Pensacola, located on Northwest Florida’s beautiful Gulf Coast, is one of the most family-friendly destinations for a vacation. Our Itinerary

I absolutely love the Gulf Coast of Florida for families. The sand is soft, the surf is gentle (no knocking littles down!), and the views are absolutely beautiful! While we’re no strangers to the Gulf Coast, this was our first visit to Pensacola, and we’re already planning our next trip back–we loved it! Here’s our detailed itinerary full of things to do in Pensacola with kids and some great tips to make the most of your own Pensacola Family Fun trip.

Day 1: Arrival, Beach, and Pensacola Beach Boardwalk

Arrival and Check-In

From the moment you land in Pensacola, you know you’re in for an adventure. The airport even has cockpits of the famous Blue Angel planes for kids to explore and get inside right next to baggage claim! After landing, we picked up our rental car, which is essential for getting around and exploring all that Pensacola has to offer, and we headed to our hotel.

After a gorgeous 25-minute drive over two beautiful bridges, we arrived at the Holiday Inn Resort Pensacola Beach, a family-friendly hotel right on the beach. Our room was ready early, so we were able to check in and get settled. Our room was on the seventh floor and featured the most spectacular view of the Gulf of Mexico. I barely wanted to leave that view, but I knew there was so much more to explore.

The room was well-appointed with two queen-sized beds, perfect for our family of four, a bathtub, which is essential for littles, a refrigerator, and a balcony. Being a part of the Holiday Inn family, kids eat and stay free here—a definite bonus for your travel budget.

We were thrilled to get to check in early, allowing us to head straight to the pool, but you can still take advantage of the property as a guest, even if your room isn’t ready. Just ask the reception staff to store your luggage until you can check in, and get changed in the lobby bathrooms.

The hotel pool is ideal for little swimmers, featuring a zero-entry that’s safe for kids to play without worry. The deepest part of the pool is only five feet, and there are fountains in the shallow waters that our boys loved playing in. Additionally, there’s a lazy river where you can float on tubes provided by the hotel. This was the perfect way to relax and enjoy the sun each day of our trip.

Lunch and Afternoon Activities

We grabbed a bite at the nearby Crabs Pensacola Beach, a beachfront restaurant that not only serves delicious seafood but also has a playground, where kids can have some fun while you enjoy your meal. If your family loves eating fish, Pensacola is the perfect place–most restaurant menus feature both local and imported catches. Our older son loved the grouper here, and I couldn’t resist the snow crab legs. Crabs also has a kids’ menu, which our youngest enjoyed.

We spent the afternoon enjoying the hotel’s pool and the beach right outside. The soft white sands and gentle waves of Pensacola Beach make it great for kids to play and for parents to relax. The hotel’s pool and the beach are connected by a short walkway over the dunes, so it is really easy to go back and forth, which the kids loved.

Evening at Pensacola Beach Boardwalk

We explored the Pensacola Beach Boardwalk in the evening. Here, you’ll find a variety of shops, eateries, and entertainment options. We had dinner at Flounder’s Chowder House, another kid-friendly restaurant with a playground. The inside is so eclectic with tons of fun memorabilia lining the walls and ceiling. Our boys even walked around at one point just to see what fun things were there! We were full after dinner, but if you want to treat the family to some sweet delights, head to Kilwins Pensacola Beach on the boardwalk, where you can enjoy ice cream, fudge, and other delicious treats. We also have a Kilwins near our house, and I can tell you that their treats are divine!

Don’t miss the chance to walk along the Boardwalk and shop, listen to live music, and catch the sunset. The best place to watch it is near the Quietwater Beach, which you can’t miss–a huge scallop shell statue/sign points out its location.

Day 2: U.S. Navy Blue Angels and National Naval Aviation Museum

We started day two with breakfast at our hotel, before getting an early start to the National Naval Aviation Museum, a must-see for families. The museum is a 30- to 45-minute drive from the beach area, but it is totally worth it! Our kids absolutely loved the museum—it’s huge, and you can touch almost everything! The interactive exhibits allow children to climb inside some of the planes, making it a hands-on experience. There is also a flight simulator, which looked exciting, but our kids didn’t meet the minimum height requirement.

The museum opens at 9:15 am, so it’s best to arrive early to avoid the crowds. Make sure to plan your visit around the Blue Angels practice, which starts at 10:30 am and lasts about an hour and a half. It’s a spectacular show, but be sure to bring protective ear covers, as the noise can be intense for little ones. The show takes place outside the museum, so make sure to bring sunscreen, a hat, and water as well. You can find more details about practice days on their site.

After the practice, we had the opportunity to meet the pilots and get autographs inside the museum! You can eat lunch right at the Museum at the Cubi Bar Café. The café offers simple options like sandwiches and soups, perfect for a quick family meal. The café is uniquely decorated with plaques from the former Cubi Point Officers’ Club in the Philippines, which closed after the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption. These plaques add a touch of naval history, making it an interesting spot to dine during your museum visit.

After exploring the museum, we returned to the hotel to enjoy a casual dinner and watch the sunset over the Gulf of Mexico from the biggest palapa bar on the beach. Pensacola is famous for its sunsets, and wow, they do not disappoint. The best part is that the kids could run around on the soft sand and dip their toes into the gentle surf while we parents enjoyed the colors dancing across the sky.

Once it starts to get a bit too dark to stay out on the beach, you can head back to the hotel for night swimming and a movie right on the pool deck. The hotel provides freshly popped popcorn for guests. While we were there, they showed family-friendly movies like Cars and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The pool closes at 10 pm, so you can even enjoy the movie from inside a tube in the lazy river! The pool lights up at night with changing colored lights. If the movie isn’t your thing, the pool area also features hammocks, swing chairs, and a fire pit for guests to enjoy.

Day 3: Exploring Historic Pensacola

Pensacola is the only destination in Northwest Florida with white sand beaches and a walkable historic downtown just 10 minutes away. So we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to explore the downtown. This morning, we started our day on Palafox Street, one of America’s top 10 streets, filled with shops, restaurants, bars, boutiques, and galleries. Most shops open at 10 am, but The Dog House, a local favorite known for its casual, family-friendly atmosphere, was open for breakfast. We sat outside, where we could really enjoy Palafox Street. The kids especially enjoyed the French toast bites and the doggies strolling up to get some treats and water outside the restaurant.

After breakfast, we headed to the Historic Pensacola District, a great spot full of Pensacola attractions for families. We visited:

Historic Pensacola: Here visitors can explore the rich heritage of America’s first European settlement–founded in 1559–through its 28 properties, museums, and guided tours. The kids especially loved the historic village and kitchen, where they rode a rocking horse carved onsite by hand and helped re-enactors tend to the garden.

Pensacola Children’s Museum, which offers interactive exhibits and hands-on learning experiences for kids, focusing on Pensacola’s 460+-year history. With two floors of activities, including a Colonial Classroom and a Native American Village. Our kids especially loved the Publix SuperMarket exhibit, where they could “shop” in a store just their size.

The Museum of Industry: The Museum showcases Pensacola’s early industries, including fishing, brick-making, lumber, and transportation. The museum is housed in the “Hispanic Building,” constructed in 1884 and featuring historical artifacts like timber processing equipment, a kiln used for brickmaking, and an old fishing boat. Our kids especially enjoyed the train display.

Admission to the museums of Historic Pensacola includes entry to the Pensacola Museum of Art, Pensacola Museum of History, Pensacola Children’s Museum, and others for seven days from the date of purchase. Tickets can be bought online or at Tivoli High House, and admission includes guided tours of historic houses such as Lavalle House and Old Christ Church. Visitor maps are available at all museum service desks. The admission prices are $12 for adults and $7 for children ages 4-14. Children 3 and younger are free.

After our visit, we headed back to the beach area to enjoy lunch at the Casino Beach Bar & Grille. Casino Beach Bar & Grille offers a relaxed beachside dining experience with island vibes, live entertainment, and a menu featuring Gulf Coast and Caribbean-inspired dishes. Located just steps from the beach, it’s a great spot to enjoy panoramic Gulf views, and there was also a giant Connect4 game for the kids to play with. After lunch, we spent the afternoon between the hotel pool and the beach.

Day 4: Pensacola Beach Pier and Farewell

We enjoyed a fresh, healthy start at Bear Fruit Bowls and Coffee at the Pensacola Beach Pier, known for its delicious açai bowls and coffee. We all tried different bases and toppings, but I personally think I chose the best. I went with the coconut base, peanut butter, bananas, chocolate nibs, granola, and Nutella. I am still dreaming about that bowl!

After breakfast, we took a stroll on the Pensacola Beach Pier. At 1,471 feet long, this pier offers views of the Gulf of Mexico and beach and is a nice place for a morning walk. You can also spot local wildlife, including various fish species and dolphins swimming in the distance. Our kids loved watching the fishermen reel in their catches, and our little guy was brave enough to touch one of the fish! Note that there is a fee to access the pier: $2.25 for observers, $7.50 for adult fishing, $4.50 for youth fishing, and children under 6 are free.

