You can spend four days doing nothing but beach mornings and pool afternoons, or you can build a fun little loop through the Algarve region that keeps kids entertained without turning the trip into a constant car-seat shuffle.

This 4-day Algarve itinerary is built around short drives, kid-friendly stops, and downtime that actually feels relaxing. I love it as an add on if you are also visiting Lisbon as part of a larger Portugal trip.

Best Time to Visit Algarve with Kids

The best time to visit Algarve depends on what you want your days to look like. If your goal is beach time without the busiest crowds, shoulder season is usually the easiest. If you’re traveling in peak summer, plan for earlier starts and more breaks. Here’s how the seasons typically feel in the Algarve, Portugal:

• May–June (Shoulder season): Warm beach weather without peak crowds.
• July–August (Summer): Classic summer, but busiest (and hottest) time in southern Portugal.
• September (Shoulder season): Still sunny, water is warmer, prices often go down.
• November–March (Autumn, Winter): Quiet and calm. Great for cliff walks, towns, and playground breaks, but not “all-day beach” weather.

Getting from Lisbon to Algarve

If you’re doing Lisbon to Algarve, you have three main options:

• Car: The most flexible choice. You control breaks, snacks, and timing. It’s also really useful once you’re in the Algarve region because so many things to do in Algarve are spread out along the coast and inland, so a car makes getting around much easier.
• Train: A good low-stress option. It works best if you’re staying in one town as opposed to hopping around the region.
• Bus: usually the cheapest. It can be convenient on a direct route, but you’re locked into a schedule and it’s harder to take breaks when you need them.

No matter which option you choose, it helps to arrive early enough to keep the first afternoon light.

Where to Stay in the Algarve Region with Kids

Most families are happiest picking one base sticking there or mixing in some day trips. If you have 4 days, you can easily stay in one town and explore others during the day or not. The Algarve region is easy to road trip in small pieces, and staying put can make your days much more relaxing, which is a huge bonus if you’re coming off of a few days in Lisbon touring the city.

Lagos

Best for cliffs, coves, a walkable old town, and beach hopping. This is a great choice if you want that classic Algarve, Portugal coastline feel with plenty of things to do in Algarve close by. Parking can be tricky in peak season, so we choose the train when we stayed here.

Tivoli Lagos is our top pick for a family hotel, and you can also consider a homestay. We use HomeExchange for this.

If you only have 3 to 4 days, I usually prefer one base. I’d usually pick Lagos (or just outside of it) for the best mix of beaches, scenery, and dinner options. Plus, my family loves that the beach is right next to an old walled city. It’s the best of both worlds: relaxation and a bit of adventure.

Faro

Best for easy airport access and nature days. Faro works well for shorter stays, especially if you want to explore the lagoon area and nearby islands. It is practical, but it has less of the dramatic cliff-and-cove vibe right in town.

Albufeira

Best for resorts and pools. If your kids are happiest with a predictable beach and hotel routine, Albufeira makes planning simple. The tradeoff is that it can feel busy, especially in summer.

Sagres

Best for rugged scenery, surfing, and sunsets. Sagres feels quieter and more open, and it is a fun base if your family likes big views and west coast beaches. It is windier, and some beaches are better for watching waves than for calm swimming with little ones.

Alvor

Best for a relaxed beach town feel. Alvor is a good middle ground if you want somewhere calmer than the big resort areas but still convenient for day trips. It also works well for families who like walkable evenings and a simple beach routine.

Wyndham Residences Alvor Beach is a solid family pick in Alvor because you can book it through Wyndham (a Capital One partner) and transfer your Venture miles to cover the cost. This hotel offers bigger apartment-style rooms, which are great for bigger families.

Vilamoura

Best for a polished resort feel, flat walkable streets, and easy logistics. Vilamoura is a purpose-built resort town, which makes it incredibly stroller-friendly and easy to navigate compared to the hilly, cobbled streets of Lagos. Everything centers around the large Marina, where you’ll find endless dining and shopping options.

This is a great “path of least resistance” choice because it is only 25 minutes from the airport. Algarve Itinerary

Here is how we like to organize our time in Algarve:

• Day 1: Arrive and settle into the hotel
• Day 2: Caves and cliffs on a boat tour
• Day 3: West coast beaches and a sunset viewpoint
• Day 4: Add a little adventure at a waterpark or theme park

Day 1: Arrive in the Algarve, Portugal and Get Settled

Since you’ll likely leave the Lisbon area in the morning, this itinerary assumes you’ll arrive after about 3-4 hours of travel. We like to settle into the hotel first, and then explore nearby. Most of the hotels will have a beach within short walking distance and a pool, so you can choose either option. We usually choose the beach option on foot, so we can see what’s around and scope out an ice cream stop for after dinner!

Later, do an early dinner close to your lodging or even at the hotel. If everyone still has energy, add a short sunset walk. In southern Portugal, sunsets are an easy and memorable way to end the day, and you can typically get a great view from any beach or cliff above.

Best Beaches for Families

Many of the region’s beaches are accessed via long walks down ramps or stairs from the cliffs above, which aren’t very friendly to strollers or little walkers. If you want to keep your beach days easier, choose one of these options that avoid hiking your way down to the sand and surf.

• Praia da Luz (Luz, Lagos): A calm, sandy bay with easy access and a short walk from the parking area. Great for a first beach afternoon because it’s simple and low-effort.
• Meia Praia (Lagos): A wide, open stretch of sand where it’s easy to spread out. The walk in is short and flat from the parking area.
• Praia da Rocha (Portimão): The largest beach of the region. It’s full of activities during the summer.
• Praia de Alvor (Alvor): Long sandy beach that extends for over 3.5km. It has boardwalk access over the dunes and parking nearby. Great with little kids because it’s stroller-friendly.
• Praia da Falésia (Albufeira): A classic long sandy beach with easy access. Praia da Falésia at Açoteias has lifeguards on duty, which makes it a safe beach choice for families with kids.

Day 2: Caves, Cliffs, and One of Classic Algarve Activity

After you’ve gotten your bearings, use this day to take in the iconic coastline moments that make the Algarve region special.

Morning: Take a Short Boat Tour

A short boat tour is one of the easiest ways to see caves and rock formations with kids. It’s one of the most memorable things to do in Algarve, and it usually feels manageable even with younger children. If you have older kids who love adventure and you know everyone handles ocean movement well, a kayak tour can be a great option, too.

A few notes that help this morning go smoothly:

• Bring a light layer, even on warm days. Algarve region is windy and on sea temperatures are lower than in the land.
• Pack water and snacks for right after the tour
• Have a motion sickness plan if anyone in your family needs one

Midday: Beach Time

After the boat tour, head straight to the beach. Pick a beach that’s close to where your tour ends, so you’re not spending a lot of time moving around. Find a casual lunch spot nearby or pack something ahead.

Afternoon: Wander Around a Quaint Town

This is a good afternoon for a short town wander, gelato, and a playground stop. Here are some town centers that work well for an afternoon of exploring as a family:

Lagos: Start in the old town and explore the winding streets, then aim for Praça do Infante D. Henrique, where you can see the small Slave Market Museum (Mercado de Escravos). You can keep this “history stop” brief and age-appropriate since the museum is quite small. If your kids are still going strong, pop into the Igreja de Santo António and the adjacent municipal museum for a quick look before you head back toward the marina.

Faro: Faro is easy for a low-key loop inside the old town walls. Walk in through the Arco da Vila, passing through the historic center, and then finish at the marina for an open, stroller-friendly stretch, where kids can reset while you all grab a snack.

Albufeira: Do a short old town loop, then use the beach boardwalk connection to get down to the sand without turning it into a big walk. If you want an easy evening plan, the marina area is a good pick for a traffic-free promenade and an ice cream stop.

Sagres is more about appreciating the charm. A great family afternoon is a short walk through town, then a stop at the fishing harbor or Praia da Mareta before you head to the fortress and viewpoints.

Alvor is perfect when you want a calm town center with a nature option. Take a short wander near the harbor, then hop onto the Passadiços de Alvor boardwalk through the Ria de Alvor area. It’s flat, kid-friendly, and easy to turn around when little legs get tired.

Day 3: Praia do Camilo in the Morning, Lunch in Lagos

Morning: Praia do Camilo

Start the day at Praia do Camilo before it gets busy. It’s one of the best beaches with a “wow” factor near Lagos because the water is protected by the rock formations. The walk down is on a long wooden staircase, so this is a better beach for a morning visit when everyone has energy. You’re not going to want to make this a full-day stop, since you’ll want to avoid carrying lots of items up and down the stairs.

One of the fun little details here is that the beach is split into two small coves, connected by a short tunnel through the rock. If your kids are into “secret spots,” walking through to the second cove will be a highlight. Plan to arrive early in high season, since this beach does get crowded, and bring your own snacks and water since there are usually no venders here.

Midday: Lunch in Lagos

After the beach, head into Lagos for lunch. Lagos Old Town is great for families because it’s made for wandering. You can stick to a short loop through the pedestrian streets, then let the kids reset with ice cream and a quick stop at a small square or open area.

If you want a lunch spot that feels doable with kids, look for somewhere casual in the center where you can eat without rushing. Fortunately, Portuguese culture really appreciates and adores children, so it’s not usually noticed or minded if little ones get up or are noisy during lunch.

Late afternoon: Sunset at Cabo de São Vicente

Cabo de São Vicente is one of the most memorable sunset spots in southern Portugal. It can be windy, so bring layers. With kids, keep a close hand-hold near viewpoints and stick to the more obvious walking paths.

Day 4: Adventure Day

On your fourth day in the Algarve region, add in a little adventure and true “kid time”. Follow your family’s energy and choose from these options based on how they’re feeling and where you’re headed the next day (home or to explore another area of Portugal!).

Option 1: Waterpark Day

Slide & Splash is one of the easiest “everyone’s happy” days in the Algarve region, especially if you need a break from beaches and stairs. It’s a seasonal waterpark near Lagoa with a mix of bigger slides for older kids and dedicated children’s areas for younger ones, plus practical basics like parking, food on-site, and lockers. It can be a smart choice for the hottest days in southern Portugal, and it also works well if your trip includes different ages and you want one place where everyone can do their own thing for a few hours.

Option 2: Theme Park Day

Zoomarine Algarve is a full-day family theme park in the Algarve region with a mix of animal habitats and presentations, plus rides and water attractions. Option 3: Adventure Park

Parque Aventura is a good pick in the Algarve region if your kids need to burn off energy and need a change or scenery from the beach. It’s compact, colorful, full of viewpoints and snacks, and there’s always something new to look at. The key is building your days around neighborhoods, so you’re not zig-zagging over hills nonstop.

If you’ve been searching what to do in Lisbon, and you want a list that actually fits a family trip, this is it. These are my 20 must do in Lisbon activities, with kid-friendly notes and the little logistics that will make your trip unforgettable.

