Let’s be honest, change is hard for anyone. But when you’re experiencing the world for the first time, like babies and toddlers, different can be downright scary. Since toddlers lack the verbal skills to communicate their fears, new experience can be riddled with tears and tantrums… unless you prepare toddlers for new experiences ahead of time.

As a traveling family, our kids are constantly presented with new experiences. To make sure they are met with smiles instead of tears, we follow a few simple steps.

Why it Helps to Prepare Toddlers for New Experiences

When you prepare toddlers for new experiences ahead of time, you’re doing a few things at once:

• Giving them a sense of control in a world where most things are decided for them
• Helping them build a mental “story” of what will happen, so it doesn’t feel scary in the moment
• Giving them simple language to describe feelings like “nervous,” “loud,” or “too many people”

This doesn’t make every moment perfect, but it usually means fewer surprise meltdowns and more chances for your child to feel proud of themselves for trying something new.

Step-by-Step: How to Prepare Toddlers for New Experiences

Below are the exact steps we use before a big change, like a trip, a special outing, or even a new class. You can use just one, or layer them together for extra support.

1. Talk to Them

Well ahead of the new place, event, person, or thing they’re going to experience, start talking them through what’s going to happen. Go step by step, speaking slowly, using words they understand. Track their facial expressions for any concerns that may arise. Use your initial chat as a script, and go over daily to make sure they are ready. We like to do this daily at bed time, but any time would work.

2. Show Them Pictures and Videos

Show them pictures and videos of the new experience. It’s easy to do this if it’s a place you’ve been. If you haven’t, YouTube and Google image search are great resources. Comment like a narrator on what’s happening in the video or picture, and let them ask questions. As you did with the talk track, show them these visuals often leading up to the new experience.

3. Role Play How the Experience Will Unfold

Role play how the experience will unfold. For example, if you’re going on a flight, grab an empty suitcase or backpack. Pack it into the car, and pretend you’re headed to their airport. If they’re meeting a new person, pretend you are that person and let them interact with you. Notice when they get stuck, and listen for how they role play to catch any potential concerns they can’t verbalize.

A Real-Life Example: First Flight After a Long Break

These simple tricks have helped our toddlers become pros at facing change and new experiences. In fact, our older son just had his first flight since before the pandemic, and he faced it like a champ. He had been on over 20 flights before the pandemic, but he didn’t remember any of them! He was slightly nervous about the plane being too loud, which he was able to communicate head of time. This helped me show him videos with plane noises, so he could hear what it will be like and mentally prepare. I also brought noice canceling headphones to help with his concerns about the noise. He didn’t even need them!

This is exactly why we continue to prepare toddlers for new experiences even when they’ve technically “done it before.” Time passes, they forget, and their brains process the world differently as they grow. The more we practice, talk, and play through things in advance, the more confident they become when it’s time to actually go.

So many of us women who love to travel go through some big life transitions. First, we’re traveling solo or with friends, then with a partner. But what happens when you become pregnant? Many of us think that our travel days are over, but think again! Traveling while pregnant can be a fabulous and safe experience, with a little preparation. In fact, during my pregnancy, I took nine trips (including one international). As always, check in with your doctor before making any travel plans to ensure you and baby are healthy enough to be away from home.

First Trimester

Take It Slow

For anyone who plans trips in advance, traveling while pregnant may inevitably fall during your first trimester. Unfortunately, many of us aren’t lucky enough to plan exactly when we will get pregnant, and an upcoming trip after your positive pregnancy test might already be in the calendar.

For many women, the hormonal changes that come with the first trimester hit you like a ton of bricks. You’re nauseous, tired, and hungry, while trying to navigate your changing body. My best advice for first trimester travel is to slow things down.

Even though I was nauseous through my first trimester, I thought that I would be able to travel as I used to. That meant being super active with sightseeing, walking around, and experiencing all our destinations had to offer. Well, my body and baby had different plans.

On a trip to Washington, DC, my husband and I decided to walk around the Tidal Basin to see the cherry blossoms. It was a leisurely stroll that took us about an hour. Problems arose when we decided to walk the additional 20 minutes back to our hotel. Typically, this would have been fine. It was a beautiful spring day.

The walk was slightly uphill (about a 5% incline) which normally wouldn’t have been an issue. But while pregnant, it became a huge challenge (as your growing belly can constrict your diaphragm, making deep breaths harder). What should have been a 20-minute walk took us over an hour. People of all ages were passing me on both sides as I huffed and puffed up this tiny hill, completely out of breath. It was frustrating, and I hadn’t realized just how much my body had changed in such a short time.

A few weeks later, when we traveled to the Finger Lakes for a wedding, I was better prepared to take it slow. The walk from our rental house to the wedding venue was only 15 minutes, but I made sure to allow for an hour just in case. And when it came to the end of the reception and friends wanted to go out, I went to bed. The moral of the story is, in your first trimester, allow yourself more time than you would have in the past.

Tips for Traveling in the First Trimester:

1. Rest Often: Schedule downtime between activities, such as a morning nap or an afternoon lounge at the hotel.
2. Pack Anti-Nausea Essentials: Sea Bands, Preggie Pops and ginger chews were lifesavers for me! If your nausea becomes unbearable, consult your doctor about medications that can help make your experience more manageable.
3. Choose Nearby Destinations: Stick to locations that don’t require long-haul flights to avoid overexertion.
4. Bring Layers: Hormonal changes can make you feel hot or cold unexpectedly. Having layers ensures you’re comfortable.

Recommended Places to Visit:

• Relaxing Retreats: Coastal towns or lakeside cabins for quiet, scenic environments.
• Easy Urban Getaways: Cities with minimal walking and good public transportation.