Final Moments in Pensacola

Before you leave, take one last dip in the hotel pool. This is a great opportunity to let the kids burn off some energy before traveling back home. The staff at the Holiday Inn made checkout a breeze, and I loved that it’s a little later than some other hotels at 11 am. That extra time allowed us to relax a little more on our last morning. The ride back to the airport takes you past the beach and Pensacola Bay, giving you a perfect opportunity to say “see you soon” to this beautiful, idyllic family vacation spot–I promise you’ll be back!

Additional Activities and Recommendations for Families in Pensacola

The itinerary we followed was designed to make the most of our 4-day trip with two young boys (ages 3 and 5). However, if you have more time or if your kids are a bit older, there are plenty of other activities to explore in Pensacola. Here are some additional activities and attractions that would make great additions to your Pensacola itinerary.

Pensacola Lighthouse and Maritime Museum

While we didn’t climb the 177 steps to the top, we were able to see the lighthouse from outside. Those who make the climb will admire the spectacular views of the Pensacola Pass.

Explore the Gulf Islands National Seashore and Fort Pickens

Located on the western tip of Santa Rosa Island, this national park is perfect for outdoor lovers. It offers overnight camping, scenic trails, and beautiful beaches. Fort Pickens is a massive brick fortress that once housed Union troops and the Apache leader Geronimo. Park rangers offer free tours daily. 

Laguna’s Adventure Park

This adventure park offers various activities for kids and adults alike. With everything from go-karts to mini-golf, it’s a fun place to let loose and enjoy some family-friendly excitement.

M.E.S.S. Hall

The Pensacola M.E.S.S. Hall is an interactive science museum that focuses on hands-on learning through experiments and creative problem-solving. It’s a fun, educational experience where visitors get to work like real scientists, developing questions and creating experiments, engaging in complex reasoning and learning science just through tinkering.

Dining Suggestions in Pensacola

Pensacola is a fantastic destination for seafood lovers (like our family!), especially those who enjoy fresh catches straight from the Gulf. With a wide variety of dining options located on Pensacola Beach and in downtown Pensacola, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. We truly enjoyed our trip to Pensacola, which was the perfect destination for our family of four. The Gulf Coast is friendly for kids, with gentle surf and soft white sand. Pensacola offers so much more than just the beach: engaging museums, unique experiences like watching the Blue Angels, and excellent restaurants to enjoy delicious food. We love hiking as a family, but it usually ends up being more of a nature walk than a serious hike with toddlers in tow. When we visited Zion during one of my pregnancies, we knew we’d have to take things slow and steady. Fortunately, we found three great hikes in Zion for beginner and intermediate hikers, whether you’re looking for that easy nature walk, something slightly more challenging, or more of a traditional hike with some elevation gain and spectacular views. Read on to find the best one for you. 

If you are planning hikes in Zion while pregnant, it helps so much to know what your body can handle in each trimester. That post covers nausea-friendly travel days, when to schedule more rest and essential items for each trimester, so it is a great place to start if Zion is part of your babymoon planning.

How to choose beginner-friendly hikes in Zion as a family

Before you pick a trail, think about what kind of day you want in the park. Some hikes in Zion are long, narrow, and very exposed, while others are shorter, shaded, and close to the shuttle stops. With kids or a pregnancy in the mix, I like to think through a few questions:

• How much time do we actually want to spend on the trail, including snack breaks and photo stops
• Do we have a carrier or stroller, or will kids be walking the entire route
• How comfortable are we with drop offs and heights
• What time of day will give us the most shade and the coolest temperatures

The three hikes in this post are a nice middle ground. They give you classic Zion scenery without the intense exposure or all day effort of some of the more famous routes. If you are trying to build a whole trip around family friendly hikes in Zion, you can easily pair one of these with a slower afternoon at the lodge or a scenic drive through the park.

For families traveling while pregnant, I also like to build in true rest days. Maybe you hike Lower Emerald Pool one morning, then spend the next day doing scenic overlooks, nap time, and an early dinner instead of stacking multiple big hikes in Zion back to back.

Lower Emerald Pool Trail

Best for: true beginners, anyone with mobility concerns (this trail is wheelchair and stroller accessible), toddlers or kids who will not be in a carrier

This beautiful 1.4-mile out and back trail walks along a river in a valley between two mountain peaks. The terrain is mostly flat along the river bed, and your views will mostly be up into the mountains. As you progress along the trail, the terrain is paved with a slight elevation gain. There is some shade, especially in the early afternoon, and you can see a waterfall depending on precipitation levels. The waterfalls often have strong flow during spring runoff or after a recent rain storm, but may be down to a trickle during the drier summer months.

Tips for Lower Emerald Pool with kids and pregnancy

• Try to start early in the morning or later in the afternoon so the sun feels gentler
• Pack simple, easy to eat snacks that you can hand to kids without stopping for a long break
• Use the stroller as long as you can, then switch to a carrier if your toddler gets tired
• Bring a light layer or sun shirt, since shaded canyon sections can feel cooler than the forecast

If you are in your first trimester and still dealing with nausea, this can be a great test run. You get to enjoy one of the most beautiful beginner hikes in Zion without committing to a long, steep climb.

Middle Emerald Pools Trail

Best for: anyone who wants more of a challenge, toddlers in carriers, older children, those interested in a longer hike.

There is a lot to see on this moderate difficulty trail, which is a 2.2-mile hike along an unpaved path above the Lower Emerald Pool Trail. The Middle Emerald Pools Trail is where the two streams that form the waterfall converge. The trail will take you underneath the waterfall. This is thought to be one of the most beautiful hikes in the area, and there’s a great chance you’ll spot wildlife on this hike.

Middle Emerald Pools with kids: practical tips

• Plan to carry toddlers or preschoolers in a structured hiking carrier since the terrain is uneven
• Remind older kids to take their time on rocky sections and to watch their footing near drop offs
• Pack a small towel or an extra shirt if your kids love getting misted by the waterfall
• Build in a quiet snack break at one of the viewpoints so everyone gets a little reset before heading back

Because Middle Emerald Pools connects with other trails in the area, it can work nicely as part of a bigger day with older kids or teens.

Skip Upper Emerald Pool

There is an Upper Emerald Pool Trail. The Upper Trail is the most strenuous of the three and not recommended for beginner or intermediate hikers. It is the trail in Zion with the most injuries. You do not have to continue to that portion if your skills don’t allow.

Even if you feel tempted to “just see how far we get,” I recommend listening to your body here, especially if you are pregnant or carrying a child. It is perfectly fine to turn around at Middle Emerald Pools, enjoy the views you already earned, and save that extra push for a future visit.

Pro tip: Both of these trails are accessible via shuttle from the main Zion Park parking lot. The lot typically fills up by 8 am on nice weather days, holidays, and weekends. If the lot is full, parking anywhere along the road in town that does not have parking restrictions is permissible. Look for “Shuttle Parking” signs throughout town for shuttle stops that will take you to the park entrance. If there’s no town parking, park at Zion Park Lot 445 Zion Park Boulevard (11 minute walk to park entrance).

Canyon Overlook Trail

Best for: spectacular views, those who want a quick yet challenging hike, toddlers in low profile carriers (there are some sections where you’ll have rocks overhead: I do not recommend toddlers walking this one on their own), older children

This 1-mile out and back trail is short, but moderately challenging and the views are stunning. It will only take you about 30 minutes to hike, but you may spend just as long gazing at the amazing vista at the top. There is quite a bit of elevation gained, as you’re mainly hiking up, and there are some narrow trail sections including overhead rocks. This wouldn’t be ideal for anyone afraid of heights, but is great for those who want those amazing views and a little thrill on the way up. 

Why Canyon Overlook is one of the best short hikes in Zion

If you have seen photos of Zion from above, there is a good chance they were taken somewhere near the end of this trail. For such a short route, the payoff is huge. Because there are drop offs and narrow sections, this is not the trail where I would let toddlers walk freely.

Safety tips for Canyon Overlook

• Use a low profile carrier so you are not worrying about bumping a child’s head on overhead rocks
• Keep one hand free so you can steady yourself on rocky or uneven sections
• Talk through trail etiquette with kids before you start, including waiting for others to pass on narrow ledges
• Plan extra time at the overlook at the top so you can sit, breathe, and soak up the view before heading back down

Pro tip: The trailhead is a collection of stone steps across the street from a parking lot. The parking lot is on south side, and the trailhead is across street on the north side of road. Follow Hwy 9 to the east entrance of Mount Carmel Tunnel, directly below the East Temple Saddle.

You cannot make a left turn into the parking lot if you’re coming from the east, but there is parking along the road about a quarter mile before you reach the parking lot. The parking lot is quite small and can fill up quickly, so this is a good hike to take either first thing in the morning or later in the day once other hikers have left. 

Bonus: If you’re hungry for lunch, try Zion Brewing Company near the main park entrance. The views from the patio are amazing!