20 Fun Activities to Do in Lisbon With Kids

1. Start With a Guided Tour in the City Center

When visiting a new city, It’s great idea to start with a guided tour through the center. It helps you understand the significance of what you’re seeing, not just take photos and move on. For kids, it’s even better because the story of the place will stick with them. A guide can connect big moments like the 1755 earthquake and the city’s rebuild, and suddenly plazas and churches feel like part of an ongoing story instead of another building. There are different options to do:

Walking Tour

A walking tour is the simplest, most classic way to start. You’ll cover the core areas like Baixa and Chiado at a steady pace, and it’s easy to pause for pastries or a bathroom breaks. This is a good option when you want a real sense of the city’s layout, because you’re on foot seeing the hills, the streets, and the little details you’d miss from a vehicle.

If you’re traveling with kids who can handle walking but need frequent breaks, this still works well as long as you pick a shorter route and do it earlier in the day. It sets the tone for the rest of your trip, because after the tour you’ll recognize landmarks and neighborhoods instead of feeling like you’re constantly checking your map. Hop on Hop Off Bus

We like to treat these like our transportation for the day and truly utilize the hope on hop off experience. Ride for a few stops, hop off for a viewpoint or a snack, then hop back on when little legs start to fade.

This option is especially useful when you’re trying to connect areas that are farther apart, like getting a feel for the city before you decide which neighborhoods you want to explore more deeply on foot.

Tuk Tuk Tour

If you’re choosing one guided option that feels the most fun for kids, a tuk tuk tour is hard to beat. It’s open-air, it moves quickly enough to keep kids engaged, and it can climb steep streets that are exhausting on foot. It also lets you see a lot in a short amount of time, which is perfect early in your trip when you’re still figuring out what you want to come back to later.

Tuk tuks are great for viewpoints because you can stop, hop out for a quick look and photos, then keep going before anyone gets restless.

2. Wander Praça do Comércio

What to Do Here

Take photos under the arches, look out over the Tagus River, then continue on toward Rua Augusta.

3. Go Up the Arco da Rua Augusta for a “Big Picture” View

If your kids love looking down on cities, this viewpoint is an easy win. The Arco da Rua Augusta sits right at the edge of Praça do Comércio, so you don’t need extra planning to add it. The view helps you visualize Lisbon.

This is a great activity early in your trip. It helps everyone understand how the neighborhoods fit together.

4. Visit Lisbon Story Centre

The Lisbon Story Centre is a great stop with kids because it’s interactive, modern, easy to fit into your day, and it gives everyone real context for the city. It’s right in Praça do Comércio, so you can pop in while you’re already exploring downtown. The visit is designed as a one-hour experience with an audio guide, and it’s not the kind of museum where they’re bored in five minutes.

The highlight for most families is the section about the 1755 earthquake, which the museum presents as an immersive experience. After this, the places you’re walking through, especially Baixa and the big squares, make more sense, and kids tend to remember what they learned because it’s told like a story instead of a lecture.

Lisbon Story Centre prices (as of early 2026): the standard 60-minute ticket is €7.50 per adult (16+), €5.50 for seniors (65+) and students, €3.50 for kids ages 6–15, and free for children 5 and under; there’s also a family ticket (2 adults + 2 children) for €18.50. If you’re using the Lisbon Card, the Lisbon Story Centre is included.

It breaks up walking days and gives you a planned indoor stop if the weather is hot or rainy.

5. Ride a Classic Lisbon Tram

Riding Tram 28 is one of those classic what to do in Lisbon moments because it squeezes through some of the city’s narrowest, steepest streets and passes big-name sights like Alfama, the Santa Luzia viewpoint, the Lisbon Cathedral (Sé), Chiado, and Bairro Alto.

The only catch is that it’s also a real commuter tram for locals, and the crowds can get intense, especially in peak season. If you’re visiting during busy months, ride it very early in the morning or choose a different tram line so you still get the Lisbon tram experience without the packed cars. If your timing doesn’t work out or you had your heart set on Tram 28, just plan to wait in line a bit and to ride without a seat.

6. Explore Alfama

Even if you don’t ride it, it’s worth seeing in person because this little yellow car rolling up the postcard-perfect street is one of the most recognizable Lisbon scenes (and yes, it’s a big favorite on social media).

13. Visit the Oceanário de Lisbon

If you need a spot any kid will love, the Oceanário is one of the easiest choices. It’s the kind of place where kids stay engaged without you having to “sell it” too much, and it’s also a great mid-trip reset when everyone needs a break from hills, viewpoints, and history.

If you can, buy tickets online, so you’re not adding an extra line to your day. Ticket prices are structured by age: ages 0–2 are free, ages 3–12 are 15€, ages 13–64 are 25€, and ages 65+ are 17€.

The Oceanário is open daily from 10 am to 8 pm, with last entry at 7 pm.

14. Eat at Time Out Market

Time Out Market Lisboa is a food hall inside the historic Mercado da Ribeira. It’s a great spot in Lisbon when you want an easy meal with lots of options all in one place. The market brings together a curated mix of restaurants, bars, and food stalls, with Portuguese favorites and international choices, so everyone can get what they want.

It also has real history. The original market opened in 1882 and was a major spot for locals to buy fresh food. Today it’s more modern, but it still feels like a market, just with better variety and a very convenient setup for families visiting Lisbon with kids.

Family Tip

Do one lap first, decide what you want, then split up orders. It’s much easier than standing in each line while kids wait.

15. Castelo de São Jorge

Castelo de São Jorge is classic Lisbon, especially if you want a big payoff view without needing a full-day plan. The castle sits on the hilltop above Alfama, and just getting there feels like part of the experience as you wind up through narrow streets and suddenly reach the top.

Once you’re inside, it’s easy to see the appeal. You can walk along sections of the walls, look out over the city and the Tagus, and let kids explore in a way that presents history without a museum. If you’re doing Lisbon with kids, this is a great spot for imaginations to run wild because it feels like a real fortress.

If you have time, check out the camera obscura in the Black Chamber for a live, 360-degree view of Lisbon, and keep an eye out for the peacocks wandering around. There are also archaeological remains and exhibits that tie the site to Lisbon’s history, including damage from the 1755 earthquake. Lines can get long, so this is one place where buying timed or skip-the-line tickets can make your day run much smoother.

16. Telecabine Lisboa in Parque das Nações

If you want a break from hills but still want big views, add the Telecabine Lisboa to your list of what to do in Lisbon with kids. It’s a cable car ride over the Tagus estuary in Parque das Nações, and it feels like an activity instead of transportation, which is why kids usually love it. You’re up almost 100 feet above the water, and the route runs for about 1,230 meters, with views over the modern waterfront, the Oceanário area, and landmarks like the Vasco da Gama Bridge.

The ride itself is short enough to fit into a busy day. It typically takes between 8 and 16 minutes, so it works well as a quick highlight, especially if you’re already planning an Oceanário day.

Tickets costs are presently (as of early 2026): Adults 7,50€ one way or 9,50€ round trip. Kids ages 3–12 5,50€ one way or 6,50€ round trip. Kids 0–2 are free.

17. Day Trip From Lisbon: Sintra

If you’re building your list of what to do in Lisbon with kids, and you have one extra day, make it a day trip to Sintra. It’s an amazing quick side trip from Lisbon, and it’s easy to understand why families love it. You get palaces, big views, gardens to wander, and that fairytale feeling that keeps kids interested even when they’re tired.

Sintra can be as simple or as packed as you want. If your kids do best with fewer stops, pick one main palace and one “wander” spot, then call it a day. If you’ve got older kids, and everyone is moving well, you can layer in more sites. Either way, plan to start early because Sintra gets busy.

18. Plan a Belém Half Day

Belém is a neighborhood just on the outskirts of Lisbon, where you’ll find some of Lisbon’s most famous landmarks. Since it’s a little farther from the city center, you’ll need to plan a bit of time to get there and be there. You can use my guide to Belém for planning.

19. See Torre de Belém

Torre de Belém is iconic and absolutely worth seeing from the outside. Going inside can be tight and slow, especially with kids, so I treat it as an “outside first” stop and decide on the spot if it’s worth the line.

Best way to do it with kids

Take photos outside, talk about the river and the explorers, then move on if needed.

20. Sample Pastéis de Nata

Trying pastéis is a must do in Lisbon, and the most famous place to do it is in Belém. Pastéis de nata are small flaky pastries filled with creamy custard, usually finished with a sprinkle of sugar and cinnamon. They’re simple, but when they’re fresh and warm, they are the perfect Lisbon treat.

Belém is where this pastry became iconic back in the 1800s, and the original recipe is still closely guarded at the classic Pastéis de Belém bakery. The outside is crisp and buttery, the inside is smooth and not overly sweet.

Expect a line, especially at peak hours. The good news is the place is huge and the line usually moves faster than it looks. If you’re doing Lisbon with kids, I like treating this as a planned stop. Grab a few, find a spot to sit, and let it double as a snack break before you keep exploring Belém.

When to Visit Lisbon with Kids

Lisbon works year-round, but the best time to visit depends on how your family handles crowds, heat, and how much you want to do on foot. Since so much of what to do in Lisbon involves walking, viewpoints, and neighborhoods with hills, comfort matters more here than in flatter cities.

Spring

Late March through May is one of the sweetest spots for Lisbon with kids. The weather is usually mild, days feel bright without being brutally hot, and it’s easier to enjoy long mornings outside. You can do yourLisbon sightseeing without feeling like you need constant indoor breaks. It’s also a great season for a day trip to Sintra, because you can enjoy the gardens and palace grounds without the peak-summer crowds.

Fall

September and October are another great window. It’s still warm enough to feel like summer in the sun, but the city is generally more comfortable for walking than July or August. If your kids love playground time and outdoor exploring, this is a great season because you can stay out longer without melting. It’s also a nice time to add coastal trips if you want beach time as part of your Lisbon plans.

Summer

June through August can be a great family trip, but it requires smarter timing. Lisbon gets busy, and the heat plus hills can turn a simple afternoon into a struggle. If you’re visiting in summer, plan your biggest walks and viewpoints early in the morning, then do an indoor activity midday, like the Oceanário or Lisbon Story Centre. Save things like Time Out Market and viewpoints for later in the day when it cools down a bit.

Winter

November through February is often calmer and can be a surprisingly good time for a city trip with kids. You’ll likely get fewer crowds at major attractions and a more relaxed pace overall. The tradeoff is that you might have rainy days and shorter daylight hours, so it helps to mix in indoor-friendly stops and keep your daily plan flexible. If you’re traveling with kids who do better with less chaos and fewer lines, winter can be a really nice choice.

Final Thoughts

If you’re trying to decide what to do in Lisbon with kids, the biggest thing to remember is that Lisbon is at its best when you slow down and let the day breathe. Pick a neighborhood, choose a few must-do stops that make sense together, then leave room for snack breaks, viewpoints, and the little moments of discovery that happen in between.