Essential Items for First Trimester Travel:

• Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated throughout the trip.
• Snacks: High-protein options like this protein powder (that I used!) that can be mixed into a water bottle for on the go or nuts to combat sudden hunger.
• Comfortable Shoes: Opt for slip-on sneakers or flats with excellent arch support to keep your feet comfortable and supported during long walks or travel days. I also wore orthodic inserts in my shoes throughout my pregnancies. You can get fitted for them at at Dr. Scholl’s Orthodics Kiosk. Find a location near you here.
• Comfortable Clothes: Choose lightweight, breathable fabrics to stay cool and comfortable. Even if your body hasn’t changed significantly yet, avoid jeans or any clothing that might compress your belly. Prioritize stretchable and relaxed fits for ease of movement.

Second Trimester

Get Active

The second trimester is the best time for traveling while pregnant. For many women, the nausea and exhaustion stop. You’re getting more comfortable in your growing body. Your energy goes up, and you’re feeling great, maybe even glowing! It’s the perfect time to take your babymoon, especially if you enjoy active city sightseeing or adventure travel.

We decided to do a little bit of both and took a 2-week trip out west to see some of the national parks in Utah and Arizona. That’s right, I hiked the Grand Canyon at 22 weeks pregnant. And you can, too! Bring along the lesson from your first trimester. Take things slow, but also relish in your newfound energy and that pregnancy glow.

Tips for Traveling in the Second Trimester:

1. Plan a Babymoon: This is the ideal time for a getaway with your partner.
2. Stay Active: Incorporate light hiking, walking tours, or yoga classes into your itinerary. Exercise helps prepare your body for labor and deliveryby strengthening your muscles and giving you energy and strength.
3. Listen to Your Body: Take breaks when needed and don’t push beyond your comfort zone.
4. Prepare for Sun Exposure: A natural increase in melanin during pregnancy is responsible for areas of darkened skin, especially on the face. To minimize this “mask of pregnancy” called chloasma, be sure to wear sunscreen and a hat while in the sun.
5. Consider Travel Health Insurance: It’s essential to have travel pregnancy insurance that includes coverage for pregnancy-related care and potential medical emergencies, especially when traveling abroad. Verify that your policy covers prenatal checkups, complications, and emergency delivery, as well as any costs associated with healthcare in your destination country. Always review the terms carefully before your trip.

Recommended Places to Visit:

• National Parks: Enjoy light hikes and scenic views at Zion, Yellowstone, or Bryce Canyon.
• Resorts and Beaches: All-inclusive resorts in places like Mexico or the Caribbean are perfect for relaxation and pampering.

Essential Items for Second Trimester Travel:

• Maternity Belt: Helps support your growing belly during long walks.
• Travel Compression Socks: Great for preventing swelling during flights or long drives.
• Maternity Swimsuit: For poolside relaxation or beach adventures.
• Light Backpack: Keep essentials like snacks, water, and your phone easily accessible.

Third Trimester

Relax & Reconnect

For me and for many women, you bring your good pregnancy feelings from the second trimester into the third. The only issue is that your body is continuing to grow, and that, more than anything, is what will limit you physically if you are traveling while pregnant in the third trimester. Although it’s super important to bring along what you learned in the first two trimesters—take things slow and remain active (you have to prepare for the birth, after all!)—the third trimester is the perfect time for you to pamper yourself, relax, and preemptively catch up on the sleep you’ll soon miss.

As always, ask your doctor if it’s safe for you to travel any time during pregnancy but especially in your third trimester. Many airlines prohibit pregnant women from flying after 36 weeks and require a letter from your midwife or GP after 28 weeks confirming your due date, health, and an uncomplicated pregnancy. My doctor cleared me fortraveling while pregnant, but we decided to keep most of our trips short and close to home.

One of my favorite trips we did in the third trimester was a weekend at a winery/spa about 2 hours from where we lived. It was the perfect place for pampering, yummy food, romantic dinners, and lounging by the pool. It was also really special for me that we brought home a few bottles of wine from my husband’s tasting (I, of course, did not taste any wine!) to enjoy together after our son was born.

Your third trimester is ideal for checking in with yourself and your partner. Your life is about to change in a huge and wonderful way. Enjoy these last few months of traveling as a twosome. Do things that you might not get to do in the coming months like long, leisurely dinners, spa days, and trips to the theater.

Tips for Traveling in the Third Trimester:

1. Stay Close to Home: Choose destinations within a few hours of travel time in case you experience any early labor symptoms.
2. Prioritize Comfort: Opt for luxurious accommodations with spa services or amenities like a pool.
3. Make a Note of Local Hospital Locations: Research nearby healthcare facilities in case of an emergency. Confirm with your health insurance if you already have travel pregnancy insurance for coverage in case any inconvenience occurs.

Recommended Places to Visit:

• Local Getaways: Quaint bed-and-breakfasts or nearby spa resorts.
• Short Road Trips: Explore charming countryside towns or scenic drives.
• Staycations: Book a luxury hotel in your city to enjoy some pampering without the travel hassle.

Essential Items for Third Trimester Travel:

• Maternity Pillow: A must-have for hotel stays to ensure a good night’s sleep.
• Loose, Comfortable Clothing: Maxi dresses or stretchy maternity leggings for ultimate comfort.
• Hospital Bag Checklist: If you’re close to your due date, pack essentials just in case.