Packing list for easy hikes in Zion

A little preparation goes a long way on any of these hikes in Zion. Here are some simple items I like to have ready in our daypack:

• Lightweight, refillable water bottles for kids and adults
• Sun hats and sunglasses for everyone, even on cooler days
• Snacks that do not melt quickly: granola bars, crackers, fruit pouches
• A compact first aid kit with bandages, kids’ pain relief, and blister care
• A light rain jacket or sun shirt that can handle mist from waterfalls
• A change of clothes for younger kids, especially if they love splashing in puddles

If you are expecting, add anything that makes your day more comfortable: compression socks, a small pillow for the car ride back to your hotel, or the specific snacks that help keep nausea at bay.

Final thoughts

Zion can feel like a park of bucket list, once in a lifetime trails, but not every day has to be a huge challenge. These three beginner friendly hikes in Zion are proof that you can see incredible scenery while still being kind to your body and your kids’ energy levels.

If I were planning a long weekend, I would choose one hike in Zion for each morning, pair it with a relaxed afternoon at the lodge, and build in one full rest day where we stick to scenic drives and easy viewpoints. That rhythm works beautifully in pregnancy and with young kids, and it keeps everyone excited for the next adventure instead of wiped out.

Our boys were deep in their Peppa Pig phase when we first discovered Peppa Pig Theme Park Florida. It was right along the route of our Florida road trip, presenting a perfect opportunity to visit. Spoiler alert: They LOVED it! And we’ve actually been back twice.

What is Peppa Pig Theme Park Florida?

Peppa Pig Theme Park Florida is a standalone park located right next to LEGOLAND Florida in Winter Haven. While LEGOLAND caters to slightly older kids, Peppa Pig Theme Park is designed specifically for kids ages three to seven, although we saw kids up to 12 enjoying it both times we went. If your little one is a Peppa fan, this place will be pure magic.

Unlike major theme parks that can feel overwhelming, Peppa Pig Theme Park Florida is small, easy to navigate, and completely geared toward young kids. There are gentle rides, interactive play areas, live shows, and character meet-and-greets, all without the massive crowds and long lines you’d expect at a place like nearby Walt Disney World.

The park’s theming is amazing! The attention to detail is incredible, staying true to the show. The waiting areas and rides are all designed around various moments from the series, complete with character voiceovers, which really help you feel immersed in Peppa Pig’s world.

What to Expect at Peppa Pig Theme Park Florida

Everything is designed with young children in mind, including gentle rides, interactive play spaces, and engaging live entertainment. Whether your little one is a thrill-seeker or prefers low-key play, there’s something here to make their day extra special.

• Fun Fair – Classic fairground-style games like ring toss.
• George’s Fort – A playful maze perfect for tiny explorers.
• Grandpa Pig’s Greenhouse – An interactive garden-themed playground.
• Madame Gazelle’s Nature Trail – A cute scavenger hunt where kids can follow clues and discover surprises. My younger son loved seeing the character statues here and walked around hugging them!
• Muddy Puddles Splash Pad – Cool off with fountains, splash zones, and slides. Don’t forget a bathing suit to change into and towels! We prefer to do this last, so that our kids don’t need to walk around the park wet.

Rides with Height Restrictions

• Peppa Pig’s Balloon Ride – Float up, up, and away in this family-friendly ride. Kids under 51″ need a grown-up along for the ride. Peppa Pig’s Balloon Ride is a perfect recreation of The Balloon Ride episode, and this level of detail throughout the park really made it special for true fans of the show.
• Daddy Pig’s Roller Coaster – A gentle coaster perfect for first-time riders. This was my older son’s aboslute favorite and he asked to ride it more than once. Kids must be at least 36″ tall, and those under 42″ will need a grown-up to join them.
• Grampy Rabbit’s Dinosaur Adventure – Take a ride on a dinosaur with Grampy Rabbit! Kids must be 34″ tall, and those under 47″ will need an adult buddy. My younger son is very into all kinds of vehicles, and this was the perfect pace for him. Kiddos under 43″ or under age 4 will need an adult to join in.
• Mr. Bull’s High Striker – A mini drop ride with just the right amount of excitement! Riders must be 36″ tall, and those under 43″ will need an adult sidekick.

Live Shows & Character Experiences

Character meet-and-greets and live shows are offered throughout the day at Peppa Pig Theme Park Florida, consider the following approaches. To get the day’s schedule, stop by the Guest Services booth near the entrace of the park. They offer daily entertainment schedules and park maps.

Mr. Potato’s Showtime Arena

Standard parking can also be purchased on-site at the toll booth, which opens about 30 minutes before the park. Disability parking is conveniently located near the guest entrance. There is only one main food court, Miss Rabbit’s Diner, and while the menu is kid-friendly, it gets crowded during peak hours. Here’s a look at some of the options:

Yes! Guests can rent strollers, ECVs, and wheelchairs at Mr. Fox’s Shop inside the park.

Tips for Visiting Peppa Pig Theme Park Florida

1. Go on a weekday: We visited on a Monday the first time and waited no longer than 15 minutes for any ride.
2. Pack swimsuits & towels: The Muddy Puddles Splash Pad turns into a water park in hot weather! Make sure to bring a bathing suit and towel. We prefer to do this last, so the kids aren’t wet walking around the park.
3. Arrive early: You can easily experience the entire park in 3-4 hours, so getting there early ensures a relaxed visit. We arrived about 30 minutes after park opening, and we were able to get in all of the rides at least once, plus see a show, and play in the sand and splash pad all before lunch time.
4. Ask for Fast Passes: Some staff members hand out free paper Fast Passes for the rides. Be extra nice, and you might be able to snag one! We were lucky enough to be gifted one, which we used on Daddy Pig’s Roller Coaster.
5. It’s NOT Disney (and that’s a good thing): No massive crowds, no long waits just pure fun.

Where to Stay Near Peppa Pig Theme Park Florida

We stayed at Exploria Resorts, and it was a great budget-friendly option! Here’s why we loved it:

• 2-bedroom condo with a foldout couch (plenty of space!)
• Pirate-themed play area for the kids
• Multiple pools for cooling off
• Amazing price: We got a steal at $350 for 5 nights (compared to $1,000+ for 4 nights at a Disney hotel)

Safety Tips for Exploring Peppa Pig Theme Park Florida

Ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience is just as important as the fun itself. With young children in mind, the park is designed to be family-friendly and easy to navigate. However, from staying hydrated to following ride guidelines, there are a few key safety tips to keep in mind during your visit.

Here’s how to make the most of your day:

1. Stay Hydrated: Florida’s heat can be intense, especially in warmer months. Bring refillable water bottles and take breaks in shaded areas. You can refill your water bottle at the water fountains located near the restrooms. Our family prefers these Water Bottles for kids and these Water Bottles for adults

2. Apply Sunscreen: Even on cloudy days, UV rays can be strong. Apply sunscreen before entering the park and reapply throughout the day. This is our favorite. Also, don’t forget to wear a hat!

3. Use a Stroller for Young Kids: The park is small, but little legs can get tired quickly. A stroller helps keep toddlers comfortable and safe in crowded areas. You can rent one on site or take your own. Here’s our recommended lightweight double stroller we travel with.

4. Set a Meeting Spot: If your child wanders off, having a designated spot to meet can help reunite you quickly. Point out staff members who can assist if needed.

5. Follow Ride Height and Safety Rule: Each ride has specific height and supervision requirements. Make sure your child meets the guidelines before lining up.

6. Keep an Eye on the Splash Pad: The Muddy Puddles Splash Pad is a fun water play area, but it can be slippery. Stay close to your child while they play. The first time we visited, it was a bit chaotic with kids running in every direction and water spraying everywhere. It felt a little overwhelming, especially for younger children. However, on our second visit, the area was much better organized with staff appointed throughout to help the flow.

7. Watch for Character Crowds: Meet-and-greet areas can get busy. Hold your child’s hand and be patient when waiting in line for character interactions.

8. Use a Wristband or ID Tag: For extra safety, place a wristband or tag with your contact information on your child in case you get separated, there are reusable. I also recommend Air Tags and pair them with sturdy and secure holders. These are great for clipping onto your child’s clothes, and these are good to tie on shoelaces. Anti-lost wrist links can provide peace of mind and an added layer of safety.

9. Follow Park Guidelines and Staff Instructions: Park staff are there to help. Follow all posted signs and listen to their directions to ensure a safe and fun experience.

If your child is a Peppa Pig fan, this park is a must-visit. It’s budget-friendly, easy to navigate, and perfect for toddlers. Unlike bigger theme parks, it won’t leave you exhausted, and the smaller crowds make it a stress-free day. It is also an amazing experience gift for kids.

If you’re dreaming of the Grand Canyon but it’s just out of reach, Providence Canyon in Lumpkin, Georgia, often called “Georgia’s Little Grand Canyon,” might be the perfect alternative for your next family adventure. Located just two hours south of Atlanta, this national park offers a chance to explore stunning canyons without having to travel out west. It’s an excellent destination for families looking to experience nature, get a little muddy, and enjoy a day of adventure.

