The cave tour is self-guided, so it’s perfect to do at your own pace. It was a welcome break that kept our kids excited and engaged. I wrote a full guide about this stop, and you can read it here.

The cave is open year-round, every day from 10:30 am to 4:00 pm. No reservations are needed, just arrive during the open hours to start your tour.

Hana Bowls

Hana Bowls is a locally owned açaí bowl trailer located at 30 Ulaino Road, Hana, HI. Specializing in açaí bowls, smoothies, lemonade, and coffee, this trailer was hand-built over nine months by the owners. They are only open Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, so it can be a little hard to get here before close if you’re doing the Road to Hana in one day, but it’s worth a spot if it fits into your schedule. Operating hours may vary based on the availability of fresh fruit, so it’s best to check their Instagram, @hanabowls, for updates.

Hāna Farms Roadside Stand, Pizza Oven and Bakery (After Mile Marker #31)

Hāna Farms is a seven-acre farm, grill, bakery, and marketplace. Since 1999, it has cultivated a variety of tropical fruits and spices, expanding from a roadside banana bread stand in 2006 to a full-scale operation, offering in-house products like hot sauces, candies, and spreads. The on-site Bamboo Hale restaurant serves farm-fresh dishes, including wood-fired pizzas and salads. Visitors can explore local produce, crafts, and sustainable practices, making it nice spot on the Road to Hana. We stopped here on the way back to our hotel for dinner, and everyone enjoyed it!

Kilo’s Kitchen (4673 Uakea Rd Hana)

Kilo’s Kitchen is a locally owned food trailer, serving delicious local Hawaiian dishes, daily specials, and hearty “local grinds.” It’s a perfect stop for those looking for authentic Hawaiian cuisine.

Hana Bay Beach Park

This is a peaceful spot where you can relax with the locals on a “black” sand beach. While Hana may not have a downtown to walk, this beach offers an nice experience without the need for reservations or entry fees. Our kids absolutely loved the chance to play in the sand and surf here.

Important Things to Know Before You Go

Road Conditions and Challenges

The Road to Hana spans about 64 miles from Paia to Hana and features over 620 hairpin turns and 59 one-lane bridges. It’s a very long, windy road. The route is carved along the cliffs of Maui’s coastline, with dramatic drops ranging from 100 to 300 feet. This makes for breathtaking views but can be nerve-wracking for those who don’t like heights or prone to motion sickness. If anyone in your group is susceptible to car sickness, be prepared: our younger son, for example, struggled with this and got sick on the drive back.

Driving Logistics

The road is narrow and, at times, only wide enough for one car, meaning stops are frequent, not just for sightseeing, but due to road conditions, cars parked in places they are not supposed to, or unexpected animal crossings. If you’re unfamiliar with driving in such conditions, consider a guided tour. The road is on the side of a cliff. This isn’t great for people who don’t like heights. My husband, while an experienced driver, was really nervous driving.

Check Road Conditions

Always check road conditions before starting, so you know what you are heading into, or. if you should reschedule your journey for another day. Sometimes there are closed or unsafe roads, and the last thing you want is to drive for hours and find you can’t continue.

Check Weather Conditions

Rain is very common in Maui, and wet roads, low clouds, or fog can significantly impact driving safety. Always check current road and weather conditions on sites like the Maui Weather Forecast before setting off. Make sure to rent a car with all wheel drive, so you’ll be prepared for any conditions.

How Long is the Road to Hana?

A round trip from Paia to Hana can take anywhere from 8 to 12 hours, depending on how many stops you make and traffic conditions. We spend the entire day, from 8 am to 9 pm, starting and finishing in our hotel in Wailea. It was challenging, especially with kids, but we did ultimately feel like it was worth it.

If the Road to Hana is a must for your vacation, there are some options to make it more manageable. First, you can choose to stay in a hotel in Paia to get a head start and avoid having to drive to the Hana Highway from your hotel elsewhere. Secondly, you can pack your luggage into your car and stay over in Hana to avoid having to drive back the way you came to your hotel.