Pretty as a picture, Belém is a can’t-miss day trip while visiting Lisbon. A small western suburb of Lisbon, Belém was once an escape for Lisbon’s elite from the poverty of the city, just like Sintra was an escape for royalty (we’re seeing a trend here!). Its historic roots go much deeper than that: due to Belém’s ideal location on the northern banks of the Tagus River, many of the 14th century adventurers and explorers set sail from here, and there’s a monument to prove it.

If you are building your Lisbon itinerary, this guide pulls together the best things to do in Belém. Belém is also one of the easiest day trips because the main sights are close enough to connect on foot once you arrive. And yes, pastéis de Belém absolutely deserves a dedicated stop.

How To Get To Belém From Lisbon

Most people visit as a day trip, and it is straightforward. Tram 15E is the classic option, and it also drops you right where you want to start if Jerónimos Monastery is on your list of things to do in Belém. If you are trying to keep the day easy, aim to arrive earlier than you think you need to. Belém can feel calm one minute and packed the next, especially around the headline sights.

Things To Do In Belém

Jerónimos Monastery

You’ll hear about the Late Gothic Manueline style of architecture while visiting Portugal, and Jerónimos Monastery is one of the most prominent examples (think richly ornate portals, windows, columns, and arcades, giving you so much to see and photograph!). Because of its important position on the river where the voyages of discovery would depart, Jerónimos Monastery used to be inhabited by monks whose sole mission was to give spiritual guidance to sailors. You can still see the maritime theme reflected in coils of rope, sea monsters, coral, and other sea details in the architecture.

If you are picking only one interior stop, this is the one I would center your things to do in Belém plan around. Give yourself time to slow down, look up, and take in the details. This is also a great first stop because it sets the tone for why Belém matters historically, not just as a pretty neighborhood outside Lisbon.

Don’t Miss

If you’re visiting Belém from Lisbon, Tram 15E will drop you off right before Jerónimos Monastery, the perfect location for picking up a pastéis de nata (custard tart) at Pastéis de Belém, which has been creating the treat since 1837 from a recipe found at the Monastery. The line will be massive for both dining in and takeout, but the takeout line will move quickly, and it’s worth the wait.

Logistics

When you approach the Monastery, there will be three lines: one for tickets, which was the front left when I visited (always buy your tickets online in advance to avoid the lines!); one to enter the Church of Santa Maria de Belém at the front right; and one at the back left to enter the Monastery. Let a security guard know you have a ticket, and you should be able to skip right to the back left to enter the Monastery. You can visit the Church of Santa Maria de Belém when you’re finished, or skip it. You get a bird’s eye view of it from areas within the Monastery.

Pastéis De Belém: The Original Bakery

Pastéis de Belém is the original spot, and it’s not just a bakery you pop into, it’s part of why Belém is on so many Lisbon itineraries. They’ve been making these custard tarts since 1837. Even if you are not a big dessert person, this stop is worth doing once.

How To Fit Pastéis De Belém Into Your Day

• Best timing: right after Jerónimos Monastery, before you start the longer waterfront walk
• If the line is long: commit to takeout and keep moving
• If you want a sit-down break: treat it like your mid-morning pause before the rest of your things to do in Belém list

What To Order

Keep it simple. Pastéis de Belém is the headliner, and coffee makes it an easy snack stop that does not slow your day down.

The Waterfront

Take some time to wander from the Monastery to the Tower along the waterfront, past the Discovery Monument and marinas, or better yet, grab a bite to eat at one of the restaurants surrounding Doca do Bom Sucesso and toast the sailors headed out to sea.

This walk is the part of Belém that makes the day feel relaxed. If you are traveling with kids, the waterfront stretch is a helpful reset between interior visits, and it gives everyone space to move.

Where To Pause Along The Way

Padrao Dos Descobrimentos

Padrão Dos Descobrimentos, also called the Monument to the Discoveries, is one of the easiest photo stops on the riverfront and one of the most iconic things to do in Belém because it ties directly into Belém’s Age of Discovery story. The monument was rebuilt in 1960 to mark 500 years since the death of Henry the Navigator, and it’s designed like the prow of a ship with figures from that era lined along the sides.

If you have time, it is worth going inside. There’s a lift and stairs up to the viewpoint, plus interior spaces used for exhibits, and the terrace view is a great way to see the Tagus and the rest of Belém laid out in front of you.

Before you move on, look down at the square in front of it. The pavement features a large compass rose and world map that helps connect the monument to the routes and places Portuguese explorers reached.

Doca Do Bom Sucesso

Doca do Bom Sucesso is the small marina area in Belém that sits near the riverfront sights, close to the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, and it’s an easy spot to weave into your list of things to do in Belém when you want a slower, scenic break between monuments. It was formerly connected to the Portuguese Navy and today it’s used mainly for pleasure craft, with berths for boats up to about 15 meters, so you’ll usually see rows of sailboats and leisure boats bobbing in place while you walk along the water.

If you want a simple lunch plan in Belém, this area works well because it naturally pairs a waterfront stroll with nearby places to grab a bite and sit for a minute before you keep going toward Belém Tower.

Belém Tower

Belém Tower is another architectural jewel from the reign of Manuel I. Sitting on the Tagus River (it presumably used to be on land), it has served as both an artillery/first line of defense for anyone sailing to Lisbon from the ocean and a dungeon for anyone who had crossed the crown. Now, it’s another place to get those fantastic vistas offered all over Lisbon.

Belém Tower is one of those things to do in Belém that works even if you are short on time. You can enjoy the area around it, take photos from different angles, and still feel like you “did” the sight even if you do not spend forever inside.

Don’t Miss

Make sure to wait in line to climb up to the Tower’s terrace. The views are outstanding!

If the terrace is on your must-do list, it is smart to place Belém Tower after you have already done pastéis de Belém and your waterfront walk. That way, if the line is longer than expected, you are not losing the rest of your day.

Logistics

There are two separate lines for ticket holders and ticket buyers, so buying tickets in advance is really important here. There’s a limited number of people allowed into the Tower at a time, so you’ll be able to get in much faster with tickets already in hand.

Tivoli Gardens was at the very top of our list when we started planning Copenhagen with kids. It is right in the middle of the city, it feels like a classic amusement park and a botanical garden at the same time, and it works just as well for a quick afternoon as it does for a full day. We spent most of the day bouncing between kid-friendly rides, snack stops, and quiet corners where the boys (ages 6 and 4 at the time) could run around or just watch the lights.

In this guide, I’ll walk through what Tivoli Gardens is, how Tivoli Gardens tickets work, our favorite rides, family-friendly food options and practical tips for visiting with kids. If you are trip-planning, make sure to check my Copenhagen itinerary guide.

What is Tivoli Gardens?

Tivoli Gardens is an amusement park and garden right in the center of Copenhagen. It opened in 1843, which makes it one of the oldest amusement parks in the world, and it still feels very different from a modern theme park. You get classic rides, concerts, lakes, a giant food hall, and flower beds all in one space.

The park has more than 30 rides ranging from gentle carousels to big coasters. There are also playgrounds, theaters, live music, fireworks during some seasons, and lots of places to just sit with a snack and people-watch.

One fun detail to share with kids is that Tivoli Gardens helped inspire Walt Disney when he was dreaming up Disneyland after a visit to Copenhagen.

Where Is Tivoli Gardens and How to Get There

Tivoli Gardens could not be easier to reach. The entrance is right across the street from Copenhagen Central Station, which means you can get there by:

• Train from the airport or suburbs
• S-train or regional train from other parts of Denmark
• Bus or metro with a short walk
• On foot from many central neighborhoods

Because parking in the center of Copenhagen is expensive and limited, I recommend using public transport or walking rather than driving if you can.

If you are using a Copenhagen Card, it usually includes public transport around the city plus free entrance to Tivoli Gardens.

Tivoli Gardens Tickets and Passes

Before you go, it helps to understand how Tivoli Gardens tickets work so you do not spend half your day at a ticket window.

Entrance vs Rides

Tivoli splits costs into two main parts:

• Entrance ticket: lets you go into the gardens, see the lights and entertainment, and use the restaurants.
• Ride options: you can either buy individual ride tickets or get an unlimited Ride Pass wristband (sometimes sold in a package with entrance included).

Important details to know:

• Children under 3 enter Tivoli Gardens for free with a paying adult.
• Children ages 3–7 need their own entrance ticket at a reduced price.
• Children under 1 do not need a Ride Pass to go on rides, but they must be accompanied by a paying guest over 14.

If you know you want to ride a lot, the Entrance + Ride Pass package usually works out cheaper than buying everything separately. Prices change by date and season, and Tivoli uses a visitor calendar so lower-demand days are cheaper.

When you look at Tivoli Gardens tickets online, pay attention to the type of pass you’re choosing. You’ll usually see options for:

• Entrance only
• Entrance + unlimited Ride Pass
• Extras like aquarium access or ride photos

If you are using the Copenhagen Card, your card covers the entrance ticket to Tivoli Gardens. You still need to purchase Tivoli Gardens tickets for rides separately (either a Ride Pass or individual ride tickets).

Where to Buy Tivoli Gardens Tickets

You can buy Tivoli Gardens tickets:

• Online on the official Tivoli website or app, where you can also see the visitor calendar and prices for specific days
• On site at the ticket booths outside the main entrance

Buying online is usually faster with kids, and sometimes cheaper on quieter days.

When is Tivoli Gardens open?

Tivoli Gardens is not open every single day of the year. Instead, it has several main seasons:

• Summer: Main season from spring through late September
• Halloween: Runs through much of October with pumpkins and spooky decorations
• Christmas: Mid-November through early January, usually closed on December 24 itself
• Some years also have a shorter Easter or winter season around March or February

Opening hours change by season, but a typical summer day is roughly 11 am to 10 pm, with Fridays and Saturdays extended to midnight.

Before you go, double-check the official Tivoli calendar for the exact dates and hours for your visit.

Visiting Tivoli Gardens with Kids

From the moment we walked through the gate, Tivoli felt very manageable with kids. The park is compact, and you move from rides to gardens to food in just a few minutes of walking.

Some family-friendly things we loved:

• Rasmus Klump’s World: A big ship-themed playground where kids can climb, slide, and explore. It is a good place to let them run between rides, and you can meet Rasmus Klump (basically Tivoli’s Mickey Mouse, but a bear) nearby
• Gardens and lakes: When everyone needed a reset, we simply walked around the lakes and watched the ducks or sat by the fountains.
• Evening lights: Staying until it got dark was a highlight. Tivoli is covered in fairy lights and glowing lanterns at night, and the rides look completely different.

If your kids are used to US-style theme parks, Tivoli can feel calmer and more mixed. Many locals simply come in the evening for dinner and a walk, so it has a nice mix of families, couples, and groups of friends.