Why Visit Providence Canyon?

Providence Canyon is a hidden gem in the heart of Georgia. It’s a remarkable place that provides an impressive canyon landscape, making it a perfect day trip for families. While it doesn’t have the vastness of the Grand Canyon, its colors and unique formations are a sight to behold. The Canyon’s fascinating history and accessibility make it a fun activity for anyone in the area and a must go hiking trail for families who love adventure.

How Was Providence Canyon Formed?

Providence Canyon is the result of a human-made mistake. The canyon’s unique formations resulted from poor farming practices in the 1800s. Farmers cleared the land without considering the impact on the environment, leading to significant soil erosion. Rainwater began to erode the soil, carving deep gullies some reaching three to five feet in just 30 years and now up to 150 feet deep in places!

The canyon was named after the Providence Methodist Church built in 1832, where Canyon 2 is now; the church had to be moved in 1859 as erosion threatened to swallow it whole.

Tips for Making the Most of Your Hike

When planning your visit to Providence Canyon, there are a few things to keep in mind to make the most of your time.

1. Plan for a Full Day: To fully enjoy Providence Canyon, you’ll want to set aside a full day. Even the shorter trails that lead into the canyon can take several hours to explore, especially if you’re visiting with young children. We left Atlanta at around 8:30 am, arrived by 11 am, and spent the day hiking until about 4 pm, including a break for lunch onsite.

2. Dress for Adventure: The trails at Providence Canyon are wet and muddy due to water runoff, so it’s essential to wear dark clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Hiking boots or waterproof shoes are a must, especially if your kids are anything like mine and enjoy splashing around in the mud. These are the hiking boots we use and recommend. Make sure to bring a change of clothes for the drive home and consider packing 1 or 2 large trash bags to store muddy clothing.

3. Family-Friendly Trails: Providence Canyon State Park trails are perfect for families, even those with younger children. To reach the Canyon floor, you’ll start with a short 0.25-mile descent from the Park Office. Once at the bottom, the paths are completely flat. Our 5 year old was able to hike the entire way, with only a bit of difficulty on the elevated section leading out of the Canyon. Our 2 year old managed to hike about 80% of the trail on his own, but we were glad we brought a soft carrier for the times he needed a little help. Here is the soft carrier we use.

4. Our Favorites Trails to Explore: If you have limited time, prioritize hiking Canyons 4, 5, and 8. These trails offer some of the most spectacular views and are a hit with kids. The upper rim trail to the left of the Interpretive Center is also worth exploring, but I recommend only going as far as the old church for the best experience (the entire way around is a longer hike and should only be done if you plan to camp). The other trails, while beautiful, aren’t as impressive as these highlights.

5. Pack Your Own Snacks and Meals: We love enjoying a picnic in nature, and Providence Canyon offers several picnic tables near the parking area where you can rest and eat. While the Interpretive Center sells snacks like trail mix and ice cream, they don’t offer full meals, so be sure to bring your own lunch and plenty of water for your hike. Our family prefers these reusable water bottles for kids and water bottles for adults.

6. Providence Canyon State Park Tickets: One of the great things about Providence Canyon is its affordability. The park entry fee is just $5 per car, making it an inexpensive way to spend a day outdoors with your family. Plus, with its proximity to Atlanta, it’s a convenient day trip that doesn’t require extensive planning or preparation.

Additional Recommendations for Your Visit

• Arrive Early: To get the most out of your day at Providence Canyon, try to arrive as early as possible. This is especially important if you’re planning to see as much of the park as possible in one day. The park is best enjoyed with plenty of time to explore.

• Bring a Car: You’ll need your own car to visit Providence Canyon, as there are no guided tours or public transportation options that go directly to the park. This also gives you the flexibility to leave whenever you’re ready, making it easier to manage your family’s needs throughout the day. If you are traveling from outside the area, you can rent a car here

Not a Hiker? No Problem

You can still enjoy the beauty of Providence Canyon without hiking! There are several scenic viewpoints right near the park’s entrance, where you can park and take in the breathtaking views without hitting the trails.

The Rim Trail offers easy access to these overlooks, starting from the Visitor Center. If you prefer to relax, the Visitor Center is also a great spot with rocking chairs, picnic areas, restrooms, water fountains, and vending machines, perfect for enjoying while others in your group hike.

What You Need to Know for Your Visit

Where is Providence Canyon State Park?

The park is located at 8930 Canyon Road, Lumpkin, GA 31815, in Stewart County.

If you’re using a GPS to find Providence Canyon, enter the coordinates N 32.064445, W -84.921913.

Providence Canyon Opening Hours

Georgia’s “Little Grand Canyon” has different operating hours depending on the season. From September 15 to April 14, the park is open from 7 am to 6 pm During the warmer months, from April 15 to September 14, the park extends its hours from 7 am to 9 pm.

The Visitor Center is open daily from 8 am to 5 pm, providing information, maps, and exhibits about the park’s history and geology.

Providence Canyon Parking Fee and Tickets

Parking for the day at Providence Canyon costs $5 per vehicle and includes the entry to the park. Overnight guests pay only one night’s parking fee for the duration of their stay via a ParkPass. ParkPasses are not included in camping reservations fees and may be purchased at the Visitor Center at check-in. Annual passes are also available. To buy an Annual ParkPass, visit any Georgia State Park office or buy a ParkPass online (allow 7–10 business days for shipping).

Where to Stay When Visiting Providence Canyon State Park

While we didn’t camp during our visit, Providence Canyon does offer campsites for those interested in spending the night. The park has two camping options: three Pioneer Campsites and six Backcountry Campsites.

You can reserve Pioneer Campsites here and Backcountry Campsites here.

Before making any reservation, you should call the park to check capacity limits. If you want to do a Backcountry experience, you must arrive before the gate closes and before dark.

If camping isn’t your style, nearby Columbus, GA is a good place to stay. It’s close enough for a quick drive to the Canyon, and you can find a variety of options, from budget-friendly motels to more comfortable hotels. Consider booking a room through Booking.com for the best deals and a range of choices.

There is also a Hyatt Place, which is our preferred place to stay at and a hotel brand we love. Hyatt Places generally sleep up to six people and include free breakfast and onsite parking, making them very family-friendly.

Things to Do Near Providence Canyon

If you’re staying near Georgia’s “Little Grand Canyon” for more than one day, there are some attractions, that you might want to check out:

• Jimmy Carter National Historic Site and Museum: Just a short drive away, this site offers a glimpse into the early life and influences of the 39th President of the United States. It’s a great stop for those interested in presidential history.

• Coca-Cola Space Science Center: Located in Columbus, GA, this center boasts Georgia’s largest collection of NASA Space Shuttle artifacts. You can enjoy planetarium shows, stargazing, and interactive exhibits.

• National Infantry Museum: Also in Columbus, this museum covers over 240 years of American military history with immersive exhibits.

• Florence Marina State Park: If you’re looking for more outdoor activities, Florence Marina State Park is nearby and offers additional campsites, fishing, and boating opportunities.

• Kolomoki Mounds: For those interested in ancient history, the Kolomoki Mounds offer a chance to explore the largest and oldest Woodland Indian site in the southeastern United States.

• Civil War Naval Museum: This museum provides insights into naval history during the Civil War.

Final Tips for Your Trip

• Plan for the Weather: Check the weather forecast before your visit to ensure you’re prepared for any conditions. Summer days can be hot, so bring plenty of water and sun protection, while winter months might require warmer clothing.

The Historic Pensacola Village, nestled in the city’s Historic District, became an unexpected highlight. With its beautifully preserved buildings, immersive museums, and interactive exhibits, it’s a must-visit for history lovers and families alike. Palafox Street

We kicked off our day with a stroll down Palafox Street, one of America’s top 10 streets, known for its shops, restaurants, and galleries. Although most stores open at 10 am, we found a perfect breakfast spot at The Dog House, a local favorite with a casual, family-friendly vibe. We sat outside, enjoying the street scene and watching dogs stop by for treats and water. The kids loved the French toast bites.

Palafox Street is the heart of downtown Pensacola; it blends the city’s rich history with its modern-day energy. Named after General Jose de Palafox y Melzi, it features a mix of Spanish, French, and British architectural influences, creating a European charm right in the heart of Florida. The street is home to boutiques, art galleries like Blue Morning Gallery, and various dining options. Visitors can also enjoy the waterfront views at the southern end, where Jaco’s Bayfront Bar & Grille overlooks Palafox Pier and the Plaza de Luna, a waterfront park perfect for family fun. The street truly represents the spirit of downtown Pensacola.

Historic Pensacola

Historic Pensacola encompasses 8.5 acres of history and culture, with 30 properties that reflect the city’s past. Out of these, 12 properties are open to the public. What truly sets Historic Pensacola apart is how family-friendly the experience is.