Throughout Your Pregnancy

A few lessons that I learned along the way that will apply to every trip during your pregnancy:

• Hydrate: Water is so important during pregnancy, whether you’re near or far from home. Carry a water bottle with you and make sure you’re getting as much as you need.
• Bring snacks: You never know when a hunger attack is going to hit.
• Wear supportive shoes: Avoid swelling and discomfort with good footwear.
• Know where the bathrooms are: You are going to have to go more than you think.
• Encourage circulation: Wear compression socks and take walking breaks.
• Bring comfort items: Travel with anything that helps you feel at ease, even if it takes up more space in your bag.

About once a month, we go to a restaurant, ideally with new foods for our kids to try. Learning about new cultures through shared food is so fun and helps picky eaters branch out. The “America the Beautiful – National Parks and Federal Lands Pass” provides access to over 2,000 federal recreation sites for $80. This pass is valid for 12 months from the date of purchase and admits the pass holder plus passengers in the same non-commercial vehicle to many parks sites around the country. With this pass, the whole family can enjoy stunning recreation areas across the United States, with proceeds going towards enhancing visitor services and site improvements. We are America the Beautiful pass holders, and we recently used our pass to spend a wonderful day in Sandy Hook, NJ, where both of our boys earned junior ranger badges.

There is also a version of this pass for US citizens or permanent residents of any age that have been medically determined to have a permanent disability called the Access Pass. This pass is free, and if your loved one qualifies, you can help the family facilitate getting the pass, which requires some paperwork to be filled out and turned in at a National Parks site.

Legoland Florida is our sons’ wishlist right now, and we have a Legoland Discovery Center nearby our home that my mother in law got the boys’ a membership to. • Best For: Travelers working toward a specific airline redemption. Since we now live nearest to an American Airlines hub, we use the AAdvantage Shopping portal often, including the browser extension.

2. Credit Card Rewards Portals

Card issuers like Chase, American Express, and Capital One also offer shopping portals where you can earn additional rewards:

• Example: Use the Chase portal to earn bonus points at stores like Apple, Sephora, or Walmart.
• Best For: Maximizing transferable points programs like Chase Ultimate Rewards or Amex Membership Rewards. We love earning Chase Ultimate Rewards and find them so valuable, especially for booking Hyatt stays, so this is another go-to strategy for us.

3. Cashback Portals

If you prefer cashback over travel points or you love American Express or Bilt, portals like Rakuten (formerly Ebates) or TopCashback are excellent options:

• Example: Rakuten lets you earn Amex Membership Rewards or Bilt points instead of cashback when linked to your account. You must be a current Amex card holder to earn Amex points, but you do not have to be a Bilt cardholder to earn Bilt points. Both allow you to transfer points to hotels and airlines for nearly free travel.
• Best For: Flexible rewards that can either offset expenses or fund your travel plans. I’ve been using Rakuten for years, previously to earn cashback, but I recently switched it over to earning Memership Rewards.

Pro tip: While there is the option to stack with credit card bonuses and category multipliers, you can typically only shop through one shopping portal at a time. Clicking on one and then clicking on another will typically deactivate the first one you clicked on.

Maximizing Points with Credit Card Linked Offers

Shopping portals are an easy and rewarding way to earn extra points, but you can further boost your earnings by activating credit card linked offers. These bonuses are tied to specific categories, promotions, or rotating offers that can make your online purchases even more rewarding by using the specific card the offer is on. Here’s how to activate your offers and make the most of both shopping portals and credit card rewards.

How to Activate Offers on Your Credit Cards

1. Check Your Credit Card’s Website or App

Most credit card issuers make it easy to activate offers directly through their website or mobile app:

• Log into Your Account: Start by logging into your credit card account either through the website or the mobile app.
• Look for Promotions or Offers: On the dashboard, look for a section related to rewards or bonuses. This may be labeled as “Earn More,” “Bonus Categories,” or “Special Offers.”
• Activate the Offer: Once you’ve found the available bonuses or categories, there should be a button or link to activate the offer. Some issuers, like Chase, even offer the ability to activate rotating categories for each quarter.

Example: Chase Freedom Flex offers rotating 5% cashback on specific categories each quarter (like groceries or dining). To activate, go to the “Rewards” section in your Chase account, select the current quarter’s offer, and click to activate. If you hold a Chase Ultimate Rewards earning card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred, you can also turn your cashback from the Chase Freedom Flex into points.

2. Check Your Card’s Offers Page

Some credit cards provide detailed information about their rewards program through a separate “Rewards” section or tab. For example, the American Express Membership Rewards program has a dedicated portal where cardholders can review available promotions and activate specific bonuses.

• Look for Special Categories: These might include extra points for certain purchases, such as travel bookings or grocery shopping, or even at certain retailers.
• Activate in Advance: Most rewards bonuses must be activated in advance of a purchase. For instance, one of my cards was recently offering 5x points back at CVS, but I had to activate that offer in my bank’s website before I ran by card at CVS.

3. Sign Up for Alerts and Email Notifications

To make sure you never miss an opportunity to activate a bonus, sign up for email alerts or push notifications from your credit card issuer. Many issuers send out notifications when new offers or promotions become available. These reminders can help you stay on top of activation deadlines. All of the credit cards I hold send me emails multiple times a month to let me know what bonuses are available, but it is on you to go in and activate them.

4. Monitor for Targeted Offers

Some credit cards may also have targeted offers based on your spending habits. These offers are often personalized and can give you additional rewards on specific categories like online shopping or gas purchases. Be sure to check your account regularly to spot these special offers.

• Log In Regularly: Even if you don’t see any obvious promotions, check your account frequently for updates or bonus offers.
• Activate as Soon as Possible: Targeted offers may expire after a certain time frame, so activating them as soon as you see them is crucial.