Best Tivoli Gardens Rides for Kids by Height and Thrill Level

Tivoli has more than 30 rides, and not all of them are geared to kids. Since we visited when our boys were ages 6 and 4, we focused on the family rides. Height requirements can change, so always check the sign at each ride. Here is how we approached it.

Big Coasters and High-Energy Rides

These rides are best for kids who like a lot of speed and are tall enough for the bigger height brackets.

• Milky Way Express: A compact coaster where you race through space. Officially, kids need to be at least 130 cm to ride alone; children between 100 cm and 130 cm can ride with an adult. My older son was able to go on this ride and really enjoyed it.
• Aquila: A spinning, swinging ride that feels like flying in circles through the night sky. The minimum height is around 120 cm, so this one is often a “big kid plus adult” pick.
• Bumper cars: Always a hit. Both kids liked helping steer and bump into their parents.
• Galley Ships: A classic swinging ship ride that both boys enjoyed.

Family Coasters and Classic Views

These are still exciting but work well for slightly shorter kids who are ready for more than a carousel.

• The Mine: A dark ride with gentle thrills and lots to look at. Our boys loved spotting little details in the scenes.
• Ferris Wheel: Tivoli’s vintage Ferris wheel gives wonderful views of the park and the Copenhagen skyline.
• The Roller Coaster (Rutschebanen): One of the oldest wooden coasters still operating. It is not the flashiest ride in the park, but it has a nice mix of speed and history.
• Fun House: A walk-through with moving floors, mirrors, and gentle challenges. Great for kids who like to explore at their own pace. It’s a little challenging to watch your kids inside because it’s dark, so make sure to have a plan in case you get separated.

Story Rides and Gentle Circuits

These are good mid-day options when everyone needs a break from intense thrills.

• Flying Trunk: A story ride based on Hans Christian Andersen tales, where you ride in little “suitcases” past scenes from the stories. The pace is slow and the ride lasts a few minutes. We enjoyed this so much that we rode three times!
• Vintage Cars: Kids can “drive” cars around a landscaped track while adults sit next to them. It feels like a gentle city drive through mini-bridges and greenery. My youngest loved it!
• Music Carousel: A classic carousel with music and animals.

Boats and Animal Rides

These rides are ideal for younger or more cautious kids, especially when one sibling is still under many height requirements.

• The Panda: A gentle circular ride where kids ride in panda-shaped seats. It has a lower minimum height (90cm) and feels calm.
• Camel Train: Another slow ride where kids sit in camel-shaped cars and circle the track. This was a big hit with my youngest who loves camels.
• Dragon Boats: Pedal boats shaped like dragons that you steer around the lake. Adults can pedal while kids “help.”
• Tivoli Aquarium: Technically not a ride, but our boys enjoyed the tanks and watching the fish. It is a good rainy-day or “we need some quiet” stop.

Always check each ride’s height board at the entrance, especially if you are planning your day around specific attractions. For our family, it helped to scan the map first and mark the rides we knew both kids could enjoy.

Food at Tivoli Gardens with Kids

One of the biggest perks of Tivoli is that you can actually eat well inside the park. There are more than 40 food and drink options ranging from quick snacks to sit-down restaurants.

Here are the spots we recommend for a day with kids.

Easy Lunch Ideas

• Hallernes Smørrebrød (Tivoli Food Hall): Open-faced sandwiches with generous toppings based on Danish smørrebrød traditions. You order at the counter and find a seat in the food hall, which works well when everyone wants something slightly different.
• Tivoli Food Hall: Besides Hallernes, there are pizza stalls, Asian street food, and more, so you can mix and match without leaving the park.
• Anarkist Bar: A craft beer bar connected to Tivoli that serves Nordic-style pizzas and a long list of beers on tap and in bottles. There is both an entrance from outside and a connection to Tivoli itself, so it works whether or not you are spending all day in the park. Our boys loed the pizzas here.

Sweet treats and coffee breaks

• Cakenhagen: A patisserie that feels like a fancy cake shop, with layered cakes, pastries, and hot drinks. It is known for a classic Danish pastry selection with a French twist and is very popular for coffee breaks inside Tivoli.
• Espresso House: A familiar coffee chain where parents can grab a latte while kids share a muffin or cookie.
• Rasmus Klump’s Pancakes: Near the playground, this small spot focuses on pancakes themed after the beloved Danish character Rasmus Klump.
• Vaffelbageriet and other waffle stands: Perfect for late-night waffles with ice cream when the lights come on.

For parents: Japanese Pagoda

• Japanese Pagoda area: Around the pagoda and lakeside, seasonal pop-ups appear, especially in summer and at Christmas. It is a pretty place to sit in the evening while the kids ride nearby.

Seasonal Magic: Summer, Halloween, and Christmas at Tivoli

• Summer: Long opening hours, outdoor concerts, fireworks on some nights, and the gardens in full bloom. This is a good time to plan a late evening visit for lights and cooler temperatures.
• Halloween: The park fills with pumpkins, spooky decorations, and themed attractions, and many rides stay open into the evening. It is festive but still family friendly, with lots of kid-level Halloween touches.
• Christmas: Tivoli is often described as one of Europe’s most magical Christmas experiences, with markets, thousands of lights, an ice rink, and seasonal shows. It has even been included on lists of top Christmas markets in the world.

Practical Tips and Safety Basics for Families

A little planning goes a long way when you are visiting Tivoli Gardens with little kids. Here are some of the things that helped us and that line up with Tivoli’s own family information.

Before You Go

• Check the calendar: Confirm that Tivoli is open during your dates and which season you are visiting.
• Decide on tickets: Look at Tivoli Gardens tickets online and compare entrance only vs packages with Ride Passes, especially if you plan to ride a lot.
• Dress in layers: Even in summer, evenings in Copenhagen can be cool. Bring a light jacket or sweatshirt for everyone.

At the Park

• Use a stroller or wagon: Even though the park is compact, little legs get tired. You can rent strollers and pull wagons at the Service Center for a fee plus a refundable deposit, or bring our favorite stroller for Europe along.
• Use a wristband for contact info: Simple wristbands where you can write your phone number, so staff can contact you quickly if a child gets lost.
• Plan quiet breaks: Mark playgrounds, gardens, or the aquarium on your map as “reset spots” where you can step away from crowds or weather.
• Watch height boards: Height requirements are strict and can vary by ride. Check the board and be ready with a backup plan if one child cannot ride.

Final Thoughts

Tivoli Gardens is one of those rare places that works just as well for history-loving adults as it does for ride-obsessed kids. Our entire family loved our visit and would absolutely go back!

Magical is the word that comes to mind when you visit Sintra. Just 40 minutes by train from Lisbon, this dreamy hillside town is packed with palaces, medieval castles and forests. For centuries, Sintra has been the retreat of Portuguese royalty, writers, and dreamers who came here to escape the crowded city of Lisbon. Today, it’s one of the most popular day trips from Lisbon, and for good reason.

Family-Friendly Highlights in Sintra

For parents, Sintra works well because it’s compact enough to explore in one day. Instead of dragging kids through long museum halls, you’ll be outside climbing castle walls, wandering through tunnels, and exploring gardens, and parents can enjoy the history at the same time. Here are the places that usually work best when you visit Sintra with children.

Pena National Palace

Pena Palace is the crown jewel of Sintra. Painted in bold shades of yellow, red, and purple, it’s perched high on a hill with views stretching all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. The palace is a masterpiece of 19th-century Romanticism, blending Gothic, Manueline, Islamic, and Renaissance architecture into one colorful spectacle.

Kids are instantly drawn to Pena Palace because it’s a rainbow-colored castle. The terraces give them plenty of space to look around. Skip the interior tour if your kids are too young; it can be slow-paced and crowded. Instead, focus on exploring the palace exterior and wandering through the park.

Kid-Friendly Tips:

• Buy your tickets online in advance to skip the long lines.
• Pack a picnic and enjoy it in the surrounding gardens, where kids can run off some energy.
• You can either walk uphill from the gate (about 15 minutes) or take the shuttle bus for a small fee. I suggest riding the bus up and walking back down through the park.

Castle of the Moors

If Pena Palace is Sintra’s colorful crown, then the Castle of the Moors is its rugged backbone. Built in the 8th and 9th centuries by the North African Moors, this fortress was strategically built high above Sintra to protect the region. Today, the stone walls snake along the hilltop like something out of Game of Thrones, offering some of the best views in Portugal.

Take the time to walk up all of the stairs to explore every inch of the castle walls. The views are out of this world! Just watch your step, as these stone paths are 1,200 years old. On one side, you can look across to Pena National Palace, and on the other, you’ll see endless forested hills rolling toward the Atlantic. The castle itself is in ruins, but that’s part of its charm.

If your children love climbing, the Castle of the Moors is a dream come true. They can walk along the fortress walls, climb towers, and pretend they’re knights or princesses defending the castle.

The Castle of the Moors is on the 434 bus loop and is often less crowded than Pena Palace, so I recommend visiting it first. Start your day here, then continue on to Pena Palace before looping back into town. Bring comfortable shoes, the stairs are steep and uneven, but the views are worth every step.

Kid-Friendly Tips:

• Buy your tickets beforehand.
• Keep a close eye on little ones. The walls are safe but high, and the stairs are uneven.
• Make it a game—challenge your kids to count how many towers they climb or see who can spot Pena Palace first.

Quinta da Regaleira

Quinta da Regaleira was built in the early 1900s by an eccentric millionaire, and the estate is filled with secret tunnels, gothic towers, hidden gardens, and the famous Initiation Well: a spiraling stone staircase that descends into the earth.

Take the tunnel at the Lake of the Waterfall to the bottom of the Initiation Well (make sure to use your smartphone’s flashlight and watch your step, it’s dark and damp!). Look up at the Initiation Well to see the winding, snail shell-like climb up to the top. Once you get to the top gaze back down and imagine what kind of mind could have come up with such an Alice in Wonderland-esque structure. Kids will love discovering hidden passageways.

Make sure to get a map when you enter since the grounds are large and the sites are mostly spaced out. Don’t neglect to visit the rooms of the main house (Regaleira Palace) to see how its creator lived.

Quinta da Regaleira is not on the 434 bus route. From the town center, it’s about a 15–20 minute walk. This makes it a good stop in the afternoon, after you’ve had lunch in town.

Kid-Friendly Tips:

• Buy your tickets beforehand.
• Bring a small flashlight or use your phone light for the tunnels.
• Ask your kids to choose some places to see on the map and then go and explore them.

Sintra Town

After a busy morning of sightseeing, take a break in town. Kids will appreciate the chance to sit down, enjoy a pastry, and recharge.

If you’re looking for a great spot to have lunch, try Sintra Terrace Tapas Bar, which offers a lovely view over town. For a sweet treat, stop by Piriquita, a famous bakery serving Sintra’s specialty pastries: travesseiros (pillow-shaped puff pastries filled with almond cream) and queijadas (sweet cheese tarts). It’s a good reward for all that walking.