You can find the Historic Pensacola map here. It offers a detailed guide to the Historic District, showcasing the properties spread across 8.5 acres. The map is designed to guide visitors through the district in the easiest and most efficient way.

Historic Pensacola Village

Historic Pensacola Village offers a glimpse into the rich heritage of America’s first multi-year European settlement, founded in 1559. It covers the original footprints of Spanish and British forts in downtown Pensacola. Visitors can enjoy self-guided or guided tours of historic homes like the Lavalle House and Old Christ Church, as well as interact with living history interpreters dressed in period attire.

The kids loved the historic village and kitchen, where they got to ride a hand-carved rocking horse and even assist re-enactors with the garden.

Historic Pensacola Village is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 am until 4:00 pm.

Pensacola Children’s Museum

For families with young children, the Pensacola Children’s Museum is an absolute must-visit.

This museum is an interactive, educational space designed for children 8 and under, offering two floors of hands-on learning. The first floor, known as the Discovery Gallery, is a miniature version of historic Pensacola, where kids can explore pint-sized houses, trade at the Panton Trading Post, or guard a fort. There’s also a Kiddie Corral for toddlers, providing a safe, age-appropriate area for the youngest visitors.

On the second floor, older children can step into the past with exhibits like the Colonial Classroom, where they can experience what school was like over a hundred years ago. Another popular attraction is the Publix Super Market, a child-sized grocery store where kids can pretend to shop or stock shelves (our kids’ favorite activity in the museum).

The museum’s newest exhibit, Land and Sea: Wonders of the Gulf Coast, teaches children about local wildlife and the connection between land and water through interactive play. The Pensacola Children’s Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and on Sundays from noon to 4:00 pm. It is closed on Mondays.

Museum of Industry

The Museum of Industry in Pensacola offers a glimpse into the industries that were crucial to the city’s growth during the 19th century. Located in the historic 1877 Pensacola Ice Company building, the museum highlights key industries like lumbering, brickmaking, railroads, and commercial fishing. Through a self-guided tour, visitors can see authentic equipment used in these industries, such as timber processing tools, kilns for brickmaking, and an old fishing boat.

The museum is a popular stop for families and history enthusiasts. Our kids particularly enjoy the interactive displays, including a detailed train model that showcases how railroads played a key role in transporting goods. The museum’s exhibits offer a well-rounded look at how these industries transformed Pensacola into a commercial center.

The Museum of Industry Pensacola is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, and is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Historic Pensacola Village Tickets

With a “One Ticket, Seven Days to Explore” system, you can visit the Pensacola Children’s Museum, the Pensacola Museum of Industry, Historic Pensacola Village, and all the museums and sites within the district.

1. Wear comfortable shoes: You’ll be doing quite a bit of walking, so be sure to wear comfortable footwear.
2. Pack snacks and water: While there are plenty of places to stop and eat, it’s a good idea to have snacks and water on hand, especially if you’re traveling with kids. Our family prefers these reusable water bottles:

If you’re planning a family road trip between Nashville and Atlanta or find yourself near Chattanooga, there’s one activity that should absolutely make your list: Ruby Falls. It’s not just another tourist attraction, but rather a breathtaking underground waterfall housed in a cave system that’s only been known to people for less than 100 years. A fun outing for the whole family and great stop to break up time in the car or other activities, Ruby Falls cave walk is kid-friendly and weather-proof. Let’s dig in.

Who Discovered Ruby Falls?

Ruby Falls, located deep inside Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, Tennessee, is one of the most breathtaking underground waterfalls in the U.S. Discovered by accident in 1928 by Leo Lambert, Ruby Falls was named after his wife named (you guessed it!) Ruby.

While excavating to reopen the nearby Lookout Mountain Cave, Leo’s team found a hidden cavern that led to the 145-foot underground waterfall now known as Ruby Falls. This discovery turned the cave system into a place where travelers and locals can visit all year round.

Today, Ruby Falls offers more than just the cave walk to the waterfall. The site includes adventure activities like zip lining, rock climbing, and scenic views atop Lookout Mountain, in addition to an opportunity to learn a whole lot about rock science.

Our Experience

We took the Ruby Falls cave walk on the drive back from Nashville to Atlanta on a road trip for my birthday. We saw a sign for it on the drive out to Nashville and made a mental note to stop on teh way home, but we had a bit of a hiccup in our plans… there were no entry tickets available for the next two hours. Oops! Lesson learned: make reservations ahead of time. We didn’t and had to wait, so learn from our mistake.

By the time we arrived, all available tickets were sold out for the next two hours. That meant we had to do some waiting around, which led to a quick visit to Chick-fil-A (a lifesaver with kids!). Waiting for two hours wasn’t ideal, but it gave us some time to refuel, stretch out, and get the kids ready for the adventure.

Once our tour time finally rolled around, we were ready to see what the cave walk had to offer. Kid-friendly? Yes! But there are some things to note. First off, remember: this is a cave, so leave your white clothes and shoes at home. The cave itself is dusty.

Our kids, who were 4 and 2 years old at the time, handled the whole experience like little adventurers. I was nervous at first about how well they’d do, but they both walked the entire way in and out of the cave. My husband did carry our youngest (who had just turned 2) for a short stretch on the way back, but overall, they managed quite well. That being said, by the end of the tour, they were pretty wiped out. It’s a long walk for little legs.

One thing that stood out to me during the tour was the group dynamic. Our tour group had a mix of couples, families, and individuals, but we were the only ones with young kids. This wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I could tell that not all of the tour guides were as tolerant of the “kid factor” as others. It wasn’t a huge deal, but if Ruby Falls wants to consistently attract families, it’s something they might want to address. Kids are kids, and they’re going to talk, explore, and move at their own pace. Thankfully, my kids didn’t notice the occasional side glances from the guide, and they had a great time regardless.

So what makes the Ruby Falls cave walk special? It’s not just about the underground waterfall. The cave itself is full of natural beauty, and the tour provides details about the history and discovery of the Falls. There’s also a love story, which was a nice touch for us adults, even though it definitely went right over the kids’ heads. By the end of the tour, we were tired but happy with what we had just seen. Ruby Falls is one of those places where you can really appreciate nature. It’s also a reminder of the incredible things that can be found just beneath the surface.

The Tour Experience – Ruby Falls Cave Walk

Once our tour time rolled around, we headed into Lookout Mountain for the cave walk. Before heading down into the cave that houses Ruby Falls, make sure everyone uses the restroom. Once you descend, there are no facilities available during the walk. The staff advises all visitors to take a bathroom break beforehand, and it’s worth the quick stop before starting the adventure.

The whole experience starts with an elevator ride down 26 stories into the mountain, which was already exciting for the kids. The elevator has a glass front so you see the rock from the mountain as you go down. The elevator itself only takes about 30 seconds.

Once we reached the bottom, the tour guide gathered everyone and gave a brief introduction about what we were about to see.

The entire Ruby Falls cave walk is about a mile round trip, and while that doesn’t sound too bad, it’s important to note that you’re walking on uneven ground, and the path is often narrow with a low ceiling. My husband and I had to keep a close eye on our kids because there were a few spots where it would be easy to trip or stumble. And at nearly 6-feet tall, my husband had to watch his head at times. That said, the kids and adults loved playing cave explorer.

The walk through the cave is fascinating, as you pass by incredible formations like stalagmites and stalactites. You might even get a lucky “cave kiss”: a drop of water landing on you from the ceiling. Along the way, the guide makes brief stops to point out unique formations before you finally reach the stunning waterfall.

Ruby Falls’ height is 145 feet tall, and it’s one of the largest underground waterfalls in the United States that’s open to the public. The moment you first see it, illuminated by the tour’s special lighting effects, it’s breathtaking. The water cascades down from a narrow opening high above, and because of the lighting and the enclosed space, it feels almost surreal.

The guide allowed everyone some time to take pictures and just soak in the atmosphere. Due to the timed entry tickets, your time at the waterfall is limited. I think we had 10 minutes before the lights were turned off, so you have to snap your pictures and videos quickly! But be warned—they don’t give any extra time. As soon as the timer runs out, the lights go off, and the waterfall disappears into the darkness!

The walk back out of the cave was similar to the journey in, but the kids were definitely starting to feel tired by this point. My husband ended up carrying our youngest for a short while, which was fine, but it’s something to consider if you have younger kids. The entire walk, including the stops to see formations and the falls, took about an hour and a half.

The tour is suitable for all ages, but keep in mind that it lasts around 90 minutes, so participants should be comfortable standing and walking for that length of time.

Practical Tips from a Parent

To make your Ruby Falls cave walk as family-friendly as possible, here are a few practical tips based on our experience:

• Make reservations ahead of time!
• Be prepared for tired kiddos by the end of the walk, and consider a carrier for the youngest ones. The carrier should sit on your back or chest, though, not above you, as the cave ceiling is low. We love this carrier for kids up to 45 pounds.
• The cave walk is well-paced, but keep an eye on kiddos in the narrow passages.
• Wear comfortable clothes and shoes but not to wear white or light-colored clothes.
• Inside the cave maintains a steady temperature of around 60°F year-round. If you tend to get cold easily, bring a light jacket or sweater to stay comfortable during the walk.
• Make sure everyone takes a bathroom break before the walk starts.
• Bring snacks and water: While you can’t eat inside the cave itself, having some snacks and water in the car or at the visitor’s center is a great way to recharge before or after the tour.