Why Points and Miles Offer More Value Than Cashback

Let’s break it down. Cashback rewards are simple — you earn a fixed percentage (like 1.5%) back on everything you buy. It’s predictable but capped.

Points, on the other hand, can multiply in value depending on how you use them. That’s because not all points are created equal. When you redeem travel rewards wisely — like transferring them to an airline or hotel partner — you can easily get 2X, 3X, or even 5X the return you’d get from straight cashback.

For example:

• A flight might cost 40,000 points, with a cash value of $800.
• Those same 40,000 points if cashed out would get you $400.

The value comes from the higher return you get for using your points for travel instead of simply taking the cash.

What’s the Difference Between Points and Cashback?

At the simplest level:

• Cashback gives you a fixed return — usually 1–2% of what you spend.
• Points and miles can fluctuate in value depending on how you redeem them.

For example, $1,000 in spending at 2% cashback gives you $20.
That same $1,000 on a travel rewards card earning 3x points = 3,000 points.

If those points are worth 2 cents each when transferred to an airline partner, that’s $60 in travel value — triple what you’d earn in cashback.

That’s the first big difference: flexibility and potential value.

The Math: Cents Per Point (CPP) and Real-Life Examples

To really understand why points win, you need to know one key concept: cents per point, or CPP.

Formula:
(Value of redemption ÷ number of points used) × 100 = CPP

Let’s say you book a flight that costs $900 cash or 45,000 points.

• $900 ÷ 45,000 = 0.02, or 2 cents per point (2 CPP).

That’s a 2% return — and that’s before counting the points you earned from the purchase itself or from card bonuses.

Compare that to a flat 1.5% cashback card — the travel redemption already wins by 33%, and that’s a conservative example. Many premium redemptions (like business-class flights or luxury hotels) can easily hit 4–6 CPP or more.

Real Example: Family Travel for a Fraction of the Cost

When we took our family to Europe, flights were priced around $4,000 total. Instead, we transferred points to Air France Flying Blue and booked them for 120,000 points and $400 in taxes.

That’s roughly 3 CPP, or the equivalent of getting $3 back for every $1 spent — far better than any cashback card could dream of. For comparison, you would have to spend $200,000 on a 2% cashback card to earn those same $4,000.

Imagine descending from the lush jungle and bright sunshine above into a dark, cool underground cave. Armed only with flashlights against the complete darkness, you’ll walk through a space that feels otherworldly. This is what the Hana Lava Tube, one of our favorite Road to Hana stops, has in store for you. If you’ve ever dreamed of stepping inside a real volcanic cave, this spot offers the perfect chance to do just that! What makes this adventure unique is that it’s not a well-known tourist attraction—yet, it offers an incredibly unique experience.

What is the Hana Lava Tube?

Formed approximately 960 years ago as a result of molten lava spewing up from underground and flowing toward the ocean, the Hana Lava Tube is one of the most fascinating Road to Hana stops. As the lava flowed down the landscape, the outer layer cooled and hardened, creating a crust that allowed the molten lava beneath to continue flowing for about two more years. When the lava finally drained out, it left behind a massive underground tunnel, now the largest lava tube in Maui and the 18th largest in the world. Despite its impressive size, experts estimate that only about half of the cave has been discovered, hinting at even more hidden chambers.

For kids, there’s the chance to feel like a real explorer, discovering what feels like the deepest untouched parts of the earth. For parents, there’s history, science, and an experience that feels truly Hawaiian, connecting you to the island’s volcanic past. It also offered a great opportunity to get out of the car, stretch our legs, and explore something new on the Road to Hana drive. Here’s everything you need to know about our experience at the Hana Lava Tube and how you can plan yours.

First Impressions and Arrival

Upon arrival, the Hana Lava Tube is so unassuming that you might actually miss it. The entrance consists only of a simple check-in table outside on what looked like a farm. The whole area is surrounded by open land, with a parking lot that seemed to double as an open field. There is a small building nearby, which looks like a shop, but we didn’t go in.

The check-in process is straightforward. A friendly man sat at the table, ready to welcome visitors. We didn’t book anything in advance, as the website says you don’t need to. According to their website, you can show up anytime during their open hours. However, the one thing to be cautious about is arriving on time. They won’t let you in if you arrive too close to closing, so plan accordingly.

The entry fee of $15 per person has to be paid in cash (kids 5 and under are free). There’s an ATM onsite if you need one. After paying, we were handed a set of flashlights and set off into the cave.

The Visit

To enter the Hana Lava Tube, you’ll first walk down a set of steps with a handrail. Stay close to little ones here, as it can be slippery with water dripping down in spots from the ground above. The lava tube is completely dark, and I mean pitch black. The temperature ranges between 66 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the year, and the humidity remains a constant 70%. Without a light source, it would be impossible to see anything. With kids, keep everyone close and keep your flashlights shining on the walking path. The floor of the cave is uneven in places, so be sure to watch your step.

The Lava Tube itself is self-guided. There is no rush, no tour guide hurrying us along, and no crowds. This allowed us to move at our own pace and take the time we needed to explore. Our kids really enjoyed how adventurous it felt to explore such a unique natural space.

Along the path, you’ll encounter features like ropey pahoehoe, lava level lines, and lava stalagmites, as well as unique geological structures such as contraction cracks, a cinder floor surface, and re-entry passages. The Hana Lava Tube is also home to fascinating blind cave insects like crickets, flatworms, and millipedes, although we didn’t encounter any. There are no bats and no mosquitoes unlike other types of caves, which is a huge bonus. Some areas of the cave have been given quirky names like the “chocolate corridor of stalactites” and “the bowling alley”.