Other Places to Visit in Sintra

Most visitors hit the “big three” Pena Palace, Castle of the Moors, and Quinta da Regaleira, but if you have extra time, consider adding these:

Palácio Nacional de Sintra

Located right in town with its iconic twin chimneys, this palace is older than Pena and filled with beautifully tiled rooms. It’s smaller and easier to explore, making it a good option if you’re traveling with kids.

Monserrate Palace

A bit further from town, this palace blends Gothic, Indian, and Moorish influences. Its gardens are among the most beautiful in Portugal, with exotic plants from around the world.

Convent of the Capuchos

A humble, atmospheric monastery tucked into the forest, this spot offers a stark contrast to Sintra’s grand palaces.

Getting from Lisbon to Sintra

One of the best parts of planning to visit Sintra is how simple it is to get there from Lisbon. The train is by far the easiest, cheapest, and fastest option, and you have two main departure points:

• Rossio–Sintra Line: Best if you’re staying in central Lisbon (Baixa, Chiado, Alfama, or Avenida da Liberdade). Rossio Station is right in the city center and also connects to the metro (green line). The ride to Sintra takes about 40 minutes.
• Oriente–Sintra Line: Convenient if you’re staying closer to the airport or the upper districts of Lisbon. This line departs from Oriente Station and also stops at Roma-Areeiro (green line), Entrecampos (yellow line), and Sete Rios (blue line, Jardim Zoológico stop) before continuing to Sintra. The trip takes about 47 minutes.

Both lines end in Sintra, so you can’t get lost just board the train with “Sintra” as its final destination.

Sintra Train Tickets

Tickets are inexpensive and straightforward once you know the system:

• A single ticket costs €2.30. The first time you ride, you’ll also need a reusable magnetic card called “Viva Viagem” (€0.50).
• If you already have a Viva Viagem card from the metro or tram, you can use it for the train only if the balance is zero. Otherwise, you’ll need a new card. Each traveler needs their own card.
• If you have the Lisbon Card, train travel from Lisbon to Sintra is included for free, along with many attractions in Lisbon and discounts at some in Sintra. This is often the best deal if you plan to see multiple sights in a day.
• There’s also a 24-hour unlimited train ticket for €6.00, but unless you’re doing multiple journeys (like stopping in Queluz on the way), the Lisbon Card is usually better value.

Don’t forget: before boarding, validate your ticket at the scanners near the platforms. You’ll also need it to exit the station in Sintra.

Train Timetable

• From Rossio Station to Sintra: Trains start running at 5:41 am on weekdays (6:01 am on weekends and holidays) and continue about every 20 to 30 minutes throughout the day. The last departure from Rossio is at 1:01 am.
• From Oriente/Entrecampos to Sintra: The first departure is around 6:00 am, with trains every 20 minutes during peak hours. The last train departs close to 1:17 am.
• From Sintra back to Lisbon: Trains run from 5:20 am until 12:20 am (Rossio line) or 5:06 am until 12:06 am (Oriente/Entrecampos line).

Since Sintra is both a commuter route and a tourist hotspot, expect trains to be busy during rush hour. Here you can find the complete timetable of trains.

Tips for the Train

• Buy tickets at the teller if you can. The machines are often confusing and slow, especially if you don’t speak Portuguese.
• Don’t throw away your ticket, you’ll need it to exit the station in Sintra.
• Go early to beat the crowds at Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira. The difference between arriving at 9:30 am versus 11:30 am can mean avoiding long lines.
• Watch your belongings. As with any busy commuter line, pickpocketing can happen, especially around Rossio Station.

How to move around Sintra

Once you arrive, you’ll need to figure out how to get around. While everything looks close on the map, don’t underestimate Sintra’s hills. Walking the entire route is exhausting, and you’ll want to save your energy for exploring the actual sites.

The easiest way to reach Pena Palace and the Castle of the Moors is by taking the 434 bus, which departs right outside the Sintra train station. This circular route stops at the National Palace in town, the Moorish Castle, and finally Pena Palace at the top of the mountain. On the way back, the bus goes directly down to Sintra Vila and terminates at the station, so if you want to see both the Moorish Castle and Pena Palace, get off at the castle stop first and then walk about ten minutes uphill to the palace.

Buses run frequently, about every 15 minutes from 8:50 am until 7:50 pm in summer (shorter hours in other seasons), and the ride takes less than 20 minutes from the station to Pena Palace.

Tickets for the 434 bus cost €7.60 for a round trip, which is the best option unless you’re prepared for a long one-hour walk back down the mountain. A single ticket is €4.10, and there’s also a 24-hour hop-on hop-off pass (€15.20) that covers both the 434 and 435 routes. Tickets are purchased directly from the driver, but if you want to combine transportation, you can buy a “Train & Bus” ticket in Lisbon (€16.00) that covers both the Lisbon–Sintra train and local buses.

No matter which ticket you choose, arrive early, queues for the 434 bus can be long, even outside high season, and catching the first departures of the day around 9:00 am will help you get a head start on the crowds.

Here are other options you can use to explore the city:

• Bike taxis: A thrilling (and slightly terrifying) ride down Sintra’s steep roads. Fun for the experience, but definitely pricier. Expect to pay around €15 compared to €5 for the bus.
• Private cars: Convenient if you’re traveling in a group or with kids, though parking can be a headache near the palaces.
• E-bikes

My recommendation is to use the 434 bus to cover the uphill sites, then mix in some walking to explore on your way back down.

Best Time to Visit Sintra

Sintra is beautiful year-round, if you can choose here are each season highlight:

• Spring (March–May): The gardens are in full bloom, temperatures are mild, and crowds haven’t peaked yet.
• Summer (June–August): The busiest time of year. Go early, buy tickets in advance, and expect lines. On the plus side, the long days give you extra time to explore.
• Fall (September–November): Cooler weather and fewer tourists. The autumn colors in the hills make this a lovely time to visit Sintra.
• Winter (December–February): Quiet and atmospheric, though mornings can be misty and chilly. If you don’t mind wearing layers, it’s a peaceful time to experience Sintra.

Food & Drink in Sintra

One thing I learned quickly: once you leave Sintra’s central town, there aren’t many places where you can get food and water. Most of the palaces and estates don’t have extensive dining options, and you don’t want to waste precious time trekking back for lunch. Bring a water bottle (These are the ones my husband and I prefer, and these are the ones we got for the kids.) and snacks with you, and plan to return to town when you’re ready for a full meal.

How to Organize a One-Day Itinerary for Sintra?

Visiting Sintra in a single day takes planning, but with the right route you can see the highlights without feeling rushed. Here’s an itinerary that balances sightseeing with downtime.

1. Morning: Take the early train from Lisbon to Sintra. Hop on Bus 434 and head straight to the Castle of the Moors.
2. Late Morning: Continue to Pena National Palace.
3. Lunch: Return to Sintra town for food. Try a traditional Portuguese restaurant or grab pastries at Piriquita.
4. Afternoon: Walk from town to Quinta da Regaleira. Wander the gardens, tunnels, and the palace.
5. Optional: If you still have energy, visit Palácio Nacional de Sintra before heading back to Lisbon.

You’ll be tired, but trust me, it’s worth it.

Tips From a Parent to Visit Sintra With Kids

• Start early: Trains from Lisbon to Sintra fill up quickly, and the palaces open around 9:30 am. Arriving early means fewer crowds and cooler weather in summer. Also, kids are usually at their best in the morning, which makes an early start the best way to visit Sintra.
• Buy tickets online: Skip the long lines by pre-purchasing entry for Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira.
• Wear good shoes: Even if you’re using the bus, you’ll still do plenty of uphill walking and stair climbing. This is my hiking boots list, and if it’s too hot you can use hiking sandals. This are the ones we prefer: For women, for men and for kids.
• Pack snacks and water: Food options are limited outside of town.
• Strollers: Honestly, I don’t recommend bringing one unless it’s very lightweight and foldable. Many of the sites have cobblestone paths, hills, and stairs, making strollers impractical. A carrier is often easier for younger children.
• Seats: Grab seats near the door on the train so you can get on and off quickly with kids in tow.
• Plan downtime: Don’t overstuff your itinerary. Even if you only manage two major sights and some time in town, it will still feel magical.
• Skip driving: Parking in Sintra is extremely limited, and the narrow hillside roads get jammed quickly. Stick to the train for a stress-free trip.

Portugal Itinerary Idea

If you’re building a longer Portugal trip, you can easily visit Sintra along with some of the country’s most iconic destinations. Spend a few days exploring Lisbon’s lively neighborhoods, then take a side trip to Belém for its famous monuments and pastries. From there, head south to the Algarve for a beach escape in Lagos, where golden cliffs meet turquoise waters. To finish, plan a road trip through the Douro Valley.

Final Thoughts

Sintra is a day trip that’s worth making. It’s close to Lisbon, easy to reach by train, and gives you a very different view of Portugal. If you only have time for one day trip from Lisbon, make it a plan to visit Sintra.

Copenhagen is one of those cities that feels easy from the moment you land. Smooth transportation, walkable streets, cozy cafés, and parks tucked into every corner make it a wonderful destination for families. Our days here flowed naturally between good food, beautiful neighborhoods, playground stops, and a little culture. This Copenhagen itinerary walks you through our trip, day by day, including the places we visited, where we ate, and how we got around. If you are planning your own family trip, follow this plan or adjust it based on your kids’ ages and energy levels.

Copenhagen Itinerary: Day 1

Arrival and Check In

We landed in Copenhagen at 3:25 pm and headed straight for the Oresundstag train. It is reliable, easy to navigate with kids, and gets you into the city quickly. We rode for three stops and arrived at København H, which is the main station in the city center.

Our hotel for this trip was the Absalon Hotel on Helgolandsgade. It is only a few minutes from the train station and made it simple to settle in without juggling a long transfer. Check in was smooth, and we unpacked just enough to feel settled before heading out to dinner.

If you arrive earlier in the day and have some extra energy, you can join one of the free walking tours that leave from the city center. It is an easy way to learn the history of Copenhagen while getting a feel for the layout of the neighborhoods. The tours move at a comfortable pace and cover many of the main sights, so they are a good introduction before you start exploring on your own.

Dinner at Pincho Nation

We went to dinner at Pincho Nation at 5:45 pm, a playful spot known for its tapas style menu. The atmosphere is colorful and a bit whimsical, with small details around the room that keep kids looking around. You order through their app and pick up your dishes when they are ready, which actually made dinner feel easier. Our kids especially loved the fancy mocktails. It was a relaxed first night and a great spot for families who like variety without a long sit down meal.

Pro tip: there is a little play area in the square just outside the restaurant if your kids are getting antsy while waiting for their food to arrive.

Copenhagen Itinerary: Day 2

Breakfast at Hart Bageri

Our first morning started with pastries at Hart Bageri, which quickly became one of our favorite stops of the trip. Their cardamom buns are light and warm and perfect with a coffee.