Alternatively, some adventurous travelers choose to make the Road to Hana drive a multi-day excursion, continuing around the south side of Maui on the coastal highway after Hana. I personally wouldn’t recommend this with young kids, as the road is even more treacherous and the activities are primarily challenging hikes, but it is an option should this meet your family’s interests and activity level.

Safety

Remember that while exploring scenic spots, safety comes first. Many sites have guardrails for a reason. Refrain from crossing into potentially slippery or unstable areas, as the ground is almost always wet. Rocks near waterfalls are particularly slick and hazardous, so resist the temptation to climb or venture too close to the edge. And be very careful while crossing the Hana Highway, as a drivers are often coming around blind turns with little visibility into what lies ahead of them.

Packing List for the Road to Hana

When preparing for the Road to Hana, packing the right items can make a big difference:

• Cash: Essential for parking fees, roadside stands, and places that don’t accept cards.
• Bug Spray: Keeps pesky mosquitoes away, especially near waterfalls and in rainforests. Here is our favorite DEET-free option
• Sunscreen: This is the one I recommend that’s compliant with Hawaii’s reef protection guidelines.
• Water Shoes and Extra Clothes: Water shoes protect your feet at waterfalls and rocky areas, while a change of clothes keeps everyone comfortable after swimming or unexpected rain. These are the water sandals we like: Kids, Women’s and Men’s.
• Motion Sickness Meds and Vomit Bags: The winding road can induce motion sickness, especially in children. Try Dramamine for Kids, Kids Gravol, and Seabands for little ones, and keep vomit bags accessible, particularly on the ride back when you’ll be stopping less frequently.
• Snacks and Water: Pack a cooler filled with easy-to-eat snacks, fruits, sandwiches, and water to keep hunger at bay but also reduces unnecessary stops.
  • These are the reusable water bottles we like: Water Bottles for kids, Water Bottles for adults
• Comfort Items: Bring wet wipes, hand sanitizer, towels, and trash bags for easy cleanup. These are helpful for cleaning up after swims or for those unfortunate moments when motion sickness strikes.
• First Aid Kit: Minor cuts and scrapes are common, especially if you’re visiting waterfalls or hiking short trails. A basic first aid kit with band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and pain relief medication is a must.
• Kids Entertainment: Long drives can be challenging for kids. Bring car-friendly activities, travel games, or play Eye Spy. I don’t recommend screen time, which can make little ones even more motion sick.

Tips from a Parent

• Keep valuables out of sight: Break-ins are unfortunately common along the Hana Highway. If you’re driving a rental car, you’re already marked as a tourist. Keep valuables at home or hidden, and lock your vehicle securely whenever you step out.
• Keep an eye on the time: Each stop can take longer than expected, especially with kids. We recommend limiting time spent at each stop to ensure you can visit all the spots you plan to without feeling rushed on the return drive.
• Download your maps: While GPS works intermittently on the Road to Hana, having a downloaded map can guide you in areas with no signal.

Final Thoughts

If you decide to take on the Road to Hana with kids, set realistic expectations. Understand that you may not get to stop at every point of interest, and the drive itself is part of the experience. Adjusting your schedule, choosing stops that best suit your family’s pace, and prioritizing comfort can make all the difference.

While we loved aspects of the Road to Hana and saw a lot that we really enjoyed, I’m not sure we’d do it again until the kids were much older. I would additionally consider staying over along the road and taking it as a multi-day trip.

The Road to Hana is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, unforgettable stops and opportunities to take in the beauty Maui has to offer. For us, the Garden of Eden Arboretum was a perfect addition to our Road to Hana itinerary, offering a chance to explore beautiful landscapes, see rare flora, and appreciate stunning views of the Pacific Ocean.

If you’re planning your drive from Paia, which is generally considered the starting point of the Road to Hana, the Garden of Eden is located about 45 minutes from the start. You can easily stop there without continuing on the entire Road to Hana, but if you are doing the long drive, it’s a great chance to stretch your legs.