Along the walking path, you’ll find information plaques scattered throughout the cave. Each plaque provided some interesting facts about the Lava Tube, its formation, and the volcanic activity that shaped it. Our older son was eager to play “tour guide” and read the details about what we were seeing.

The walk inside the Lava Tube is a roundtrip that takes around 40 minutes in total. After walking for a while, we reached a point in the cave where the tour operator’s property ended. There is a clear sign letting us know that this was as far as we could go, and it instructed us to turn around and head back the way we came. The tour was just the right length to keep everyone engaged.

Is the Hana Lava Tube worth it?

Yes! Our entire family enjoyed this off-the-beaten path adventure. The entire experience of venturing into an underground cave formed by lava was something we’d never experienced before and probably won’t soon again. It was also a great opportunity to break up the Road to Hana drive. For anyone planning to visit the Hana Lava Tube, here are a few helpful tips that will make your visit more enjoyable:

Bring Cash for the Entry Fee

As I mentioned earlier, you will need cash to pay the entry fee, so be sure to have some on hand before you arrive. There was an ATM onsite at the time of our visit should you need one.

Use the Flashlights Provided

The cave is in complete darkness, and you will not be able to see anything, including where you’re walking, without them. You should get one for everyone in your party, including the little ones.

Wear Appropriate Shoes

The ground inside the cave is uneven and can be slippery and wet in some spots, so make sure everyone is wearing shoes with grip. While it’s not a strenuous walk, you’ll want to feel stable on your feet, especially when walking with kids. Here are some of our favorite hiking essentials, including hiking sandals that are perfect for this excursion.

Prepare for Drips

It rained on and off while we were on the Road to Hana, as it often does in Maui, and despite the Hana Lava Tube being underground, you will get some leaky spots from the ground above. Most of us didn’t mind, but my little guy hates getting his head wet, so he was kind of bothered by the occasional drop landing on him. If that bothers you, wear a rain jacket with a hood inside the cave.

Check the Open Hours

The Hana Lava Tube is open for self-guided cave tours 7 days a week, 365 days a year, 10:30 am to 4:00 pm. Despite the wide offering of open days and times, it’s best to arrive 40 minutes before closing or more to make sure you can get in for the last tour of the day. The Road to Hana drive can be unpredictable in terms of timing and traffic, so do your best to plan ahead.

Great for All Ages

The self-guided nature of the tour makes it suitable for families with kids of all ages. You can take your time, explore at your own pace, and stop to rest whenever you need to. Just be sure to keep a close eye on younger children as the cave can be dark and the ground uneven. It’s also recommended that you have good vision and be physically fit for walking on natural terrain.

Preparing for Your Visit

Hana Lava Tube Tickets

Entry to the Hana Lava Tube costs $15 per person. Children ages 5 and under can enter for free. The entrance fee includes a high powered flashlight for each person. The tour is self-guided and typically takes around 40 minutes.

Lava Tube Hours

The lava tube is open year-round, every day from 10:30 am to 4:00 pm. No reservations are needed, just arrive during the open hours to start your tour.

Where are the Lava Tubes in Hawaii?

To reach the Hana Lava Tube, start from Kahului and take the famous Hana Highway (Highway 360) heading toward Hana. After passing mile marker 31, make a left turn onto Ulaino Road. Continue driving for about 0.4 miles, and you’ll see the entrance to the Hana Lava Tube visitor center. If you’re traveling from West Maui areas like Lahaina or Ka’anapali, or from South Maui spots like Kihei or Wailea, plan for a drive time of around 3 hours to reach the lava tube. I highly recommend renting a car. Alternatively, you can book a Road to Hana guided tour.

Are there facilities in the Lava Tube?

Public restrooms are located outside the cave, so you’ll want to stop in before starting the tour. There are also picnic tables available.

Are there other things to do?

On the property you’ll find a Red Ti Botanical Garden Maze. It seems like a fun activity for adults and kids alike.

There’s a moment—usually when hearing the ship’s horn echo across the harbor—when it hits you: you’re officially on your family cruise vacation, and everything is taken care of. That “all-in-one” magic is exactly why more parents like us decided to swap another road-trip for a first family cruise. Meals appear without grocery shopping, stateroom stewards transform towel squares into elephants, and the kids’ club team somehow makes your 6 year-old’s day. In this guide, I’m sharing the cruise tips you need to plan your family’s stress-free high-seas vacation.

Why Families Love Cruising

Cruising with kids has exploded in popularity and for good reason. Here’s why a family cruise might just be the easiest vacation you’ll ever plan:

• One room, many destinations. Unpack once, wake up to a new place every morning.
• Built-in childcare. Youth programs run morning to late night; some ships even have dedicated nurseries starting at six months.
• Predictable budgets. Meals, shows, kids’ clubs, splash zones, and late-night pizza are included in the fare.
• Something for everyone. Dedicated spaces for kids and adults, plus a wide variety of activities make this the perfect multigenerational trip.

Booking a Family Cruise

What’s Included in a Family Cruise Fare?

When you book a family cruise, your fare includes more than just a room. It covers accommodations, meals in the main dining rooms and buffet, kids’ clubs, pools, entertainment, and basic drinks like water, tea, and coffee and sometimes iced tea and lemonade (other juices are typically only free at breakfast). Most onboard shows, games, and activities are free, making it easy to keep everyone entertained without extra spending. That said, some things cost extra, like specialty restaurants, soda, and alcoholic drinks, Wi-Fi, shore excursions, and gratuities (tips). Many cruise lines offer bundled packages that include drinks or Wi-Fi, so if you catch a promo, you can simplify your budget and avoid surprise charges later.