Located just minutes from downtown, the Chattanooga Zoo offers a fun and educational experience. It’s small enough to navigate easily with kids, but there’s plenty to see, including exotic animals like red pandas, jaguars, and chimpanzees.

When is the Best Time of Year to Visit Oahu with Kids?

Oahu can get quite crowded, so be ready for traffic and busy spots at high season. To avoid the crowds, consider visiting during the “shoulder season,” which includes April, May, September, and October. These months offer great weather and fewer tourists, making for a more relaxed experience. If you’re interested in whale watching, plan your trip between January and March, when humpback whales are often seen off the coast. This way, you can enjoy both a quieter island and the chance to see whales in their natural habitat. We visited in February and got to watch whales from the shore on several days of our trip!

Where should you stay?

During our visit to Oahu, we stayed at the Hyatt Place Waikiki, which we found to be an excellent choice for families. The hotel’s location is ideal, just a short walk from Waikiki Beach and near several shops and restaurants. This allowed us to explore the area easily on foot.

Our room was spacious, with two queen beds and a separate living area with a foldout couch that provided plenty of space for our family of four (the rooms sleep up to six). The highlight was our Mountain View room. Waking up to the views of Diamond Head Crater was a beautiful way to start each day. The hotel also offers a range of amenities perfect for families, including free daily breakfast, an outdoor pool, and complimentary Wi-Fi, making it a comfortable base for our adventures.

The Hyatt Place Waikiki also features a 24/7 fitness center and provides facilities like computers for public use, event spaces, and a lobby bar with food and drink options. They welcome pets, have a laundry service available, and offer paid parking, which was convenient for our needs. This 1.6-mile round-trip hike up Diamond Head Crater is moderately challenging, with steep inclines, switchbacks, and a few staircases. While the trail is not particularly long, it does require a good level of fitness and the ability to handle heights, as there are several sections with steep drop-offs. While our 5 year old managed the hike well, our 3 year old needed to be carried for much of the way. Last but not least, I wanted to share our list of essentials to take to your Oahu with Kids vacation to ensure you are prepared for various activities and weather conditions.

5. Daypack: A small backpack for day trips and excursions.

7. Electronics: Waterproof phone cases, camera gear, chargers, and portable power banks.
8. Documents: ID, credit cards, travel insurance information, and copies of reservations or confirmations.
9. Extras: A lightweight rain jacket (for tours like Kualoa Ranch), snacks, and a travel guide or map of the islands.

If you’re planning a visit to Pensacola, Florida, one of the top attractions you absolutely can’t miss is the Blue Angels practice at the National Naval Aviation Museum. After watching this thrilling show, I highly recommend taking time to see the live show and visit the museum. Let’s dive in!

Watching the Blue Angels Practice

Pensacola is home to the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, the world-famous flight demonstration squadron. While many people across the country get to see their incredible airshows only once or twice a year, Pensacola enjoys the privilege of regular practice sessions. We planned our recent trip to Pensacola around the practice schedule, and we were glad we did!

Practice starts at approximately 10:30 am, and when the Blue Angels take off, you’ll see an amazing show full of speed, skill, and precision. The loud engines, tight turns, and impressive flying formations will leave you in awe.

The excitement of seeing the Blue Angels up close is thrilling for kids and adults alike. My husband even said it was one of the most amazing experiences he’s ever had! If you have little ones, though, be mindful that the loud noises can be overwhelming, so packing hearing protection is a smart idea. These are our favorite noise canceling headphones that we brought along for the Blue Angels practice show. We’ve also used the same one for fireworks at Disney and on the 4th of July. The practice session lasts about 55 minutes, the right length to keep even younger children entertained without losing interest.

Backpacks, daypacks, luggage, and similar items are NOT permitted on the flightline during Blue Angels practice air shows. However, small purses, bags with medications, and diaper bags are allowed but will be subject to inspection by Naval Air Station Pensacola Security personnel. The entire practice is outdoors, so plan accordingly with water, sunscreen, and hats. Here is a list of the items we recommend to make your experience more enjoyable.

On selected dates, there is an autograph session after the show with the Blue Angels Team.

Meet the Blue Angels: Autograph Sessions

On some practice days, you have the opportunity to meet the Blue Angels. The team holds autograph sessions where visitors can meet the pilots, take photos, and have memorabilia signed. Plan Your Visit

To ensure your day seeing the Blue Angels at NAS Pensacola is as smooth as possible, you’ll want to do some planning ahead. Practice days can get busy, especially during peak travel times, and you don’t want to be stuck waiting in line or looking for seating.

Where is the National Naval Aviation Museum?

The Blue Angels practice at the National Naval Aviation Museum, located at Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola in Pensacola, Florida. The address is 1750 Radford Blvd, Pensacola, FL 32508. The museum is situated on the Gulf Coast and is accessible via the West Gate of NAS Pensacola on Blue Angel Parkway.

What time should I arrive at NAS Pensacola for the Blue Angels practice?

The gates at NAS Pensacola open at 9 am, and it’s recommended to get early there by 8:45 am. This gives you time to beat the rush and find a good spot to watch the practice show. Remember, you’ll need to enter through the west gate of the base and go through a security control point. All car passengers 18 and older must present their ID at the gate (U.S. citizens only. See the “National Naval Aviation Museum Tickets” section below for non-U.S. citizen procedures), and you will be denied entry without it. The line here can get quite long, so plan extra time.

What seating options are available for the Blue Angels practices?

For visitors attending the Blue Angels practice at NAS Pensacola, there are several seating options available. A limited number of chairs are available for onsite rental for $6 each, and there is also limited bleacher seating offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Some people brought umbrellas for sun protection but were asked to put them down before the show started so others could see. There is covered seating available on a first-come, first-served basis, but it is a bit further back from the flightline. Keep in mind that some families arrived as early as 9 am to secure their desired seats.

To ensure comfort and avoid the crowds, it’s highly recommended that visitors bring their own chairs. You are allowed to set up chairs both at the flight line and in the museum parking lot, but be mindful of not blocking any vehicular thoroughfares. By bringing your own seating, you can enjoy the show without worrying about seating availability.

What should I bring?

Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, a hat, and hearing protection for young kids, as the noise from the jets can be loud. Here is a list of the items we recommend to make your experience more enjoyable.

National Naval Aviation Museum Tickets

There is no charge for admission to the National Naval Aviation Museum. Additionally, Blue Angels practices and autograph sessions are completely free and open to the public. However, be sure to check the admission and security requirements for accessing NAS Pensacola before your visit.

For U.S. citizens visiting the National Naval Aviation Museum, access to NAS Pensacola is straightforward. Visitors 18 years or older must present a government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license or passport.

For non-U.S. citizens planning to visit the National Naval Aviation Museum, access to NAS Pensacola is possible but comes with specific requirements. Foreign nationals must be accompanied by a U.S. citizen who is driving the vehicle with them. The U.S. citizen escort must undergo a background check upon arrival at the Navy Blvd./Front Gate Visitor Center.

Additionally, non-U.S. citizens must present one of the following valid documents: a permanent resident card, alien registration receipt card (Form 1-551), a foreign passport with a temporary 1-551 stamp, or a temporary 1-551 notification on a Machine-Readable Immigrant Visa (MRIV). Without both a U.S. citizen escort and one of these approved documents, foreign nationals will not be allowed access to the base or the museum. No exceptions are made to this policy.

Exploring the National Naval Aviation Museum

After the show, you’ll want to spend some time exploring the National Naval Aviation Museum, which is one of the largest aviation museums in the world.

The museum has over 4,000 artifacts on display and more than 150 restored aircrafts from biplanes to modern jets, there’s plenty to see for everyone. The exhibit is interactive and kids can touch and even get into planes.

Here are just a few highlights:

• F-14 Tomcat: Famously featured in the movie Top Gun, the F-14 Tomcat is one of the most iconic aircraft in naval history.

• Blue Angels Aircraft: As home to the U.S. Navy’s flight demonstration squadron, the Blue Angels, the museum proudly displays several of their iconic aircraft. This includes models they’ve flown over the years.

• World War II Aircraft: The museum features a collection of WWII-era aircraft, such as the SBD Dauntless, which played a pivotal role in the Battle of Midway.

• Helicopters: There are several helicopters, like the SH-60 Seahawk, used in anti-submarine warfare and search and rescue missions.