What makes this spot particularly ideal for families is its flexibility—whether your kids are awake and eager to explore or napping in the backseat (like ours often did on the Road to Hana drive!), Garden of Eden Arboretum can still work for your crew. You can choose to drive through the entire property, allowing you to enjoy the lush surroundings from the comfort of your car, or park and venture out on foot to discover some of the garden’s trails and sights up close. Or you can do a little of both, like we did!

Is the Garden of Eden Arboretum worth it?

Yes! The chance to see the famous rainbow eucalyptus trees was initially the reason I wanted to visit the Garden of Eden. The trees have vibrant, multi-colored bark creating a surreal, almost painted look. Originally native to the Philippines, the rainbow eucalyptus has found a home in the warm, tropical climates of Hawaii. You can also spot them in other states like Florida, Texas, and California, but there’s something magical about seeing them in Maui’s lush landscape.

Why is the rainbow eucalyptus tree colorful?

The rainbow eucalyptus tree’s colors come from its unique bark shedding process. As the outer layers of bark peel away, they reveal bright green inner bark underneath. Over time, this inner bark ages and changes colors, transitioning through shades of blue, purple, orange, and maroon. These layers create the tree’s multicolored appearance, with different hues visible at once, giving it a painted look. This natural process is part of the tree’s growth cycle, contributing to its stunning, rainbow-like effect.

What to Expect During Your Visit

Beyond the rainbow eucalyptus trees, the garden is also known for its cinematic history. Portions of the popular Jurassic Park movies were filmed here, adding an extra layer of excitement for movie buffs. The Keopuka Rock, which you can see from the overlook inside the Garden, is the ocean view opening scene of the movie. If you’re a fan of the film, consider adding a trip to Kualoa Ranch in Oahu, another famous filming location in Hawaii, to your trip.

The Garden of Eden is a privately-owned site but reservations are not required. This makes it a convenient stop even if you’re unsure of your exact timing on the Road to Hana. Unlike some other spots that may be overcrowded or difficult to access, the Garden of Eden Arboretum is relaxed, allowing you to explore at your own pace without the pressure of crowds.

On our visit, the staff at the entrance told us that the garden now is run by a father and daughter team. As you wander through, you’ll notice how well-kept the grounds are, with a variety of paths with different levels of interest and mobility.

The garden features a map on their website with a printed copy given to you upon entering, showing which areas are accessible by car and which are best explored on foot. This helped us plan our visit, ensuring we could see the main highlights while keeping our kids comfortable.

Exploring the Garden with Kids

When we arrived, both of our kids were asleep from the drive, and we appreciated that we could explore a good portion of the garden without waking them. We took a leisurely drive through some sections, enjoying the atmosphere and lush views from the car. I love this flexibility for families because you can adapt your visit to suit the moods and energy levels of your little ones.

When our oldest woke up, we parked and ventured onto the shorter trails, giving him a chance to explore some of the garden’s spots up close. His favorite moment was the seeing waterfall near the trail. All of the trails are relatively flat and very-friendly to anyone who can walk on natural surfaces.

The rainbow eucalyptus trees are undoubtedly a highlight of the garden, and another standout spot within the Garden of Eden Arboretum is the overlook area, where you can see out across the Pacific Ocean.

Tips from a Parent

The Road to Hana is known for its frequent and unpredictable rain showers. It sits in a lush, tropical part of Maui where rain showers help maintain the climate for the natural flora and fauna. During our visit, it rained intermittently, and the Garden of Eden is fully outdoors. To fully enjoy your time here, come prepared with waterproof gear. We recommend bringing:

• Rain jackets for each family member with hoods: Kids’, Women’s and Men’s.
• Waterproof shoes or sandals that are easy to slip on and off: Kids’, Women’s and Men’s.
• Umbrellas to cover you during unexpected showers.
• Snacks and drinks, especially if you’re traveling with kids. There is a small concession stand and a gift shop, but having your own supplies means you can picnic.
• Insect repellent: There are lots of mosquitoes around, so don’t forget to put on insect repellent before heading out to keep the bites away. Here is our favorite DEET-free option.
• Sunscreen in case the sun does peak out on your visit. Remember that Hawaiian law only allows reef-safe sunscreens like this one.