Gratuities are typically mandatory on most cruises and are automatically added to your onboard account—they’re not included in the base fare. They usually range from $14 to $20 per person, per day, depending on the cruise line and your cabin type. Many cruisers will also choose to tip their stateroom attendant, bartenders, and other staff on top of the mandatory gratuities.

When to Book a Family Cruise

If you’re planning a family cruise, understanding when to book is key to locking in savings and getting the cabins that fit your crew.

Booking during Wave Season, which runs from January to March, offers some of the biggest savings. Cruise lines typically release most of their inventory for the following year during this time, and you’ll often find promotions like 40–60% off a second guest or “Kids Sail Free” offers. For families, try to book 9 to 12 months in advance to secure the best cabins, especially family staterooms, which are limited and sell out quickly. (Family staterooms on cruises are larger, specifically designed cabins that can accommodate families, typically accommodating 4 or more guests.)

If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly and less crowded time to sail, consider the shoulder seasons:

• Caribbean: September through October (also hurricane season—more on this below)
• Alaska: May and September
• Mediterranean: May and October

Fares during these months often drop 15–25% compared to peak-season prices, and you’ll enjoy cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and calmer waters: especially helpful if your kids are prone to motion sickness.

For flexible families, last-minute deals booked within 60 days of sailing can offer up to 30% savings. Just know that family cabins are rarely available at the last minute, so these deals work best for smaller families or those willing to book standard-sized inside rooms.

How Early Should You Book Your Cruise?

Inside & Ocean-View Cabins

If you’re looking for a bargain, waiting until 60 to 90 days before sailing. Around this time, cruise lines have a better sense of how full their ships are and will often start discounting unsold cabins to fill them. You could get savings of up to 30% off the earlier fares.

However, keep in mind: not every cruise line or itinerary follows this pattern. Some luxury lines or very popular sailings (like Alaska in peak summer) sell out early across all cabin types. But for most big family-friendly lines like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian, waiting for a last-minute deal on an inside or ocean-view cabin can work well: if your dates are flexible and you’re not picky about the exact cabin location.

Balcony cabins

When it comes to balcony cabins, the game changes. These are always popular with families: extra breathing room, ocean views, and the perfect private, outdoor spot for quiet nap time or early-morning coffee while the kids sleep in.

Balcony cabins tend to spike in price (sometimes by 15% or more) during school vacations like spring break, summer, and the holidays. If you want one of these (it’s our go-to choice a family cruise), it’s best to book 9 to 12 months in advance to lock in better rates and secure your ideal location on the ship.

Family suites

Family suites are bigger cabins with extra bedrooms, two bathrooms, and room to actually spread out. The catch? Cruise ships don’t have many of them, sometimes just a handful per ship, and as expected, they will be priced much higher than standard rooms.

Because they’re in high demand and low supply, you’ll usually need to book 12 months or more in advance to get one. For the newest, most popular ships, you’ll want to place the deposit on a family suite as soon as bookings open for your desired sail date. Some families even pre-register with travel agents for early access, especially on ships like Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas or Disney Cruise Line’s newest launches, where these family-friendly suites disappear fast.

Where to Go on Your First Family Cruise

A well-chosen itinerary is the secret that turns a good family cruise into an unforgettable experience. Destinations determine sailing length, sea conditions, excursion options.

Caribbean

The Caribbean is the most popular choice for first-time family cruisers and for good reason. Warm weather, short flights from the U.S., and plenty of family-friendly ports make it an easy win.

• Western Caribbean (Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Jamaica)
  This route typically offers calmer waters, beach-based excursions, and plenty of all-ages fun like turtle farms, pirate-themed boat rides, and all-inclusive beach clubs.
• Eastern Caribbean (St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Puerto Rico)
  These ports bring a nice mix of soft adventure and culture. Think historic forts, shopping, and scenic trams. It’s best to sail here in January through early spring, when the weather is dry and sunny.

Caribbean Shoulder Season Cruises: Worth the Risk?

Let’s talk about sailing the Caribbean in shoulder season — typically September and October. It’s often the cheapest time to cruise, but it does overlap with hurricane season.

Here’s the reality:

• Hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, peaking between mid-August and early October.
• Cruise ships are excellent at avoiding storms. They monitor weather 24/7, adjust routes in real-time, and prioritize safety. Sometimes this means swapping ports or altering itineraries last minute (port changes can also happen outside of hurricane season for a number of reasons).
• Some destinations — like Aruba, Cozumel, Grand Cayman, and Jamaica — are less prone to storm disruptions compared to the Eastern Caribbean.

Why families still choose this season:

• Lower prices — often 30% less than peak fares.
• Fewer crowds — shorter lines, easier embarkation, and quieter beaches.
• Perfect temperatures — still in the mid-80s°F, ideal for beach days.

Things to know before booking:

• Travel insurance is a must: look for policies that cover trip interruptions or cancellations due to weather.
• Stay flexible: ports or itineraries can change with little notice.
• Choose newer, larger ships: they offer more activities, so a surprise sea day feels less stressful.
• Opt for Western Caribbean itineraries: they typically experience fewer hurricane disruptions.

Booking a family cruise during shoulder season can be a fantastic deal if you’re well-prepared. While I personally lean toward avoiding hurricane season in the Caribbean—mainly out of necessity because our kids are in school then, it’s worth mentioning because many families do sail during this time and have a wonderful, sunny trip.