Indoor Exhibits

Beyond the collection of aircraft, the National Naval Aviation Museum offers a range of exhibits which you won’t want to miss:

• Flight Simulators: One of the most popular attractions for both kids and adults is the museum’s flight simulators. To access the simulator you have to buy a ticket. The cost is $40.00 for one or two people. Riders must be at least 50 inches tall with an adult or 52 inches tall without an adult, have a maximum weight of 500lbs, and be 10 years or older. Riders with high blood pressure, recent injuries or surgeries, pregnancy, heart trouble, or those under the influence of alcohol or drugs are not permitted.

• Cockpit Trainers: Located on the mezzanine level of the South Wing, these cockpit trainers allow visitors to climb into the actual cockpits of some of the museum’s most famous aircraft. You can move the control stick, flip switches, and experience the layout of planes like the F-14 Tomcat or a hovering helicopter. Our kids were absolutely thrilled to climb in and experience them firsthand—it was definitely one of the highlights of the visit for them!

• Vietnam War Exhibit: This exhibit takes a deep dive into the role of naval aviation during the Vietnam War. It showcases aircraft from that era, as well as the experiences of naval aviators who served during the conflict. The exhibit includes personal artifacts, letters, and photos.

• USS Enterprise Exhibit: The museum’s USS Enterprise exhibit gives visitors a detailed look at the history of one of the U.S. Navy’s most famous aircraft carriers. You’ll learn about the ship’s critical missions.

Hangar Bay One

In addition to the main museum building, Hangar Bay One is a massive, separate exhibit space that houses even more aircraft and artifacts. The hangar is home to some of the largest aircraft in the museum’s collection, including the P-3 Orion, a maritime patrol aircraft, and the A-1 Skyraider, a close air support aircraft from the Korean and Vietnam Wars. The size and scale of these planes are incredible, and Hangar Bay One offers a chance to see them up close.

National Naval Aviation Museum with Kids: Scavenger Hunt Adventures

If you’re visiting with kids, consider downloading the museum’s Scavenger Hunt before your visit. It’s a printable activity that will keep little ones engaged as they explore the exhibits, encouraging them to spot artifacts and learn about aviation in a fun, interactive way.

There are 4 different missions:

• Mission SEE & FREE (Easy): Spot hidden animals like ducks, tigers, chickens, and even a shark! With picture clues to guide you, check off the boxes as you find each animal and set them free.

• Mission DECODE (Advanced): Step back in time to 1935, surrounded by airplanes and historical events like the Great Depression and Amelia Earhart’s solo flight. Crack the codes, find the keys, and escape the museum by unlocking the mysteries of history.

• Mission VICTORY (Challenging): Trapped aboard the USS Cabot, an aircraft carrier in the midst of World War II, you must unlock the secrets of the past from 1938 to 1944 to help the Allies win the war. Find the keys to escape the museum and claim victory!

• Mission HANGAR BREAK (Top Secret): The details are classified, but this mission is sure to be a thrilling challenge for those up for the task.

Grab Lunch at the Cubi Bar Café

While you’re exploring, head over to the Cubi Bar Café located within the National Naval Aviation Museum.

The menu offers simple options like sandwiches and soups, ideal for a quick family lunch. What makes the Cubi Bar truly unique is its décor, featuring original plaques from the former Cubi Point Officers’ Club in the Philippines, which closed after the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption.

Additional Information for Visiting the Naval Air Museum Pensacola

• Admission: The museum offers free admission, making it a budget-friendly option for families. However, donations are appreciated and help support the museum’s exhibits and upkeep. There are some attractions, like the flight simulator, where you need to buy a ticket.

• Hours: The museum is open daily from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, except on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. The Hangar Bay One annex closes slightly earlier at 3:30 pm.

• Parking: There is plenty of free parking available, but it can fill up quickly on busy days. Arriving early ensures a spot and avoids unnecessary stress.

Durango, Colorado

Durango is one of those places that makes Christmas feel simple special. Families can ride the real-life Polar Express, a train that winds through the snowy mountains while hot chocolate and cookies are served on board. Evenings are easy to spend by a fire or in one of the town’s small lodges. It’s quiet, pretty, and a nice way to slow down during what’s usually a busy time of year.

Stowe, Vermont

Stowe is a New England town that looks like it was made for Christmas. It’s surrounded by mountains, small shops, and winding roads that all look picture-perfect once the snow falls. The town is small but has plenty to do: skiing (we went many times when I was a kid!), sleigh rides, and a few cozy restaurants where families can warm up after a day outside.

A lot of families choose to stay at the Trapp Family Lodge, run by the same family that inspired The Sound of Music. They host caroling, seasonal events, and winter activities right on the property.

Unique Christmas Experiences Across America

Not every Christmas has to look the same. All over the US, there are towns that celebrate the holidays in their own way, from small mountain villages that feel straight out of Europe to places that keep Christmas traditions going all year. Here are a few to add to your list.

Leavenworth, Washington

Leavenworth, Washington is one of those small towns that completely leans into the Christmas season, and does it better than almost anywhere else. Tucked in the Cascade Mountains, this Bavarian-style village looks straight out of Europe, but it’s right here in the Pacific Northwest.

Every December, the entire town lights up for the holidays, with more than half a million lights covering shops, restaurants, and chalets. Families can stroll through the Leavenworth Christmas Town celebration, where there are carolers, live music, and plenty of places to grab hot cocoa and snacks. Kids love the reindeer farm and the chance to meet Santa in the town square, while parents will appreciate the cozy shops and festive atmosphere that feels a world away from city life.

It’s an easy trip to combine with nearby mountain fun, like sledding or a quick ski day, and the whole place is walkable, which makes it especially nice for families with little ones. If you want that “snowy Christmas village”, this is the closest thing you’ll find to a European Christmas village without leaving the US.

Santa Claus, Indiana

You really can’t make a list of Christmas vacations for families without including a town that’s actually named Santa Claus. This small town in southern Indiana celebrates Christmas all year, but December is when it really comes alive.

Families can stop by the Santa Claus Museum & Village to learn how the town got its name and write letters to Santa that actually get answered. There’s also Holiday World, a family-friendly amusement park that turns into a winter playground with themed rides and decorations that keep the holiday fun going all day.

Even the local post office gets in on the tradition: it receives thousands of letters to Santa every year from kids around the world.

In November and December, Santa’s Reindeer Ranch is a fun stop for families who want to see real reindeer up close. Kids can learn a little about how reindeer live, help feed them, and take photos with these gentle animals. It’s an easy, low-key activity that fits perfectly into a day exploring Santa Claus, especially if you’re visiting during the holidays.

Frankenmuth, Michigan

Frankenmuth, known as “Michigan’s Little Bavaria”. Each year, the streets fill with lights, music, and local holiday events that bring families together. Downtown has a Christkindlmarkt with handmade gifts, warm food, and plenty of space to walk around. Horse-drawn carriage rides go through town, and Santa usually makes an appearance.

A visit to Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland, the world’s largest Christmas store, fits naturally into the day. It’s a fun stop to pick out ornaments or small gifts before heading back into town for dinner or a walk by the river. Frankenmuth is small enough to see in a day and enjoy at your own pace—a good fit for families looking for a relaxed Christmas trip.

Warm-Weather Christmas Escapes

If you’re looking for sunshine, palm trees, and maybe a pool day instead of sledding, there are plenty of warm places that make the holidays festive.

Orlando, Florida

Orlando is one of the best warm-weather spots for families at Christmas. The theme parks like Walt Disney World and Legoland get most of the attention, but the whole city joins in. Neighborhoods put on light displays, resorts decorate from top to bottom, and there are holiday concerts and events everywhere you look. Leu Gardens and the Gaylord Palms Resort hosts the Dazzling Nights immersive light displays event, which also features ice sculptures. New York City, New York

Last but definitely not least, the one and only New York City: the MVP of Christmas vacations for families. There’s just nowhere else that captures the holiday season quite like it. Every block feels festive, every corner has lights, and the whole city seems to move to the rhythm of holiday music.

The classic stops are worth it, even if you’ve seen them before. The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is massive and always better in person, and kids love watching the ice skaters below or trying a few laps themselves. A walk down Fifth Avenue to see the department store windows is an easy (and free) way to feel part of the city’s holiday buzz, especially when you end it with hot chocolate from a nearby café.

For families, New York has endless options. You can spend a morning at Bryant Park’s Winter Village, where the kids can skate while you explore the small market stalls or grab lunch at one of the food stands. The American Museum of Natural History and the Children’s Museum of Manhattan are both great indoor options for colder days, and if you want something a little different, the New York Botanical Garden’s Holiday Train Show is always a hit with younger kids.

At night, walk through Times Square to see the lights or visit the holiday displays at Hudson Yards and the new Penn District.

Spending Christmas in New York City is full of excitement. There’s a reason it’s the backdrop in so many Christmas movies. It’s where the season comes to life.

Ever wondered, “What island in Hawaii was Jurassic Park filmed on?” We did, too: The answer is the incredible island of Oahu—specifically, at Kualoa Ranch. This spot was an unforgettable stop on our trip to Oahu, bringing some major throwback magic for me and my husband, as some of our favorite childhood movies and series were filmed here. And for the kids, what little boy doesn’t like riding in a big truck through the jungle in search of adventure and maybe some dinosaurs? We chose the Kualoa Ranch Jungle Tour and really enjoyed it! Let’s dive into our experience.