If you love bakeries, Copenhagen is full of good ones. Other places on our list included Juno, Lille, and Apotek 57. It is easy to start every day with a quick stop at a bakery before beginning your Copenhagen itinerary.

A Full Day at Tivoli Gardens

Tivoli Gardens was the perfect place to spend a full day with the kids. During this trip, our boys were ages six and four, but most of the rides depended on height rather than age.

Since Tivoli opens at 11 am, we went there after breakfast. Staying all day worked well because the park has a comfortable rhythm. There are thrill rides for older kids, gentler options for younger ones, and plenty of quiet corners when everyone needs a reset.

Our oldest loved the Milky Way Express and Aquila, while our youngest rotated between The Astronomer, The Little Dragon, and the bumper cars. We also spent time on rides they could do together like the Galley Ships and The Ferris Wheel. My oldest was tall enough for the classic wooden roller coaster, while my youngest preferred options like Vintage Cars.

Food was easy all day. For lunch, we got pizzas from Anarkist Bar and some traditional Danish foods from the Biergarten, which are next to each other near the park entrace.. For snacks, Cakenhagen was great for pastries. Make sure to try ‘buns of Lent,’ which is a cardamom-spiced wheat bun filled with almond paste and topped with whipped cream. Other pastry options include Vaffelbageriet and Rasmus Klumps Pancakes, and you can stop by Espresso House if you need a quick coffee. There are seasonal pop ups around the Japanese Pagoda that are fun to check out too. The theme park also houses a huge food hall with tons of ethnic options for any palette.

It ended up being one of the most fun days of the trip! With quick lines, shaded paths, and rides suited to every height, Tivoli was a highlight of our Copenhagen itinerary. Read my full guide to visiting Tivoli Gardens.

Copenhagen Itinerary: Day 3

Hop On Hop Off to Nyhavn

We started the morning at the Central Train Station stop for the Hop On Hop Off bus. It is a simple way to cover longer distances with kids who still get tired during city walks. Our first destination was Nyhavn, the colorful canal lined with boats and historic homes. This is one of the most photographed places in Copenhagen and it is easy to see why.

Farumhus for Treats

We made a quick stop at Farumhus for treats before heading to the boat tour. Farumhus mixes classic Danish baking with modern flavors, so there is always something fresh coming out of the oven. They are known for their breads and cakes, but even the simple morning buns were delicious. It was the perfect little break before a busy day of sightseeing along the canals.

Boat Tour from Nyhavn

Our boat tour with Hey Captain left from Heibergsgade at 11 am. Copenhagen looks magical from the water ,and the tour helped the kids understand how canals connect the city. It also gave everyone a chance to sit and relax while still sightseeing. Our captain was very knowledgable about Copenhagen and let the kids drive the boat for a short time.

After the tour, we boarded the Hop On Hop Off Bus again on Amalienborg Palace (stop 9) and rode for one stop to Gefion Fountain (stop 10). From there we walked to the Little Mermaid statue, the Citadel, and the Swedish Church. This little stretch is scenic and easy to do with kids. The Little Mermaid is a quick stop but worth seeing once, especially if your kids know the story, but be mindful that the statue is super popular with tourists, so this area can get crowded.

Metro to Torvehallerne Market

From Østerport Station, we took the Metro to Nørreport for lunch at Torvehallerne Market. It is lively, full of stalls, and gives everyone a chance to choose something different. We found a mix of sandwiches, fresh produce, and pastries to share. Torvehallerne works well for families because you can eat quickly and keep moving without a long restaurant stop. Make sure you try the traditional smørrebrød from Hallernes Smørrebrød. There are lots of options from typically fish dishes popular in Denmark, to meats to vegetarian options.

Afternoon in King’s Gardens and the Botanical Gardens

After lunch we walked to the King’s Gardens and then continued to the nearby Botanical Gardens. Both are peaceful and open with wide paths, which gives kids space to explore. The King’s Gardens also has a playground where kids can enjoy a break from walking.

From Rosenborg Castle (stop 20), we caught the bus back toward the city.

Dinner at Ristorante Buono

Dinner was at Ristorante Buono at 5:30 pm. The menu was classic Italian dishes, which we all loved. The staff was very kind and accommodating.

Copenhagen Itinerary: Day 4

Breakfast at Bodenhoffs Bakery

We started our Saturday with pastries from Bodenhoffs, a family run bakery known for its traditional Danish breads and pastries. Everything is baked from scratch and you can taste the difference. The bakery has been using the same methods since the 1960s, so the flavors are simple and familiar in the best way. It was an easy and cozy start to the day before we set out to explore Christiania.

Bike Pick Up

We rented bikes for the day at our hotel and rode over to Christiania. The bike rental was conveniently located down the street from our hotel, and our hotel also had some bikes available; however, none for kids. When renting bikes, my biggest recommendation is to test ride them for the right height for the riders and ensure your helmets are not damaged before you head out. Biking in Copenhagen is not for amateurs, and you want to ensure you are capable of following the traffic rules and the speed of the other riders.

Exploring Christiania and the Giants

Christiania is unlike any other neighborhood in Copenhagen, and walking through it gives you a glimpse of a very different side of the city. The area is known for its colorful houses, street art, and a strong sense of community. Some parts have their own rules and photography is limited, so we stayed in the main areas where families walk comfortably. It is a lively place with artists, music, and small cafés, and even a short visit gives you a feel for its creative spirit. Afterward we made our way to find one of the famous wooden giants, which turned into a fun adventure for the kids.

Afternoon at Amager Strand

In the afternoon, we rode out to Amager Strand. It is a long, open stretch of beach where you can walk, play, or simply enjoy the water views. We were fortunate to be visiting during a heat wave, so we got to actually sit on the beach and play in the water. The beach here is quite rocky, so take note for little toes. We made sure to bring a change of clothes and used the public restrooms to get changed for dinner.

Dinner at Christianshavns Faergecafe

Dinner was at Christianshavns Faergecafe at 6 pm, and we got to sit outside on a docked boat. It was so nice to sit and relax on the water after a day of riding. The kids especially loved watching the boats on the canal while we dined. We were able to park the bikes right on the street adjacent to the outdoor dining area.

Copenhagen Itinerary: Day 5

Danish Architecture Center

On our last morning we visited the Danish Architecture Center, a great stop for kids because the building is designed with families in mind. Admission is free for anyone under eighteen, and strollers can go everywhere thanks to the elevators and wide walkways. There are changing tables on the lower level and in the café area, which made the visit easier with younger children.

The exhibits always include hands-on elements and small activities that encourage kids to think about how cities are built and how design shapes daily life. The four story slide is the highlight for most families and quickly became the boys’ favorite part of the morning.

Lunch at Cafe Wilder

After the museum we walked to Cafe Wilder for lunch. The restaurant feels a little like a neighborhood spot in Paris, tucked into a quiet corner with a cozy, lived-in atmosphere. The menu is French bistro style with a Danish touch, so the food is simple and comforting without being heavy.

Dinner at Kødbyens Fiskebar

Our last dinner in Copenhagen was at Kødbyens Fiskebar. The restaurant is known for its fresh Nordic seafood and its casual, industrial setting that still reflects the old Meatpacking District. The menu focuses on sustainable fish prepared in simple but thoughtful ways, but keep in mind that it might be challenging for picky eaters. It felt like a fun place to end the trip, and the neighborhood around it is lively enough for a short stroll before heading back for the night.

What Else to Add to Your Copenhagen Itinerary

Christiansborg Palace

This palace sits on its own little island in the center of Copenhagen and houses the Danish Parliament, Supreme Court, and Royal Reception Rooms. Families can climb the tower for city views or explore the ruins underneath the palace, which help kids understand the layers of history hidden below the city.

Round Tower (Rundetårn)

A seventeenth century astronomical tower known for its wide spiral ramp instead of stairs. Kids usually love the climb, and the view from the top is an easy reward. It is also right in the middle of the shopping district, which makes it simple to add between other activities.

Rosenborg Castle

This small Renaissance castle feels like a storybook setting and is home to the Danish crown jewels. The surrounding King’s Garden is perfect for a picnic or a break with kids, and there is a playground nearby for younger travelers.

Skydebanehaven Playground

A fenced neighborhood playground with equipment for different ages. It is not far from the city center, so it is an easy stop if you are staying in Vesterbro or need a low key activity.

Keep in mind there are playgrounds all over the city, and you can also pop into a few, like this one, which was essentially just trampolines in the sidewalk.

Faelledparken Playground

One of the biggest playgrounds in the city with themed zones, bike paths, and plenty of space. Families often spend a full morning here because there are activities for toddlers and older children.

Final Thoughts

Copenhagen is laid back in the best way from start to finish. The mix of parks, bakeries, canals, and simple transportation made it easy to enjoy as a family. We found something to love every day, from the Tivoli rides to biking through the city, and it’s one of the most kid-friendly cities we’ve seen.

Montreal is such a beautiful cosmopolitan city—a little taste of Europe closer to my home near NYC. I had visited as a teenager, but I have to say that going back as an adult felt like the first time in so many ways. It was so fun to wander the cobblestone streets in Old Montreal, even in the snow, with the trees twinkling from the white lights still adoring them from Christmas. Everything was washed in shining white, and despite the weather, all of the locals cheerfully ventured outside, with their rosy cheeks, barely bundled against the cold—they are hearty Canadians, after all.

Here you’ll find a mix of winter fun, local favorites, and easy ways to explore the city at your own pace. These things to do in Montreal work well for a 3–5 day trip

Winter Sports

Montreal is a wonderland in the winter. There are hills for sledding, frozen lakes for skating, and mountains for skiing. If you can brave the cold, you’re in for some fun.

Don’t Miss: My favorite moments of the trip hands down were the two coldest ones—ice skating in La Fontaine Park in the freshly falling snow and dogsledding right outside the city at Kinadapt Outdoor Training and Education Center. It’s worth it to do the trip where everyone in your party gets to drive the sled instead of being taken out by an instructor. If you have decent balance and can run about 100 meters uphill, you’ll be just fine, but it takes some time to get the hang of it. We were in stitches laughing at ourselves while we figured things out. Don’t worry—the guides are used to tourists driving off of the path.

Logistics: You can rent skates at the facility on the lake, which also has storage lockers. They don’t include locks so bring your own. Be careful on the ice. This isn’t a combed indoor rink, and it’s easy to catch an edge and face plant (I know from experience!).

At Kinadapt, the dogs are all super sweet, and the instructors are so kind, but make sure you follow their instructions, so you don’t accidentally hurt one of the dogs by hooking the harness incorrectly. The guides will follow you closely to make sure you have it right.

Old Montreal

Since so many of the best things to do in Montreal cluster around Old Montreal, it’s worth slowing down and giving yourself a full morning or evening here.

Easy stops to add to your itinerary

• Notre-Dame Basilica (buy timed tickets!)
• St. Paul Street for shopping
• Old Port for winter festivals, ice slides, and warm drinks

Old Port is great for kids, because there’s space for them to move after sightseeing. With adults, it’s a great spot for a long dinner and a nighttime walk.