Alaska

If your family loves wildlife, wide-open views, and cooler temps, Alaska is an unforgettable option. Cruises typically run from May to September, and some of the best for families are sailings from Seattle, which doesn’t require passports for U.S. citizens under 16. (Note: If your itinerary departs from or returns to Vancouver, kids will need a valid passport.)

Choose an itinerary with Glacier Bay or Tracy Arm Fjord, and book a balcony cabin if possible, your kids might just spot whales, seals, or bald eagles without ever leaving the room.

Popular port stops like Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan offer family-friendly excursions like dog-sledding, glacier hikes, and lumberjack shows.

Mediterranean

A Mediterranean cruise is a fantastic way to combine sightseeing with comfort: no packing and unpacking between cities. Ideal for spring break or early summer, these sailings avoid peak heat and crowd levels while still letting you visit Europe’s most iconic destinations.

Classic 7-night itineraries from Barcelona or Rome (Civitavecchia) often include stops like:

• Naples for Pompeii or pizza-making classes
• Florence/Pisa from Livorno
• Villefranche as a gateway to Nice and Monaco
• Palma de Mallorca or Valencia for beaches + bike tours

Mediterranean cruises usually have a stop almost every day, with very few sea days to rest in between, so they’re best for kids (and parents) who can handle exploring new cities day after day.

Money-Saving Cruise Tips

Kids Sail Free Calendars

Several cruise lines offer Kids Sail Free deals that can make a family cruise much more affordable. Here’s a quick look at who’s offering what:

• MSC Cruises: Kids under 18 sail free year-round on select sailings when they share a cabin with their parents. Taxes and port fees still apply.
• Norwegian Cruise Line: Offers seasonal “Friends and Family Sail Free” promotions where third and fourth guests in a cabin (often your kids) cruise free.
• Royal Caribbean: Known for seasonal Kids Sail Free deals, usually during major sales like Black Friday and Wave Season. Kids 12 and under are typically eligible.
• Costa Cruises: Kids up to 18 sail free when sharing a cabin with two adults, on select itineraries. Extra fees like port charges and insurance still apply.
• Disney Cruise Line: Disney doesn’t typically run “Kids Sail Free” promotions like other cruise lines. On occassion, they offer some promotions. For example: Kids Sail Half Price deals exclusively for Disney+ subscribers. On select sailings (past e.g., January–June 2025 on Disney Wish, Dream, and Wonder), the 3rd and 4th guests under 18 in a stateroom sail at 50% off. Sometimes they offer toddlers under three sail free on shoulder-season cruises.

Always double-check the fine print: these promotions often have blackout dates, limited availability, and require you to pay taxes and port fees separately.

Price-Drop Monitoring

Some cruise lines offer a price-drop guarantee, meaning if the price of your cruise fare drops before your final payment is due, you can reprice and get the lower rate.

Here’s how it usually works:

1. You book your family cruise with a refundable deposit (or sometimes even a non-refundable one).
2. The fare can fluctuate between the time you book and the final payment date (usually 90 to 120 days before departure).
3. If the price drops, you (or your travel agent) can request a price adjustment, onboard credit, or upgrade (depending on the line’s policy).

Cruise Lines That Typically Allow Price Drops Before Final Payment

• Royal Caribbean: Allows repricing anytime before final payment, if you book under a refundable deposit.
• Norwegian Cruise Line: Allows fare adjustments before final payment, especially with refundable deposit bookings.
• Carnival Cruise Line: You can reprice or receive onboard credit before final payment if the rate drops.
• Celebrity Cruises: Similar policy to Royal Caribbean (they’re under the same parent company, Royal Caribbean Group).
• Princess Cruises: More selective, but fare adjustments are often allowed before final payment under certain fare codes (especially refundable ones).

Important Notes:

• Once you make the final payment, most cruise lines won’t adjust the fare. At that point, you’re locked in. If you want to be able to price adjust, leave a small amount of the final payment left to pay until the final due date.
• Non-refundable deposit fares may have stricter rules or penalties for changes.
• Luxury lines like Viking are less flexible and often don’t allow repricing after booking.

Tools to Watch Price Drops:

• Shipmate app: lets you set alerts for your specific cruise.
• Google Alerts: set up with your cruise name and ship (e.g., “Wonder of the Seas June 2025 price drop”).
• Cruise travel agents: many will monitor price changes for you and automatically request an adjustment.

Always double-check when final payment is due — it’s your deadline to grab a lower fare if one pops up.

Loyalty & Card Perks

Status Matching

• Status Matching with MSC Cruises: One travel hack that often surprises families is status matching, MSC Cruises does this. You can submit your status from other programs (like Hilton Honors, Marriott Bonvoy, or Royal Caribbean Crown & Anchor) and be matched to a comparable tier in MSC’s Voyagers Club. MSC is the only major line open to cross-industry status matches with hotels and other lines.
• Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, and Silversea share status within their own network.

Credit Cards

• Capital One Travel: Sometimes rebates 5-10% of cruise fares booked through its portal. You can also use Capital One’s “cover your travel purchase” tool to “erase” your cruise-related purchases with points.
• Onboard Charging: Pay your account balance with a points-earning credit card on the ship to earn reward points. Charges on-board cruise lines qualify as travel on most rewards cards.

Cabin Pricing

Look for “Interior Plus” or “Oceanview Family” layouts with pull-down bunks; they start ~20% above standard interior rates yet cost half a balcony. Two connecting interior cabins often total less money than one balcony room. The extra bathroom alone may be worth the trade if you’re traveling with teens, as cruise ship bathrooms are notoriously small.