I also recommend bringing extra clothes for the rest of your Road to Hana drive and packing one or two large trash bags to store any wet clothing.

Another tip I’d like to share: don’t wake your kids! Our littlest slept through the entire Garden of Eden visit, and we let him rest. Waking him could have resulted in a cranky toddler, and neither he nor we would have enjoyed the visit as much as we did. He was in a much better mood to experience the rest of the Road to Hana having taken a serene nap under the jungle canopy to the sounds of the Hawaiian rain.

There are beautiful pavilions with picnic tables, offering nice views of Pu’ohokamoa Waterfall, Keopuka Rock (featured in the Jurassic Park movies), and the orchard.

Trail Accessibility

The Garden of Eden’s trails are made of packed gravel, with some being more level than others. While the terrain varies, a trail map is available to help identify the path. Visitors using strollers or wheelchairs are encouraged to use their discretion when choosing which paths to explore.

Imagine descending from the lush jungle and bright sunshine above into a dark, cool underground cave. Armed only with flashlights against the complete darkness, you’ll walk through a space that feels otherworldly. This is what the Hana Lava Tube, one of our favorite Road to Hana stops, has in store for you. If you’ve ever dreamed of stepping inside a real volcanic cave, this spot offers the perfect chance to do just that! What makes this adventure unique is that it’s not a well-known tourist attraction—yet, it offers an incredibly unique experience.

What is the Hana Lava Tube?

Formed approximately 960 years ago as a result of molten lava spewing up from underground and flowing toward the ocean, the Hana Lava Tube is one of the most fascinating Road to Hana stops. As the lava flowed down the landscape, the outer layer cooled and hardened, creating a crust that allowed the molten lava beneath to continue flowing for about two more years. When the lava finally drained out, it left behind a massive underground tunnel, now the largest lava tube in Maui and the 18th largest in the world. Despite its impressive size, experts estimate that only about half of the cave has been discovered, hinting at even more hidden chambers.

For kids, there’s the chance to feel like a real explorer, discovering what feels like the deepest untouched parts of the earth. For parents, there’s history, science, and an experience that feels truly Hawaiian, connecting you to the island’s volcanic past. It also offered a great opportunity to get out of the car, stretch our legs, and explore something new on the Road to Hana drive. Here’s everything you need to know about our experience at the Hana Lava Tube and how you can plan yours.

First Impressions and Arrival

Upon arrival, the Hana Lava Tube is so unassuming that you might actually miss it. The entrance consists only of a simple check-in table outside on what looked like a farm. The whole area is surrounded by open land, with a parking lot that seemed to double as an open field. There is a small building nearby, which looks like a shop, but we didn’t go in.

The check-in process is straightforward. A friendly man sat at the table, ready to welcome visitors. We didn’t book anything in advance, as the website says you don’t need to. According to their website, you can show up anytime during their open hours. However, the one thing to be cautious about is arriving on time. They won’t let you in if you arrive too close to closing, so plan accordingly.

The entry fee of $15 per person has to be paid in cash (kids 5 and under are free). There’s an ATM onsite if you need one. After paying, we were handed a set of flashlights and set off into the cave.

The Visit

To enter the Hana Lava Tube, you’ll first walk down a set of steps with a handrail. Stay close to little ones here, as it can be slippery with water dripping down in spots from the ground above. The lava tube is completely dark, and I mean pitch black. The temperature ranges between 66 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the year, and the humidity remains a constant 70%. Without a light source, it would be impossible to see anything. With kids, keep everyone close and keep your flashlights shining on the walking path. The floor of the cave is uneven in places, so be sure to watch your step.

The Lava Tube itself is self-guided. There is no rush, no tour guide hurrying us along, and no crowds. This allowed us to move at our own pace and take the time we needed to explore. Our kids really enjoyed how adventurous it felt to explore such a unique natural space.