Mount Royal Park

If you want a mix of views and outdoor time, add Mount Royal Park to your list of things to do in Montreal. The summit offers panoramic views of the city, the trails are easy enough for families, and the lookout points are some of the best places for photos in both winter and fall. It’s an easy stop to pair with breakfast in the Plateau or a slow afternoon walk through the surrounding neighborhoods.

Food Scene

Montreal is a haven for foodies. There are so many trendy restaurants that you can actually get into, unlike in some bigger cities where you have to wait for months and sit in the kitchen. The community’s commitment to fresh ingredients in markets translates to inventive menu options that will be a joy for your tastebuds.

Don’t Miss: Marché Jean Talon, the huge open-air (not in the winter) market in Little Italy has the best selection of local delicacies. We bought some stuffed olives, cheese, and bread to snack on while browsing the market.

For dinner, you have to try:

• Gibbys, a romantic meat and seafood restaurant built in an 18th century stable;
• Boulon Bilk, a minimalist-chic space with modern French cuisine;
• Cadet, which was such a romantic spot to have spent New Years Eve.

For breakfast, you must go to Olive & Gourmando—charming, rustic, amazing. And for poutine, La Banquise is the gold standard.

Logistics: You need a reservation at every one of these places. They were crowded even during off hours. La Banquise doesn’t take reservations, so just go with whichever line is shorter (dine in or carry out).

Spa Day

After all of that outdoor activity, you deserve to #treatyoself. Enter Bota Bota. Bota Bota is an upscale floating spa housed on a historic ferry boat. You can easily spend an afternoon or a full day there between the treatments and other amenities. After your massage or facial, make sure to sign up for the water circuit, which allows you to leisurely use the multiple saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, and cold pools. Plus, it’s walking distance from Old Montreal, making it easily accessible from many of the best hotels.

Family-Friendly Things to Do in Montreal

If you’re bringing kids, there are some easy additions that fit nicely into a winter or non-winter trip and round out your list of things to do in Montreal.

The Biodôme

This is an easy win with little ones because it feels like a series of mini worlds under one roof. You walk through different ecosystems, spot animals up close, and stay warm the whole time, which makes it especially helpful on cold or rainy days.

The Montreal Science Centre

The Montreal Science Centre sits right in the Old Port and is packed with interactive exhibits, hands-on experiments, and rotating special shows. It works well as a morning or afternoon activity when everyone needs a break from walking but you still want to feel like you are doing something special.

Indoor play cafés

Indoor play cafés are great backup plans for truly cold days or when your kids just need to climb and run. You can sip a coffee while they explore play structures, toy corners, and slides, and it gives everyone a reset before heading back out to see more of Montreal.

Parc Jean-Drapeau

Parc Jean-Drapeau is a better option in warmer months, with open green spaces, water features, and room to run around. It is a good place to bring a picnic, let kids play, and get a different view of the city without packing in too much sightseeing.

La Grande Roue

La Grande Roue, the huge observation wheel in the Old Port, gives kids a fun “ride” and adults a great city view at the same time. The enclosed cabins make it comfortable in most weather and it fits easily before or after dinner nearby.

Montreal is one of the easiest cities in Canada to explore with little ones because walkable streets pair with tons of indoor options for colder days.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need to do everything to have a great trip. Pick a mix of things to do in Montreal that match your style: a morning in Old Montreal, an afternoon skating in La Fontaine Park, a trip out for dogsledding, and a long dinner somewhere cozy while the snow falls outside.

Granada was the last city I visited in Spain at the end of my summer abroad trip, and it was the perfect end to my time in Spain. Granada embodies everything that travelers love about Spain all in one city: stunning vistas, intricately built architecture, great wine and tapas, plus although I was there in the middle of a sweltering August, there was always a cool breeze in Granada that evaded us in Sevilla and Córdoba.

If you are planning your own trip and looking for the best things to do in Granada, this guide will walk you through my favorite experiences plus a few more ideas I would add for a return visit.

Quick Planning Guide for Granada, Spain

Planning Guide

• Where to stay: Hotel Carmen
• Flight details: Fly into Málaga Airport (AGP), then take the bus to Granada (2 hours). Granada also has its own airport, so arriving directly is a valid option.
• Time of year visited: Summer
• Time in Granada: 3 days
• Spain itinerary: 8 weeks study abroad in Spain, including Cádiz, Granada, Madrid, and Sevilla

To help you organize your things to do in Granada, here are a few extra planning notes:

• How long to stay:
  • 2 days: Enough for The Alhambra, a tapas night, and a quick walk around the Albaicín.
  • 3 days: Ideal, gives you time for The Alhambra, viewpoints, a cathedral visit, and a slow evening at the Arab baths.
  • 4+ days: Add day trips to the Sierra Nevada or nearby villages.
• Best time of year:
  • Spring and fall usually offer the most comfortable temperatures.
  • Summer is hot, but that famous Granada breeze helps. Plan your big hill walks and outdoor things to do in Granada early in the morning or at sunset.
• Getting around:
  • The historic center is very walkable, but expect hills.
  • Local buses and taxis are helpful when you are tired from exploring all your Granada activities.

Things to Do in Granada

The Alhambra

Dating back to 889 AD, The Alhambra is a fortress, palace, and city all in one, and it’s served as each of those throughout its history. Like so many other historic sites in Spain, both Islam and Christianity influenced the design based on which was in power. Before you even enter the site, its easy to see that The Alhambra is special. Its crimson walls are nestled within lush green surrounding gardens, with the often white-capped mountain peaks as a backdrop. The building itself is washed in light after dark, reflecting a golden beacon in the night that can be seen anywhere in the city.

Don’t miss: Nasrid Palaces, especially the Court of the Myrtles and Generalife, especially Patio of the Irrigation Ditch

Pro Tip: Buy your tickets in advance as soon as you know you are visiting The Alhambra. They actually do sell out during really popular times like summer weekends.

When you are planning things to do in Granada, The Alhambra should be the anchor of your itinerary. A few extra tips:

• Time your visit:
  • Mornings are cooler and a bit calmer.
  • Late afternoon visits can be beautiful as the light gets softer.
• How long to spend:
  • Plan for at least half a day if you want time to walk through the Nasrid Palaces, Generalife gardens, and stop for views over the city.
• With kids or in a group:
  • Bring snacks and water.
  • Break up your visit between the formal palace interiors and open garden spaces so everyone gets a chance to move around.

The Alhambra alone could fill a full day, but it is just the beginning when it comes to essential things to do in Granada.

Mirador de San Nicolás

Part of the charm of Granada is that it’s a hilly city not dissimilar to San Francisco; in certain parts of the city, the only way to get where you’re going is up. But the uphill walks (or drives if you’re so inclined) are absolutely worth it for the spectacular views. Mirador de San Nicolás (Saint Nicholas Lookout) offers amazing views of The Alhambra at night, but what you’ll miss if you take most hotel’s recommendation to go up via cab or the public bus is the glimpse into local life hiding within all of the tiny, winding streets, and the increasingly spectacular views you’ll get on the way up.

Don’t miss: The walk up is as much a part of the experience as being at the top. You’ll be rewarded with a sun-kissed view of the city and a unique view of the glowing Alhambra when you get there.

Logistics: Make sure to walk up about 1.5-2 hours before sunset to avoid the heat and catch the dipping sun while you walk. There are a lot of great restaurants and bars in the immediate area, so plan to stay after dark for food and drinks. Plan your walk to hit Mirador de Santa Isabel la Real on the way up for a break and glimpse of the great view you’ll get at the top.

 This lookout quickly becomes one of the most memorable things to do in Granada because you get:

• A full, postcard-perfect view of The Alhambra and the mountains
• Musicians, street life, and that relaxed evening energy
• A natural way to explore the Albaicín’s narrow, whitewashed streets

Strolling the Albaicín: Whitewashed Streets and Hidden Views

After or before Mirador de San Nicolás, give yourself time to wander the Albaicín, Granada’s old Moorish quarter. Even if it was not in your original list of things to do in Granada, it will probably end up being a trip highlight.

Ideas for exploring:

• Start near Plaza Nueva and walk uphill into the neighborhood.
• Follow small side streets and peek into courtyards and tiny plazas.
• Stop for a drink or snack at a terrace with a view back toward The Alhambra.

This is a great area to slow down, especially in the evening when the heat eases and the city feels more local.

Hotel Carmen

Book your stay at Hotel Carmen. The view from the rooftop pool (image above) is to die for!

Hotel Carmen puts you in a central spot, close to shops and restaurants, while giving you that rooftop pool to cool off after long days of walking. A few reasons it worked well for my stay:

• Easy to get back for a mid-day break when the sun was strongest.
• Walkable to many of the main things to do in Granada.
• Rooftop views give you a chance to enjoy the city even when you are tired.

If you prefer a different style, you can also look for small guesthouses in the Albaicín or modern hotels closer to the river and cathedral area. No matter where you stay, keep your planned things to do in Granada in mind so you are not crossing the city back and forth all day.

Beyond The Alhambra and the viewpoints, here are a few more ideas to round out your Granada itinerary:

Granada Cathedral and Royal Chapel

• Visit the cathedral interior for its high ceilings, artwork, and calm atmosphere.
• Step into the Royal Chapel to see the tombs of Ferdinand and Isabella.
• Combine this visit with a walk through the nearby shopping streets and plazas.

Tapas Hopping Around Town

One of the most delicious things to do in Granada is simple: follow the tapas.

• In many places, you receive a free tapa with your drink.
• Try a few different bars to taste how each spot does it.
• Look for lively places filled with locals, especially on weeknights.

La Riviera

La Riviera is a great place to start your night. Order a drink, and let the free tapas set the tone for the evening. It has that lively, classic Granada atmosphere that makes you feel like you’ve landed in exactly the right place. La Telefonica

La Telefonica is another fun stop to mix into your tapas route. It has a more casual, neighborhood feel, so it’s an easy place to drop in for a drink and tapa before moving on. If you’re planning out your evening things to do in Granada, think of La Telefonica as a flexible stop you can add at the beginning, middle, or end of your crawl depending on where you are in the city.

See a Flamenco Show in Sacromonte

If you love live music and want to add something special to your list of things to do in Granada, spend an evening watching flamenco in the Sacromonte caves. Sacromonte sits on the hillside opposite the Alhambra, and its whitewashed cave homes are one of the most atmospheric places in the city after dark.

Inside the caves, the flamenco shows feel intimate and intense. You sit close to the dancers and musicians, so you hear every stomp, clap, and guitar note. It is very different from a big, staged performance and feels more like being invited into someone’s living room. Adding a Sacromonte show to your things to do in Granada is a great way to experience the city’s Romani and flamenco heritage, not just read about it.