Skip the Drink Package

The cost of the drink package is typically not worth it for kids, when most cruise lines offer free juice at breakfast and free water, iced tea, and lemonade throughout the day. If your kids are soda drinkers, check your cruise line’s policy for how many cans of soda you can bring onboard with you in addition to the included drinks.

Resident & Military Discounts

Many cruise lines offer special fares for residents of certain U.S. states, especially those near cruise ports. For example, Florida residents often receive discounted rates on cruises departing from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, or Port Canaveral. These offers are typically only valid for sailings that leave from the same state you live in. So if you’re a Floridian, the discount usually applies to cruises leaving from Florida ports. Disney Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Lines, and others often have specific rates or discounts available for Florida residents.

Norwegian Cruise Line often offers resident rates for various coastal states beyond Florida, including Texas, California, New York, and Louisiana. These discounts can be up to 20%.

Resident Rate promos can happen in many states on select sailings and are subject to availability, so it’s worth entering your zip code when booking directly on the cruise line’s website to see if you qualify. You must be able to show ID proving residency, otherwise the cruise line will reprice you at the pier, which can be very costly.

For military families, several cruise lines offer year-round discounts for active duty, retired, and reserve members of the U.S. and Canadian armed forces.

Carnival leads in this space with reduced rates and even allows bookings of multiple cabins under the military rate for qualifying service members.

Royal Caribbean, Princess and Disney Cruise Line offers special military rates on select cruises, though they typically apply only to the service member’s cabin.

Teens (13-17) hang out at Entourage, a lounge-style space with games and music. For little ones, Guppies offers supervised playtimes (with a parent present) for ages 6 to 36 months.

• Mini-Suite: extra-large balcony cabin with spacious bathroom (double sink, oversized shower).

Final Thoughts

I used to feel the same way! But here’s the good news: you don’t need a registered business to qualify. In fact, opening business cards could be one of the easiest ways to supercharge your rewards. Let’s break it down.

Why Consider Business Credit Cards

Business credit cards come with unique benefits that make them a no-brainer for rewards travelers:

• High Welcome Offers: Business cards often feature generous sign-up bonuses that help you rack up points faster.
• No Impact on the 5/24 Rule: Most business credit cards (except some from Discover and Capital One) don’t count toward Chase’s 5/24 rule. This means you can maximize your personal cards while still opening business cards.

Who qualifies for a business credit card?

Here’s the secret: if you earn money outside a regular W-2 job, you’re likely eligible for a business card. Whether it’s a side hustle, freelance work, or selling items online, you could qualify as a sole proprietor.

Examples of Qualifying Activities:

• Selling on platforms like eBay, Etsy, or Facebook Marketplace – typically the easiest for anyone who has kids. You can sell some of their gently used clothes or toys online, and now you have a business. A friend of mine’s husband sells baseball cards online to qualify.
• Babysitting or daycare
• Tutoring or teaching
• Renting out property (like Airbnb-ing your own home or a second home)
• Driving for rideshare apps like Lyft and Uber or food delivery apps like Door Dash
• Freelancing (writing, graphic design, etc.)

How to Apply for a Business Credit Card

Applying is simpler than you might think. Here’s how to navigate the key application sections if you’re applying as a sole proprietor (meaning you do not have an EIN aka employer identification number):

• Legal Name of Business: Use your full name.
• Business Name on Card: Same as above.
• Business Address: Your personal address.
• Business Structure: Select “Sole Proprietor.”
• Tax ID: Use your Social Security number (SSN).
• Annual Business Revenue: Estimate what you’ll earn this year, even if it’s a side hustle.
• Years in Business: Include all the time you’ve been doing this activity, even if you weren’t earning much at first.
• Employees: Enter “0” or “1,” depending on the application requirements.

Pro Tip:

To increase your approval odds, space out applications by at least 90 days and ensure you’re not opening too many cards too quickly. If you do happen to have an EIN, use that to apply instead of your SSN.

Can you use business cards for personal spending?

While business cards are intended for business expenses, banks can’t easily distinguish between personal and business spending. That said, keeping a clear record of expenses is crucial, especially for tax purposes. For tax time, you can easily categorize which of your purchases are business versus personal with apps like Rocket Money. But it’s important to note that the items you actually buy with your business card will not impact your ability to earn the sign up bonus, as long as you spend the required amount within the required time frame when you applied.

Can you open multiple business cards?

Yes! You can:

1. Open multiple cards for a single business.
2. Apply for new cards if you run different businesses, even as a sole proprietor.

For example, if you blog and sell items online, you could apply for the same card under each business, potentially earning twice the points!

How to Maximize Points

If you hold a Chase business card, you’ll need to combine your points onto a premium card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® or Ink Business Preferred® to transfer them to travel partners. Here’s how:

1. Log into your Chase account.
2. Navigate to “Ultimate Rewards.”
3. Select “Combine Points” and choose the cards you want to transfer between.
4. Points transfer instantly!

You can also combine points with one other household member after linking accounts by calling Chase directly.

How to Combine Points

Step 1

Combine points from different cards by logging into your Chase account and click Ultimate Rewards® under Rewards on the right side. Once in the Ultimate Rewards® section, select “Rewards details”, then “Combine points” on the navigation.

Step 2

Then, select the card from which you want to move points, and the card to which you want to move points. The number of points and names of the cards have been erased in the below examples, but yours will show your card names over the images, with the last four digits displayed, in addition to how many points you have to move. Keep in mind that you want to move your points to a card that earns Ultimate Rewards® points from a cashback card in order to redeem them for travel.

Manually type in how many points you want to move from one card to another.

Step 4

Confirm that everything looks good before hitting submit. Your points should combine instantly.