Introduction

When we planned our trip to Oahu, Hawaii, we knew we wanted to experience an adventure that would be memorable for the whole family. That’s when we discovered Kualoa Ranch, a place that offers natural beauty, adventure, and Hollywood magic. If you’ve ever seen movies like Jurassic Park or series like Jumanji, you might be familiar with the stunning landscapes that make Kualoa Ranch so special. It’s one thing to watch these iconic scenes on the big screen, but it’s another to step into the world where they were filmed.

Why Kualoa Ranch Is Worth the Visit

Once you arrive at Kualoa Ranch, it’s clear why this place is considered one of Oahu’s top attractions. The ranch offers a wide range of activities, from ATV tours and horseback riding to zip-lining and movie site tours. But for us, the real draw was the Jungle Expedition Tour, which promised an off-road adventure deep into the heart of the Ranch’s landscapes.

Before we get into the details of the tour itself, it’s important to note that Kualoa Ranch is not your typical tourist spot. The remoteness of the location means that it’s not as crowded as some of the more popular destinations on Oahu, which adds to its appeal. You’re able to experience the natural beauty of the island without the distractions of large crowds. It’s a place where you can truly connect with the land, the history, and the magic of the movies.

Kualoa Ranch is a place where adventure and history come together in a way that is uniquely Hawaiian. Whether you’re a movie fan, a nature lover, or just someone looking for a memorable experience with your family, Kualoa Ranch has something for everyone.

Our Kualoa Ranch Jungle Tour Experience

We opted for the Jungle Expedition Tour, a 90-minute tour that takes you deep into the Hakipu’u rainforest aboard an open-air jeep. With a minimum age requirement of 3 years old, our littlest adventurer just made the cut. Our journey began with a warm welcome from our guide, who shared fascinating Hawaiian mo’olelo (legends) unique to the area, along with insights into the Ranch’s various stewardship and conservation initiatives. The excitement only grew as we learned that the trails we were about to cross had been featured in iconic films like Jurassic World, Kong: Skull Island, and Jumanji.

The custom-built jungle jeep rumbles along jungle trails, across isolated stream beds, and powers up steep, bumpy hills to see the most spectacular views we’ve ever seen. At various points along the ride, your guide will stop for the group to get out an explore. We were able to get a close look at typical Hawaiian housing structures and wooden deity sculptures.

After that, the jeep took us through sweeping iconic Hawaiian landscapes, with huge green mountains reaching up to the sky. As we drove up the hills, we were educated on many local plants, including fruit-bearing trees. Guests are able to sample the fruit at the times of year that they’re ready to harvest, which is typically in August. Shortly after, we took a short hike to a scenic overlook with views of the valleys.

After the hike, which was at the peak of the land, our jeep rumbled downhill towards the see, and we were able to get a breathtaking view of the Mokoli’i island aka Chinaman’s Hat aka Hershey’s Kiss poking up out of the sea. Shortly after, our tour drove through the movie sets, where we saw the filming locations of Jurassic World, Jumanji, and others, in addition to some props that had been left behind. The tour concluded back at the start, where we could continue to explore the front area of the ranch on foot.

One of the highlights of our visit was the willingness of the guides to take photos throughout the tour. They made sure to capture each group before moving on to the next point, which was very nice, as it can be so challenging to get family photos all together.

What to Expect

1. All-Weather Adventure: The tour runs rain or shine, thanks to the canopy on the jeep. In fact, it poured right before our tour, but Mother Nature was on our side, and the sun came out for the rest of the day.
2. Bumpy Ride: Be prepared for a rugged journey. While our kids found the bumps thrilling, and sometimes even soothing—our youngest dozed off for a bit, the tour isn’t recommended for expectant mothers.
3. Come Prepared: Bring rain jackets for everyone. Even if it’s sunny when you start, the weather can change quickly in the rainforest.

Planning Your Visit

Before you set off on your own Kualoa Ranch adventure, there are a few key things to keep in mind:

How Do You Get to Kualoa Ranch?

Kualoa Ranch is located at 49-560 Kamehameha Highway Kaneohe, Oahu, about 45 minutes from Waikiki. It’s important to note that you’ll need a car to get there, as the ranch is off the beaten path. We found driving ourselves to be the most convenient option, especially with two young children. Construction is ongoing near Kualoa Ranch. To avoid any delays, I recommend allowing extra time for your drive.

If you think that driving is not for you, here is a transfer service from Honolulu to Kualoa Park you might want to check out: Transfer from Waikiki.

You can also get to Kualoa on Honolulu’s City Bus. Although it is the most affordable option, it will take the longest time. From Waikiki Hotels, take any of these buses: #8, #19, #20, #23, #42, #60 or #88A to Kualoa Ranch. Fare is $3 one way for adults, $2 for children.

Arriving and Getting to Your Tour

It’s important to arrive a bit ahead of your scheduled tour time to get situated. This gives you enough time to use the bathroom and locate your pickup spot. The grounds at Kualoa Ranch are quite large, and with many different tour types available, not everyone is picked up right at the front entrance. Arriving early ensures you won’t miss your tour and can start your experience without any stress.

Kualoa Ranch Ticket Office and Booking

We highly recommend booking your tour in advance to ensure you secure your preferred date and time, especially during peak tourist seasons. Ticket prices vary depending on the tour you choose. For example, during our visit, adult tickets for the Jungle Expedition Tour started at $54.95, and children’s tickets (ages 3-12) were priced at $39.95. However, it’s always best to check online for the most current rates.

What to Pack for the Adventure

• Rain jackets for everyone: Even if it’s sunny when you start, the weather can change quickly in the rainforest
• Extra clothes: In case you do get caught in the rain, having a backup set of clothes is essential
• Sunscreen: The strong Hawaiian sun makes sunscreen an absolute must for every outing, even in a covered jeep. This is our favorite. It’s also reef-safe and can be used all over Hawaii.
• Insect repellent: There are lots of mosquitoes around, so don’t forget to put on insect repellent before heading out to keep the bites away. Here is our favorite DEET-free option.
• Comfortable Clothing and Shoes: Make sure to wear light, comfortable clothes, as well as closed-toe shoes or sandals for walking around the ranch.
• Water: While the tour isn’t overly long, it’s always good to have water on hand, especially in Hawaii’s warm climate.

What to Do After the Tour

Once the Jungle Expedition is over, don’t rush off just yet! There’s plenty more to explore at Kualoa Ranch. The grounds are filled with interesting sights, from live and fake horses (statues) to movie memorabilia that will transport you back to the sets of your favorite films. There’s also a gift shop on site where you can pick up clothes, souvenirs, and locally made goods to remember your adventure. We came away with a t-shirt for each of our boys, but we didn’t buy any of the locally-made foods, as they were quite pricey. Either way, it is really fun to visit and see all the stuff they have.

Can you get tickets when you arrive or should you get them in advance online?

Yes, you can buy onsite, but we recommend buying them online ahead of time, as tours have limited availability and may sell out in advance.

How much are the tickets?

The cost of tickets varies depending on the tour you choose. Prices start at $54.95 for some tours, but it’s important to check the specific tour options and current rates on the Kualoa Ranch website. Each tour offers a unique experience, so it’s worth exploring the different options to find the one that best suits your family’s interests and budget.

What are Kualoa Ranch’s hours?

Kualoa Ranch is open Monday through Sunday from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm, with the last tours departing at 3:30 pm. The ranch is closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Aunty Pat’s Café, located in the Visitor Center, operates from 7:30 am to 3:00 pm, with grab-and-go items available until 4:00 pm. The retail and gift shop, also in the Visitor Center, is open from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm. Additionally, the KualoaGrown Market is open Thursday through Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm but is closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Parking at Kualoa Ranch is free and easy. There is a large lot onsite.

Age Requirements

One of the most common questions I received was about age restrictions. For our Jungle Expedition Tour, the minimum age is 3 years old, which meant our youngest was just old enough! All children must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Children of all ages can join the Kualoa Grown Tour, Movie Sites Tour, Ocean Voyage Adventure, and Secret Island Beach Activities.

For the Jurassic Adventure Tour, children also must be 3 years or older. The Multi-Passenger UTV Raptor Tour and Malama Experience require kids to be 5 years or older. For eBike, Horseback, and Zipline Tours, children must be 10 years or older and meet height and weight requirements. Teens 16 years and older can participate in all tours, provided they meet the necessary height and weight criteria.

Is Kualoa Ranch worth it?

Kualoa Ranch is definitely worth it. Visiting was one of the best parts of our trip to Oahu, and we all had a blast. The mix of beautiful scenery, fun adventures, and movie history made it an experience we won’t forget. Whether you love movies, enjoy outdoor activities, or just want to see a special part of Oahu, the Kualoa Ranch Jungle Tour is a great choice.