Day Trip Ideas

If you are staying longer or want to add variety to your list of things to do in Granada:

Nearby villages: smaller towns can give you a different pace and feel.

Sierra Nevada: mountain views, hikes, and in winter, skiing.

Christmas in the United States means glowing lights, the smell of cinnamon and pine, and the excitement of children waiting for Santa. For many families, the holidays are also an opportunity to create memories together by traveling, whether that’s on a snowy mountain, a sunny beach, or hitting up a theme park. If you’re ready to make this year’s holiday season extra special, these Christmas vacations for families around the US are full of magic, warmth, and wonder.

Snowy Christmas Adventures for Families

If your family is dreaming of a white Christmas, these towns are some of the best places to find it. Snow, small-town lights, and quiet evenings by the fire make these spots perfect for Christmas vacations for families who want a classic holiday trip.

Durango, Colorado

Durango is one of those places that makes Christmas feel simple special. Families can ride the real-life Polar Express, a train that winds through the snowy mountains while hot chocolate and cookies are served on board. Santa stops by to visit every child, creating a magical experience everyone should witness at least once in their life.

Downtown Durango is easy to explore on foot, with lights across Main Avenue, shops selling local gifts, and plenty of spots to warm up with something sweet or a cup of cocoa. There’s also ice skating and sleigh rides nearby, so you can fill the day without rushing.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Jackson Hole is a great choice for families who love the outdoors. The town square is known for its big antler arches, and in December, they’re wrapped in white lights. The area has great skiing and snowboarding, but you don’t have to be on the slopes to enjoy it. Families can take a sleigh ride through the National Elk Refuge, where hundreds of elk gather in the snow, something you don’t get to see every day.

Evenings are easy to spend by a fire or in one of the town’s small lodges. It’s quiet, pretty, and a nice way to slow down during what’s usually a busy time of year.

Stowe, Vermont

Stowe is a New England town that looks like it was made for Christmas. It’s surrounded by mountains, small shops, and winding roads that all look picture-perfect once the snow falls. The town is small but has plenty to do: skiing (we went many times when I was a kid!), sleigh rides, and a few cozy restaurants where families can warm up after a day outside.

A lot of families choose to stay at the Trapp Family Lodge, run by the same family that inspired The Sound of Music. They host caroling, seasonal events, and winter activities right on the property.

Unique Christmas Experiences Across America

Not every Christmas has to look the same. All over the US, there are towns that celebrate the holidays in their own way, from small mountain villages that feel straight out of Europe to places that keep Christmas traditions going all year. Here are a few to add to your list.

Families can stroll through the Leavenworth Christmas Town celebration, where there are carolers, live music, and plenty of places to grab hot cocoa and snacks. Kids love the reindeer farm and the chance to meet Santa in the town square, while parents will appreciate the cozy shops and festive atmosphere that feels a world away from city life.

In November and December, Santa’s Reindeer Ranch is a fun stop for families who want to see real reindeer up close. A visit to Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland, the world’s largest Christmas store, fits naturally into the day. It’s a fun stop to pick out ornaments or small gifts before heading back into town for dinner or a walk by the river. Frankenmuth is small enough to see in a day and enjoy at your own pace—a good fit for families looking for a relaxed Christmas trip.

If you’re looking for sunshine, palm trees, and maybe a pool day instead of sledding, there are plenty of warm places that make the holidays festive.

Orlando, Florida

Neighborhoods put on light displays, resorts decorate from top to bottom, and there are holiday concerts and events everywhere you look. In this guide, I’m sharing five of the best family-friendly spots across the U.S. to see fall foliage. Each destination offers colorful views and easy activities that kids and adults can enjoy together, from farm visits to simple nature walks to peaceful afternoons soaking in the season.

Stowe, Vermont

Stowe is one of the most popular fall destinations in New England and for good reason. The town sits at the base of Mount Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak, and in the fall the hills come alive with color. For families, it’s an easy place to enjoy the season without needing to plan an intense itinerary.

Apple picking is a favorite fall tradition in Vermont, and several orchards near Stowe make it easy to add this to your trip. Local spots like Burtt’s Apple Orchard in Cabot or Hacketts Orchard in South Hero welcome families for pick-your-own apples, fresh cider, and seasonal treats. Many orchards also offer hayrides, pumpkin patches, and farm stands, giving kids a chance to explore while parents enjoy the fall harvest. Checking the Vermont orchard directory is the best way to see what’s in season and find an orchard close to your route.

Beyond the orchards, Stowe also has a few local highlights that make fall visits even more enjoyable:

With free parking, re-entry stamps, and a casual, family-friendly atmosphere, it’s a great stop to pair with leaf peeping around Stowe.

There are plenty of simple ways to take in the scenery, from a paved walk to Laurel Falls to a drive through Cades Cove where wildlife is easy to spot. Scenic roads with overlooks make it possible to enjoy the views without a long hike, and nearby towns like Gatlinburg and Cherokee add extra kid-friendly activities such as pancake houses, gem mining, and mini golf.

Scenic Drives

• Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail: A one-way loop near Gatlinburg, TN that winds through forest, streams, and historic log cabins. Families can stop at the Noah “Bud” Ogle farm for a short nature trail or take the 2.6-mile round trip hike to Grotto Falls.
• Blue Ridge Parkway: Beginning just outside Cherokee, NC, this route offers some of the park’s best overlooks. Even the first few miles give sweeping mountain views without much walking required.

Hikes

• Laurel Falls: A paved, 2.6-mile round trip to one of the park’s most visited waterfalls, manageable for families with school-age kids. (*Laurel Falls Trail is closed as of Jan. 6, 2025 for 18 months of rehabilitation work)
• Oconaluftee River Trail: A flat, 1.5-mile path along the river near the visitor center, easy for younger children and strollers.
• Look Rock Tower: A one-mile round trip on the Foothills Parkway that climbs to a viewing tower with panoramic views.

Junior Ranger program at Great Smoky Mountains National Park

The Junior Ranger program at Great Smoky Mountains National Park offers kids aged 5 to 12 a fun, interactive way to connect with the park. Families can pick up an activity guide (available at visitor centers or online) that includes a mix of tasks like mapping, observing wildlife, scavenger hunts, and even creative prompts like drawing or writing. After completing at least five activities and five experiences alongside a parent or guardian, children can be officially sworn in as Junior Rangers and receive a badge at any park visitor center.

The current edition of the activity guide is about 32 to 38 pages long and features colorful illustrations, a tear‑out postcard, and a variety of prompts designed to engage kids through exploring, listening, and playing.

White Mountains, New Hampshire

The White Mountains are one of New England’s most popular fall destinations, with peak color usually arriving in early to mid-October. Lincoln and North Conway are good bases for families, with plenty of lodging and easy access to seasonal activities.

Flume Gorge

Flume Gorge in Franconia Notch State Park is a favorite family hike in the White Mountains. The two-mile loop takes about an hour and a half and combines packed gravel paths, boardwalks, and some stairs. The trail leads through an 800-foot granite canyon with walls that rise nearly 90 feet, so kids can experience a dramatic landscape without a difficult hike. Along the way there are waterfalls, covered bridges, and plenty of places to stop for a break, making it a good choice for families looking for a manageable but memorable walk during foliage season.

The Conway Scenic Railroad

The Conway Scenic Railroad in North Conway is one of the most popular ways for families to enjoy fall foliage in the White Mountains. Departing from a historic 1874 station, the train uses vintage cars that make the ride feel like stepping back in time. The shorter Valley Train excursion is an easy option with younger kids, while longer routes like the Mountaineer carry passengers deep into Crawford Notch.

For families who want to mix hiking with the train ride, special tickets allow for a stopover in Crawford, where you can explore trails before returning on the afternoon train. If you’re visiting the White Mountains in September or October, hiking is one of the best ways to take in the fall foliage. • Black Cap (Conway, NH): A 2.4-mile round trip with a gentle climb through beech and oak trees before opening up to views of the White Mountains and western Maine. Great for hikers of all ages.
• Kilburn Crags (Littleton, NH): Just 1.4 miles, this short trail feels more like a nature walk. The summit offers views of Littleton, the Presidential Range, and the Ammonoosuc River Valley, plus a picnic table at the top.

Apple Picking at Windy Ridge Orchard

Apple picking is one of the most popular family activities in the White Mountains during fall, and Windy Ridge Orchard in North Haverhill is a great place to experience it. The orchard grows nearly twenty varieties of apples, including Honeycrisp, Gala, and Macoun. Families can grab a bag and pick at their own pace while enjoying open mountain views and the autumn air.

What makes Windy Ridge especially appealing for kids are the extras that go beyond the apple trees. There are easy walking trails, a small barnyard where kids can meet farm animals, and plenty of space to run between rows. The on-site Cider House Café serves sandwiches, baked goods, and fresh cider, making it a good stop for lunch or a snack before heading back out into the orchard. Parents might also enjoy sampling fruit wines made right at the orchard, while kids love finishing the visit with cider donuts or apple crisp. The atmosphere is relaxed, family-friendly, and full of the season’s best flavors.

Fall Festival at Settlers Green

Another fun way to enjoy the season is the annual Fall Festival at Settlers Green in North Conway. Held each September, this festival blends the charm of small seasonal traditions with the convenience of being located right at the outdoor shopping center. Hunter Mountain Scenic SkyRide

The Hunter Mountain Scenic SkyRide is a six-passenger chairlift that takes you up to 3,200 feet for a view of the Catskills’ fall foliage, from the Berkshires to Vermont’s Green Mountains on a clear day. The ride lasts about 11 minutes each way, making it an easy and scenic way for families to enjoy leaf-peeping without needing a long hike.

Once you reach the top, there’s an option to explore a marked trail that leads to New York State’s highest fire tower. The round-trip hike from the lift is about four miles and takes around three hours. The SkyRide usually runs through peak fall foliage season (check current dates and weather), and kids under seven ride free with a paying adult. Please note: children must be at least three years old and meet height requirements of at least 36 inches.

Kid-Friendly Hiking at Kaaterskill Falls

Kaaterskill Falls is one of the most popular hikes in the Catskills and it works well for families with kids. From the Laurel House trailhead, a short 0.3-mile path leads to an upper viewing platform where you can see the two-tiered waterfall drop more than 260 feet. The trail is wide, gently sloped, and manageable even with younger children, which makes it a good choice if you are looking for a quick outing with a big payoff.

Families who want a longer hike can continue down toward the base of the falls, but the trail is steeper with stone steps and uneven ground. This section is better for older kids who are comfortable with more challenging terrain. Good shoes and close supervision are important, and it is best to stay on the marked paths for safety. Whether you stop at the overlook or make the climb down, Kaaterskill Falls is an accessible way to experience one of the Catskills’ most impressive natural landmarks with children.

Final Thoughts

Fall is a season that feels made for families. The days are cooler, the pace slows down, and nature puts on a show that is easy to enjoy whether you are walking a short trail, riding a gondola, or picking apples together in an orchard.