Along the path, you’ll encounter features like ropey pahoehoe, lava level lines, and lava stalagmites, as well as unique geological structures such as contraction cracks, a cinder floor surface, and re-entry passages. The Hana Lava Tube is also home to fascinating blind cave insects like crickets, flatworms, and millipedes, although we didn’t encounter any. There are no bats and no mosquitoes unlike other types of caves, which is a huge bonus. Some areas of the cave have been given quirky names like the “chocolate corridor of stalactites” and “the bowling alley”.

Along the walking path, you’ll find information plaques scattered throughout the cave. Each plaque provided some interesting facts about the Lava Tube, its formation, and the volcanic activity that shaped it. Our older son was eager to play “tour guide” and read the details about what we were seeing.

The walk inside the Lava Tube is a roundtrip that takes around 40 minutes in total. After walking for a while, we reached a point in the cave where the tour operator’s property ended. There is a clear sign letting us know that this was as far as we could go, and it instructed us to turn around and head back the way we came. The tour was just the right length to keep everyone engaged.

Is the Hana Lava Tube worth it?

Yes! Our entire family enjoyed this off-the-beaten path adventure. The entire experience of venturing into an underground cave formed by lava was something we’d never experienced before and probably won’t soon again. It was also a great opportunity to break up the Road to Hana drive. For anyone planning to visit the Hana Lava Tube, here are a few helpful tips that will make your visit more enjoyable:

Bring Cash for the Entry Fee

As I mentioned earlier, you will need cash to pay the entry fee, so be sure to have some on hand before you arrive. There was an ATM onsite at the time of our visit should you need one.

Use the Flashlights Provided

The cave is in complete darkness, and you will not be able to see anything, including where you’re walking, without them. You should get one for everyone in your party, including the little ones.

Wear Appropriate Shoes

The ground inside the cave is uneven and can be slippery and wet in some spots, so make sure everyone is wearing shoes with grip. While it’s not a strenuous walk, you’ll want to feel stable on your feet, especially when walking with kids. Here are some of our favorite hiking essentials, including hiking sandals that are perfect for this excursion.

Prepare for Drips

It rained on and off while we were on the Road to Hana, as it often does in Maui, and despite the Hana Lava Tube being underground, you will get some leaky spots from the ground above. Most of us didn’t mind, but my little guy hates getting his head wet, so he was kind of bothered by the occasional drop landing on him. If that bothers you, wear a rain jacket with a hood inside the cave.

Check the Open Hours

The Hana Lava Tube is open for self-guided cave tours 7 days a week, 365 days a year, 10:30 am to 4:00 pm. Despite the wide offering of open days and times, it’s best to arrive 40 minutes before closing or more to make sure you can get in for the last tour of the day. The Road to Hana drive can be unpredictable in terms of timing and traffic, so do your best to plan ahead.

Great for All Ages

The self-guided nature of the tour makes it suitable for families with kids of all ages. You can take your time, explore at your own pace, and stop to rest whenever you need to. Just be sure to keep a close eye on younger children as the cave can be dark and the ground uneven. It’s also recommended that you have good vision and be physically fit for walking on natural terrain.

Where are the Lava Tubes in Hawaii?

To reach the Hana Lava Tube, start from Kahului and take the famous Hana Highway (Highway 360) heading toward Hana. After passing mile marker 31, make a left turn onto Ulaino Road. Continue driving for about 0.4 miles, and you’ll see the entrance to the Hana Lava Tube visitor center. If you’re traveling from West Maui areas like Lahaina or Ka’anapali, or from South Maui spots like Kihei or Wailea, plan for a drive time of around 3 hours to reach the lava tube. I highly recommend renting a car. Alternatively, you can book a Road to Hana guided tour.

Are there facilities in the Lava Tube?

Public restrooms are located outside the cave, so you’ll want to stop in before starting the tour. There are also picnic tables available.

Are there other things to do?

On the property you’ll find a Red Ti Botanical Garden Maze. It seems like a fun activity for adults and kids alike.
